Located in the heart of downtown Breckenridge is this underground restaurant. It's located in the basement space of the Carlin, and is perfect for a quick appetizer apres or even a meal. I highly recommend reservations. However, my group of four was lucky to get a table around 5:30 just walking in. We opted for cocktails and a few appetizers as we planned to have dinner elsewhere. Two people in my group ordered some quirky cocktails that the bartender knew how to make which was a plus. Unfortunately, one of the drinks came out very incorrect and we had to request a remake. Luckily, the staff was quick at remedying the situation. Another downside was the appetizers came out before our drinks did which took a bit of time. For appetizers, we got fries and the buffalo chicken dip which was OK but nothing special. While in Breckenridge, our group made reservations at Tavern Underground as we had heard they have amazing craft cocktails and assumed they would have good food as well. When our party of 6 arrived, we ordered 1 Pear Necessity, 2 Dirty Martinis and 3 Espresso Martinis. Unfortunately these drink never came and when we inquired 10-15 min later, we were told our drink ticket had been thrown away and drinks would come soon. Then, only some drinks ended up coming and I have to admit... all but 1 was pretty awful. The pear necessity was great but this was probably the worst dirty martini most of us had ever tried. We the went on to food. Our table ordered the fish tacos, burger, ramen, ceviche, oysters, chicken sandwich. The burger was pretty good but most other items were not very good. We had two birthdays at the table and were offered free desert (a kind gesture) but everything had already been so bad we decided to pass on it. We ordered the salmon and the crispy chicken sandwich. The salmon was well prepared, and I appreciated that they asked how I wanted it cooked. It was paired with roasted carrots, which were a standout and complemented the dish nicely. Stopped in for a pre-dinner drink and app and had a nice experience. We were expecting a bit of a speakeasy vibe, but this felt more like an extension of the restaurant above. Everything we had was good, but for the price I would say not really, which is why I knocked off a star. My glass of Cab was $18 - about the average price of wine on the menu. My husband had the Old Fashioned and a Manhattan (both with Rye) and said they were some of the better-made cocktails he's had, but at the cost of $20 each not really worth it. We shared the biscuits and they were pretty good, but a little hard and didn't a ton of flavor I was expecting from the cheese. Service was excellent. After seeing their May 1/2 off dining and happy hour specials, we made a reservation here on a Monday. We even showed up a little early to take advantage of the half-off drink specials. I tried two different cocktails: the Duck You and the American Idiot. Both were delicious. My wife enjoyed two different beers. I also had a glass of cab with my entree. We split three of the happy hour-priced appetizers: buttermilk Gruyère biscuits, jalapeño hush puppies, and the oven roasted olives. The biscuits were fine, but the other two were delicious. The hush puppies were the best. My wife went with the short rib entree, and after we saw another come out, I did as well. It was huge, and even though I'm not usually big on short rib, I thought the beef and accompaniments were fantastic. Great meal start to finish, and the specials made it even better. My new favorite spot in Breck! Our group got in to town late for the weekend we had dogs with us, it was freezing, and we were stuck trying to find dinner. Great spot for HH. Came on Tuesday after a long hike in the mountains and this place hit the spot! HH is from 4-5 with live music outside from 4:30-6:30 every Tuesday. So did not have a great experience at Tavern Underground. We were sat at the bar and enjoying a cocktail when the light fixture fell off the wall onto me. Turns out it wasn't installed properly and was being held in place with duct tape. It makes me wonder if that's the state of the dining room I'm pretty sure I don't want to see what's not out in the open. The food was just average. We ordered the lobster bisque which was our own fault the bartender tried to warn us it wasn't good and well it wasn't to our taste, as it's some kind of red base and very "fishy" tasting. We also had the ricotta gnocchi with chorizo and clams which was good. All in all it was a pleasant dinner the staff is great the best part of the experience in fact but as homeowners we probably won't be back, the competition for our dining dollars in Breck is stiff. read more

Pros and cons. Pros and cons. Getting there was interesting ... there's a direct entrance at the foot of the stairs if you walk past The Carlin ... or you can walk up the stairs into The Carlin and take a back elevator down to the tavern. We'd made reservations and were seated promptly - which is great. Our server was incredibly friendly ... but overall the service had several misses. We ordered two orders of dynamite shrimp but only got one (ended up having to ask twice more, once a different server (manager?)), drinks were prompt though ... but the mains took what seemed like forever. We were there a long time. The drinks were QUITE good. We tried a variety of their cocktails and each was met with rave reviews. The food was variable based on table commentary. Would definitely recommend the dynamite shrimp -- they were extremely tasty battered shrimpy delights. The nachos, on the other hand, I'd probably not order again. They were surprisingly good for being so lightly dusted with toppings ... but after a day of skiing, this was a little too frou-frou for me. A brief note on the mains we ordered: Yaki-soba: seemed out of place on the menu, but felt very much at home in my belly. Steak frites: overcooked stake abed an over-blended and extra-vinegary chimichurri. 1/2 eaten, 1/2 left behind. Burger: quite tasty, quite big, and utterly disappeared. Fried Chicken Sandwich: also tasty & big, 1/2 of it went home. Fish tacos: edible, I guess. 1 eaten, 1 left behind. Cheesesteak: delicious and destroyed. Nom. When half a person's meal is abandoned I expect a place like this to ask if everything was okay. They didn't. And didn't seem to clue into the fact that we'd waited a long time or had to repeat ourselves. What we didn't have to do, though, was holler to hear each other. Despite a bar area that dominated the restaurant, we appeared to show up just as the aprés crowd was leaving. The place shifted a bit from tavern vibe to restaurant vibe as we got seated and we felt very comfortable in the mellow well-decorated space. Nothing went so awry that I'd refuse to be back, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to make sure I returned. May your experience be better. read more

Horrible service coming from a Bartender. I've been here a few times living in the county, they only care about tourists not locals. Last time we were in there the bartender gave us shit for ordering lemon drop martinis. Again I'm a bartender, don't complain about your job when we're the only table in there. The bartender told me I should hydrate and drink water.(fyi. i have lived in Breckenridge and worked behind the bar here for 20 years) and many other states before that. I have been a bartender since 1993, I have worked in multiple types of places in NYC, Montauk, Miami, hilly Billy Upstate NY towns, Denver, And a few place right here At home in Breckenridge, Co. The bartender we had was all about himself, he gave no shit about the customers at the bar. One lady wasn't happy with her drink, your reply was "well everyone else loves it." She asked for something to change the drink. And your reply, "well I don't do that." Aurum, , Underground, and all of the places you all own in breck, steamboat, aspen, should be embarrassed by that kind of shitty, Selfish service. You would have had a better tip if you were nice to the group. But you don't give a shit because you expect a tip. Do you even understand what "Tips" stands for? A good bartender earns a tip. While visiting Breck with my buddies a last month, we stumbled across the Tavern Underground....As the local in the group, I had seen it through its evolution over the past summer and waited in anticipation for its completion....And the wait was well worth it! Although we didn't eat anything, the Vibe was really cool and the Bartenders excellent. Great staff and great food. We found this by accident after we had dined upstairs at the Carlin. After a great meal, Grayson invited us down for a nightcap and nice been back about 8 times since then Hahaha... My favorites here are the Dynamite Shrimp. They are perfect for sharing before dinner. Not too spicy. Hit and fresh. The burger and the cheesesteak are both hugs and full of flavor but my favorite is the Fried Chicken sandwich. I love this thing Hit fresh chicken with a slaw that is fresh and flavorful, I usually ask for more of the hot sauce as I like spicy. Come with your choice of flavored fries too. read more

This was definitely a one and done experience for us. They've been open about two months, so we waited a bit so that a few kinks could be worked out, but sadly, it is still a miss. The first three beers I ordered they were out of, which was surprising considering that there are only a few beers on the menu at all. Another member of our party ordered a mock tail and they were out of the items to make the drink as well. The drink menu was specifically surprising as the cheapest glass of wine is $18, which even for Summit County, is incredibly expensive. We got the Buffalo chicken dip, which was very good - the only highlight. We also ordered the dynamite shrimp and the Mac and cheese with crab. The dynamite shrimp had been fried with the shell on the shrimp still, so we had to physically pick off the tempura and then the shell to even eat one piece. We did not even try to eat the other two pieces on the plate. The Mac and cheese was very bland, but the crab was served with shell pieces as well where we were physically eating the shell. Very very bad experience with those two dishes. Our server was attentive, but sadly we will not be back to this place again as our bill was $111 for horrible food and severely overpriced drinks. We ate here a week ago. The food is good not excellent. We ordered burger, shrimp with ramen noodles and crispy pork belly. Drink orders were late to the table. The bill was confusing. The prices did not match the prices on the menu! Even the discount didn't match the price! They seemed double what was listed on the menu and at the end they total really high prices and then they subtract some bogus happy hour discount from the total bill. No one explains to you the strategy of pricing and billing! We felt they're not genuine about how they're charging you! there needs to be an explanation of how and what you will see on your bill. We needed to get our server to explain what's going on with the bill. The menu gives you the impression that there's a discount on top of what we see on the menu and it's actually not the case! We've been in the summit county for many years and this is something new we've seen. It smells like a tax right off scam. I would say it's all overpriced for what you get.
