I'm thankful for having a local store with high quality choices and fair prices. People complaining about high prices should compare like for like. Just one example, the entire line of Amy's frozen foods are far cheaper here than at the supermarkets in the area. Health Nuts has organic produce and dairy items that can't be found elsewhere; same with non-dairy, vegan items and international cuisine; wide variety of bulk items at good prices. In sum, lots of which cannot be found nearby, others that can be found elsewhere are cheaper here. I also wanna give a huge shout out to the customer service. I always gets a welcoming greeting when I walk in; all cashiers are nice and friends but especially sweet is the Prussian woman at the register; super friendly staff that always joke with my kids. I have no negatives, on the rare occasion I have to return an item they don't give me flak, any questions I have are met with courteous answers. Keep up the great work! read more

This store is epic!! I came here looking for some very specific items and I found a treasure trove of so many cool healthy food products. If you're looking for something very particular or diet specific, chances are that they have it. The store is a little cramped so you have to scour to find things but they had so many health food items, including including a very large vegan and low carb product selection. The employees here were very friendly and helpful when I asked where to find things. The prices are somewhat high but that's just the nature of health foods these days unfortunately. I would definitely come back here to find health food products not carried at most grocery stores. read more

I am surprised by the negative reviews on here. The Health Nuts on 99th and Broadway is my main grocery store. No one has ever been rude to me. I try to avoid using plastic, and the Health Nuts lets me bring my own glass jars to the deli counter to be filled. They also have bulk bins for which I bring my own bags. The selection is excellent, and the produce is fresh. Yes, some items are expensive, but they're far lower than at the other health food store in the neighborhood, Uptown Whole Foods. read more

They told us you can't take them and then put them back because people don't like it when someone touches a product!!! :-). Then they screamed at us to put some items back. Meanwhile, they weren't doing any work! But our heads actually HURT from the back-and-forth SCREAMING, and a customer at the counter said it was horrible how we were treated. We're never going back. Rude & aggressive - manager yelled hysterically at me when I asked about a certain sale item in the beauty department. He asked me if "I could read" & "do I speak English" as the sale item was "organic" & the one I picked up was not. He even said he would call the police. I honestly felt that it was misogynistic. I've been coming to this store a couple of times and last Saturday I was shocked to have been treated as if I inconvenienced the counter clerk ( I think his name is Lima) when I asked about the price of a vegetable. He told me to go in the back and weigh it. Just like that he rudely ordered me and he got back on his cellphone. No one should treat a customer this way anywhere. I'm a paying customer, I was polite and for me to be treated like I was a bother tells you so much about what kind of business this is. Worse when I called their website number, the guy named Roy directed me to call their broadway branch. When I called, I spoke to the same rude man who was disrespectful to me. So I called Roy back from the ues branch and he denied ever talking to me even if I know his name lmao. A few weeks ago my daughter, 6 years old autistic son and I visited this store! It was a uncomfortable and nasty experience! As a person of color I often try not to visit stores where I will be mistreated in a certain manner based on the color of my skin/race! I am equally protective of my children, however, on this particular day my autistic son placed an item (a $3.99 soap) while I was busy placing items on the counter to be checked! Before I could take the item out of the bag, one of the Indian person who works there accosted my 6 year old son as if he was a thief " by saying you put something in your bag and you didn't pay" now mind you we were spending over $300.00 plus dollars on items! My daughter had to explain to this man that he is only 6 years old and autistic and that he was only mimicking what he see us doing and that we were going to pay for the item! Then, the guy at the cashier was rude and would not listen as I was explaining to him that my daughter and I were both going to split the payment on the items. He seemed confused about what he needed to do until another person had to come over to assist him so that we could get out of the store! I will not be visiting this store again!! I'd shopped at the midtown location for many years, less and less during Covid sinceI'm ordering more online, but more importantly because the midtown store is very small and they are not taking Covid regulations seriously. Now they've lost this neighborhood customer for good. Today I had an unfortunate incident, when I asked someone shopping in the store to put on her mask so I could get by--the aisles are very narrow-- she gave me a hard time, very nasty, and then leaned into me and coughed on me, without a mask. I was horrified. There is a sign on the door that masks are needed to enter. It's not a courtesy, it's required by NYState order of the Governor. When I asked at the checkout why they let her in without a mask, they replied with 'what could we do?' Well to begin with you can protect your customers who are shopping and abiding by the rules, by telling this woman that she can't enter. Instead you let ME be put in a very unsafe position. I told him I could report the store to the local authorities, to my councilman, for this incident, and was told to 'go ahead.' I answered that I would never do that to them, but I will also never shop there again! As I've said, I've shopped there for years, but they are not handling Covid rules properly. There are too often people in the store without masks and even the Manager, a very nice man, does not take this seriously, and has to be told to put on a mask himself when dealing directly with him. Something needs to be done. I have 2 other neighbors who are really irritated by the lax policies, one does not shop there anymore as well. read more

** LOVELY AND CHARMING OLD SCHOOL TYPE HEALTH FOOD STORE ** Let's talk about how much I love this little gem. And they know it because I tell them every time I come in :) Basically it's an old school type health food store - it's not fancy, but it is stocked to the ceiling with goodies and different brands and wonderful finds. It smells good and for some reason reminds me of shopping in the 90s. Prices are fair, about average for Manhattan. What is lovely about this store is that it is quiet - no blaring music or videos or anything like that; it's nice and peaceful so you can take your time and read labels or whatever you want. Staff are on hand, but basically leave you alone unless you need help. I love that! I am a pretty independent shopper, but the few times I have had questions, I have always gotten quick, friendly, polite assistance. The way it should be! You always meet nice people shopping in here, too. The large supermarket "health food" chain could take a lesson from this lovely, little store. There is a deli counter and juice bar and also a bulk section which I personally love. Huge selection of teas and produce and I recently found organic purple yams which I hadn't been able to locate anywhere else in the city. 3.5 stars. Can't give it four due to the cons. As a health nut myself, I find that there aren't many options for healthy food in the Manhattan Valley area. This place has been clutch for me when I'm looking for my kale fix. However, I am a health nuts who actually likes REAL ANIMAL MEAT for my protein. Sure, tofu is all fine and good and I know plenty of people are all about the vegan life now, but I'm a gym rat in addition to a health nut, so some chicken, turkey and salmon in the prepared foods section would be nice. Don't misunderstand - they do sell poultry and fish, just not at the prepared foods counter. Prices: Odd. Their produce is absurdly expensive. A tiny box of blueberries costs $7. Absolutely ridiculous. But the products that are also sold and your average supermarkets (frozen yogurt, milk, some Greek yogurt brands, etc.) are actually cheaper here. Not quite sure what accounts for that dichotomy. Prices for everything at the prepared food counter are also reasonable. Selection: So-so. I'm here every week and I'm always aware of the snack-to-actual food ratio. It's not a good one (unless you consider hemp and quinoa tortilla chips a meal...who knows). They have a vast section of frozen food and as alluded to, aisles upon aisles of snack food and cereal/granola, but they're lacking in food with real, hearty substance. Energy/nutrition bars for DAYS. In their prepared foods counter, you can usually find items such as kale slaw, steamed mixed greens, sweet potato mash, quinoa and spinach burgers, tofu curry, chickpea salad, etc. Special shoutot to the tofu curry - it's actually quite tasty. One thing that I love: they carry the only protein powder I'll use (Tera's Whey, if you were wondering). Other features: -Full juice/smoothie bar -Lots and lots and lots of natural remedies/oils/supplements -Very sweet employees that often get in your way, but you can't get mad, because they're really, really sweet. read more

I've been shopping at , Health Nut since 1984 and on 3/31/23 I bought a loaf of Canyon Gluten free bread for, 8.49 cent got home and was disappointed that the bread was molded, the wild part is a week before that the bread I bought was good, but there was only two left, returned it the next day for a refund,, I will not be buying any bread from them again. The Indian man with the glasses has an attitude issue that needs to be addressed by the owner ASAP. They do have products that Whole Foods and Trader Joe's don't carry, be sure to check the dates if you shop there. read more

I like this place because it has a good variety of meatless/vegan options so for that I'd give 4 stars. but taking a star off because their produce section is an awful 2 stars. very little variety - and the other day I bought $17.77 worth of cherries (!! - it wasn't even that big a bag - they fit inside a 7inch diameter bowl) and when I got home half of them were rotten. for that I will not be buying produce from then again. but I will be back for the non perishable goods/frozen section. read more

Thank heavens Whole Foods opened up in the neighborhood because dealing with the trolls who work here was unpleasant. I came in once a week for a decade and not one of employees (all of whom have been there for the 10 years I shopped here) was ever anything but sour. I still pop in once in a while for squeezed juices (since the other health food store a few blocks south closed), but the unpleasantness of interacting with the scowl-faced couple in the back deli counter usually deters me unless I'm in a hurry and can't walk to another juice bar. If I could give minus points I would. Ruddest cashier ever. He just said 'what' as I lay down my purchases. I should have left then, but I'm a hungry vegan. Sat down at the little breakfast bar area, and ate my average sandwich. About to tackle the strawberry soy protein shake when one of the staff SPAT into a bin near me. Urgh! And my smoothie was disgusting, had to throw it away. No flavour whatsoever. It's a shame that this store has the worst staff ever, it could be good otherwise. BEWARE: Most of the items in the frozen section here have been expired for more than nine months. Shop here at your own risk (and be sure to read all packaging)!! This place is right near my apartment and is very convenient for healthier foods, however it is extremely difficult to find something that is actually still fresh. This is not somewhere I will be shopping ever again after the third time I went to purchase something. This place deserves 5 stars for their extensive selection of specialty foods-- specifically gluten free foods. This is among the best selection I've seen anywhere in or out of NYC. Their prices are reasonable too. People who have Celiac Disease and have trouble finding places to shop that have good options (on flour, cereal, crackers, bread, granola, cookies, and sweet treats) should certainly consider coming here. I am shopping here more and more as I become disenfranchised by Whole Foods and some of their corporate policies (not supporting GMO labeling) and a few other things. On more than one occasion at Whole Foods I have purchased organic apples that are on sale for say $1.99 and noticed at the register that they get scanned in at the regular price. If I hadn't noticed I would have been charged full price. This has also happened with chocolate bars. How much money do you think they make that way? The check-out person has no clue as to what the price really is - they wouldn't know an organic apple from a non-organic apple, and then they have to call a supervisor and one time I went all the way back downstairs and took a photo w/my phone, came back up and they were still discussing with the supervisor whether or not the apples really were on sale!! So I have come back to my"local" "family operated" neighborhood store THE HEALTH NUTSand suddenly realize that their prices are not really any higher than Whole Foods and their organic produce is much better cared for and always looks fresh. And the prices are mostly visible. The employees have been working there for the past 20 years and recognize me, say hello, smile, and actually know where things are and which products are better than others. Their Synergy Kombucha is always $3.49 per bottle, and Whole Foods is now charging upwards of $3.69 and they've had the great coconut water that I like for $3.50 per liter. So now I am supporting my local store again and hope others will too. Their bulk section is fresh too. read more

The Health Nuts have a lot of specialty food that doesn't really hold my interest but their bulk section is worth stopping into whenever I pass by. I'm not one for the Organic craze that has swept the nation so I'm not exactly the Health Nuts' target consumer but they do have a bulk section in the middle of their store that pulls me in. It's all that great peanut brittle, nut and seed brittle, granola (great in yogurt), and other goodies like yogurt covered pretzels and dried papaya that I just can't say no to. The prices I think are good for these items but I haven't really shopped around for them either. Also, they have a peanut butter machine (add peanuts get fresh peanut butter) that I am interested in trying one of these days for a price I can't remember off hand but do recall it being cheaper than buying a branded jar. Stop in and check it out, if you're into the health food stuff then I'm sure you'll find something you like. It does seem to be a bit expensive for non-bulk items though just so you are prepared. Oh also, important thing, I believe there is a $10 minimum for credit card transactions. read more

All the food was fresh (this is a huge deal for an independent health food store), the place is clean and well stocked. I was so happy to find a health food/ grocery store with all the foods from my youth- including carob peanut butter cups! Prices were reasonable for organic food in Manhattan, lower than Gary Null and Whole Foods. The staff was very helpful and friendly, and lunchtime on a weekday the store was not crowded, so it was a quick in and out trip. I am usually a Fairway customer, but sometimes I can't handle the clientele. This is my new grocery store. read more

No clue where the other comments are coming from. Granted, everyone has their 'days.' They have been OVERWHELMINGLY nice every single time I have been there. I would give a zero star if I could. Over priced and if you don't look carefully some of the items are expired on shelves!! No customer service available. When the register was backed up, the manager was too busy chatting with one of the customers telling small stories. When I asked for a back up for the registers, he told the customers to wait because he's answering questions when he was really not instead just chatting! I was shocked by this. I will concur about the rude staff. There are a couple serious duds there that just seem to be waiting to die. Fire those old krumudgeons! They suck. But my biggest issue is the constantly expired products. ALWAYS check what you are buying there, at least half the time it's expired. And beyond that, the items that aren't expired often taste spoiled (in the grab-and-go section anyways) because they don't keep the refrigerators cold enough. I bought soy milk here recently; at home, I found the expiration date had passed by more than a month. Tonight, I bought prewashed kale mix. At home, I found the plastic box open and the kale inside wilted and yellowing, even though the expiration date is over a week away. If I didn't know any better, I'd think that they put old kale salad in a new box and then put it back on the shelf.
