We had a party of four scrambling to find a place to eat since COVID. Thankfully the Historic Mint had an opening due to a cancellation. This was a totally unexpected surprise. Yes, you do have to cook your own steak! You pick your cut, and they provide all of the condiments and estimated times to cook. The owner stopped by and she was super helpful giving us a ton of grilling recommendations. We named her "The Grill Queen." Our served was Big Tuna had a good sense of humor and sarcasm. We even didn't believe him when he said we had to cook our own meat! Really liked the concept of cooking your own meat. That way it is exactly how you want it. Our server was so amazing and attentive!! This place was awesome in general, but he was definitely the best part in terms of quality. The meat was amazing as well, although a bit pricy, and cooking it yourself can be a catch 22 - it's fun, but do you really want to? We were a bit nervous about the sanitary element of everything but we were informed that since it was red meat, everything was FDA approved as safe and healthy. They did mention they had a different process for chicken, but we didn't get their chicken so I'm not sure what that process is. The toast and salad was amazing as well, especially for being apart of the price of your entree. We tried two sides, the truffle fries and the twice baked potatoes. The twice baked potatoes were good, but the truffle fries were amazing. Our table devoured them quickly. We also tried two drinks, the stoli strawberry lemonade and the stoli vanilla White Russian. They were both really good, but the White Russian was a bit stronger. If I had to name a biggest complaint it would be that the menu is a bit confusing as it doesn't list the price of most things but our waiter explained everything to us when we asked. Overall a great experience, good food, and great service. But if you're feeling cheap and would rather cook at home, you won't miss out on too much. read more

Pretty expensive for a mediocre steak I have to cook myself. Once the novelty wears off, you wonder why you'd pay for something you can do at home. Service was good either way attentive staff. Ambiance is pretty outdated but I guess it' accomplishes the old timey saloon atmosphere. I do love this historic steakhouse. This time I only had one walk of shame back to the grill. They've taken quite a few Covid precautions which is good. I would love it if you could pay extra and have a chef cook your steak correctly. I'm just so bad at it. That's OK it's a really fantastic bargain right now with the $20 fillet. Patrons BEWARE: A friend of ours recommended we eat here on our trip. We looked online and thought it looked interesting and decided to give it a try! The website said "Reservations Only" (see pic below) so we called 7 days ahead and asked for "a reservation" at 6:30 with no questions asked other than name/phone#. We arrived on time and could see our name on the list, only to be told there were no "reservations", only "call ahead" and that-despite our phone call a week earlier-our party of 6 would have a 30-40min wait as the others who had already-arrived (including walk-ins) would be seated first. Frustrated, but, OK no problem, so we sat at the bar-height table at the entrance-and waited. Party after party was seated before us, but after waiting for an hour, a group of eight arrived and were promptly seated 10 minutes later --AHEAD of us. The hostess replied-there was a table of 8 available, but not a table of 6....what? 6 can't sit at an 8-top?? Only after raising a stink were we finally seated. We were not alone in our frustration--Others who arrived after us were equally confused how a "reservation" or "call ahead" just put you in a first-come-first serve queue. Why have the process at all? The bartender was fun. The meat selection was good. The salad bar and sides only so-so. And of course, you cook your own meat. In my opinion the value of this restaurant is the "experience"which we were very excited about! Unfortunately, the experience was tainted by a very poor (and rude) hostess, an unclear reservation/call ahead policy, and a lot of effort in preparing my own food after a very long wait. Unfortunately, it was our impression the waitress was passively-aggressive and not seating us purposefully (or just REALLY BAD at her job). Next time, I'll forgo "the experience" and spend an equal amount of money for good customer service and professional food prep--elsewhere. Edited to add: I am grateful to the owner's response. Cooking our own meat was exactly why we chose to eat at The Mint! But we also expect basic customer service! Hopefully, this being addressed with the hostess will prevent other patrons from the same service! When was the last time you visited The Mint? For us, it was way too long. What a fun night!!! The food was great -- the service good -- and the ambiance super fun. A lot of positive energy from the other guests as we laughed and joked while grilling our steaks together. I think we always thought of the Mint as expensive. Compared to the other restaurants around Dillon, SilverThorne and Frisco, it's about the same. Especially when you factor in the all-you-can-eat salad bar and Texas toast! For an extra good time, look for Jason at the bar. He's a great story teller and will share the history of the Mint. He even told us about some of the art on the walls. It made our visit even more fun and memorable. Plus, as a native, he's a great source of information on what to do around Summit County. After a long week at work and having altitude sickness a few days prior, along with a a ton of anxiety after a stressful day at work.... All anxiety and stress went away the moment we walked in. The staff is incredible, they had my favorite music playing (The Wood Brothers) and our server Ashley might have been the most personable and cheerful server I've had in a long time. This was a cool spot to enjoy. The style of dinner was neat because we were able to enjoy cooking steaks. I would say that the menu was pretty small as far as sides go though. And the salad bar was very basic. It may have been normal here, but it seemed like last time we ate at a place like this, the people around the grill were more friendly. The lay out of this place was unique and the parking was surprisingly easy. I would go here again. We drove from Parker to check this place out. We came for a birthday, and got a free birthday beer! My dad said "way better than cake". Haha. We did make reservations and glad we did as they open at 5pm and so fill up really fast for dinnertime. It was hoping when we left at 6pm. The service is very friendly! Exactly what you want to see in a mountain place like this. :-) They had a few jokes they reused, but even on the fly they were clever and always smiling. It is ONE community grill! It's not hibachi style, so you order a steak from the counter, take your plate to the grill, and then to your table. We were there early in the evening, during the holidays, so we had the grill almost to ourselves, but it quickly got busy. It sounds like they do a good job of reservations though with large groups. The steaks are expensive and big. I had enough to take home, but the boys ate their whoooooole thing! Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a Summit County go-to for visitors. So what? It's still a good experience and I wouldn't call it a tourist trap. I've been coming here on and off since the 1980s. With the right company, it's a fun time. If you know how to prep and cook a steak, then you are in for a treat. Time spent around the grill talking with other guests can lead to (at a minimum) an update as to conditions at the nearby mountains or even sharing stories and making new friends. You can be creative not only with how you prep and cook your steak, but also with making your own salads, sauteing vegetables, and making Texas toast. Do not go if you want someone else to cook your steak. Do not go if you want to be waited on hand and foot (your server will bring your drink orders and then deliver your sides when you are finished grilling). And no, I'm no gaper. What a fun place! We went with a group of friends traveling from NJ & Brooklyn when we stumbled across this restaurant. No frills by the looks on the outside and inside yet the steak cuts tasted excellent. Our meal started out with the salad bar complete with toppings. Once finished we went to the "butcher stand" for our choices of steaks. I had the filet mignon, others had the NY Strip. The grill fIt 10-12 people cooking. Our steaks came out perfect. My only suggestion would be check tips on cooking the perfect steak. There's no chef at the station to help. read more

We went here for the "cook-your-own-steak" experience-- Amazing this place has survived in between all the new hotels etc around it. The place is what you would expect from one of the oldest bars in Colorado. What was disappointing were the filets! We cooked them medium rare and they were so tough! Either they were not really filets or just a really bad cut of meat. So tough we only at half of them. The salad bar and sides were good but hope the other choices of steak are better. read more

Our hotel recommended The Mint, and the concept seemed fun, so my friend and I thought we'd give it a try. While I appreciate that most restaurants are understaffed. The Mint is understaffed to the point that they apologize for everything from the moment you walk end until the time you leave. The wait for a table can only be described as comedic. When we arrived, were told that we were next to be seated, so the wait should be no more than 10 min tops. However, after seeing 3 other parties of 2 seated before us and 30 min passing, I approached the host who apologized profusely, insisting that once again we would absolutely be seated next. At the hour point (upon reflection, I should have already left by then) I asked the host whether we were actually going to be seated at some point or if we should just go somewhere else. They again apologized profusely, however, this time I opted to just stand at the host station until they seated my friend and I, which took another 15 min. Unfortunately, we weren't the only ones who got leapfrogged by the host's poor process - so we were surrounded by other patrons who had similar experiences. Our server was pleasant enough and honestly attempted to make up for the restaurant's many shortcomings, however he too was simply unable to keep up. I asked for a clean fork, but it never came so I had to acquire one from another table. I asked for a refill of my ice tea, and although he took my glass, he never brought me another despite me asking again. The grill area should have been fun, but instead it was filthy and probably worthy of a formal complaint to the health department. The same could be said of their salad bar - it's hard to mess up a basic salad bar, but it was such a mess with a majority of the salad plates not even clean that the woman in front of me wouldn't let her kids use it, which was alarming to the rest of us who were in line - so we all opted to pass. At the end of our meal, the waiter seemed surprised that we weren't interested in desert, so I relented and asked him how long he thought desert would take, but his response was "there's no good way to know". We cut our dinner short simply to make the experience end and on our way out of the restaurant saw the host seated at the bar slamming cocktails. He clearly had a rough night, but come on. Maybe our experience was just a one off, but they all seemed a little too practiced at offering empty apologies for their shortcomings, so my gut said it was more likely their current norm. I've seen lots of other very complimentary reviews for this place. so hopefully they can get back on top of things, but if you get there and your experience starts to feel chaotic- do yourself a favor and take it as a sign. read more
