Probably the WORST thing I have ever put in my mouth! Went to the Halal Guys in NYC and loved it there. When I found out they had a establishment here I was very excited. I come inside the building and I just want to head straight out because the smell was horrific. I go up to the counter and the two ladies behind the counter start to give me a disgusted look. The first lady asked what I wanted in a very mean manner. I let it slide and I placed my order of gyro and some pita and hummus on the side. She got the pita bread from under the year old looking chicken. The other lady is just staring at me which made me feel uncomfortable. Then another person comes in and the other lady starts helping them. In the meantime my food is done. I pay and I go home. I see the food and I just want to puke. The gyro looked stale. The rice was just as cold as ice and the pita was as small as a Dorito chip. I take a bite out of the gyro and I threw it away the second it went into my mouth. -DON'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE AT ALL!! read more

The food here is not as great as a lot of people say it is. I ordered the chicken over rice platter and the beef over rice, and I have to say I actually didn't like the food. It went cold fast and there wasn't enough flavors. Without the sauces it would just taste bland. read more

When Halal guys first opened up in Chicago, I was so ecstatic. I've been dying to try their food ever since I heard all my friends rave about the ones in New York. I fortunate enough to try it the first day it opened as well as many other times since then. What I really liked was that the quality of the food has stayed consistent. The vegetables are very fresh and everything in general has a very clean and not so overwhelming taste. The white sauce and red sauce, oh goodness...idk who created it but they must be an angel! Beware though, the red sauce will burn your mouth and you will feel a fire for days. I take spicy food extremely well and so I didn't listen when the employees tried to warn me so I put way too much my first visit. I cried tears of fire. No matter how well you take spicy food, you are no match for their red sauce, just take it easy. Trust me on that. For me, I prefer the mix of the beef gyro and chicken but I heard their Falafel is really good too. The service is usually friendly but not overly friendly. The manager there though is super nice and accommodating. I only wish there were places to sit and enjoy the food but this is more of a pick up your food and go kind of place. I heard the other location is more of a sit down so I'll have to check that one out. I also heard they sell fries too! I'm going to have to go back for that! read more

This place used to be good when they first opened up a couple years back. Now!?? It's HORRIBLE!! The layout of this place is confusing. There's a sign that says order here with someone waiting there & they tell you to order there by where they make the food. Really?? Why are you just sitting there? The people taking the order are either deaf or just plain stupid! How many times do I have to say just white sauce only. But still they ask "You want red sauce?" ... "you want hot sauce?" "For a dollar more you want extra pita" LISTEN use your ears!!.. WHITE SAUCE ONLY... The quality of the food SUCKS & the price is higher now. Cashier is also deaf & or stupid because they keep asking the same shit. Avoid this place! Management sucks & the employees suck. Wouldn't be surprise if they close this one down. never been to new York but ive heard a lot about the halal guys from my friends that have been and from food sites.. once I heard it was opening up here in Chicago I was pretty excited because i finally get to try it and see what is the hype about without going to new York!! anyways.. i ordered fries and a chicken and gyro platter with extra white sauce and hot sauce packets on the side.. note that additional sauce is 50 cent a packet.. to me it was just ok.. not something I will go out of my way for..the gyro and chicken meat was mehhh the rice was alright.. to me I think its the loads of white sauce that makes it good.. however I do enjoy their fries.. read more

The white sauce was regular mayo. The gyro was shredded grease. The only good thing was the pita. Would not go back if the food was free.

This place is NOTHING compared to the NYC Halal guys, It's over priced for Small Quantity and they are too slow to ring us at the register, also the system to have people lined up outside is annoying. I don't think so it will run for a long time, many changes need to be done and the prices need to be lower. Not planning on going back for sure. read more

I am an unequivocal halal guys enthusiast. I have been a huge fan ever since their days as strictly a cart named 'platters' in NYC. I was over the moon when I heard that they were going to begin franchising out and Chicago would be getting a storefront. If I would've known that this is how it would be I would've tempered my excitement a bit. I understand that when you have different owners, the experience won't be the same, but at least it should be similar. This location doesn't even sell the same food. It is egregious to me that they don't even serve lamb, only beef and chicken (as of 9/24/15). They don't let one put one's own white and red sauce on, and instead give the tiniest of portions on when asked for it. It is blasphemy that this place calls itself "Halal Guys". They are letting their NYC founders down. read more

Based solely on service: Got here at 1020p, was told the line closed at 10p so we wouldn't be guaranteed to get food. Why would they show it as open til 11p, wasted time and cab fare to go down there. Disappointing, line didn't seem long but they said it was taking up to an hour for the folks in front of us to get their food. I'm giving this restaurant 2/5. I've visited on the first day opening and two weeks later. I've gone their New York location a ton of times and know exactly what the deal is. Yes the line up is long but same in New York. I was utterly shock with the price difference and the amount of food - rip off!! In New York one platter was enough for two people. Here they give you more salad and the rice is gone in five bites. The sauce quality is the same. But the amount is definitely upsetting. The best part of New York is that you allow the long line up since the amount of food is worth the price and the wait. The restaurant itself is very nice never had the chance to eat inside. Sucks that there is no free parking available nearby. read more

My wife's a native NY-er now Chicagoan so when we heard they had opened a new Halal Guys she insisted we need to try it out to make sure it's just as good as their NY location. When we arrived there was a long line out the door - totally understandable as this is their first location outside of NY - and let me tell you it was worth the wait! The food is what you'd expect from a small hole in the wall place. We got two chicken and lamb combo dishes with everything and they were delicious. Rice was a little dry but I'm sure they'll get that figured out as time goes on. Definitely a great late night spot of you're out with friends bar hopping or looking for a quick bite. Hope they open some more locations out in the burbs. read more

I used to go to the NYC stand on 53rd and 6th all the time when I was in college and I loved it. This location is okay. The food doesn't seem to taste as good but that could just be psychological. Without a doubt the portions are significantly smaller. The last time I got the chicken platter here it was about 35-40% lettuce and tomatoes. In New York the lettuce and tomatoes would only take up about 10-15%, and they'd fill the chicken and rice to the brim. I'm debating whether or not to go back because although it does taste good and fulfills my desire for Halal Guys, I can't help but feel like I'm being ripped off. read more

Wow! So I was visiting Chicago and happened to walk past this place. There was a huge line out the door so I knew it must be something good. I took a gamble and stood in line and ordered a falafel sandwich with everything on it. This was the best falafel I've had in a long time! I love hot sauce and was little skeptical when the guy only put a few drops on. But man was it ever good and spicy just the way I like it. Gyros are also on the menu but I was disappointed that they had run out of meat when I got there. Oh well the falafel was on point! If I had to make one suggestion it would be to add an extra falafel ball on each order as a standard because two balls just doesn't do it. So I was driving by and couldn't believe that there was no line (it was aound 3:30pm on a Friday). I parked my car illegally and hopped out. I wanted my favorite Halal Guys plate as I was having it 4 times a week when I lived in NYC. Unfortunately, the Chicago location was such a disappointment for the reason that they have smaller portions, lower quality and higher prices than the New York location. I would've been just fine with the higher price (I understand the cost of a store front vs a cart) if the portions and quality stayed the same as the New York location. For $9 and some change (Large plate supposedly) I can get a much much much higher quality and bigger portions in many middle eastern restaurants in Chicago. Not coming back to this location for sure unless they do something about it. The three stars are for the awesome memories that I was left with from the NYC location (5 stars) mixed with my bad experience at the Chicago location (1 star). Otherwise the Chicago location barely deserves the 1 star. I'll keep my loyalty for the Halal Guy in New York whenever I'm there. Also, I have to mention that the staff at this location is VERY SLOW AND CONFUSED compared to the NYC guys. I lived in NYC for two years and the carts of 53rd and 6th have been a regular spot for me. I was so happy to know that The Halal Guys or "chicken&rice" opened in my neighborhood in Chicago.First off, great location next to division street bars. Food? Met my expectations and was delicious. I also LOVED the french fries...I never got them in NYC so it was awesome to eat them with my food here. Overall, obviously a different feel than the carts in NYC because this is a storefront. The biggest PRO was being able to use as much white sauce as I wanted. In NYC I wouldn't cut line outside and keep asking them for that white sauce where in the storefront you can really get how much you want. Because it is the first franchise opening in Chicago, waiting in line is expected... especially at places where the food is good. I'm sure the line won't be as bad after everyone gets to try it so if you don't like waiting, go later on!! read more

I'd been craving a gyro for a week and saw these guys on Uber Eats so I ordered one. It was VERY disappointing. It was more like a Philly Cheese Steak than a gyro. The gyro meet was chopped into small pieces and not very flavorful, in addition to the usual onions and tomatoes there were also green peppers. Green peppers on a gyro??? And all of the vegetables were diced into small pieces. I ordered extra Gyro sauce because that yummy cucumber sour cream is one of the best part of a gyro - not here - its a runny "white sauce" that's mass made and comes in single serve packet similar to salad dressing. It tasted more like ranch than gyro sauce. Bottom line - not really a Gyro and I'd recommend skipping this place. I wont order from them again. read more

Ordered food for delivery. Charged for food, but never delivered. Called them 1.5 hours later and they stated "Your driver never came". What in the world does that even mean. Im not sure where to start with this review. Words cannot describe the disappointment I had with this restaurant. Disappointed is putting it lightly. Let's start off with the most important stuff, the food. not enough gyro meat which was cold to begin with, not enough pita, overstuffed with lettuce and did I mention you can't pour your own sauce and have to pay for extra? seriously, 5 faces 50 yards away is just as good as this place. Take away the name "halal guys" and this restaurant is really nothing special. the staff is clearly overwhelmed or lacking experience in customer service, and their food handling is definitely something to take note of. I myself have seen the halal guy employees in the back alley keep the doors open just as in the video listed. the alley is disgusting and they leave it open that leads to the kitchen. Not only this but they also house and prepare food in the residential building above it and bring it down stairs THROUGH the alley which is a CLEAR violation of public health code. I've been told by residents in the building that they've already alerted the Chicago Dept of Health about Halal guys food handling practices. This place is a joke. Sad to see such a great place ruin their name because of expansion. the Halal Cart in NYC was and is still great, their expansion into other cities has definitely diluted their brand. Only time will tell if they survive in Chicago, from the looks of previous reviews, it looks like a good amount of customers share the same point of view. Like everybody else who's reviewed the Chicago location, I lived on this food when I was training for a couple of months in Midtown. I can be a cheapass, so the $6 or so was possibly the best bang-for-your-buck. Fast forward, I was SO SO excited when I heard that The Halal Guys were franchising out and Chicago was a target market. So, I've eaten here about four or five times total. Although, it's not the same as the product put out by the NYC food cart, it's relatively close. First off, prices are higher, which can be attributed to the higher rent of a brick and mortar location, as well as wages. Second, there is definitely less meat in the plates, and it just doesn't taste quite the same. I cannot complain, though, because it's still pretty good and better than the majority of cheap Mediterranean places here in town. Service has become more efficient as the place continues to go through their ramping-up period. Everybody's very friendly, and I have been satisfied with my meals thus far. If you do ask for sauce on the plate, just know that they drown it with the white sauce. I always forget, and my meat is swimming in it........doesn't stop me from eating it though. read more

After all the hype, I was excited to get some tasty chicken and rice with extra white sauce. The food, was not bad; felt like there was not much meat. However, the experience/service was terrible. I am not expecting 5 star service from what is normally a food cart in New York, but it was just utterly disappointing. None of the staff communicate with each other, so even if you tell the cashier that you want extra something or other, the people making the food end up barking at you to repeat your order. They also bickered with each other, as some of them slacked off getting food prepped promptly, and there was no organization or assembly line prep so getting out food is slow, not to mention caused the line to grow even longer. They also can't differentiate between the host's name and your name on the receipt, so they may end up giving someone else your food. If they were nicer about the whole ordeal, I'd look over it, but that was not the case. Will come back when service is better or if someone is willing to pick up food for me. read more

Got the falafel plate delivered. This was the worst delivery food I've ever gotten. No flavor, falafel is rock hard, the white sauce is disgusting. The rice is somehow oily and there is a few pieces of old lettuce on the plate. My bf got the combo plate and we wouldn't even feed this to our dog. I came during the first 100 tonight, waited about 1.5 hours and was #49 in line. Once entering, thing went fairly quick, even the owner helped wrap my order.
