For those of us who live here and want something more authentic, Handpulled Noodle is a great option that doesn't require a train ride to Chinatown. 1. Tried the dapan-Ji hand pulled wide and flat noodles with mild spice with chicken. This was my favorite of the noodles dishes we tried. The beef stew is thick so it's more like a gravy sauce texture- is not a noodle soup dish since it's not watery. Feels more like a wet stir fry. The spicy was the perfect amount of spice. I love Handpulled Noodle! I've had a few of their veggie-based stir fry options. My favourite is the traditional stir fry with handpulled ribbon noodles and seitan. The seitan is juicy and flavorful, and the ribbon noodles are amazing. If you like spice, I highly recommend getting the extra chili oil. If you come here, expect a long wait. The place is casual and tiny with limited seating; luckily my brother and I were able to score seats after a family finished their meal. There was a line to the door as people waited to place orders and the guy at the counter juggled with placing phone orders at the same time. They seemed understaffed, we waited a good 30-40 minutes before receiving our food. Thankfully, we weren't in a hurry. The dishes were delicious. Right of the bat I knew this place would be a hit, since it's located right next to two local and happening bars! Major points! I almost always get the scallion pancakes (vegan fyi),and they are always perfect every time. It has the right amounts of crispy, flavor and enough sodium for my buds! Now my favorite noodles are the ribbon site fry with veggies and seitan. As others have noted they can adjust the heat. I would come up with a scale of hotness but I don't want to offend anyone here! I had to check this place out after seeing one of my friends post a pic of their noodle soup they got here. It's still a little far away from me, but its worth the 30 blocks to pick up some legit northern Chinese food. The place is tiny, and although they recommend eating the noodles there, I can't see it really happening because there are only about 7 seats, and they are cramped. Still, I opened my noodles (Old Beijing Bolognese) and took a few bites in the restaurant. Delicious. And at first I thought it looked like a puny portion, but its just because the takeout bowl is SO huge - after I ate it I was totally stuffed. I also grabbed some beef dumplings out of curiosity but since I was so stuffed after the noodles, I only tried one and gave the rest to my roommate. I'd probably try another filling next time. I got the make your own noodle with medium spice and it was spicy!! Good but more spice than I could personally handle

Second time round, ordered: Spicy Cumin Lamb with Lagman / Scallion Pancakes / Beef Dumplings This place is now officially my favorite place for Spicy Cumin Lamb noodles (sorry Xi'an). Besides the ability to order this dish with any of the noodles on offer there are some clear things about how they serve it here verses the way Xi'an does it that puts them leagues above. Firstly, they actually wok fry the meat here per serving as you are supposed to. The kitchen pick-up is actually as legit as you can get. What XF does is pretty far removed from how it's done traditionally - instead of wok frying the meat it sits in a soupy container that is ladled into your noodles almost as a sauce. Don't get me wrong, it's still flavorful, but it's like comparing a taco cart to a legit restaurant. The devil is in the details and while this place does charge a little more I'm happy to pay the difference for better quality meat and no corner cutting in the preparation of the meal. The scallion pancakes were the highlight for me. If you've never been to China and eaten one from a stall wandering around the hutongs of Beijing, then chances are you've never had a real scallion pancake. Not to say the super crunchy/crispy ones you typically get in Chinese restaurants here in the US are bad, cause sure they are tasty too, but it's not the real thing. This is the real thing. You may not actually prefer it this way over the Americanized way (I love Chipotle more than I love real Mexican food - don't judge) but they get plus points for authenticity. Finally the beef dumplings - juicy, big filling, super flavorful perfect crust to the seared base of the dumpling. A few yelpers and I, had a SundayFunday outing, doing various activities including dining at The Handpulled Noodle. I was glad that I was able to try this spot because I didn't know how long we were going to be hanging in the area. I shared the spicy cumin lamb with the ribbon noodle dish. I was concerned about the spiciness because my eating partner isn't too fond of spicy foods. The cashier said we were able to adjust the spiciness. I asked for it to be light to medium. It was very tasty and the level of spiciness was perfect. The noodles had a nice chewy, tender bite to it. The lamb didn't have that pungent lamb taste. I was actually sad that this place was soo far away. They also have a self-serve cooler filled with water and cucumbers. Well, I couldn't see any cucumbers but I definitely tasted it in the water which is different. Not many establishments, if any, serve cucumber steeped water. This is my go to neighborhood spot. Seriously, I didn't know what life was before handpulled noodle showed me new meaning. I'd never had handpulled noodle before and now I am a huge fan. I've had their mutton soup and spicy beef soup. I'd go for spicy beef soup, the mutton taste very muttony, that is like old very earthy meat. I've also had the stir fried beef and lamb. Both are good. Again I'd go with beef because the lamb here is more fresh lamb tasting but sometimes it can be gamey. The actual flavoring in the dishes is only yummy if you go with a spice level. Without spicy I find that noodle (in both the soup and stir fry) lack depth of flavor. The soup broth is very mild not a robust flavor and not very beefy tasting. The noodles don't have many flavors embedded in the moisture either. The vegetables they stir fry it with don't have time to caramelize or wilt in order to give the stir fry more flavor. The black vinegar can give some of the noodles flavor if they're lacking but I like spicy so I just go for a nice spice level and this seems to be the best way to get good flavored noodles or soup. This is why I'd take one star. I don't always want spicy food but here it seems spicy is the only way to ensure a flavorful dish. I've also tried the dumpling and low key these are the stars of the menu. The beef and daikon and lamb dumplings are poppin'. Don't sleep on these if you can't but that credit card minimum. Get u some dumplings and you won't regret it! I will return, I'm something of a regular. We found this place after visiting the Taste Of Asia festival in Times Square. The spicy cumin noodles that was so good, we just had to visit their restaurant in Harlem right away! This place can be hard to find unless you know the exact address of the place. The decor is quite interesting, with one wall papered in aged Chinese newspapers. There is a counter that goes around the wall with bar stools for you to sit and enjoy your food. This place can be pretty busy but from what we saw when we were there, no one really hang around for too long. Most of them will leave right away after they finished their food. When we were at the festival, we've tried their spicy cumin lamb ding ding noodle & it was really good. When we got to the restaurant, one of us really wants to get their spicy cumin lamb noodle but not a big fan of lamb so we got the seitan instead of the lamb. We also got the one with beef soup & a side of of pork n' chive dumplings. The food was amazing! The spicy cumin with seitan was absolutely delicious! We asked them to make it spicy & the level of spiciness was just perfect! If you can't handle spicy food, make sure you tell them when you place the order so they can help you adjust the spicy level. The one with beef soup were also good but we liked the spicy cumin a lot more. The dumplings were just decent, nothing special. All total, we spent about $27. If you don't want to buy a drink, water is free here. The portion were pretty good. We were definitely full & satisfied with our meal there. Great service! The staff here were friendly & polite. Cute storefront restaurant offering fresh Chinese noodle and dumpling dishes. Vegetarian friendly! I ordered their spicy cumin seitan with lagman noodle. Usually I can handle spice well, but their "medium" was way too hot for me (thankfully the tasty chrysanthemum tea I ordered helped cool me off). The noodles had a beautiful texture and the cumin and fresh herb sauce was amazing, but next time I go I will definitely be choosing mild! A heads up: there's only a handful of stools if you're planning on sitting. Their menu is as petite as their dining area in that they pretty much only offer noodles, salad and dumplings. However, the unique combination of the ingredients in their dishes will make ordering a hard decision. I have never seen a Chinese restaurant with a menu such as theirs, so that alone makes it totally worth visiting. I had the Langman noodles with traditional stirfry and beef. It was wonderful! A little spicy and a little soothing I loved the noodles. I have made my own noodles in the past and I think these are just delicious! The atmosphere is very unique and takes you to a different place. I love the deco - it's very clever. We sat in front of the big window which was tipped open on a warm Mother's Day. The effort that was put into such a tiny place is really paying off. I would come here just for the lamb carrot dumplings. The soup in them was flavorful. The texture of the skin was on point. Just the right touch of springiness. I also liked how they fried them a bit (technically making them pot stickers not dumplings, but I'll allow it because they were delicious.) The pork chives dumplings had good skin but the xian or the inside meat was dry and needed more flavor. To the chef: try a fattier portion of pork or some more sesame oil. The dan dan mien was good. The flavorings and thin cucumber slices melded well. The only complaint here is that the hand pulled noodles were a touch too tough. This goes for the ribbon noodles in the da niu (beef noodle dish) as well. I've found with many hand pulled noodles restaurants that I wish they used a different flour:water ratio for the noodle in their soups than their sautéed dishes. What turns out a perfect texture in soup (or as a dumpling) ends up being too tough when just sautéed. Their version of the beef noodle soup left much to be desired. I wouldn't order this again. In addition to the noodles being too tough, it was too sugary. The sugar in the sauce overpowered the complex flavors I usually enjoy in my beef noodle soup. The beef cubes in it were stylistically cool to look at, but terrible to chew. They were dry and very unpleasant. I usually look for a tender, melt in your mouth beef chunks in my beef noodle soup. The scallion pancakes also weren't that great. They were all fried and crispy but did not have the chewiness or the flavor of scallion pancakes. There were not that many scallions inside the pancake and instead there were raw green onions on top. I get that this is a fusion place, but this just didn't work for me. I know I probably sound really picky. My dad's family is from the Hunan region in China and we LOVE hand pulled noodles. We grew up making dumplings together all the time. Beef noodle soup is the prized dish for us, so yeah we're picky because we love these dishes. And I will definitely be back for the lamb dumplings, the dan dan mien and to try the ding ding noodles which we didn't get to try this time. read more
