Being the gypsy that I am (thank you bay area real estate economy) I tend to move every year and dread the moving process and have become a pro at it. I have to say this company takes a huge burden off my shoulders. They are THE best movers I have ever worked with and I've had to move twice in 1 year due to black mold in my apartment. They were able to move us out of a third floor apartment with NO elevator and not damage any of our items. Booking them was super easy and when it was discovered in less than a month that we had black mold in our Archstone San Mateo apartment they came right back packed everything up and moved us again. These guys were the best movers we have ever hired! They showed up on time, worked hard, and brought the appropriate equipment for some of our extremely heavy items (including an extra truck!). They worked much faster than I had expected, which saved us some money, and they never once so much as flinched at any of the challenges. Our move date kept moving around (due to circumstances beyond our control), yet Kristen was very patient with us and accommodated us in having to reschedule the move date a number of times. I am SO glad my family made the decision to go with Handy Movers. Our awesome experience started off with Kristen. She walked me through the process over the phone. We went room by room detailing the large furniture items so she knew exactly how many guys and trucks to send. She helped me secure our move date and was so kind and helpful during our multiple calls. Fast forward to the day before our move. My husband's work schedule changed and it was just going to be me and the movers. I was a little anxious. Roberto called me to let me know when they were 15 minutes out. The crews showed up, instantly put me at ease and said they would handle everything. Four guys - Roberto (the foreman), Jose, Mario and Rigo. These guys are FAST! They had a 2500 sq. foot house loaded in a little over an hour. They set up FREE wardrobe boxes for all the bedding and any loose items. I had most items labeled with the rooms they belonged in, but the items I hadn't labeled the guys labeled so they were put in the appropriate room at the new house. The whole time the guys were so, so helpful and kind. A few of my furniture pieces were damaged (not by them) loose legs etc and the guys got their tools out and fixed them! How amazing is that!! At the new house the guys made sure everything was put in a location that made it easier for me to unload. They didn't want me to have to move any huge heavy boxes or furniture. Before the guys left we walked the house again to make sure everything was in the correct location. Everything was perfect. And as a side note - this company is the only company in the area that regularly checks their trucks for bed bugs! This company is the real deal. Hello Yelp Fans, My husband and I bought our first place and to our dismay the place we bought has 3 stair cases. It was never an option to do the move ourselves but who to choose. After reading all the reviews on yelp it was an easy decision - The Handy Movers. And after the move is complete I have an even better opinion about the company. First, I had planned on 3 men doing the move but only two arrived (at first). The third man arrived 2 hours after the move (family emergency) but what I was really impressed with was how it was handled. I was informed immediately and told they would get another worker asap. When the additional man arrived the boss brought us all Starbucks. Second, they treated my possessions as there own. The wrapped everything perfect! I had movers from a different company move us before and I had walls damaged, scratched furniture, and even a broken coffee table. This company was quick, hard working, and professional. Third, the crew - Roberto R, Jesus V, and Joss R were all great guys. Really appreciate the attention to detail, furniture placement help, and most of all your hard work. Best, decision, ever!!! George, Michael, and Adrien were our movers today and my husband and I couldn't be happier! They arrived on time, ready to go. They were super fast, efficient, and took very good care of our stuff! Negative stars-- hands down the WORST moving experience I have had in twenty-five years (that would be out 7 moves: 3 interstate, and 4 intra-city). Maybe they are OK for local moves. Maybe they are OK if you have multiple adults around to help you supervise the packing up and loading. For me, though, having hired them for a week day, loading up long-distance U-Pack cubes, they were an absolute nightmare. Don't hire them for packing long distance moving cubes. I could not be more sorry I ever hired them. Moral of the story: If you don't need these guys all day, don't hire them at all. If they double book over you (obviously they won't tell you if they do and that's exactly what they did to me), you -- and ALL your possessions-- get pounded with the consequences, not them. **************** The long version of the story: The job I agreed to with Kristin on the phone: Handy Movers would send 2 guys to wrap my furniture with both blankets and shrink wrap, help tape boxes shut, bring boxes suitable for two electric radiators, and load everything into my U-pack moving containers compactly to minimize both potential for damage in transit, and cost. I booked and paid for 4 hours, because that is their minimum. What Handy Movers delivered: They were supposed to be on my job from 10AM-2PM. They arrived a bit after 10AM--I needed more time to get things organized, so asked them to go take a 2 hour coffee break on me, and come back from 12-2PM-- all within the agreed (and charged for!) window. THEY REFUSED TO LEAVE and proceeded to throw my possessions willy nilly into the moving cubes. Why? I eventually got it out of them that they were supposed to be somewhere else at noon. They double booked over my job! Within 15 minutes of arrival they were both panic stricken and (because they were supposed to be somewhere else) refused to shrink wrap my furniture in spite of my repeated requests, put my $3K rug in the cube wrapped in NOTHING, packed one cube 3/4-full, and two additional cubes 1/4-full each. That's right: 1.5 U-pack cubes of stuff, scattered chaotically into 3 cubes, costing me several hundred additional dollars for a completely unnecessary 3rd cube, to say nothing of all the shifting and breaking that happened because the cubes were packed badly. All of this was confirmed by the movers who unloaded them. It doesn't really matter what the office person agrees to if the guys who arrive can't/won't do it because the moving company double booked them! In spite of what Kristin agreed to, when I asked the guys to shrink wrap my furniture, they refused-- using trash bags, tape, and MY towels instead. Things I didn't see until unloading at my destination because there was only one of me and I didn't see this part of the loading-up: the very aggressive guy, Adrian, taped MY TOWELS around a rack of birch wood trays, wrecking both. They didn't box the electric radiators, just threw them into the moving cubes to rattle around at the top. They didn't even bother to secure the cords so they wouldn't hang all over the place/get yanked out/broken. Also thrown into the top, wrapped in nothing, three wooden chairs jammed together and tossed in sideways so of course they smacked against each other and the backs broke where they meet the seat of the chairs. I had a stack of boxes by the door I had asked the Handy Movers to tape shut. I didn't see it until unloading, but they didn't do that either. (Maybe you don't need to tape boxes shut for local moves, but for long-distance, you do: DUST control, for one, and for two, if you don't tape the box shut, the load on top of the box rides on the contents of the box below instead of the box. There is road dust in EVERYTHING, and 80% of the boxes arrived crushed.) Trash bags, by the way, abraded against everything they rubbed against, so much of my furniture looks like it's covered with skid marks. This, presumably, is why reputable movers (The Handy Movers are NOT in that category in my experience) use SHRINK WRAP and not trash bags. I don't have a single stick of furniture that escaped the Handy Movers undamaged, not one stick. If I were still local to the Bay Area, I would take them to court. They didn't utter a single peep, NOT ONE PEEP about "on-site" load-in being exempt from damage claims until after they stormed through, NOT ONE PEEP-- no wonder they didn't care if they destroyed stuff. If I wasn't so sleep deprived from packing up the week before, I would have realized I should have thrown them both out within the first five minutes, but I got caught off-guard. Day labor off the street would have been better. read more

Everything would of been ok. there were a few things that got me going in the negative direction. 1st. I was asking them to bring my tools to the balcony because thats what i wanted and made the most sense for the space. The mover Jesse said " you hired us to move the heavy things not the light ones" Well jessie the tools were part of my things and were Heavy..... 2nd I paid for three hours, Thats there minumium. Well they were rushing to get done and wanting to leave after two hours. I explained to him that your office said you will help me put furniture togethor. I dont think he was very enthused at this point.1st flat screen base ... so so . 2nd table the hex bolts on bottom require a box wrench or adjustable. he used a all in one tool, the pliers he used marred up the bolts. well thats all i had to see. i told him i got the rest myself. I called about 5 moving companies I found on yelp and chose this one due to price (lowest with yelp and cash discount), great yelp reviews and their web page which mentioned they bring shrink wrap to wrap things for you for free. Not disappointed. We had three guys load two 16' storage containers and a 26' truck in about 4 hours. They loaded the containers with heavy furniture items like a puzzle and wrapped and moved things with care. They even wrote on the outside of shrink wrap if something was glass so the unloaders would know. They were on-time and quick and patient. I will definitely use them again. read more
