My wife and I enjoyed brunch at Heron Bistro today. I had the French Onion Soup Au Gratin, which was excellent. It had a great balance of onions, bread, and a beautifully toasted Gruyère topping. The broth was savory with a subtle sweetness from the caramelized onions, making it especially satisfying. For my main, I ordered the Steak Frites (coulette steak) with blue cheese brûlée. While the steak was cooked exactly as requested and the blue cheese topping was excellent, the meat itself was a bit tough and not as flavorful as I had hoped. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her French Dip and Espresso Martini and said she would happily order both again. Service was attentive and friendly, with plenty of helpful staff ensuring we had everything we needed throughout the meal. The place is nicely decorated, classy and the food is well prepared. One New York strip was cooked exactly right and the French-style seafood stew worked well with the fresh bread they served. Service was polite but not pushy. Signature drinks were great and one waitress made a very thoughtful remark to my wife just passing by the table. Sometimes its the little things that make a good restaurant beyond well done plates - a kind gesture, a smile when you enter, a thank you for coming from the bartender when you leave. If you're in Michigan city you have to stop by and have a steak here. I haven't had a steak for a long time as good as this one, I can make pretty good steaks at home, but this one has something different that I really loved, you might ask me what was that, I don't have the answer, you just have to come and order your steak, It comes with a load of fries and you can order your sauce on the side, you are going to enjoy every bite of this food and let me tell you the ambience is really relaxing perfect for a date night or just to have a bite by yourself. The service was spectacular. The bartender was always on top asking me if I needed something, we had a nice and short conversation while I waited for my food so I recommend this place 100%. read more

Great new spot. Love the moody atmosphere, especially the seating in the front. Service is great and the drinks are a cool spins on classic french offerings. Food is well prepared and fresh. Amazing French food!!! Don't stop - eat here!!! The appetizers are fabulous large enough to share. We had the carrots and tuna and beet salad for four and we're almost full! Portions are generous and shareable! The entrees are all fabulous! We covered the animals with the duck, lamb, chicken and beef bourguignon. All excellent! The beef bourguignon I was served was nothing but a plate of roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy! Not a hint of wine in the sauce--no pearl onions--no mushrooms. Half the food on the menu was unavailable. French onion soup had no flavor. 38 dollar confit of duck tasted like chicken. Waiter needs more training. The interior is unremarkable except for the interesting back wall. A bar on one side towards the front with tables in the front windows and more further back after the bar. An arrangement similar to French neighborhood bistros. The foie gras was small but tasty with toasted baguettes. On the other hand the duck fat frites were plentiful with what seemed to be a garlicky sauce (aioli, confit garlic? ) which made the fries delicious. The duck cassoulet was very tender and juicy served with a link of garlicky sausage over white beans. A nice dish for the duck starved. The poisson du marche ( market fish) was the special and had scallops among other delicacies of the sea in a creamy broth. The beef bourguignon was served plainly covered in rich sauce. Could have used a garnish to make it look like more than beef stew and perhaps glimpse of the mashed. 9 oz. Wines ranged from $17 to $25. Crème brûlée was an excellent desert. Dinner should average $75-90 per person for wine, appetizer and main and desert. A main and water will be less than $50 with tip. Or a small group sharing appetizers and drinks about the same. With such a limited menu and the generous tips due to the upscale pricing , I think the experience would have been enhanced by more information. To help better understand and appreciate your offerings, you could provide a bit more detail about each dish? For example, maybe include the key ingredients, preparation style, or any special touches that make them unique. Some dinners probably don't care so you could make the explanation optional. If you're just looking for something to eat, a meal could be had at numerous eateries for the price of an entree here. If you're just looking for an expensive place to take someone, this is it But it could also be memorable dinning experience. Now it kind of lacks the experience. read more

The food is great but the portions are astonishingly small. I ordered the rack of ribs, a $38 entry, and got one tiny rib on some puree with a few chopped zucchini. Everyone at my table agreed that it looked like an appetizer, not an entry. When my husband said something to management they said they'd changed the menu to a lamb chop and that it was an 8 ounce chop. Not in their wildest dreams was that 8 ounces of meat. It was one tiny chop. I went home hungry. read more

Good food. Strange decorating. All different kinds of lights in one room. Service was ok but the person who took our order was not the delivery waitress so thing were set in front of the wrong diners!!! Bar vibe was fun. A great mixed crowd keep working on the details. ( everything was a bit salty) but in general nice flavors . Try to get a more exciting fish if you are only going to offer one each night (salmon is pretty common place fish).
