Every halal guys I've been to thus far has had some sort of issue (other than the OG one in NYC). The first thing I've noticed about THG as a whole though is that their customer service is severely lacking. They're either impatient, mean, condescending, or just downright stupid. Can you really not be bothered to do your jobs and, I dunno, serve the customer the food the want instead of putting up an argument? Seriously, how do they manage to find the only employees that happen to be the biggest buttholes? The second thing--and I'm sure the franchises don't have much say in this--is that they nickel and dime you for everything! Especially as of late. Want one extra white sauce packet? $0.50 ($2 if you ask for it through a delivery app!). A few extra slices of bread? $1.00. Don't want veggies? $1.00 if you want extra roti (rice) to fill up the space. It was $7 at one point for a regular platter and now it's somewhere around $8.50. Significant price hike in just a year! And the third thing--the food quality is so inconsistent. This branch is no exception. Either the chicken is cut too big (and therefore undercooked or too rubbery), or it's been over cooked and burnt. The veggie cuts are inconsistent. I looooooooooove the OG THG in NYC so much- I've walked sooo many blocks late at night to get to them when I've been in town. So when I heard they had shops open in Virginia, I was so excited! I was in town for work and a friend and I made sure to go! The food was soooooo good!!! The store is pretty small, but we were able to grab a table to eat. I love the huge portions (I was SO FULL!). The only issue was that the food wasn't the warmest. I was super happy anyway, and one of the employees came around while we all were eating to add as much white sauce as we wanted on our meals. There was so much hype around THG opening almost everywhere in the DMV that I finally decided to stop in to see for myself. The store is very narrow and there's not many tables if you choose to dine in. The menu is pretty straight-forward but it seems the fan favorite is the bowl. When I tried mine, it was so dry that I finally realized why they sold extra white sauce packets for $0.50. It does taste better with more sauce but I still was very underwhelmed by it. Maybe I expected a lot more since it was the most talked about place for so long? I got the chicken platter with white sauce which tasted okay at the beginning. That being said, I'm 90% sure this place is the reason I had an upset stomach for the rest of the day. I should've thought about it when he handed it to me, but the white sauce packet I got from one of the employees making my dish was definitely not chilled/refrigerated. That's the only thing from the whole day that could have possibly been the cause (unless it was the platter itself). Finally got the opportunity to try this place out. After coming back from a trip to New York, we were craving chicken and rice with the white sauce, so Hubs and I had to make a stop. We ordered the chicken and rice platter with the lettuce, rice, and a hefty portion of chicken. They give you a variety of toppings to add with some items that cost extra. The girl gave us a drizzle of the white sauce and when asking for more, it would cost extra, which i was not a fan of. We got a couple "lines" of the red sauce and luckily didnt ask for more because that thing is MUY CALIENTE!!!! So beware:: red sauce is extrrrra hot (and i love spicy food). Today was my first time ever in the place. I really can't speak much to the food (we got sides that were good) but I thought the place was filthy. The windows need to be washed as they are covered in grease and finger prints. The bathroom was messy and the floor and counters also needed attention. It's notable that no one was in the place, so it's not like they had a crowd and got overwhelmed. Even the counter staff had filthy aprons and shirts. On a positive note - the man who helped me was super attentive and nice and the hummus and pita was good. I would be scared to eat here, though. Because of the amazing service, this place gets a 5. There are few times where I believe that service can push a normal rating of 4 to a 5. It was amazing here! Both times that I have come in it's been super late and they were about to close. I got the combo platter the first time, and the second time I got the chicken. It was really good! I've never eaten at any of the NYC locations--that might affect my opinion about the quality of food here. It's not bad! On the other hand, it's not very flavorful. Their special house white sauce is good, but it's HEAVY. Ask for a light amount of sauce and they will still give you a generous amount unless you are very assertive about the quantity that you want. THE CONS: It might be possible that I just happened to come during a bad week? I came two consecutive days in a row to this one location and the customer service was terrible each time. On the second day that I came in, it was not crowded at all. The lady that was handling my food barely looked at me. When I asked her a question about whether or not there was dairy in the white sauce, she gave me the biggest attitude before she finally said no that there wasn't. I asked whether or not all the toppings came with it, or if any were extra. She told me that it wasn't extra, so I picked and chose what I wanted. At the end of it all, when I was about to get ready to pay, I noticed that the bill was more than it was the day before. When I asked, "Shouldn't it be $9.00?" It took her a couple seconds before she told me that olives were an extra 50 cents. ... I was just very eager to get out of that facility at that point. I complained about the extra charge because I sincerely would not have gotten olives with my platter if I had known beforehand that it was an extra charge. This is the best D.C. area Halal guys yet with huge portions, plenty of seating options and extra offerings that other locations don't offer - like FRIES! Also, they have peppers and onion as additional toppings you can get for no extra charge. I love halal guys but this location's quality have gone down. When I got home, I noticed he gave me 7 pieces of bread with my platter. I love their bread so I was more than happy to have extra in my bowl but all of them were stale and had weird smell to them. The meat was extra dry and the sauce didn't taste the same to me. Maybe it's because I stopped by at 10:30pm on a Friday night so maybe the food were sitting for too long. I don't know what the reasons are but meat was dry and the bread was stale. I don't understand the hype. Maybe I need to try the OG location in NY. Came here on a Thursday night around 7:30pm and it was packed. The line was out the door but it went pretty quickly. I really appreciate the guys who work here. They all had smiles on their faces and made sure to greet everyone! Hence the 3 stars (or else it would be less). I ordered the combo platter with both chicken and beef. I added green peppers, onions, and white sauce. The food was just okay. It wasn't anything to write home about and I couldn't tell if it was the rice or the meat, but something on my platter had an odd taste to it. Side note for first timers - Red sauce is REALLY FREAKING HOT!! The seating here is also pretty limited. They have a couple of 4 people tables up front but the majority of the tables towards the back are for 2 people. I mean not a lot of restaurants close around 12am-1am, and with my occasional midnight cravings, I am sure to take my money to this late night fix often. I eat Halal food anywhere from three to 10 times a month in NYC. I hate to rate any restaurant this low, but my experience here was horrible. I entered, planning to purchase a regular combo, extra protein, and no rice or bread. The guy who waited on me, didn't provide extra protein despite my clear request - so, I asked again, and was told he could only provide chicken because the lamb was running low. Okay, it's not the end of the world, but everything really went downhill 15 minutes later when I began to eat the platter. First, the lettuce and tomato was practically ice cold. I requested onions and they were diced small, as if a condiment for for a hot dog. For this type of meal, onions are supposed to be cut large - typically cooked into the protein upon request. This would appear to be a small detail, but it actually makes a huge difference with the taste. As for the actual food - the chicken was cold; not room temperature, but actually cold. Perhaps it had to do with the bed of cold lettuce, but chicken should be piping hot when placed on the platter. In addition, the chicken was dry, seasoned poorly, and the pieces were inconsistent in size. As for the small amount of lamb - which the server called "gyro" (a gyro is a pita with meat inside) - it wasn't bad tasting, but it was also cold. In fact, my platter was so cold that the grease from the gyro congealed at the bottom of the tray. It was disgusting when I reached that part of the tray only to come up with congealed grease on cold lettuce. I understand that Halal Guys restaurants are not set-up like your average Halal truck, whereby the later actually chops up the protein for each order. But at the very least, provide hot chicken and lamb and room temperature lettuce and tomatoes. And, it's always a good thing to remain well stocked so that you don't short-change a customer. There were only two guys present during my visit and they didn't appear to be hitting on all cylinders. Everything I'm complaining about can be easily corrected. If this place is managed better, the food will improve remarkably. Finally, I should mention this was my second visit to this location with the same exact results, with exception for my first visit when they actually provided double portions of protein. I thought the cold lettuce and tomatoes during my first visit might have been a "bad day" because they were training someone. That didn't prove to be the case. GUYS: Stop serving cold food. Season the chicken thoroughly, and serve it moist. I won't comment on the small onions, and I also noticed that you serve similarly diced green pepper, because I'm not from the area and maybe this is a local preference. read more

My husband and I have been a huge fan of The Halal Guys for a while now. I love the way they cook their meat as I am extremely picky about seasoning. I had the Beef Gyro with the white sauce and the extra hot sauce with a side of fries, while my husband had a Small Combo 3 Platter. Both were extremely delicious and were enough for our lunch today. I frequent this Halal Guys, especially since it is conveniently right across from GMU. The food is normally good! I went for a late dinner on 7/17, and ordered a combo platter. While the gyro was delicious as usual, the only pieces (scraps) of chicken I received were either burnt or over-crispy. Additionally, an employee that appeared to be a manager was overwhelmingly rushing and pushy (with both customers and other employees). He was speaking very fast, aggressively, and seemed very stressed out. I would've been more empathetic, but the restaurant was not busy and there wasn't anyone in line behind me. I've never been to the original in NYC, so my impression is based solely on what I've had at the Fairfax and Merrifield locations. I've been to this location multiple times since it opened, and for the price, the food is great. The pricing is weird; the menu says they charge for extra sauce, and I see people here complaining about that, but every time I've ordered, the guy squirts on the sauce, then asks if I want more (no charge). I've also seen an employee walking around when business is slow, asking if folks want more sauce. On the flip side, they charge 50 cents extra if you want a few jalapenos; that's a free topping anywhere else. The ordering process needs work. It's an assembly line setup, but when I've been in on Friday nights and weekends, usually there are only two people working behind the counter. One person puts the rice and meat in the bowl, and the other has to add the sauce/toppings and run the register. This leads to long backups, especially when difficult customers come along. Their process doesn't really have a system for french fries at all. They're made to order, so someone behind the counter has to stop what they're doing and put some in the fryer, and they're usually not done when the customer gets to the register. The cashier has to interrupt his work to take the fries out and box them up. If there are multiple customers with fries, it gets confusing fast, and generally I'm halfway done with my meal by the time the fries are out. All in all, it's good cheap food, but they need another person behind the counter and a better ordering procedure. read more
