This place is an LA icon. We have been coming for years. Today, we came here after a Dodger game and it was packed with fans. The place is small for the volume of people that come here but we were able to sit down to eat. We shared a pastrami dip and onion rings and my son also had the chili dog. And of course, all with an Orange Bang. Everything was so good. Had a huge case of FOMO when I saw several other clients eating their pastrami chili cheese fries. I've been to other The Hat locations and this one delivers the same high quality food! Mom got her pastrami and loved it!!! She said it was exactly what she had been craving... mission accomplished :) My Son and I had the Roast Beef w/ Gravy and shared an order of Gravy Fries. Oh so good, the gravy is thick and rich and the roast beef was well cooked and sliced fresh. Gravy fries are one of my favorite things and these are top shelf. It's been a very long time going to The Hat and at this location. I would say about 10 years. The time was 6:30pm last night and we were able to get a table. There was no line so I was able to place my order quickly. The food has definitely changed over the years in my opinion when it comes to the size of the pastrami dip. This is in a good location. It's right next to the East Los Angeles Community College and across the street from other retail shops and restaurants. There is a designated parking lot, but it can get packed during dinner time and late night. The consistent thing about this restaurant is that the portions for anything you order here are always HUGE. My husband and I usually get a small size of one side (onion rings or fries) and we're always full. We also typically will have leftovers. I ordered a Tuna sandwich and split a small side of onion rings with my husband. The sandwich was good. The tomato tasted a little weird so I ended up taking it out. Onion rings were good and crispy. It's their signature sandwich, and I would definitely recommend it. Chili Cheese Fries- I ordered these, and it seemed like every single person in the joint was ordering these, too! They hook you up with a MASSIVE pile of fries that are topped with some shredded cheese and then topped with a couple of ladles of hot chili. Portion size alone makes these worth it. The chili was plentiful and hot, but it was lacking a little bit of flavor. Just a tad bland, needed some more "umph/spice". Still a good order of chili cheese fries, but Tommy's chili cheese fries still reign supreme in Los Angeles (IMO). This place always scratches an itch. 12/23/2024 The Hat 2300 S. Atlantic Blvd Monterey Park, CA 91754 I went there around noon on a Monday and took the last parking space in the smallish lot around the building. There were many people standing and waiting for their orders. I ordered and paid at the register and given a numbered stub and receipt, the last digits on the stub is your order that is called. The interior seating is fast food bench style and can get full, but turn around is quick. After about 5 minutes, I got my Chili Dog with onions and the Pastrami Dip. The grilled split dog had a generous messy amount of Chili. The Chili was flavorful and a little spicy. This is the best Chili Dog in the area, I've tried three other places nearby. The pastrami was plentiful and tasty (not too salty) with a few pickles on top. Prices were reasonable and a good value. Definitely repeatable especially for the Chili Dog. read more

There plenty of places to grab lunch at in Los Angeles but on October 8th (2023), The Hat was the most convenient place to get something to eat. Usually when I travel, I try to be more curated with my cuisine but I didn't have that luxury on this occasion. Nonetheless, I think the name and notoriety of this chain is the best thing about it. I stopped at this location around 1:15pm on a Sunday for lunch with a special friend. It was a long weekend and we were preparing for a long day so I figured I'd load up on calories. The location was intentionally nostalgic and had a curious appeal to it. The physical appeal definitely stands out given the area. We ordered from their menu outdoors and sat on the patio near the parking lot. I ordered the Chili Cheese burger with no onions and fries. There wasn't almost anyone else ordering or arriving so our food came out pretty fast. They give you an entire bag full of fries and the burger was both robust and sloppy. The burger was well cooked and tolerable but the chili was bland and it didn't seem worth the mess after it was all over with. It was a messy meal for sure, it definitely filled me up, and we got fries for the road but I wasn't necessarily ecstatic about the experience afterwards. I don't mean to bash the establishment, the workers or the food. Being from Oklahoma, I'm very accustomed to seeing diner and drive-in-themed restaurants except, they usually deliver a more satiating, cheap and deliciously unhealthy meal. I think The Hat is good for what it is. Who knows, maybe I went at the wrong time or ordered the wrong thing, but I'm not too encouraged to return unless under the right circumstances. read more
