No way these are famous... The site says "mouthwatering Maine potato donuts" but my donut was dry, dense, and stale. Portland, are you ok?

Holy Donut is a very popular donut shoppe in Portland, ME. They have a following and run out of the favorite flavors quickly. All the ingredients are locally sourced and they have a huge variety. The donuts are not like any other donuts as they use potato flour. I think that's what draws you to get them. These donuts are a bit heavier and denser than regular donuts. The cake donuts I had seemed to have a hearty chew to them as well. Flavors are unique like margarita , key lime pie and honey lavender. If you're in Portland and a donut enthusiast, then you really should stop by. Original taste and unique like no other!

Donuts are delicious here. They have multiple flavors, give each one a try if you've got the room for it! Service is fast and friendly, very kind. Holy Donut has such a cute seating area inside, it's bubbly and blue. Fun little stop on your Portland trip!

I love the donuts here. They are so flavorful. A must while in Portland, the blueberry one is my fave.

Absolutely loved the gluten free donut options here! I've never had any this good! The store is so cute and there's a line outside down the sidewalk (that's how popular it is). But the girls that are working there handle the pressure with such grace, it's amazing. The line moves fast and everyone is happy leaving w their yummy donuts!

Line moved quickly on a holiday weekend Sunday morning so it didn't take long to get our donuts. We really liked the seasonal blueberry lemon donut. You could taste the flavors and it was so much more substantial than a typical donut (i.e. Dunkin). Classic dark chocolate sea salt had a nice flavor but it tasted much more of potato than the other donut did so we didn't like it as much. Overall definitely a must try whenever you're in Portland.

We decided to try -The Holy Donut- after seeing numerous videos on "What To Do in Portland, ME." Everyone was raving about this place, so it must be good....So we hoped. The flavor that we heard so much about, (blueberry lemon), was not available. So we got the Lemon Glazed. It was awful. Crumbly, and a bit stale. We couldn't finish it. It was that bad. We ended up throwing it away. Maybe Monday afternoon is not the best time to go, and maybe they sold out of all the fresh donuts, or maybe this place isn't that great. There was an army of people in the back, working their asses off, but I'm not sure for what. GOLDBELLY perhaps ?!?! The people working there were nice, and they did have a public restroom. That's what the one star is for

The Holy Donut is a VERY popular tourist spot! They've got 3 other locations (all in Maine) & I believe this is their first location. What makes their donuts unique is, they're made with POTATOES. That's pretty cool. I'm not sure exactly how they do it, but you can definitely taste the difference from regular donuts. I personally found these donuts to taste just okay. I wasn't a big fan of the texture & the rather dense consistency. What I did like about the Holy Donut is how they have a nice variety of different "flavored" donuts BUT I would say, if you're looking for a flavorful donut, this wouldn't be the place to go.

We tried Holy Donut in Scarborough but it was the end of the day and they didn't have many choices left. We came to this one to try another flavor, and were sorely disappointed. The donuts were $5 each, flavorless, dry, and inedible. I love donuts so for me to through an uneaten one that I had paid $5 for, tells you how bad it was. We bought the salted dark chocolate and lemon blueberry. Both were overcooked, dry, and flavorless. They are better at the Scarborough location, but still not really worth the $5 tag.

A woman owned business is always a plus! Then throw in Potato Donuts and you've got a home run!! There's a reason there's lines out the door all summer long! Great service and great donuts!

I'm confused and disappointed. This place is RAVED about and it was THE DRYEST and worst donut I have ever had. We got the blueberry and vanilla and both were not good.

    Noanya S.

I should preface I'm not a donut lover unless it's a cake donut. My friend really wanted to try this place so luckily there was no line and we strolled in. We decided on the gooey bacon and cheese, tater tots and 4 donuts maple, blueberry lemon, sweet potato and something else I can't remember. The gooey bacon and cheese and tots were the show stoppers, we were not a fan of the donuts. They had a very dense consistency, with no flavor outside of whatever frosting or topping was on the donut. We did not finish them and would only return for non donut items ‍ Popular place that others seem to really love but the donuts were not donuting.

A potato donut? Sure, why not. The cherry glaze was delicious. The donut itself was decent, just not my favorite.

So, we decided to sneak over here after a busy morning at the lighthouse with our toddler for a nice, filling lunch before a later flight home. We must've gotten lucky on a Sunday bc our wait for three people was about 15-20 minutes quoted and we spent 10 minutes walking the block to entertain our toddler, came back to check-in and our table was ready! yay! We had a great table in the corner by the window which was excellent with our toddler. Our server, Brian, was wonderful and super friendly. Menu isn't huge but, has enough stuff that should be able to please most. We chose a small fry with the daily dip which was almost like a mayo-based honey mustard dijon and was delicious, with ketchup and vinegar for dipping. Fries were crispy and delicious. We got the green salad and the Cuban to split and loved both. The sandwich was delicious and the green salad was light and refreshing with some really yummy herbs on top to include fennel which isn't usually on a salad but I loved the taste for this one, worked perfectly with the dressing. My husband ordered their house-made cherry soda and let me tell you, best cherry soda of my life! We ordered two bc I drank about half of it. They have a charming outdoor patio area with about 3-4 other tables. Charming spot - def. recommend! Wait can get super long - by the time we left they were quoting over an hour for a table since it's smaller inside and large parties can take up almost all the spaces.

There was so much to select from - we got pastries, cookies, pizza and bread - and we pretty much liked everything. Our least favorite was the morning bun with walnuts - we didn't have it right away so that might've been part of the issue. Just note that the bread served at the restaurants aren't available until 2pm - we were leaving that morning so we weren't going wait for it. They clearly use excellent ingredients, that really help prevent overly saccharine donuts. Their seasonal varieties provide a good number of new flavors to try. That said, their sweet donuts overshadow what I would argue is their best donut: the savory bacon cheddar! Their description of "ooey, gooey, cheesey and delicious" is spot on for this one. I also generally recommend the maple bacon, triple C (caramel, coconut, and chocolate), and trying one of the fruity holy canoli. While all locations are clean, very friendly, and professional, I especially recommend the Scarborough location. The drive-through and reduced foot-traffic (compared to the Portland locations) can make it faster to drive there on a busy day than wait in the Portland lines! Woopie pie: 4 stars - good flavor and texture, nice way to begin this sampling experience. Bacon cheddar fried donut: 5 stars - delicious, amazing flavor, served hot, good distribution of fillings; would gladly have this again! Margarita: 3 stars - definitely taste the salt and lime, little bit of tequila as well; glad I experienced this, not something I'll go back for. Key lime holy cannoli: 5 stars - love the texture of the donut, light and fluffy, good lime flavor and enjoyed the cannoli cream. Creme brulee: 3 stars - good flavor, the crystallized chunks of sugar were a nice touch; I had high hopes, and it was alright but not life changing - that's on me. Maple: 3 stars - typical maple donut, not overwhelming with flavor but definitely knew it was maple. Maple bacon: 4 stars - lots of bacon, almost balanced by the maple. Blueberry lemon: 5 stars - really great lemon flavor to the glaze, blueberry flavor comes through the donut nicely; looking forward to having this again! Vanilla holy cannoli: 5 stars - again, love the texture of the donut, classic flavor with the cannoli cream; I would gladly eat a whole one of these! Chocolate sea salt: 3 stars - good chocolate flavor, didn't get much of the sea salt coming through. Pomegranate: 4 stars - very sweet, good amount of pomegranate flavor; could not eat a whole one as it would be too sweet for me. Honey lavender: 5 stars - mmm, honey and lavender partnered nicely, sweet but not obnoxiously so, loved how well the lavender flavor came through; I very much so enjoy botanicals in sweet treats and lattes. Toasted coconut: 5 stars - deliciously sweet coconut taste, nostalgic flavor of something my grandma use to make, I really enjoyed it! Such a fun way to bond with friends and spend a relaxing morning on vacation! Would gladly get donuts here again, and now that i know my favorites, I can be more intentional with my order next time
