    New York Steak Sandwich
    Michael F.

Nice place, great view of the airport. Our server, Mike, was great - very friendly and helpful. The food is where this place needs to improve. We ordered the New York Steak Sandwich and the BBQ Western Cheeseburger. The steak on the sandwich didn't taste fresh. It wasn't over or under cooked, I could only describe it as "freezer" taste. The BBQ Western Cheeseburger had a similar flavor to the patty. The BBQ sauce and the other toppings tasted fresh, but the patty didn't. I'd be willing to try this place again based on the location and the service - but I'd try something other than the beef.

If you know anything about Gunsmoke BBQ and Beer in Santa Paula, you know their barbecue already…read morehas a solid reputation....but finally making it into their restaurant just confirmed everything I'd been hearing. I've had the chance to try their BBQ at local events around Ventura County, and it always left an impression. They make some darn good BBQ. BUT for this visit we ended up highlighting something just as exciting...their vegetarian options! It definitely says a lot when a barbecue place has great non meat options. I came with my friend Raquel (yelp elite) for lunch and we went all in on their vegetarian plates...well with one exception, we ordered the deviled eggs too. Let's start there: Their famous Candied Bacon Deviled Eggs are a must. Creamy, flavorful filling, lightly battered egg, topped with crispy bacon...yeah, they're as good as they sound. 10/10. Now for the vegetarian standouts: The Fried Avocado Bites were simple but done so right. Perfectly fried and paired with house made sauces that really brought everything together. Super shareable and perfect as a starter. 10/10. The Cauliflower Tacos were a reminder that you absolutely do NOT need meat for a great taco. These were hearty and loaded with (again) incredible sauces. My friend was obsessed and I get why. They were good, but I would prefer a meat protein taco at a spot like this. 7/10 for me. Beyond the food, the experience really shines here. The space has this perfect mix of country charm and rock n roll edge which is such a fun vibe. Service was top notch, and we love when owners are present and genuinely care. They stopped by to check in, which always makes a place feel extra special. And shoutout to our server Bentley, an absolute sweetheart. Next time you're in Santa Paula, do yourself a favor and check them out.

Gunsmoke is located in Downtown Santa Paula. I didn't pay close attention but I don't believe they have private parking. If you don't know SP, there is street parking and some parking lots. I would be mindful when you are planning to come for parking. I came with a friend midday so there was plenty of parking and seats as well so we got seated right away. I was happy to see the non meat options they have available. I was a bit bummed out they didn't have their hummus but it's just another excuse for me to go back. I did end up getting their cauliflower tacos. My friend got their avocado fries and their devil eggs. I had never had devil eggs, and tried those and were so good. I wanted more but I had already had all my tacos. I did appreciate the owner coming to greet us and finding out I was pescatarian. He was nice, mentioned that even though they are a BBQ spot, they still want to value those customers that don't eat, and asked if there's anything I think of to let him know to see if they can add it to the menu. Really appreciated that. Overall, bummed out I wasn't able to try their BBQ. The options I did try were all really good. I would come back.

We were there a bit early so we needed to wait 15 or so minutes for it to open per the time listed here on Yelp. We hung out on the sidewalk counting the seconds until noon, only to be disappointed as we walked by and saw a sign in the door that said 1pm. We continued on our way and went to another local bar only to return hours later via car because I had had my exercise for the day. We got lucky in finding a parking spot because this is a small area, so cross your fingers. We found 2 seats at the bar and marvelled at the selection of microbrews. For a Saturday afternoon, the place slowly filled up with locals as everyone watched the basketball finals on the tvs. Bartender was very welcoming as were the locals we chatted with. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but did find something to drink. My partner was in heaven sampling and trying new brews. Would love to return later in the evening to see how this place fills up and to enjoy more of the locals and what it would be like living in this hidden community. So shhhh! It was actually bad, the crust kinda reminded me of when the kids were little and we took them to Chuck E Cheese. Regardless, the beer was good and even though it was packed Saturday night, we didn't have any issues finding a table.

After a quick check on yelp, this place came highly recommended. I was a little bit worried when I arrived. We were the only people in the entire restaurant. My wife and I were seated quickly. I did appreciate that the menu was not overly complicated. It made it easy to make our selections. They also did offer happy hour specials during the week. I opted for the double Smashburger and fries. The Smashburger comes with their signature sauce, which you can order at a few different spice levels. The girl at the counter said that normally people go with the regular spice level so I opted for that. When my burger and fries arrived, I was quite surprised at the portion sizes. My basket was filled with french fries and my burger was pleasantly large. In regards to the flavor I do have to say this was probably one of the best tasting burgers I have ever had. I didn't want to note that they do use sweet pickles on their burgers here. But it just works with the flavor that they're going for. My wife ordered the "my girlfriend is not hungry" sampler platter. This came with fries, onion rings, pretzel bites chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks. Everything was great tasting. Their onion rings were cooked to absolute perfection. The restaurant itself on the inside is a little bit small so I could imagine on days that they are busy. It might get a little bit cramped. I did also wanna mention that I did like that. They had a changing table in the restroom. That was a nice touch that you honestly do not see at a lot of restaurants even the mainstream ones.
