Stopped by The Grind House on my way through from Bar Harbor to Boston Logan International. I was excited to see an impossible breakfast sandwich on the menu as well as a peanut butter mocha. Seriously, two of my favorite things to see on a coffee house menu. That said the execution was a bit off for me. The Impossible breakfast sandwich was served on an insubstantial bun (the type that is more air than anything) and was overall pretty basic. Their signature sauce mentioned in several dishes, seems to be thousand island or maybe tartar sauce? Either way, it wasn't my favorite. The peanut butter mocha was also a bit of a miss for me. I wasn't a fan of either their chocolate or their espresso (or the peanut butter flavor they used, for that matter). The shop itself is quirky and comfortable. We were able to get a spot by the windows, which was nice and the service was lovely. It would definitely be a good and comfortable spot for working and it could be that had I ordered differently, it may have been more my cup of tea (or coffee, as they case may be). But for what I ordered, it was a bit of a swing and a miss. read more

Walked in and wow, lots to read on the menu! Which can be good and bad depending on how much time you want to spend reading menus. I chose a egg and cheese on a croissant bun and a caramel turtle latte. I came here because it had been highly recommended, but I have to say, I expected more, but depends on what you like, right?? Plenty of seating, centrally located in the city, easy parking, and plenty of coffee concoctions to try out. My coffee was missing the whipped cream, but oh well. The froth for the latte was odd, it deflated super quickly, not sure what happened there. And the sweetness was sweet, but it was missing that caramel turtle flavor I thought I was going to get. For me, this was meh. I expected something more decadent. My egg sandwich was good. Basic. Not a real croissant either. It was a croissant bun of some sort. It seemed, well, basic, or economical. But it was filling and the egg was good. I also have to say that when I departed, I smelled like a convenience store that sells those hotdogs on rollers... I smelled all day, I had to wash my hair to get the smell out. I also have to mention the heavy music that was playing. It was obscene and it was loud. So loud it made it challenging to order and I did eat my meal quickly and leave. It was a Tuesday morning around 9 am. I have fallen in love with their green eggs and ham sandwich... without the ham. It's an incredible sandwich! Alas, they stop serving after breakfast hours so you must go early to get one. Believe me, I showed up late one day not knowing this and wanted to try and bribe the kitchen to make me one even though I was too late. Or cry to have them make me one. Bribe would be better. The vibe is industrial, not cozy so kinda meh for atmosphere. I am yet to find a good chocolatey mocha, this one was mostly milky. A dash of color inside in the form of very nice murals on the wall. Food was served excellent however, the philly cheese steak has some good spice to it. read more

I popped in here for lunch today and I'm glad I did! I like local sandwich shops as they usually have some creative items in the menu and tend to fit the local 'vibe'. I totally felt welcome here by the way I was treated at the counter. It's a rare gem to be made to feel special, even if just ordering a sandwich and chips for lunch. My sandwich was great and I really enjoyed my iced peanut butter espresso drink. They were both very delicious and on point and could rave about both of them. What really hit me here though was just really how I was treated as a customer. Maybe it's just spring time and the sun came out for the first time in a few days but man, I just felt really good coming in here and enjoying lunch. We stopped by this place for lunch as it was really close to the Bangor Airport and we had just flown in. Unlike other reviews, I didn't have any problems with the service! Yes, our food did take 30 minutes (we were dining in) but the staff gave us a heads up about that before we placed our orders and we were fine with the wait (we were a big group). What I wasn't a huge fan of was the Pesto Chicken Wrap on Spinach -- I don't know if it was because they were out of certain ingredients, but I didn't taste any pesto, and it was supposed to come with prosciutto but tbh didn't taste or look like prosciutto. It was some other kind of mystery meat. The chicken was also tasteless and didn't seem fresh. Others did like their orders though, especially the Piggie Smalls. I also don't know if the menu was out of date or what, but we didn't get any salads with our sandwiches. There's a good amount of seating available both indoors and outdoors, and I like that they support local artists because you can purchase the paintings hung up around the restaurant. There's also a couple of single bathrooms available (although one was out of service when we went). I would recommend, but maybe just not the Chicken Pesto Wrap! *** PS a note to management--please include an option to recycle your clear plastic cups! This must be what eating out was like in the USSR. The menu board clearly states "Breakfast only until noon." OK, it is 12:05, and the breakfast menu is still up. Get to the front of the line and ask about lunch. Breakfast only we are told, menu description be dawned. OK, then pancakes for our preschool companions. "We're out of pancakes," we're told. And then we are offered a choice of the TWO menu items left in the pantry. Adios. Hint for better living: when you are that bad at what you do, consider a career change. read more

Coffee was ok ( would have been better if there was less milk in the cappuccino and more foam, but that's my preference), service was a bit slow, my biggest issue is that the grill was on (on high I guess) and the place smelled like hot oil/old burned oil and so did my clothes and hair when I left. It was the perfect amount of greasy. What's more, one of the cooks was super helpful and friendly. I actually brought the sandwich back over to him, thinking it wasn't vegan (it just looked too good--too nuanced, you know?), and he cheerfully assured me it was vegan, listing out that was in it and in such a way that made me feel he was excited by just how convincing it was. Came after a night shift for a breakfast sando! It's the best, getting a good sleep after a full belly. Super cute space with lots of seating. They do require masks when not eating and provide hand sanitizer and masks at the door for anyone who needs them. All the tables are labeled to have been sanitized. I got the OMG sando and although it seemed small, it definitely packs a calorie punch and left me full for a while. Packed with a sausage patty, ham, pepper bacon, egg and cheese, the donut was the perfect amount of sweetness for the salty in the middle. I swear I gobbled it down in like 5 seconds. Super nice employees and takes Apple Pay, I'll definitely have to go back and try everything on the menu during my stay here. read more

Food and service were great at this place. All five of us enjoyed our meals, and the staff was super friendly.

Good food and atmosphere. Nice location. Unfortunately, we asked to stay in and everything was packaged in plastic and disposable cups. There are vegan and vegetariam options. I had the Go Fit and he had a breakfast burrito. Food is good. The hot drinks are good. Bring your own mug to save on making more trash. The service is friendly. May come back for a hot drink, but not food because of all the trash produced. read more

Dropped here to grab some breakfast before heading to Acadia and it was such a great decision. The coffee was well made and piping hot. The two sandwiches we got were really delicious. We each gave the other our halves. They were full of flavorful meat but not an overwhelming amount and the OMG on the doughnut was the best contrast with all of the salty rich items. It kept me full for a day or hiking and then in time for an early dinner. I wasn't even super sleepy after I ate it which is crazy considering I'm pregnant and always get sleepy after I eat. It is hard to resist the House of Grind and once I heard I had to come quickly. In the morning they offer coffee, eggs and pastries. It has a quasi diner feel. The grind pastries had their own profiles and the maple glazed bun connected with me. It was oh oh oh so good and I swallowed the whole pastry without even remembering whether it was the maple or the pumpkin. You might feel guilty afterward, but it sure went down well with Grind coffee. I am sure I will be back to Grind looking for a new type of pastry soon. read more

I've avoided reviewing The Grind House for a year and a half, in part because I wanted to keep visiting and give it a fair review, and in part because I like to write hilarious, off the wall reviews and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING STICKS OUT ABOUT THIS PLACE. So that's my review. This place is fine. The coffee is decent. The food is good enough. The decor is functional. The bathroom is a bathroom. The staff are nice (there is one lady who is so loud I can hear her a block away, but hey, who am I to judge someone else's lung capacity?). The location is decent. If you're looking for somewhere to eat a thing, drink a thing. This is a place that does those things. The service was there. The workers were there to work. I had a ice coffee with a caramel shot and it was pretty good. Had a poppy seed muffin that was pretty good and a cold bacon egg and cheese that wasn't anything special. Crohn's bathroom review: My biggest thing with a bathroom with cleanliness, this bathroom has that. It smells good because they have the scent dispenser on one of the walls. Toilet paper is your average thin public bathroom paper. There are two different soap options that you have. 7/10 read more

Every time I've gone in, I'm greeted with a smile and welcoming staff. Everything is clean- tables, etc. I go almost every Wednesday for breakfast and I get a SMH with a Funky Monkey ice coffee. We stopped in for Sunday Brunch and sat outside as we had a dog with us. Two of us in our group wanted to order breakfast burritos but they must have been out of something and couldn't make them. We settled for tacos and a breakfast bowl which were both good but nothing special. The others in the group enjoyed their choices from the menu. The coffee flight was an interesting feature; good and flavorful, although a little sweet for our tastes. The service was decent given the number of customers but seemed a bit slow none the less. This was one hell of an experience. Today, the manager (owner?) Sherena came out when we were eating lunch and wanted to 'talk with us' about our (already-superseded) review from 3 months go, where we mentioned one of the employees being flustered by my being trans. It was a very strange conversation in that it felt like she wasn't apologizing or asking us how we felt, but rather telling us how we should feel. In a twist I'm used to now, she told us why her employee couldn't have been transphobic toward us: "Actually, her mother is married to a *female*". Another well-worn trope at this point: "Maybe she was having an off day". I've heard that one before! It took us some time to digest this conversation- at first we thought 'that was a little odd' but the more time went by the worse it felt. The "married to a female" bit in particular struck me as strange: You're such a great queer ally but you can't bring yourself to say "lesbian"? Why is it impossible the child of a lesbian could be transphobic? Transphobic lesbians aren't exactly unknown. Why would the mother make any difference in how we were being treated? As we said to Sherena, "We know how to read people". Something didn't feel right so I did a few minutes' worth of social media investigation. The employee's mom is straight and married to a man. This came as a blow. I used to feel safe here- I thought the manager was a little intense, but the food was good and at least I wasn't being misgendered (I wonder how much of the intensity came from her having read my earlier review). But now that I know the manager lied about her employee's mom, what else has she said that's not true? What does she say about us when we leave? What did she exclaim when she read my review the first time? You want us to feel safe at Grind House? Do you want us to feel safe because you care about trans people, or do you want us to feel (falsely) safe so we'll keep spending money and tell other trans people it's a safe place? Why would you make up something that's so easy to fact check in this day and age? Even if what she said were true, it would have been a bad, insulting excuse. The fact the manager here would use an employee's imaginary lesbian mom as an excuse for her employee being transphobic- something we'd obviously gotten over given how we'd come back many times, and updated our review accordingly- is just flabbergasting. She would have been smart to just leave things alone. We were feeling safe until this. There might be a Pride flag in the window, but there is no way I could recommend Grind House to LGBT people. read more

A clean, well-designed and comfortable interior environment, with plenty of natural light, a variety of seating options, and immaculate bathroom. A variety of creative, thoughtful sandwiches and treats including some great options for vegetarians and a vegan sausage/cheese/egg sandwich that is tasty and filling. All those make this place a great spot for a weekday working session, a weekend lunch, or an alternative to some of Bangor's more established favorite haunts. Yes, this location has had some turnover though this place is hitting all the right marks, so give them a chance to hang around and become a new classic Bangor spot by giving them a chance. read more

Stopped into The Grind House on our way to our vacation spot. I ordered the chicken pesto wrap and my daughter ordered the MD veggie sandwich. Both were excellent. My 12?y at old daughter noted how fresh the bread and veggies were. I was very happy with the fresh veggies and chicken in my wrap. Fun drink options I hadn't seen before. Loves the birch beer! Only thing I didn't realize was that the sides were not included with the sandwich option. I was asked by the staff which one we were interested in, and Ruth is I should have asked, and didn't.
