I see them going to the back to get one bread to make my sandwich when there is already a lot of bread in the front counter . I observed this many times . They also laugh when they make and give me my food . Then when I complained they acted like they can not speak English. I tip off my hat to The Hat for having one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've ever had. There's several reasons that attribute to this. To start, the pastrami is very eatable without having to eat excessive fat portions. The bread roll is a reasonable size where it does not take away the delicious taste of the pastrami itself. The amount of pickles and mustard is just the right amount to give the sandwich that extra flavor. The overall size is reasonable but I'd recommend to share this between two people. And here's the reason why. They also have chili cheese fries, gravy fries, and regular fries too. The catch is that any portion can feed anywhere from two up to four people. It really is a large portion! They also offer hamburgers and sandwiches but that's not why you come to The Hat. By the way the do have free refills on all their drinks..and they also serve my favorite, Orange Bang. Now I do love coming to The Hat but I do only visit here a maximum of two times a year. And for me, that's more than enough to appreciate and enjoy a great tasting pastrami sandwich. If you're visiting LA, it's a must try. read more

I've been coming here off and on ever since they opened this store. I think I had most items on the menu, and for the most part is really good. Lately I've been buying a lot of chili fries with cheddar cheese and their tamales. The chili fries I can never finish by myself, but since I order with cheddar I can't wait to get my fork and dig into the partially melted cheese with chili. Oh, so delicious!! The tamales (one large piece) is not your typical Mexican variety tamale. It's kinda like the one you can buy at the supermarket with shredded beef inside, but larger, and they top it off with tomatoes, chili, cheese, and onions. It's not bad. I love the chile cheese fries, although I think the Hat always undercooks them. The potatoes are previously frozen, not fresh cut, but I like them anyway. I ask for mine extra well done, which slows my order up considerably. One order is too big for one person, I think the order is meant to be shared. I've asked them to split my order into two separate containers, but they refuse. The Hat has their way of doing things and nothing, not even courtesy for a long time customer will sway them. I always take my order to go, so I would like to share my split fries here at home, and it's much easier as two separate servings. This location has an indoor dining room that the location on Garfield doesn't, so that's a plus. But only two, or three outdoor tables. The entire location gets mobbed by hungry students during the lunch and dinner rush since its located near East Los Angeles College. The parking lot is too small, and almost always full. Been coming here for years and never had a bad experience, until today. We live far away and ordered a few items with chili... and the chili was not good, almost inedible. It tasted like there was bleach in it, or made in a pot that was heavily bleached or they used water with chlorine in it. I can talk about the pastrami for days but really is good is the Roast Beef sandwiches. You can get those in 3 great ways: Plain, BBQ and Gravy. The fries aren't good so once the chili and cheese are gone you are left with bland, unsalted fries. They do give a generous portion of pastrami here compared to other locations I've been to. I've always loved the hat. I made a stop to this location in LA while making a trip out to LAX with the kids to pick up a relative. Very quick friendly service. Over the last few weeks, I've driven past 'The Hat' on multiple occasions and really wanted to try it out. Finally, I was able to stop in this afternoon to taste their 'World Famous Pastrami'. Looking over the menu, it was a little on the pricey side. Basically, any decent sandwich will cost you ten bucks plus an extra 4+ bucks for fries. I definitely needed to try out their Pastrami, so I ordered the pastrami burger. They had some interesting french fry options that I couldn't resist, so I ordered a side of wet(gravy) fries for 5 bucks. There was a bit of a wait for my food, not ridiculous, just longer than average. One of the patrons before me left with a cardboard duffel bag full of food, so I'm sure that contributed. Finally, my number was called and I picked up my food. They never asked if I wanted it to-go, but I assume they always prepare it to-go. I opted to eat it at the restaurant. The Pastrami burger was of decent size, not huge.. but there was a pleasant abundance of pastrami. I started by eating half of the burger, the pastrami was pretty good, not great. The burger was mediocre. After eating half of the burger, there was a mess of pastrami left over that I decided to place atop my wet fries. I was shocked by the size of the wet fries for five bucks. It was more than most people could eat and there was plenty of gravy. Unfortunately, even after piling pastrami atop the wet fries, they were very bland. The fries lacked salt and could have been crispier, and the gravy lacked flavor as well. It was all just very, very bland. If I return, I'll skip the fries and just get a Pastrami sandwich.. but even that's unlikely. It wasn't a bad experience, but certainly not a great one. read more

This review has been long overdue. I was here on 2/14/17, 3/3/17, 4/11/17 and 5/27/17. I cannot leave California without having my favorite pastrami with chili. The pastrami here is so delicious that I cannot continue to stress how delicious this pastrami is. Given their reputation for their wonderful pastrami is why I continue to visit when I come to California. Came here twice already and it is a pretty good fast food place. I got the chili cheese fries (the big version) and pickles/tomatoes on the side (which I recommend getting, it adds a balance) and it FILLED 4 people who were hungry. I was skeptical about the cheese at first because it wasn't melted but it eventually melted as it came near the chili. They have a variety of sauces and an old look on the inside (not a fan of the wood but it'll do) It is a VERY overwhelmed junk food dish!! read more
