Gosh if only my stomach was a black hole. Thick textured chili with no beans but good amount of meat served with a freakishly (and heavenly) amount of cheese. SCORE! One thing that I am disappointed is that depending on the shift they give inconsistent results. Some times my pastrami dips will be loaded with pastrami, other times not so much. Some times my chili cheese fries have two layers of chili for the cheese to melt thoroughly, other times I get jipped into having only one layer of chili and have an overload of cheese. ENVIRONMENT: Personally I'm very neutral about the environment here, besides hating on the small amount of parking spots here. Hey Kids and Kidette's, welcome back to yet another one of my reviews! Today, I want to talk about Corned Beef and my favorite, Pastrami sandwiches!!! Now, I fancy myself as someone knowledgeable on the subject. For me, there are several really good places for both, Canter's Deli, and The Katella Deli to name two but, this review is for The Hat in Monterey Park. If you wish to get the abbreviated version of this review, skip it altogether and go to either Canter's or, Katella. Confidence is high you'll get a great meal there! The Hat proclaims to be "World Famous", it says so on their sign out front and on their drink cups. They are also celebrating their 65th year with 11 locations from Pasadena/Alhambra to Murrieta. So, one might think they know a thing or, two about Pastrami? Mmmm, no, not in my opinion. Their Pastrami Dip, shown promenently in the center of their menu on the wall, cost $9.69. This is a good value on its own however, you pay extra for a medium drink and fries. When you factor in taxes, the final charge for this meal is a whopping $17.05, $2.69 for the drink and $3.19 for the fries. Now that you have gotten over the sticker shock, you might be hoping for a fantastic meal well, don't get your hopes up. I start with the fries because cold fries are just no good so, I dive into those first. My fries were lightly no, barely salted, had no taste, were limp - which is never a good thing and not worth $3.19 in fact, I think I only ate 0.19 cents worth. Moving on, I ordered a Lemonade only because I'm desperately trying to avoid carbonation. The only choice you get is Pink. Okay, enough said there! Now on to the main event, the Pastrami. My sandwich came within a minute, no exaggeration, from the time I placed my order. After being disappointed in the fries I was looking forward to what I really came for. The sandwich is served on a wheat roll, with a few pickle slices, no pickle wedges and Mustard, Yellow not Brown. The Pastrami has no taste, it's barely seasoned and wet. None of this was worth what I paid for it!! I don't know if The Hat was world famous somewhere else. Perhaps other locations take greater care in the preparation of their meals. For me, The Hat in Monterey Park is not worth anything! I recently discovered Pastrami Fries this past summer and was craving some the other day so I drove up to Monterey Park just to satisfy it. Compared to The Hat back in the OC, this one is a little small. There isn't a lot of seating, so you might be forced to wait around or sit at the table outside if you plan on eating in. As far as I could tell, the quality of the Pastrami Fries here was just like the one back in the OC. I would advise eating Pastrami Fries with a partner just so that your arteries aren't begging for mercy. If you're a fan of carne asada fries, Pastrami Fries are definitely worth trying. read more

I did steal a few forkfulls of chili cheese fries but they were well worth the calories! Chili seems more watery and less chunky than I remember but still a must try. How is it possible that I have never written a review of this restaurant that I've frequented for 20+ years. The consistent quality across all their locations really is impressive. The fast food joint has been around since the early 50s if I'm not mistaken and was a family run operation. The pictures on the walls tell the story much better. Ultimately their pastrami dip sandwich is the queen that comes dipped in au jus. I always ask for a side of au just to get that bite nice and wet before I pop it into my mouth. Coupled with the spicy yellow chilis the experience is heaven. The sandwich isn't cheap but it's worth it. I only wish there was a location west of the 110. I will drive 15-20 miles to get me one from west la. Their fries are amazing. Do not make the mistake of ordering two or a large because the regular is large enough for 2-3 people no problem. I love to get them regular, or add pickles and tomatoes. They also offer them with pastrami or whatever else you can think to have them pile on there. DH gets a pastrami sandwich or a French dip. It always seems as if I remember to take the photos when the sandwiches are down to just one bite. Most of the sandwiches are close to $10. Although service is fast, make no mistake, this is not a fast food quality meal. Buns are always soft, meat portions are very generous, juicy but not soggy. First time coming to this place and it was great! The chili is the best. I was a fan of tommys chili until now, there is a new chili sheriff in town. Definitely get pastrami and chili here. I made the mistake of under estimating the food portions. If you get the chili fries make sure you have someone to share with otherwise just get a side of it for your fries. Parking at this location is good but plan ahead if your coming during lunch time as it get packed.
