not gonna lie these folks definitely racist and judgmental. went in there last year with some black friends told us we closing in ten minutes. just to let you know it was like 6 pm. haven't been in a year since that day until today! me and my friend go in and take a seat a waiter sees us and walks by. we're thinking he's gonna get a menu for us. three minutes pass by. then four. then five. then he passes us again and locks eyes with us. and comes back once someone points me out saying "dang bra when we gonna get a menu" after i ask for the menu for the menu he leaves and starts talking to people then filling up drinks at the bar area. and steady talking to people he knows who comes in regularly. so we wait another 4 minutes and finally get a menu. at that point we get up and leave cause they also expensive. back to judgmental. everyone is eyeing us down and mean mugging us thinking we weird for being in there. mf were white to and so what if we weren't? folks act like color is everything omg stop ts we all bleed the same at the end of the day ‍ bad experience never coming back and that's on my momma read more

Stopped in yesterday for breakfast. The food as always was wonderful, the wait time was not! We had a large group so patient is how I go ( YES, I called ahead, called twice! ). This is not an easy review for me to do- I wanted to like this place and had asked the Hubby if we could stop there a few times. Now- I'm sorry to say we won't return. When we arrived only one other party was there. There were still Mrs. Butterworth bottle on the tables from breakfast ( I liked those). The waitress came to our table and told us they only had tea and juice because the fountain was not working- that was ok, I ordered water, he had tea- she then said we have no straws- then the fun began. I tried to order the mushroom Swiss burger, but they were out of mushroom, tried to get fried pickles- they were out ,just ordered a cheeseburger with ketchup and mustard, Hubby tried to order fish, they were out, soup- not in season, ordered honey BBQ wings and onion rings- the only other customers ordered appetizers, potato skins, fried ravioli etc- they were out! We could hear them in the kitchen trying to figure out how to sauce the wings- they came out with it poured on top- Burger had cheese and mustard- she brought ketchup packets to the table and said they were out in the kitchen- when hubby picked up the packets there was a used one in them- our waitress did grab it and throw it when he pointed it out. Even worse- I went into the ladies room - the stalls were dirty, didn't lock or even close and there was no hand soap or paper towels- it really grossed me out! Stopped in for an early Saturday morning breakfast. Only 3 tables of people - food came out in a timely fashion but was very bad. Biscuits were cold, grits were undercooked and basically inedible, coffee was below average, and has browns weren't good at all. The scrambled eggs were decent. No pre-made frozen product here. Also had a hash brown casserole side...so good. Not listed on the menu, so just ask & you shall receive. The large southern biscuits met every expectation I had...and then some. My partner had PaPa's Big Breakfast with country ham. Didn't know there was city ham & country ham...so go with the country ham because you can get city ham everywhere. Service was friendly and they were so welcoming. I would love to give this place 5 stars but we waited almost half an hour and still never got our order taken. A kind patron in the joint told us there were extra credits on the juke box so we picked a couple songs. Another kind patron told the owners we were still waiting and apologized for the wait. In particular, the "Papaw's Big Breakfast". It came with pancakes. Two pancakes. Two pancakes the size of my head!!!! MASSIVE! Large, fluffy, rich pancakes! The bacon was just awesome. The eggs were perfect, the hash browns too. ....and then there was the biscuit. This biscuit was the size of my fist! It stood probably 5" tall!!! Which leads me to my next statement. Next time I'm getting the biscuits and gravy platter! So, all in all, if you pull up and see this place as a "no man's land/off limits" destination.... you would be making a big mistake. There really isn't a better place to go in the Millington area for breakfast besides The Haystack. Whenever I have anything to do in the morning around these parts, I come here for a nice meal. In fact, it's always the same meal every time (because it's that good), and I'm very pleased with the homestyle atmosphere. You will not find better biscuits anywhere in the county, that's a promise. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that the interior does leave more to be desired. It's not as clean as it should be, and the fact there exists a smoking section is a bit of a turn-off. The next time I went was for their all you can eat catfish special. I'd say it's a bit difficult to mess up fried catfish so it was pretty much like any other catfish I've had. OMG - I just have to start this by saying we were HIGHLY disappointed in this place. First time going there as we had heard they were good. Arrived and they were a little busy. Only waited for a minute or two for them to clean a table for us. One server for the whole place. One person cleaning tables. I want to say ONE cook for the place as well. Server said she was just helping out for the day and was not the normal person. (Should have been a red flag to leave). After getting our drinks we placed our order for breakfast. We had 5 tables in front of us that had ordered but sill no food. They were delivering food as it was ready but none of the tables seem to get their entire check delivered at the same time. One or two people and then about 5 minutes later a third person, etc. The server kept checking on us to make sure we were okay with our drinks. After an hour and 10 minutes our food started coming out. Our egg plates were first out. As soon as I looked at mine, I said "Oh no" this needs to go back. You need to cook the eggs. They were very lightly scrambled and still had runny eggs in them. My husband kept his. Then we got the Pancakes & Biscuits & Gravy. I take the first bite of the biscuits and gravy and it is cold. Not luke warm, but cold. My husband took his first bite of his sausage and spit it out. Cold and he asked what it was. It did not have any flavor of a sausage patty. That is when my husband said "After all this time and we get crappy food. We are out of here" As we were leaving the server said, "I understand. Drinks are on the house." Wow, drinks on the house. We had 2 iced teas. Yeah, after over an hour I would hope the drinks would be free. I am normally not a patient person but yesterday I was to only be burned. As a diabetic you have to eat to maintain your sugars. I waited as I was hungry and needed the food to only be disappointed and leaving hungry and weak. First time in the area. Went with my wife and was greeted immediately and offered a drink and menus. Then things went south from there, after ordering another gentleman's order was taken after us and he seemed to be a regular based on the greeting he received and first name basis used. About 40 minutes later he received his to go order, mind you we got there first and ordered before him. 10 minutes later (50 minutes total) we received out food. We ordered a country fried steak an omelette and 2 pancakes. They forgot my biscuit with the country fried steak but I didn't bother asking since the steak was VERY chewy and watery, not even rare or anything which tells me it was old and sitting. The taste was very bland and I had to add salt and pepper to EVERYTHING. The steak, gravy, eggs, hash brown... whatever was on the plate I added to it. My wife's omelette was very chewy and bland also, she also stated the cheese was very generic like that craft cheese. The pancakes while they were huge, were bland, dry and burnt on the bottom. Even syrup couldn't make it better. I'm not sure how there are so many good reviews, probably because those were by regulars. While we aren't regulars we sure could have become one if it was a good experience. So overall one to none stars, food took and tasted bland, you're not priority unless you're a regular. Meal costed $30, would've been better off with more things at McDonalds. read more

I really wanted to like the haystack for breakfast. I pass it on the way to work and dream of a breakfast from a bar that looks like it could be served in a grungy 80s movie. The service was amazing and they were very nice to us the entire time. My wife and I got the big breakfast with must have breakfast items covered. The eggs and bacon were good, and the biscuits were a little different than typical biscuits. The pancakes were just okay and sadly the coffee was a no go. We thought we could deal with the cigarette smoke but in actuality it definitely affected our experience. We will definitely go for karaoke and to hang out and possibly again for breakfast, but my expectations will be a little lower next time. read more

I'm so glad we stopped here. We had camped at Shelby Forest and were headed back to Nashville. I was looking for a place we could stop and grab lunch. The Haystack popped up on Yelp with great reviews and amazing pictures of biscuits! The pictures don't lie! There is a big parking lot which was great since we were pulling our new 35'ft camper! If it wasn't for Yelp we would have driven right past this place and I'm so glad we didn't. The ladies were wonderful as soon as we walked in! The menu was lunch on one side and breakfast on the other. I asked if breakfast was still being served and oh it was! I got the western omelette, biscuit, side of gravy and hash brown casserole! The biscuit was better than the pictures but the hash brown casserole is something to write home about! Husband had the burger and let's just say he devoured it! This isn't a Bubba burger. It's a handmade true blue manly burger! The picture isn't great because we couldn't wait to dig in! Just go and enjoy! It gets a one star because I have to give it something to make a post. Visiting Millington for a college baseball game and several folks recommended the Haystack for breakfast. It was horrible experience! We were a table of 4 and there was only one other table of people before us. Our server "Red" was new...long hair not pulled back and heels...she was more worried about walking around looking good and wiggling her attributes than serving...didn't know how to write down the order or apparently get it to the kitchen. We had to ask for drink refills and where our food was more than once. Meanwhile the restaurant is filling up and people long after us are being served and one table of 6 gets up and leaves after waiting to be acknowledged. A different server tries to help us and we give our order once again. We did ask the second server how long it would be because we needed to get the baseball field and she said she would move us to the top of the list. Overhearing...the lady in charge came over and says she will take care of us and takes our order yet again and heads to the kitchen to prepare it. Our meal comes out in stages and my husband's slice of ham makes it out as we finish up...I guess it takes longer to heat a chunk of ham than to make 6 pieces of bacon, 2 pieces of sausage, 3 pancakes, 8 eggs, hash browns and 2 pieces of French toast! They didn't bring us butter or syrup for the pancakes either so they were cold by the time we got those items. I guess we should have taken them from another sooner! One of the other patrons gets up from her table and starts taking orders and helping! The lady in charge said the regular waitress was in Daytona for bike week so she didn't have good servers. The food was "ehhhh" at best. The over easy eggs had an odd smell, the bacon wasn't cooked thoroughly and even though I didn't order onions on anything I had a piece of onion in my French toast. When it came time to pay we questioned the bill as it wasn't rang up clearly and the lady in charge took a snarky attitude with us and barked back at us "your specials were $5.99 a piece, 2 up charges at $3.99 for pan cakes and French toast and drinks were 2.99 each". We didn't expect it to be comped as there was cost in what we ate but she didn't offer an apology let alone any reduction in the cost of our subpar meal with terrible service. This place was excellent. We went to breakfast on a Saturday around 0800 to try it out. As stated in previous posts, don't let the stigma of being a bar keep you away. Inside is was well lit and clean AND no smoke smell. There was someone smoking in there and I wish they would have smoking sections...here nor there. I had the MeMaw's or MaMa's breakfast with toast (eggs, meat, hash browns) and asked for my eggs scrambled with american cheese. The food was plentiful and tasty; they cooked the eggs to perfection! We ate at the Haystack this morning for breakfast and it was hands down one of the best breakfasts I've had. GET THE HASHBROWN CASSEROLE!!! It's homemade and it was delicious. This is not a place for you salad eaters and plate pickers out there. This is big plate, southern style, homemade breakfast at its best.
