My bride and I sat at the bar. Our intentions were to indulge in raw oysters, on this particular night, and how late we arrived, there was only a Virginia oyster left, and it was quite small. However, after reviewing the menu in detail, we quickly landed on other appetizers that sounded great. We had the shrimp ceviche and the cold, boiled shrimp (blackened). OMG-they were delicious!!! To start, the portion of ceviche was GREAT! And the size of the boiled shrimp was much larger than we expected. (I had no method to weigh the portion, but I'm guessing there was more than one half pound!). Because we sat at the bar, the attentiveness of the bartender (Melissa) was a HUGE factor in our experience. MEL KILLED IT! Following our appetizers, we both chose the blackened fish sandwich, which, on this particular night, was grouper. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! It was cooked to perfection, served steaming hot, and was delicious. The roll it was served on made the sandwich even better! My bride had sweet potato fries and I had cheese grits. I added their branded hot sauce to my grits which were marvelous. The place was crowded, but the staff had everything well in control. Even though the place was full, it was still easy to carry on a comfortable conversation without effort. This was an excellent experience which we will repeat in the next several days. The food is absolutely fantastic. We had the Blue Crab BLT and Blackened Fish sandwich. Bacon wrapped green beans beat out the cheesy grits as a side but both were great. The thing that stole the show was the butter cake. I rarely order dessert but would come back just for the butter cake. read more

I got the special for the night which was the tripletail which was pan seared to perfection, topped with grilled tomato and two grilled shrimp on a bed of crab rice. Delicious! I especially enjoyed the rice, the lemon butter sauce, and the shrimp. Matter of fact, 3/4 meals ordered included shrimp, 2 grilled and 1 fried, and everyone commented on how fresh the shrimp tasted. The green beans, though cooked to death, had good flavor. We also got a side of sautéed veggies (yellow squash, zucchini, and red onion) and it was sooooo good! The water is ummm.... Let's just say an acquired taste. We encountered this elsewhere the island, so it's nothing specific to this place. Just thought I'd warn you! Drink something else; ANYTHING else! Service: Wonderful! I had multiple people to tell us to try half shell. It just wasn't that good. Shrimp were horrible.

I've been wanting to come here for awhile and was glad I finally made it. I ordered their ceviche and their catch of the day (golden tilefish) and overall had a great lunch Their ceviche tasted good but a little disappointing because there seemed to be a lack of seafood in it. Most of the cup was filled with diced tomatoes and shredded lettuce and the shrimp that did come with it wasn't wasn't as plump as I was hoping. The wontons were slightly sweet but paired nicely with all of the acidic action going on in the ceviche. I just wished it came with a little more shrimp or fish or at least some avocado. Their catch of the day was golden tilefish, a mild fish. I asked for it blackened with cheesy grits and green beans with shiitake mushroom. The entire meal was excellent altogether but the green beans for some reason stood out the most. You don't usually see green beans and shiitake combined but it was pretty delicious and something I'm going to start making more often. The fish was flaky, blackened perfectly and is something I would definitely recommend if it's the fish of the day for you too! read more

Can I give this place a 6*?!? We loved The Half Shell. When people say they love the bacon wrapped green beans, yes. They're legit. Definitely get them! Our entire party also agrees that the onion rings are some of the best we've had in a LONG time. Great! My dad and I got the "catch of the day," which was a Tilefish (first time I've ever heard of that one), and we got it "crab crusted." Outstanding. Good flavor, very light, but plenty of food. My wife got crab cakes and my sis got a crab cake sandwich. Crispy on the outside with a good Cajun flavor to them. Portion size for everyone was good size. And the crazy part is that my sis is kinda anti-seafood. Oh, and the cheese grits were also really good. Service was outstanding, and our food came out fast too. After ordering we waited maybe 10 - 15 mins. Every person cleaned their plates. The butter cake was also very good, as many other reviewers have mentioned. It's like a warm chess bar topped with vanilla ice cream. Even the drinks were good and not overpriced. We have eaten at The Half Shell the past 2 times we visited the Island and have really enjoyed it both times. Thanks to the bartender at another (not so good) restaurant in the Village for recommending it to us. The first visit I had the crab cake sandwich that was great; made with real lump crab meat that was seasoned just right. Also that night we had a side of sweet potato fries that were also great. But this last visit to THS we ordered a couple of soups; crab bisque and a broccoli cheese soup. My wife loved the broccoli cheese soup and I was very fond of my crab bisque. The Half Shell offers a full bar with some specialty drinks that looked rather tasty and they carry a few beers on tap. The staff here are super friendly and will take good care of you. It's probably going to be go to place for food in the Village from now on. read more

Personally, the experience of enjoying freshly caught seafood at a neighborhood joint is hard to beat. Indeed, this what I got at The Half Shell and what else can I possibly ask for? As a matter of fact, I had to do no asking. Their family recipe white brownie was beyond any expectations and I was told that it's a must by the waitress. Not only was it the best brownie I've ever tasted, but one of the best desserts I've had in my life. Delicate, soft texture, moist, lightly sweetened and delicious! The main course wasn't too shabby either. As their catch of the day happened to be flounder, I decided to get it Cajun style and it was once phenomenal. AMAZING! It was about an hour wait but we put our names down, took a walk to the pier and got back and were sat down. So felt like no wait at all. Our waitress was very attentive. The meal was so good. My husband had a thick pork chop that tasted delicious along with fries and onion rings. We got hot, peel and eat shrimp that came with a sauce I wasn't familiar with along with the standard cocktail sauce. I wasn't going to try it but I did and oh wow it was mmmmmm. This is by far the best seafood we've had. The fried shrimp was crisp and seasoned perfectly. The tarter sauce was really good. This restaurant is incredible!! If you are staying at the sea island resort or on Simons island, make your way over to this restaurant! They don't take reservations and when we were there was a 30 minute wait (she told us that was about normal) but it was totally worth it!! Everything we tried was amazing and the service was incredible! The waiter portrayed southern hospitality and was sure that we were enjoying everything we tried. We had the shrimp cocktail for an appetizer which was spiced up and delicious! For dinner entrees we tried everything from burgers, steaks and pork chops to crab cakes, crab cake crusted mahi and lobster bisque. The pork chop was so tender, perfectly cooked and had great flavor! I would totally recommend it!! Another favorite was the crab crusted mahi which was a special of the day and amazing. Love this place on SSI. I go down every so often to see my grandparents and we usually stop here if we want good food. The atmosphere here is dark and relaxing, nice to visit for a date night. Servers are nice. Only complaint is that the food has been hit or miss around SSI recently. read more

Been to this establishment three times and it was the bomb dot come every visit. I had the crab cake BLT 5 stars, the bbq shrimp and grits 5 stars, and the half shell burger, also 5 stars. The atmosphere is a beachy, chill, dive bar vibe and the place is small but doesn't feel cramped. Cassandra was the waitress I remember having by name and she was perfect and professional. We were greeted and promptly seated after arriving and I ordered a "Summer Fashioned" and my wife ordered a "Sangria" off of their specialty drink menu. Both of us would rate the drinks as merely "meh." Nothing special. I would probably just go with a bottle of Guinness or a glass of wine next time.
