The 'Holy Donut' feels like a 'must try' for foodies who live in, or visit, Maine. Famous for their potato donuts, the quality is absolutely reliable and excellent. They clearly use excellent ingredients, that really help prevent overly saccharine donuts. Their seasonal varieties provide a good number of new flavors to try. That said, their sweet donuts overshadow what I would argue is their best donut: the savory bacon cheddar! Their description of "ooey, gooey, cheesey and delicious" is spot on for this one. I also generally recommend the maple bacon, triple C (caramel, coconut, and chocolate), and trying one of the fruity holy canoli. While all locations are clean, very friendly, and professional, I especially recommend the Scarborough location. The drive-through and reduced foot-traffic (compared to the Portland locations) can make it faster to drive there on a busy day than wait in the Portland lines! Scarborough also has good parking, WiFi, and a comfortable place to sit. I get the feeling that this business treats their employees well and cares about things like local ingredients. read more

We went here to get a few(ha) donuts to do a tasting this morning, we left with a dozen different flavors and a bacon cheddar fried donut!! I also got an iced vanilla latte - thoroughly enjoyed the latte! Four adults and a toddler sampled a bunch of donuts - sounds like the start of a terrible joke...These are my notes on all of the donuts and not a consensus from the group, in no particular order. Woopie pie: 4 stars - good flavor and texture, nice way to begin this sampling experience. Margarita: 3 stars - definitely taste the salt and lime, little bit of tequila as well; glad I experienced this, not something I'll go back for. What the heck is a potato donut? That may be a question you ask, I certainly did. Well it's the opposite of airy and light, with some big heaviness to the donut. Imagine any donut you've had and picture it being twice as dense and still a bit airy, but soft, but not really, but kinda, soft and crunchy, but sort of crispy on the edges. At the same time... I saw that the holy donut on my way home from Portland and Bar Harbor. My friend had been hearing all about it and really wanted to make the trip while she was visiting from New Jersey. I got three donuts and they all were incredible. There was not a long wait at all, even though we went later in the day, so there were not as many donuts left to choose from. Parking was really easy, and the staff was very nice. Stopped by this drive thru location of the holy donut on the way to Portland Maine for a day trip. This location was amazing and there was a ton of seating indoors and outdoors and very cozy. The locations offers a drive thru for those in a hurry or dine in for those who want to relax. My friends and I got half a dozen and split it. We ended up getting the blueberry glazed, blueberry lemon, fresh lemon, and chocolate donuts and they were all delicious. The potato base of the donuts definitely is unique but the donuts taste amazing and you wouldn't know if nobody told you! Over the past decade, Holy Donut has changed A LOT. Since reaching international fame and being sold by the original owner/creator, I don't think their donuts are as good as they used to be. They're greasier, weaker in flavor, more stodgy, and more streamlined for efficiency. I get it, they have to be to produce the quantity they need to (especially now that they ship coast to coast). That being said, I now think this is THE BEST of the current locations: 1. There's plenty of parking in their dedicated lot! 2. There's a drive-thru! 3. You can order online ahead of time, and your order will be waiting for you in the cubicles to the left of the counter! 4. There's loads of seating options (large officelike chairs, big couches, high tops, low tables)! 5. It's super clean inside! 6. They have bathrooms (that are also super clean)! 7. The staff is THE FRIENDLIEST AND MOST WELCOMING (and most engaging, and most patient) of any other HDs! 8. If you can plan your visit midweek, midday, you'll still have plenty of donut options to choose from with almost zero wait/queue (this is at least true in non-summer months)! Vegan? No problem (although, note, all donuts are fried in the same oil). Try the lemon or maple, I think they're the best ones (although, it *is* just a basic plain donut topped with flavored frosting; gone are the days of flavoring and fillings IN the actual dough). Gluten-Free? No problem. The dark chocolate sea salt is the best donut HD makes. That includes any and everything they make. So, even if you're not GF, get this one. Holy Donut is another place that my friend who I visited and I have talked about coming to for years now! I am something of a donut addict and I was super excited to come here and try these, because my friend absolutely raves about them! He was not kidding they are absolutely fabulous! Some the best I've had! Nationwide! Light and fluffy but just sturdy enough to hold up with my coffee! Perfect consistency for me! The flavors are unreal and they have something for everybody. Seasonal ones too! We tried a variety of flavors from something fruity with the Triple Berry, to something sweet and savory with our maple bacon. I also had to try the apple crumb which was absolutely amazing! I recommend trying that while they have it. Chocolate sea salt was incredible too! Like I said everything I tried was delicious! This is my friend's favorite donut shop so she wanted to make a stop here and pick up a box before we headed back from our day trip. We each got three and I went with a vanilla glazed cannoli, dark chocolate coconut and maple. I was about to leave Maine without trying a donut from The Holy Donut but am so happy I decided to stop by last minute before heading home. If you don't like waiting to order, I recommend doing an online pickup order but make sure you get your orders in early in the morning so flavors don't run out! Omgosh, I'm so blessed that I get to eat Holy Donuts not once, which I was totally happy about, but twice and I went to a different location. Donuts are made from scratch from real Maine potatoes. So I did learn something. They are not naturally gluten free. They do use a mix of flour with their donuts, but they do offer gluten free in selected flavors. When we came today, it was later in the day and they were already sold out of the gluten free donuts. But I'm not gluten free, so I picked 4 of my favs, to eat tonight for dessert. Breakfast tomorrow, and the plane ride back home to Austin. Hopefully I have some left for Wednesday morning when I go back to work. Service was outstanding. I had asked about the shipping. It was a must when in Maine and it was the first on the list to visit since they're known for gourmet donuts made of potatoes. I went to the central location before I ended up at this location. Due to severe weather, all locations in town were closed. Thankfully, this location was open and I got there before it closed. While I didn't get there early for the full selection of flavors, I was able to grab one of the seasonal flavors that were left. I knew more than one would fill me up since there were other foods in Maine to try but I was already here. I got the seasonal honey lavender and a cannoli one. The donuts are good, they have a slight crunch on the outside and are soft and moist on the inside. Got a maple flavored and a lemon, which generously included a long dark hair in the first bite, embedded in the icing that we had to pull out which still had some icing on it that you can see in the photo. My husband and I went to the holy donut this morning for breakfast. I did go once before with friends, but he's never experienced them in Maine. It was a nice store and large and clean. It was nice and cool with AC so could have hot coffee without any problems. My husband ordered the toasted coconut donut and I ordered the blueberry. We shared the fresh lemon my husband fully enjoyed the coconut and said it was really good. I really like the blueberry one. I like the lemon as well but I was very into the blueberry.
