I've been to NYC many times as a tourist and have never eaten at Halal guys which is a staple in the city. Saw this was located by my work and came here during my lunch break. I got the small chicken platter and got the free toppings including the lettuce and tomatoes. And of course, I had to get the infamous "white sauce." TBH my expectations were a little higher for this. The white sauce just tasted like mayo (which is what it is anyways). The chicken was just okay too. At least the small platter was a good size to fill me up. I think this is a "healthier" meal (without the white sauce) compared to fried foods if you're searching for a late night treat. I have been a fan of The Halal Guys for what has to be DECADES now, but this trip was disappointing. I think the best food comes from the cart, but I have enjoyed meals from the restaurants, including this one before. To start, the man plating my food was very personable. When it came to white sauce, he understood the assignment. I was having problems understanding the woman on the register, but that was probably a 'me' problem. I think she kept asking me something, but I just couldn't grasp what was being said. I had a small plate of chicken over rice, with lettuce, tomato and of course white sauce. Along with a fountain drink. The food was alright. It was room temperature at best. It didn't help that I had it drowned in white sauce though. About the sauce, it just wasn't hitting. It had a heavy mayo taste, or it was just generally off. Didn't have that 'tang' I'm usually so in love with. Finally, the biggest issue I had this visit was the uncomfortable seating. I'd noticed this before, but since I never ate in, wasn't too much of a big deal. The counters here are tall, shoulder height for me. Yet the stools are SUPER low. I know improper stool height doesn't sound like it should be a big deal, but it makes for some uncomfortable eating. The good thing about their brick and mortar stores compared to the cart is that they're open late until 4am most nights and 5am other nights. It's not a big space and it's more of a to-go spot but there are some seats for you to sit and eat. I ordered the chicken platter ($11.29) with extra white sauce. Unfortunately the meat was bland and on the dry side but the white sauce helped to mask the dryness. That stuff is addicting and I recommend you get yours with extra white sauce as well. Beware that you should not do the same with the red sauce because even a little bit is already very spicy (see below). It was a relatively inexpensive meal and works great as a late night drunchies spot. The staff was not super friendly and one of the workers gave me extra red sauce even when I said I didn't want it. It was pretty damn spicy and left me in pain all night and the next morning. Looking back I should've just pushed the red sauce to the side to reduce the pain but hindsight is 20/20. I do think the chicken is pretty bland without any of the sauce and visually just doesn't look that appealing pre-sauce... but I feel like the protein portion is pretty generous at least. I recently visited this location. I love the fact that its so bright inside and very clean. When i walked in, i went directly towards the back to order my food. I asked for a beef bowl to go. I guess the guy didnt hear me because he gave me chicken. I didn't complain and just took it. The guy at the register was really nice. He told me a few times that i could go back and have the guy remake my plate. I didnt bother to because 1. It was already made and 2. I didnt mind having the chicken. The food was really good. I love being able to have packets of white sauce and hot sauce. It is alot of food so I always have left overs to reheat so having the extra sauce is amazing. The chicken plate came with yellow rice, tomatoes, lettuce and pita bread. I had them add white sauce on top. Overall i cant wait to return. I'm not sure if prices went up at the actual cart but I felt like $12 for a large halal platter and a bottle water is way more than I've ever spent for Halal Guys or Halal in general. Still, you do get a pretty substantial portion. My stomach wasn't too happy with me the next day but I knew what I was getting myself in to. I didn't eat all day and at 9pm when you're walking by on 1st avenue, the smell really lures you in. I managed to eat the entire platter in one sitting and was practically out of breath when I finished. There's not much to say that hasn't been said already in the reviews but when it comes to fast casual Halal food, in my opinion, no one does it better. If your in the mood to chow down on a ton of rice, chicken, lamb, white and hot sauce, this is your place. Having this brick and mortar location in union square is such a good move. The line was almost half-way to the door but it moved super quick. Not happy with my experience here. Food is probably fine (can't be fully impartial because Im so angry), but there's a million places to get this exact same food so service/honesty matters more. tl,dr: they ripped me off and therefore I don't want anyone to support them. It's one of those places that has a big TV screen as a menu, with big pictures and instructions for how to order: (1) Pick format: Platter or Sandwich (2) Pick your Protein! (3) pick toppings! etc. Which is fine. Helpful, even. At step 1 they show prices for small platter, large platter, sandwich, maybe some other things like extras - baba ganoush, extra pita, drinks, whatever. At step 2 they list all the proteins and also mention a combo for proteins "pick any two". There are no prices here so I think it's reasonable to think that all these options are part of the price listed in step 1. At step 3 there are a list of possible toppings and sauce options which are included with the meal, as well as a few items which cost extra and say things like "$1 extra". With this in mind, I ordered a small platter for $10.99 and chose the combo: falafel and lamb, and added baba ganoush for $1 extra. The server even double checked with me and mentioned it was $1 extra when I asked for it. OK. Bring my food to the check out counter and the cashier rings me up for $19.99. I tell them that I ordered a small platter and was expecting to pay $11.99, she says that the lamb costs extra. I look back at the menu screen - there is NOTHING indicating a different price for lamb. Just an asterisk which says "limited time only". WTF? I say ok I'll pay but state that I am officially Not Happy about this transaction. She offers to give me the Student Discount which brings the price down to something like $18. Maybe I was too tired and flustered and should have dug my heels in and demanded they charge me the right price, or left the food at the counter and walked out, or some other thing. But I paid and even left a tip for some reason. Anyway I officially Do Not Like Halal Guys. They ripped me off and their prices are not listed accurately. Is the food good? Who knows! Spite is not good seasoning. Neither is resentment, regret, and the feeling of being a chump. I thiiiiiiink it tastes just about exactly the same as most of the "lamb/chicken/beef over rice" carts around the city, maybe a little more processed/fastfoody tasting, way more expensive, the rice is red, and its served by a dishonest business. read more

I wasn't sure if my usual spot in front of my office building is open right now since most of the offices in the building are still closed, so I suggested we just head over to Halal Guys since it's a storefront. I kind of wish we had just cruised around looking for a halal cart. The price for extra white sauce went up from $1.00 to $1.39. This wouldn't be such an annoyance if they actually gave you enough white sauce to begin with. For our two regular platters, they gave us only 1 packet of white sauce for free. If I had not purchased another packet just in case, we would've had to share. They also only give you one hot sauce packet for 2 platters? A regular platter is now $10.39, which feels obscene? The amount of meat I get in the platter seems to decrease with every visit. There is certainly no lack of lettuce in the platter, but I feel like my platter is just getting smaller and smaller each time. I can get a better tasting platter for a little more than half that price elsewhere. I think this might be my last time visiting this storefront. I guess if you want the true experience you have to go to the original location on the 53rd St. I got a large combo with chicken and beef to go. They put lot of white sauce, very little hot sauce. I thought that they had hot sauce packets that they included with the takeout, but I guess you need to ask for it. The beef was bit dried out, however the chicken was good. The rice was ok as well - overall, the experience from this place was not the same as the experience from 53rd. I guess next time I stopped by the city, I'll have to make it up to 53rd. read more

Gone are the days where you'd line up at the original cart on 53rd and 6th and order a heaping mixed platter for $6 and actually felt full from finishing it. The meat portion served here was bland, not to mention minuscule. They most certainly didn't skimp out on the lettuce and diced tomato, that's for sure. I hate the word LITERALLY, but my platter was LITERALLY half veg. This is just your average Halah platter. Its nothing out of this world. They use the same processed gyro meat and chopped up lettuce and tomatoes. The chicken is extremely bland! Its very soggy and has no seasoning. I would say this. The falafel is very good. A little burnt but tasty.
