Great place, great food; always busy, expect to stand in line. It's a fairly quick assembly-line style process, so the line moves fast. Food is top quality, probably not the healthiest, but nonetheless a delicious alternative to your local kabob joint but still getting the halal fix. After hearing much of the hype about the legendary Halal Guys, I finally had the chance the check it out! I came on a Tuesday night, and there was no wait. The staff was extremely friendly, and the food assembly process was SO fast. I ordered a Combo Regular platter (chicken, beef gyro, rice, lettuce, tomato, white sauce). The regular platter is enough to share with two moderately hungry people (it's a lot of food) and totals around ~$8. Overall, it is yummy and cheap! The beef gyro is somewhat salty, but the flavors were definitely all there. The food wasn't bad, but it is a place I'd only come to once in a few months. Beef gyro!!! That's my favorite dish from The Halal Guys. The platters are so good as well. However, I am hooked to the beef gyro. I have been to this location several times now and it just makes you keep coming back. The owner is a very nice guy. He is very friendly and helps with you in any way he can. The employees are also very smiley and makes you feel welcoming. I will be keep coming back here again and again. Just FYI: Even though the address says Avenir Place, the shop is actually located facing Gallows Road. This can cause some confusion trying to find the place especially if you are going there for the first time and using Waze or Google Maps. read more

If you're looking for the authentic NY cart experience, look elsewhere. Not surprised that everything is different, from the portions -- to the taste and quality. I understand you wanted to create a buzz about opening in NOVA, but it's ridiculous that even a week after opening there is still a line coming out of the door. Staff doesn't speak very good English (with th exception of the cashier) and it doesn't help that music is being blasted inside so loud in addition to the sound of the line cook chopping up meat with his utensil. It's a very disorganized and sloppy operation. And as much as I enjoy the original Halal guys, I can't justify waiting in such a long line for less than mediocre food and service. I'm a fan on the Halal Guys food cart in NYC so I was really excited for them to open. We waited a while because we didn't want to stand in the lines. When we finally tried it it definitely satisfied our cravings. I chose to get the mix of chicken and gyro meat. What makes it so great for me is the sauce though. I'll have to remember to mix it up better next time because near the end I ran out and it's not as tasty without it. I had the small platter and it is plenty of food. I wish the restaurant was a bit bigger though. There are only a few seats. During the winter I can see it being a hassle unless you live nearby. Can't wait for the Braddock Rd one to open as it is closer for us. read more

I came here for a recent late night run and I got flashbacks to all the times that I huddled around the corner of the cart at 53rd and 6th back in New York during my winter breaks as a poor college student. Man - good times. I would pour endless amounts of the amazing white sauce and then pour way too much hot sauce and bbq sauce and get destroyed the next morning (BBS). My poor stomach. I made the same mistake last night. Got way too much hot sauce. But it was oh so worth the pain. It was worth all of it. It was glorious tasting. It doesn't taste as grimy and gritty as the carts in Manhattan, probably because they had to have stricter quality standards as they franchised out. But maybe it's just my memory tainted by nostalgia. Get the combo platter. Generous portions, same great taste. Update: Went here twice after my first visit. It's still the same slow chipotle line, even though they have 6 to 8 people "helping out" customers. Everytime we go here, they always mix the orders up. They look hella confused. If you hire that much people to scoop food into a bowl, how can you not get it right? Seriously, how many people do you need to make a chicken platter. It's starting to look like the number of employees is the problem, because there's lack of communication when they pass down the platter. Went here when they had their grand opening. I went to their original location in NY and it was decent but when I went here it was just okay. Maybe it is cuz I am being ungrateful and spoiled and live close to one now instead of having to travel 4 hours to get one. Maybe thats it but it is just all hype in my opinion. Its good for but nothing that will knock your socks off. Definitely have to come try halal guys if you never had it before. Warning their spicy sauce is VERY SPICY!!!! lol so get a lot of white sauce. My perfect ratio would be 3:1. 75% white sauce and 25% spicy sauce. Finally got to try Halal Guys! After hearing about this place for a while, I was excited to try it and while it wasn't the best thing ever, I thought it was a very solid four out of five stars. I got the regular sized combo platter with chicken and gyro meat with a tiny streak of the spicy sauce (apparently it's very spicy but I didn't think it was spicy at all...). You get a good amount of food for the price and everything tastes good. I don't have that much to say about it other than that it was good. My husband and I would drive 4-5 hours just to get a taste of these amazing platters -- so really, what could be more amazing than having this location open in your city?! I'll tell you what -- their superb customer service! They haven't even officially opened yet and have already fed God knows how many people for FREE ! -- this is called impeccable customer service. My husband and I were absolutely impressed by not only this gesture-- but also at the mere fact that the quality remained untouched, regardless of the fact that the food was complimentary. Not only that -- but their customer service was also outstanding !!! Every staff member-- manager, server, cashier, etc. had a smile on their face and greeted customers with absolute warmth! When I went to the Halal Guys in NYC I really didn't understand the hype. The portions were big but it didn't blow my mind. I decided to give it a second try here in NOVA and again while it wasn't the most delicious thing I've eaten, it was good, well priced, and relatively inexpensive. I enjoyed it more my second try. I got the regular combo platter (chicken and gyro) with white sauce and hot sauce. I definitely prefer the chicken so next time I head back, I'll just stick with the chicken. What really made the visit for me was the staff. Charlie was extremely nice and clearly loved what he was doing. The rest of the crew was friendly and quick. Parking wasn't terrible even though I went at prime lunch time. Some parallel parking available but Halal Guys is pretty close to the metro so I just popped $0.25 in for 15 mins at a metered spot. I love that they are open late because I'm Not going to wait in a long line with so much other good food all over merrifield and mosaic. I got the combo with white and red sauce. If you see how little of the hot sauce they put on, don't get cocky and tell them to double it up. It's freaking hot! Probably habanero peppers. If you can't handle hot, make sure to avoid it. The gyro platter was good. The spicy red sauce has a lot of heat but did not over power the dish. If you are not into spicy food, ask for the red sauce on the side or none at all. I've been walking by this place for weeks wondering if it'd be good, spoiler: it is. The menu is very simple, you choose either a sandwich or platter, then choose chicken, gyro (beef), or falafel. In terms of sauces you get either a red or white sauce. Apparently, the red sauce is "hot." It's flavorful but IMO it's not bad - even when I asked for a bunch. I cannot believe I haven't had this place before! It's amazing and the people working here is so great. I wish their space was larger but that's the only downside. There's plenty of parking too which is always nice. I ordered the small chicken and gyro platter with both the white and hot sauce on it. It was a perfect portion. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. I also got a side of the pita which is good but nothing special. We got an order of the baklava which was very crisp. Okay - I find it super odd that the owner specifically did not expand from his cart for so many years because he was so afraid of the quality deteriorating as a result of mass production. But when he finally came around to it - his fears came true!! Look - the food isn't bad, but you just cant compare it to the OG cart in NYC. Here, the food is not fresh and that is my issue. I know this is based on the NYC food cart of the same name... However it just doesn't compare. Having been to the original food cart on 53rd St & 6th Ave in Midtown NYC. I've eaten at the food cart at least 20+ times over the years when I've had trips to NYC. So I'm quite familiar with the food and service that I got in NY. I was soo excited about hearing about the store opening here in VA but it's really a disappointment. The staff at this Merrifield location seemed really confused on the process of making a bowl of Chicken and Rice. At the food cart in NY your dish is prepared by just 2 people, very fast and efficient!! At the Merrifield location for some odd reason they have 7-8 people passing your food down the line. This creates significant confusion and it took almost 5 minutes for my dish to make it to the end of the prep line. By the time they had finished my food it was room temperature, not hot at all. The Management here should take a good look at how to streamline this process. Now onto the sauces there was something off with the white sauce, it was extremely oily seemed to have possibly separated? The hot sauce was the same as I remembered it but that's not hard to mess up. At this point I seriously doubt I'll be eating here again... They would need to make significant changes to staffing and the food preparation to make me reconsider it!! read more

The Halal Guys never fail for a good ole casual meal. It's fast food that doesn't feel like fast food if ya know what I'm saying. I always get the platter combo with chicken and beef which comes with rice, lettuce and tomato, some pieces of bread, white sauce, spicy sauce, and BBQ sauce to sweeten it up a bit.
