Half Shell was highly recommended and was well worth the trip. It was crowded, even on a rainy Thursday night, and it was clear why - great service, delicious feed, and a cool set-up (glass encased shells at the bar, starfish chandeliers, and other interesting decor). While the menu was not extensive, The Half Shell offered several favorites and prepared them all well. I recommend the crab cakes to anyone looking to order appetizers. You will not be disappointed! The onion rings also were very well flavored (beer-battered and crispy). The mahi mahi basket was delicious and very filling. Our table was not very impressed with the "award-winning" ceviche, which we felt was too much tomato and lime, and not enough everything else (maybe it was an off night?). The Half Shell was definitely worth visiting again and its location a few blocks from the pier and shops makes it a great spot for an after dinner walk to burn off the meal or before dinner walk to build an appetite. read more

Half Shell used to be our go to place on a weekend, at least twice a month. The draw has been their raw oysters which were always fresh and plump and my wife loved their crab cakes. First of all, the past two times we ate there, the oysters were not up to par. they seemed per-shucked, dried out, pieces of shell in them, and just didn't taste fresh. Had to ask the waitress to send them back for a better batch, which she did. But still not what we expected based on past experiences. My wife's crab cakes had a very fishy taste and were greasy. I ordered the fried flounder which was just ok but the $32.00 for this meal was way overpriced. Actually the prices have gone up while quality has gone down. We are disappointed and may have to find a new favorite restaurant. read more

Dogs are permitted on the patio. Try the award winning bloody Mary. Raw oysters are reasonably priced. Try the Georgia peel & eat shrimp warm.....delicious. The service is prompt and genuinely friendly. We will be back!! read more

The good was really good! I ordered the blackened shrimp, crab cake, and cheese grits. The cheese grits and crab cake were delicious! The grits were nice and creamy. The crab cake was well seasoned. The shrimp on the other hand were just okay. The cook put too much of the Blackened seasoning on the shrimp. I also tried the butter cake. If you go to this restraint then it's a must you try the cake! It's served warm and melts in your mouth. read more

Not the first time at the Half-Shell, so I think it is time for a review. Arrived on a Thursday with some friends and was seated right away. James the bar tender took our drink order and some appz. I ordered the crab soup which was very good. My main meal was crab cakes with bacon wrapped green beans (awesome) and onion rings. The food was excellent and so was the service. We chose the Half Shell as our final restaurant on our Family vacation because I wanted raw oysters. We did not realize exactly what we were walking into. We got red snapper tacos, crab cakes,crab cake burger, strawberry mandarin orange salad, ceviche oysters and barbecue shrimp and grits along with the raw oysters!!! OMG it was so awesome. Great food and service! You will have a wait but a cocktail from the bar can help with passing the time. The hostess, wait staff and bar tender were all hustling effectively while providing warm, friendly service. The Rickshaw cocktail is complex tasty and begs to be repeated! The pompano special, raw oysters and crab cakes were delicious! We had dinner a couple nights in a row!! On our next trip to St Simon Island The Half Shell will be on the 'to do' list!! read more

This restaurant has a good menu and the servers are very friendly. But besides the waitstaff and restaurant employees, no masks were worn by any customers- and the design of the restaurant is very narrow, so that made me uncomfortable. I don't even think there was a sign on the window suggesting use of masks or social distancing. Get food from here to go, and don't forget the butter cake. read more

Most of our party had the catch of the day, crab encrusted flounder- oh my, YUM! The fish was so fresh! The sides we tried were: the roasted veggies-perfectly done with lots of flavor- no limp veggies here! The cheese grits were so good I was licking the spoon. I'm town for conference, checked my Yelp app and here I am. We only had appetizers and drinks here and headed elsewhere for dinner as my Director thought the menu was more of a lunch style menu. We enjoyed the Cajun oysters and the ceviche oysters first. Both were excellent. The only qualm he had was he likes it when the kitchen takes the time to fully remove the oyster from shell and leave it in the shell to eat from it. All of ours were stuck to the shell which wasn't a big deal for me. Cajun had perfect spice. The cheese on top crisped up. They were great. The ceviche oysters were bomb.com. Their ceviche is outstanding!!! Oysters were topped was local shrimp ceviche and lime. The ceviche was so good we ordered the appetizer ceviche. Local shrimp, tomato, red onion, red pepper, cilantro, lime and fried wonton skins. We asked if they sold it buy the pound but sadly they did not. The final appetizer we tried were the open face tuna tacos which consisted of sesame seared rare ahi tuna, sweet chili slaw (that was pure perfection....perfectly balanced flavors) topped with cilantro lime cream on top of wonton skins. AH-MAZING! The staff was super friendly. Everyone helped one another out as this place is busy busy with a constant wait. The bar area was really small, maybe sat 10-12 people. That is where we initially wanted to sit. Instead we were placed outside which was great because the weather was beautiful. Only downside to that is those that are waiting are standing really close to your table waiting for their name to be called. All in all I would totally go back! read more

Very dog friendly on the patio, but also pretty busy. We had the Georgia Shrimp, fried with blackened mahi. Very tasty and for desert we had their famous butter cake. It's the only desert on their menu for a reason! Very tasty with homemade vanilla ice cream. read more

Just left this restaurant. Great choice. Wonderful Bloody Mary's. We ordered Calamari for an appetizer. It was the best. Lightly breaded and so tender. We then ordered the Oysters Fredrica on the half shell and salad for our main meal. They were okay but not the best. When covered in bacon, mushrooms, spinach and Asiago cheese you couldn't find the oysters. There was too much bacon and it dominated the taste. They weren't real hot either. My hubby had the fried oyster platter and they were very good. All in all it was a great place to eat. We would go back again. Oh and William was our waiter. He's new but did a great job. read more

Everyone liked their selections although on the first night we were there my Mahi was overdone which made it pretty dry. We had an excellent meal here on Father's Day. We were there at about 430 so we did not run into a wait time. It was happy hour so we were able to order done drinks. My son ended up drinking 3 great beers, I ordered the pineapple punch and my daughter in law had white sangria. We started off our meal with broiled oysters and calamari. My husband ordered the crab cakes, my son ordered shrimp and grits, daughter in law ordered ahi tuna tacos and I got the fried shrimp. All of the food was very good, but the absolutely best thing was the bacon wrapped green beans! Wow! So unique and tasty. For dessert we ordered the butter cake. It's the ooeey gooey butter cake made famous by Paula Deen. Overall a great meal. read more

We dined I'm on a Sunday evening. We were four adults and three kids and were seated right away. Most every table was full so we must have gotten there at the right time. They carry coke products so that was a plus for me bc I really don't like Pepsi. I got the Ahi tuna open faced tacos and do not recommend them. It was 7 thin slices of tuna with slaw on a cracker and I was left wanting for more as I was still hungry. Also, it was priced too high at $20 for that. Everyone else seemed to like what they got. The bar looked cool and the ambiance was nice. I would return to give it another try. read more

Fantastic experience. The restaurant brought us back in time. Loved that. The folks working there were happy to see us, so friendly and very willing to answer our questions, provide recommendations! My humble compliments to this establishment for creating such a great environment. The food was also outstanding. The Shrimp & Grits was great. My wife had the Catch of the day-Triple Tail.
