Nothing about this place tells me to go away and never come back, but nothing makes me want to return. We went for lunch the other day and everything just... was. The server took forever to come take our order. The food that finally came was wrong, and everything was just average. The Mozzarella triangles are a terribly low grade cheese and are equally matched with low grade marinara. Chicken tenders and fries aren't much for me to judge on, but there are lots of other restaurants with similar menus and better service. Really disappointed. Its in our neighborhood and since we always eat at the Tavern we wanted to try something new. Hubby got the shrimp poboy. It was okay. Not great. Same with my cubano. Fine, a little lacking in flavor. The french fries were definitely frozen out of a bag and they didn't bother to add some sea salt, pepper or any other flavoring so they were boring as...fill in the blank. I asked for ranch dressing to dip my flavorless fries in and they brought me a dish that seemed like half water, half ranch dressing. It was completely disgusting. I confirmed that I was not being charged extra for it and let them know that it was yuck. Been going here about every two to four weeks since its opening. The menu has undergone several revisions in this time, however, there is always a great selection. The prices are on par with the area. I really dig the decor: hand crafted booths and mafia table (a must see for fun factor!), lighting and wow did they get into the spirit with Christmas decorations! The waitresses I've had to date have all been helpful and courteous. I can honestly say that I've had an enjoyable time whenever I am there. Some favorites are: Oysters Michael, Pasta Rockafella, French Onion soup, She Crab soup, Crab Benedicts and the NEW meatloaf. It was just revamped w/ a new to-die-for recipe and a VERY generous slice! So delicious :) The soup and salad combo price is a bit high in my opinion, but to be fair the salads are usually a generous portion and the soups burst with flavor so I guess it balances out. Thought we saw some good reviews of this place so checked it out for breakfast a few weekends ago. Our breakfast got started off on the wrong foot when we were served lukewarm coffee (when we were one of two tables in the place and it was 10 minutes after they opened.) they politely swapped ours out for fresh cups, but it literally left a bad taste! As a connoisseur of the scrambled eggs/ home fries/toast/bacon breakfast, I was super disappointed. Eggs were not good, bacon tasted like it had been sitting for a while, but home fries were tasty! Went here for burger week and was excited about their pimento cheese burger. The patty was dry and flavorless. There was supposed to be a signature sauce that was non-existent. The bread was soft but had no butter and was barely toasted. I had heard good things and was excited to try this place, but was disappointed. Its hard to mess up coffee unless you are so cheap so cheap but you don't even use the correct amount and make really weak coffee with these folks are managed to do it which is a very tough feat. The servers are more interested in texting or whatever the heck they do you cant get anyone's attention boring the food is just not good this place doesn't really have any reason to exist. It's supposed to be a neighborhood place but it's definitely worth leaving the neighborhood and going someplace else if this is your only option in the neighborhood even if you're traveling on foot. The Grill is a neighborhood bar that is convenient for drinks if you live in the area. The service is friendly and usually swift, and both the restaurant and the bar areas have a local, family-friendly feel. Given its convenience, it is tempting to also get food there, but beware - even the "bar food" may be disappointing. I've been here multiple times over the years, for lunch and dinner, and the only menu items that I have been satisfied with are the burgers and the steamed shrimp (happy hour special). Most recently, I have tried the pot pie, the Cuban sandwich, and their chicken fingers (I'm really trying to give this place a chance to succeed, given the convenience factor for me). They were all subpar (and not priced accordingly). If you are looking for good food in the $10 range, I would opt for the Continental. If you want some cheap food, and don't care too much about quality, I would go over to Phil's. If you just want to grab some drinks with some other locals, and maybe grab a hamburger, go ahead and give The Grill a try. read more

A couple of nights ago was the first time I returned to The Grill since they opened. I was so excited to have another neighborhood restaurant, but When they opened I was so unimpressed with the food it took me over a year to return. Going back was a decision I made after seeing how much traffic is there at night. Well, the food was a bit better. I was only there for drinks and apps. We had loaded French fries and cheese sticks. They were just fine. Not great but good like most fried fat laden apps can be. Their drinks are strong, and I think that has something to do with the increased night traffic. LOL. I've heard their breakfast is much better than lunch and dinner, and after the not abysmally expected apps I'm willing to try it out. read more

We had a Groupon and decided to give it a try. We ordered the Bruschetta for an appetizer. It was amazing, we just needed to add a little salt to make it perfect. For our entrees my wife ordered the 14oz strip steak with mashed potatoes and the Thai Salad. Steak was cooked perfect, mashed onion potatoes were fantastic, and the Thai salad was tasty and refreshing. I ordered the Crab cakes and also got the mashed onion potatoes and thai salad. Excellent crab cakes with very little filler and the aioli sauce that accompanied it was great. The Thai salad was a perfect side for this dish. For dessert we had the Blueberry bread pudding (to go)... it was good, but not great. It may have been better if we had eaten it at the dinner.... Service was great. Very prompt and checked on us several times to see if we needed anything. We will definitely return! read more

The grill is exactly what a locally owned neighborhood restaurant should be- character, extensive menu, daily specials, great staff and good food. The staff is outstanding and are willing to accommodate special requests - you don't want toast for breakfast- that's ok, you can replace with a short stack of outstanding pancakes without an upcharge. Good mix of ages and people - young to old, families, singles, couples, friends hanging out. Everyone is welcome. My only complaint, and it's minor, is that the booths are so large that sometimes you have to sit on the edge of the seat so you can reach the table. The seats move so if the people behind you move the bench, you could be 2 feet from your table. Now if you're more full-figured, this could be a blessing. If you are small framed like me, opt for the table and chairs. read more

I ordered a glass of wine, which the menu states is "on tap". A glass of wine is $7.00 - the glass contained no more than 3 ounces of wine and I questioned the waitress. She was clueless. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs. My friend ordered the meat loaf. I took a bite of my meal and bit into a piece of plastic. Needless to say, I ate no more of my meal. My friend's meatloaf was good as was the asparagus that was a side. Mashed potatoes were very ordinary. I do not know how this place stays in business read more

I went to The Grill before my brothers college basketball game against University of Richmond. We ate dinner before heading over to the arena. We were seated immediately by a hostess. I ordered teriyaki wings and a classics burger with toppings (lettuce, tomato,onions,ketchup, & mustard). The wings were saucy and tasty. Burgers come with a side of fries but customers can substitute. My burger was average but good. Our server was very attentive. There is seating inside and outside (patio area). Went to "the grill" Tuesday the 1st. Absolutely positively loved the server we got. She was brilliant, vibrant, spunky, stylish and fun. She got our order completely correct. Better than my family and I could have imagined despite the picky eaters and all the allergies. We were so blessed to get such a hardworking, kind woman to serve us. 2018 was not a great year, especially when my whore of a husband left me for my sister. And on top of that I now have 4 kids to take care of alone between the ages of 3-11 with a full time job. But all I am saying was that the start of the new year was awesome! Another spot I hit at least a couple times a year and RVA burger week each July, they definitely know how to make a stellar burger. I came early in the morning recently on a Wednesday early for lunch. The burger was well cooked at a half pound and had a myriad of toppings including barbecue, cole slaw, onion straws, BBQ sauce, cheddar, and pickles on a brioche bun. Keep in mind this was $5! It is definitely one of the best I've had on the menu and last year's was excellent as well. The only knock against them, the waitress didn't bring me napkins or utensils and there was no one in the area, but she did come and check on me afterwards a couple of times realizing the error. It is a fun restaurant also to come to at night, where a steady flow of people in their 20's and 30's are coming in to spend time with their friends. Dear The Grill, I just want to start off by saying how excellent all of your "bar type food" is. I've had samples of ( the best) onion rings, jalapeño hush puppies, zucchini fries and the chicken waffle sandwich. All were delicious. I've never ordered anything, but from my co-workwer's experiences, I can also tell you the delivery service has always been on par as well. I decided to order lunch today. House salad and a cup of Turkey chili. Little expensive at $6 for the salad. So when the salad arrived I was expecting salad greens, spinach, romaine, anything but iceberg.
