I have been looking for a new hair stylist in Chicago and I stumbled upon The Hair Loft on Yelp. I saw that there were so many good reviews for Alison so I thought I would have a great experience. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I told her that I wanted to try some light curtain bangs but was worried because my hair is really thick and I had never had bangs before. Not only did she cut short, thick, blocky bangs that didn't look like the picture I showed at all. I told her that I didn't like them and it would be nice if she could blend them in with the rest of my hair. She told me that it wasn't possible and that curtain bangs are meant to be blocky and short (I don't think she knows what the trending hairstyle looks like. She admitted she needed to ask more questions. ) Then she told me to schedule another appointment with her in a few months after my hair had grown out to come back and have her cut it again.... She tried but honestly it was the worst haircut of my life and I would not recommend her to anyone. read more

This place... is amazing. After getting a botched highlight job from a different salon on Friday evening, I called The Hair Loft frantically that same night (10 minutes before they closed) to see if they could get me in the next day. They booked me in right away. Upon arriving, everyone was so friendly. The gentleman at the desk quickly walked me around as it was my first time, and made sure I was comfortable. The space is lovely. I was with Maria, who is an absolute gem. She listened to me explain what had happened, walked me through multiple ways that we could correct it and explained what each option would mean, all the while calming me and telling me it was all fixable. I can't explain how appreciative I am for both her kindness and her knowledge. Once we landed on an option, she got to work. Still explaining everything she was doing, why she was doing it and how it would prevent any damage to my hair. Upon starting, she realized my cut was also messed up from the other salon, and quickly fixed that as well. I came in in a ball cap and shaken from a horrible experience, and left an hour later loving my hair again. Unfortunately very disappointed... social media isn't always what it seems! The blonde you see on instagram is not reality & I have learned this the hard way. I came in on 2/24/21 for a full highlight, hoping to achieve the (almost) platinum/vanilla blonde that shows in most of the photos. I left feeling like I had the same blonde color I had before as if I just got a touch up. I went to another salon 6 weeks later on 4/9/21 and was told by the other stylist that I in fact got a partial and not the full highlight that I paid for. The stylist said that this happens from time to time with clients that have a lot of hair. Salons are expensive & it's a shame to get ripped off. Definitely do your research! read more

Update: Lili is still fantastic and still keeping me out of (hair) trouble! I came in today thinking I was going to refresh my balayage / medium lob look OR go back to black... two different ideas! Lili, knowing how bored I get with my hair, immediately went the balayage route since going dark was gonna be rough on my hair when I would inevitably want to lighten in again. Also, I've been having this funky texture problem with my hair that I've messaged Lili about. Disclosure - I've done everything to combat it - clarifying shampoo, combing hair in the shower, foregoing leave in conditioner, etc. so we googled some articles and decided on a science experiment. Lili found some baking soda and dishwater detergent mix to wash my hair with.... and it worked. My hair was so soft and clean after the wash and tone. So not only fabulous cut and color but awesome science experiment, Thanks for always humoring me Lili!! read more

Review for men's haircut: I went here in December, mostly a great experience! Nicely designed high-end salon, and the stylist who cut my hair was so great to talk to. The lower rating is for the cut itself (Seems like men's haircuts are out of their expertise). I asked for a taper on the back and she said confidently she could do it. When I got home I realized she didn't taper it at all, and just shaped the back of my hair into a triangle - looked pretty weird (see image). Given previous yelp reviews I was surprised, and I don't think it was worth the high price of the cut. read more

She really listens to what I'm looking for and takes the time to educate me on how to keep my hair healthy and bright. I went to the hair loft today for my first time and it did not disappoint. The salon is in a great location with plenty of pay to park street parking. I was seen by Amorette for a cut and color. Not only was Amorette able to schedule me in right before the holidays, but she was very friendly and professional and recommended the best treatment for my current hair situation and lifestyle. Put off getting my hair cut for almost a year because I had just moved here and hate going through the process of finding a new hair stylist but wow... Alison is amazing! $80 is definitely the most I've ever paid for a haircut (but also cheaper than anything else I could find in the city), but it was worth it - I have the best haircut I've had in my life. She also asked me how I felt about my hair vs telling me about it, and gave me styling and product recommendations based on my answers instead of trying to correct me or change my mind. I went here after being referred by a couple of friends and reading reviews. Jerry was my stylist, and oh my gosh... BEST EXPERIENCE EVER. I showed him the style cut I wanted, which was a somewhat long pixie cut (mind you I came in with past shoulder length hair). He was thrilled to hear that I was not frightened for this big hair change, but I came in knowing that this was the cut I wanted! I am not fond of giving too many reviews especially during covid times, but this salon was pretty average. We usually go to salons for the fun experience, but if it's combined with hot iron touching you or the stylists nails digging into your scalp, then it's not fun. I literally took a picture of the hair style I wanted which was pretty simple layering and came out with frizzy hair and a basic trim instead of a style. A lot of hair strands were flying around as they were not curled and if you see the carelessness with which hair was rolled into the curling iron, you would not be happy. The stylist won't even comb it prior to curling it and it looked like a hot mess. Will not be going again as it felt like i went to salon in a small mall rather than river north. read more

I've got my haircut by Susie quite a few times. I have curly, thin hair and am allergic to certain ingredients with shampoos so can be a difficult customer! Susie has done amazing every time! She always cuts my bangs just the way I want vs in the past people have cut my bangs too short. She's super accommodating and lets me bring my own shampoo and conditioner as well. I have never heard of this place of quite come across it before! My assistant recommended it when I needed a last minute appointment for nails and a blowout. The place is so clean, the staff is super-friendly, Enza did a wonderful job with my nails even when I was unaccommodating and on a work call throughout, and Ashlee made me look so pretty with beautiful curls that lasted 3 days! They have a great referral program, very reasonable pricing, short-notice appointment available and a $65 2-blowout program. Highly recommend! read more

When it was finally time for me to get my first haircut in Chicago, I spent over 3 weeks trying to research and decide where I'd like to do it (like any sane person, obviously!!) I decided to go to The Hair Loft - having looked at their website 20 times, I knew stylists work in tiers there and the pricing varies accordingly. When I called to make an appointment, I was assigned a stylist (I didn't mention which tier I wanted) and I obviously panicked soon as I hung up - praying my stylist wasn't going to be one that'd completely ruin my hair. So I walk in the next day, there was a really sweet old person (I forget his name, but he was so nice) at the desk who greeted me, gave me a tour of the facility, explained the whole process to me and then left me hang my jacket in one of their closets and wear their robe over my clothes to avoid any hair from ending up on them. I then met my stylist, Susie, who was SUPER nice to me the entire time. I got an olaplex treatment done and then had her cut my hair - I decided I wanted to go way shorter w my hair and she made sure everything was so perfect!! I also told her I was trying the curly girl method with my hair and she made sure not to use any products that could ruin my progress with my hair - she was super considerate. It was a really, really good experience and we know to count our blessings when we find a place/person we can completely trust with our hair. I'm def going back! read more

I was a bit nervous after having a few bad or super expensive (or both!) experiences in salons around Chicago, but from my first step in, this place was great. The salon is modern, beautiful, clean and relaxing. The salon owner greets you at the desk, gives you a tour of the salon, offers you a selection of beverages and introduces you to your stylist. I worked with Hannah and she was AWESOME. I got about 5 inches cut off my hair and full head balayage to lighten my hair to a golden blonde and it turned out perfect. I had been box dying my hair for a few years and refusing to go to a salon because I didn't want to sit in a chair for hours. Why did this experience that was initially positive, definitely a 5-star, nose-dive into a negative, extremely awkward situation?!! My hair-color turned out to be fantastic but I didn't get a haircut afterwards because the person who answered the phone did not book the cut. My hair-colorist did not have the time to do the cut afterwards. There was a mistake but of course, at my expense. As I am typing this, the color job was awesome, plastered on current state of mangy hair with split ends. My beef: I understand mistakes happen. I totally get it. I have worked in a service capacity--things get chaotic, crazy and miscommunication can easily happen. The way how Hair Loft handled it is what I have a big problem with. The apology didn't appear genuine and there was no accountability whatsoever. What's even more disappointing is I have been here several times (all positive experience), I began to think it doesn't matter whether I am a repeat customer or not---maybe loyalty doesn't matter? To be clear, I didn't want a "make good of the situation" discount, free shampoo or a complimentary 2-minute head massage just to get me to be satisfied, shut up and go away. All I wanted was a genuine acknowledgment, a simple apology--something. Instead it appears that they were more relieved that I didn't get all wild-eyed, throw a massive ape-$hit epic tantrum, demanding and/or threatening that they "do something about this now!!!" What a waste of time and effort to growing out my hair that could have easily solicited 3 hairstyles. CUTTING TECHNIQUE -- minimal cuts while hair was wet. Plenty of cuts with dry hair while styling. Nestled across from the Michigan Av Loyola Campus is the Hair Loft, a prototypical urban salon/spa that occupies all three stories of a brownstone. The space is bright, homey and relaxed. My review of this place is limited as I only get my man-haircut here. However, the place is always bustling, but not crowded. Expectedly, the clientele skews toward the ladies with an assorted mix of Ally McBeals, trixies, milfs and coiffured socialites. My haircut runs about $40 with tax/tips; naturally, ladies expect to pay more. Obviously, $40 is a lot for a haircut. However I was tired of bouncing from place to place when I first moved to Chicago. My man Franc got it right the first time and he was just down the street from my old apt. For you politicos out there, I've seen IL Attorney General Lisa Madigan get her hair cut here....you can judge for yourself if that's a good thing or bad. read more

Gloria the masseuse is the reason for the review. I had pain in my shoulder and numbness down my arm. A doctor told me to go to a chiropractor, and the chiropractor told me that I should go to a massage therapist. She gave me Gloria's info. For a one hour massage, Gloria usually starts with reflexology on your feet. Then she does a full body massage, but she'll target what you need worked on. I'm sure she'd skip the reflexology if you hated it. She borders on magical medical. The first time I'd met her, we really hadn't said much beyond introductions, whether I had any likes or dislikes, and how she works--the usual stuff. After working my feet and legs, she got up to my shoulders and said, "Do you hate your job?" I did, in fact, hate my job, and I thought it was pretty freaky that she asked me the question. She said she could tell by the way I was holding my shoulders. The only things I don't like are that it can be kind of noisy because the manicure-pedicure area is right outside the door and that Gloria doesn't use a face doughnut (whatever that thing is called that you put your face in when you're laying on your stomach). I've never asked for the face doughnut though; maybe she's got one. You can buy packages of four massages to bring the price down a little too, but it's still priced comparably to other places: about $70/hour. I've also gotten manicures and pedicures, which were always good. The people who work there have always been very nice. read more
