I was looking for a bite to eat and saw the mint while I was driving by. I was then stunned with the task of finding parking that was available within a 1 mile radius. When I finally did find a parking spot, I then had to start the trek to the front door of The Mint. I had to step through loose gravel, where my child fell. Once I was able to step foot in the restaurant I was faced with outdated decor everywhere. I was then charged a tremendous amount for two steaks. The grill, which I checked the temperature of with my heat gun, was no warmer than 100 degrees. The steaks were not able to be cooked and I had a raw steak for a meal. The joint is a dump overall, where people come to find a steak and they can't.The meat tastes un-flavorful and it tasted tough. The point I'm trying to make is do not come here because you will be disappointed and dissatisfied as I was. read more

What a top notch, unique experience! Upon entering the restaurant, Dee was extremely friendly and explained the evening showing us the extraordinary cuts of meat that we were going to choose from. Matt served us and made our night very enjoyable! They, along with the rest of the world, were understaffed but you wouldn't know it. They worked hard to ensure we had excellent service. The food was phenomenal from the salad to the steaks and sides. I don't usually leave reviews, but this place was so unique, fun, and delicious, I couldn't resist. It's a definite MUST try! This is a pretty cool experience for a family. The kids enjoyed the salad bar. While it is mostly ice berg lettuce and a few veggies, it definitely was a great way to start the meal after a day of skiing. The meats were not melt in your mouth tender, or top quality cuts, but the family enjoyed cooking the steaks together, which was definitely fun. The instructions on the wall for medium were a bit on the well done side, so check it as you go. The wine options were surprisingly good. So I would recommend ordering a bottle and enjoying this experience. Worth the visit. read more

Service dogs community, be aware this place is not familiar with the ADA law. They tried to sit us in an empty part of the restaurant (not nice), then we we asked to get a better table, were told dogs are not typically allowed, but because ours were service dogs, they had to accept them, however they didn't want to bother other guests. They actually went to other guests and asked them if they were ok with service dogs sitting close by. Excuse me? This is so against the law! Their meat was ok but nothing more, the server was pleasant (after the initial SD experience), but it seems a bit costly to cook your own meat and for the quality of meat (we got filet mignon). Salad bar was very basic and not too near, nor was the grill area (grill also not hot enough). All in all, we have seen better. read more

If I could give zero stars I definitely would. A group of us made a reservation weeks prior for a buddy's bachelor party to be told the night of that they had nothing in their system. Either they're running Windows 7 or somebody never submitted our reservation. We were told the soonest they would be able to get us in would be 8:30 that night when the mistake was on them from the beginning. Poor customer service and administration. Awe man... so disappointed with this place. I loved the concept and ratings and even recommendations of this place, but it let me down. Aside from our server being super late on everything, forgetting our side orders, and being SUPER SUPER slow... it's pretty much serve yourself here anyways. The quality of the meat available at the "shop" is mediocre and you take it to the grill and cook it yourself. It looks like they never clean the grill... so it ends up everything tastes the same afterwards anyways. It also looks like they don't clean the sauces or brushes that people share. I think if they cleaned the place more, offered better quality meats, and cleaned the grill it would be a better place. It's also overpriced for the quality of meat they give you... and the sides weren't so appetizing. This place is great. The service was strong and it was busy. It is a cool your own steak place with salad bar and texas roast included. Sides are extra and I would recommend the fries. Tom and his wife (owners) are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. We called ahead over Christmas break while visiting the area and Tom put us on the "call ahead" list. I always visit The Mint when I am in Colorado. I have nothing but fond memories of Colorado, the mountains, and dinners at The Mint. At The Mint, you order your meat at the counter and cook at the communal grill in the middle of the restaurant. It is definitely a unique restaurant and memorable experience. They also a very popular salad bar. The prices at The Mint are comparable to other steak houses. They also offer fish and vegetable options. I like to order the prime rib which is already cooked and comes with au jus and horseradish sauce. They also offer sides with your meal and I highly recommend the baked potato. Dinner here was a highlight of our trip. We read some reviews and thought, hmm .. want to go to a "cook your own steak place?" What? Lol. We definitely did not have any expectations coming to this place but we wanted to try something different and it made for a fun night. Brendan was a great server and while it was BUSY due to a birthday AND bachelor party, and the restaurant being understaffed, we still appreciated his attentiveness and all of the staff being patient with our questions. The butcher was almost cleaned out but we also got there at 8: 30pm - I had a petite NY strip and Shaun had the rib-eye. Cuts were fine and the steaks were tasty. Drinks are strong and reasonably priced. The salad bar was included but sides like baked potatoes, asparagus, were separately priced. We enjoyed the night and it was fun to cook our own meal-they have cooking guidelines issued by the health department but use those instructions as guidelines, you definitely do not want to overcook your steak. You can always cut into it and bring it back to be grilled if it's too raw. Also remember to rest your steak before eating for an optimal experience. We had fun. We heard this place was good from our friend who lives there. First of all, the prices for the raw steaks are outrageous. $28 for an uncooked filet mignon!? The guy (who was nice, as everyone else was great too) said their cuts are better grade than at markets. Okay, I grew up the son of a butcher and we owned our store and I learned my cuts of steaks at an early age and, I'm telling you, this cut was fatty for a filet mignon. I hit a couple spots of fat, which shouldn't ever happen in a filet mignon, especially a $28 on that you have to cook yourself. So here's the other thing, this place has all of the 'fun' of a local dive place... except the prices. There's no friggin' way you should pay $28 to stand there cooking your own steak. It should be more like $15-$20 MAX. The problem comes at the pricepoint. I do like the idea of community and stranding around cooking it, talking to your neighbors, etc... but for a 'little' more, you can go to a really nice sitdown steakhouse with white table clothes, relaxing while someone cooks for you and you don't smell like fire, etc. This is just way too much for a 'divey' experience, I'm sorry. read more

Great place in Silverthorne and a perfect stop on the I-70. Welcoming staff walked us through the entire process and assisted us with selecting our meat based on what we like and then giving us suggestions for grilling. It was fun chatting with all the other grillers as we joked about our taste for meat (bloody to shoe leather). Like a dive bar and a steakhouse had a one night stand and this is their child. It's a cook-your-own steak setup where you pick up the meat at the front counter and grill it to your liking. Do not, I repeat DO NOT pay attention to the sign next to the grill with cooking times for the different cuts. The sign suggested 7-8 min PER SIDE for medium rare on a 12 oz cut. I grilled mine 3 min per side and got a perfect med rare temperature. Following the sign would have ruined your cut. The aged NY strip was chewy. My friend who got the Cajun steak described it as marginal and seasoned by "someone who heard Cajun described once". Salad bar was your basic buffet-style salad bar, but was kind of dirty. Butter from the giant crock was flung out all over the counter leaving a giant mess. Our service was nice, which helped give this place three stars. Overall, marginal place. read more

An old fashioned twist on the basic concept of a steakhouse is what The Historic Mint is. A purportedly very old establishment that certainly looks like it was a bar at first, and a restaurant later, it moves toward answering the question "why do you have to go out just to eat a steak?" Steak is an interesting thing, you can buy it at any grocery store (and would be hard pressed to spend more than $15 a person) but yet we still pay upwards of $40 for what is essentially a bare piece of meat (just like the one at the store), but cooked for us and served by someone. The Historic Mint aims to capture the market between those two markers..it is a steakhouse where they provide the meat, but you cook it. The cost of your hunk of meat (which is not cheap, ranging from $22 for a strip to $39 for a dry-aged bone-in t-bone) includes an unlimited salad bar, and 'Texas toast' (which is basically just thick sliced white bread). Sides, drinks, appetizers, and dessert is extra (usually $5-10). So for about 20% less than a cost of a typical steak at a steak house, you can get one here, but the catch is that you have to cook it yourself. And there in lies the 'unique' experience the Mint flaunts. You get to cook your own steak! For all the men in the place, each believing themselves to be the king of cooking meat over an open fire (sorry ladies, we are convinced that we are experts, no matter how bad we actually are, based on the lame idea that we've been doing it for 40,000 some odd years, and should have learned how to do it by now), you get a wealth of 'this is how you cook dead animal' insight. The plus here is that you get to cook your steak however you want it. The minus, of course, is that you're probably no expert and that expensive blacked dead cow is your own fault. I felt that it was overall a pretty fun experience. As a guy, I love cooking meat, and of course believe that I am good at it (see above explanation), so this offered me an opportunity to cook some really quality meat to my liking. I picked up two piece of meat for my three person party, a dry-aged bone in t-bone (mostly because dry aged steak is hard to come by, usually very expensive, and very flavorful) and a NY strip (as a 'baseline' of sorts since it is such a ubiquitous cut). Both steaks were delicious and and I was happy with how I cooked them, but I did have some gripes. For one, the open fire grill that was offered for cooking was way too cool (around 300 C, about 200 C too cool) and space was a premium. You also had to make sure you remembered which meat was yours, since the grill quickly crowded with other diners' steaks. For another, we ordered some sides, which were supposed to come out 'when our steaks were done' but instead came out when we were done with out steaks. Close, but a little late. Overall, it was a decent experience, but a little expensive at times (although compare it to a luxury meat market, like Lobels, http://lobels.com/, and it comes out on the cheaper side). Definitely worth checking out if you are the type of person who likes to be involved in their dining experience, but doesn't want to clean up afterward. read more

We have watched this place go steadily downhill for 20 years. I will not be back Just about everything related to the service was awful. 1) When we arrived, the hostess seemed like she had no idea what she was doing. We ended up waiting an hour for a table, when 80% of the restaurant was empty. She kept coming over to us and asking what our names were. 2) When we finally got seated they tried to sit us at a table with a group of college kids. When I told her we wanted our own table because my wife and I (in our 30's) were on a date, she said, she had to check and see what she could do. There were at least 5 empty two-tops there. There was no reason it should have been a problem. 3) Our server definitely did not want to be working. She came over, and was very short with us, when she asked if we were getting apps. When we said no, she became visible aggravated and walked away. Later she came back and took our drink orders. 4) My wife ordered water, but the server said that she wasn't allowed to just get water without getting a cocktail too. 5) We went to the butcher stand to get our dinner, and this guy also looked unhappy to be there. He greeted us with, "What do you want?" like we were bothering him. 6) We also asked if we could have salad, and he mumbled, "I don't have clean plates. Do you want me to get some out of the back?" as if getting us plates was a huge inconvenience for him. 7) The last straw was when I was standing at the top of the stairs in line for the salad bar. The hostess (the same from before) pushed me out of the way as she was running up the stairs on her way to front. She didn't even apologize for nearly knocking me down the stairs. 8) Lastly, I have been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years, but I have seen a continuous decline in service in the last few years. This last visit was so bad, I do not ever plan on returning. For $the 40 a plate that The Mint charges, you could go to a restaurant with better service that won't require you to cook your own food. read more

Ten of us went to the Mint two weekends ago. We were exhausted after a long serious day of skiing and VERY hungry. The waitress came to our table and told us how the restaurant worked. Apparently, there were only two things that they would actually cook for you. The Prime Rib, which was over $30, excluding sides. There was a fish as well, but that was also pricey. I was exhausted and really took issue with the fact that I had to PAY over $25 for a steak with no sides and cook it myself and bring it back to my table. If I wanted to make my own dinner, I would have taken my buffalo tenderloins from my fridge and put them on the grill at the condo. The cost: $5.50, NOT $25.00!! We choose to get ourselves salads from the salad bar, which consisted of iceberg lettuce, some passable dressings, about six different veggies (cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.) and white bread. Now you can get a salad bar at Whole Food for $5.99 a pound and I consider this pricey, but at least it's HIGH QUALITY. This salad was $7.00!! And the quality was a 1 out of 5. I was starving, so we tried to order appetizers, which we heard were cooked for us (like a normal restaurant). They ranged for $10 - $12. (The waitress told us they were half that, thank god, we had her check exact prices.) We passed. I ordered a baked potato with sour cream for $4.25 (and I didn't have to cook it.) I wound up sharing it with my boyfriend, since the waitress ignored him when he wanted to order his own. The coup de grace was when the waitress presented a bill with 18% GRATUITY INCLUDING THE MEALS THAT WE GOT OURSELVES!!! I have no issue playing for quality. I frequently eat out at restaurants like Vita, Kevin Taylor, etc. But I won't pay those same prices for LOW quality. Take a pass on the Mint!! read more

I was visiting with my husband in Dillon, CO (west of Denver just over an hour on I-70). What a fun place! You can order steaks, kebobs or chicken to cook over a communal grill with other customers. It's fun and social. Some folks were not very good cooks, so watch your food well. A plaque on the wall tells you how long to cook each cut, and a clock is nearby for reference. They also have a nice little salad bar, all you can eat. We loved our entrees, both quality cuts (and did a fine job cooking it, thank you--took longer for the kebob than the prescribed time). The atmosphere is cute because it's an old, historic building. The original Mint was, I think, built in the town of Old Dillon. But it had to move when the entire town was destroyed to make a reservoir on that exact spot in the early 1900s. We walked out of there very full. It is a very popular place! read more
