You can't beat the many convenient locations of Home Depot throughout Southern California. As a working handyman with lots of clients, I visit Home Depot 7 to 10 times per week. Sadly, Home Depot has been going downhill for several years now. Product placement inside the stores was recently reorganized and in the process, the variety of inventory was greatly reduced. On the shelves where you used to see 4 boxes of incrementally different sizes of bolts, screws, pipes and so on, you now find 4 boxes of all the same average sized item. Example: I recently needed a 3/4"x3" plastic pipe nipple, HD only had 2" and 4". I had to talk a reluctant plumbing guy to cut and thread the 4" down to 3" on his metal pipe cutting machine! I'm sure it was a good business decision to stock the stores with only those items which had good turnover, but when you are looking for the exact length of screw to fix what's broken, it's frustrating to find that HD stocks it in 2" or 3" lengths but nothing in between. From what I've observed, Home Depot depends on-line ordering for all the low-turnover items. But some things are just silly: for instance I recently bought several boxes of QEP tile leveling clips which were carried in the store - but the tool that's required to tighten these clips had to be special ordered. That's like selling nails but requiring that hammers be special ordered. Another example: a few years ago you could buy door sills in several lengths from 32" to 46". Now they only stock 36". I will say this - most of the folks working plumbing, electrical and gardening really seem to know what they are doing and they usually have good advice about getting a job done correctly. The paint departments in Encinitas, Carlsbad and Vista have done great jobs in mixing paint to match the small samples I brought in. However, one paint department guy steered me completely wrong when I asked for recommendations about a non-blocking paint for a desktop, so do your homework. Expect some disorganization in the departments with bins of small loose hardware. If you must have a dozen 1/4" x 2 1/2 lag screws or 1/4-20 nuts, be sure to examine and match everything you pull out of that bin, you will probably find screws that are all sizes in there. And recently I was looking for nozzles and connectors for my power washer - that section was so totally mixed up that I eventually dumped 6 bins out on a nearby shelf and stirred through them to find what I needed. I left that pile of random parts on the shelf, hoping that some employee would get the hint and put the items back in the proper boxes. Frustrating for both me and the employee, I'm sure. Frankly, I find myself visiting Lowes, Ace, TrueValue, Ferguson's and Grangetto's more and more often. If I'm looking for something that's the slightest bit out of the ordinary, they are more likely to have it in stock than Home Depot. read more

I will give a zero if possible. Horrible service. I was looking for an item related to plumbing and asked a lady in the paint section . She rolled her eyes and said it has to be in the plumbing section. I walked through plumbing and didn't see it. I asked another employee who pointed to an aisle and said it might be there. No surprises .. it wasn't there either. After wandering for 20 mins I found towards the back of the store. I will never come back here again. read more

Do not special order locks Long story, won't bore you with details. Here is the synopsis Placed order, told locks would be in in 2 weeks Waited 3 weeks, told locks would be in next day Next day told locks would be 3 more weeks Waited 3 weeks Told locks would be in in two more months Called lock manufacturer Baldwin Found out HD sold me wrong lock for front door and an incompatible lock for side door and that delivery is always only 3 weeks. Home Depot had use of my money for 3 months while my contractor and I chased our tails. HD checked the locks for compatibility two different times in the process and assured us they would fit. read more

This location is not up to par with what I experience at a typical Home Depot. Seems like when people go on break, they don't have other's cover that department (happened to me on 3 separate occasion). One time had to get keys made, they had to call for a associate 5 times over the intercom...myself and 2 other costumers finally got service 17 minutes later (yes I actually timed it). On Another occasion took 3 calls on the intercom for me to get service...14 minutes later in the tool department. Obviously this location is poorly managed which is sad for a rich community. Even the ghetto community live, much better service with fairly high yelp reviews...so embarrassing. read more

I have never had a problem with them before i don't think ill come back to home depo again espically with a place that has employees who don't care or want to care about paying customers. Wow. I spent way to much time trying to purchase a refrigerator. No qualified personal to actually make the buying purchase a breeze. I should've just bought it online. Only star is for free delivery and install. There is no price cut for in store pick up. Spent $485 on a white entry level fridge buying time took over one hour I could've stayed longer but they where closing. Under staffed at late hours. Elderly and young staff alike can't grasp their ancient check out system. I dunno I'm totally put off by the services even when getting paint. I hate feeling like I'm rushing an employee who's paycheck comes from me the consumer. Wow Homer Dee POt please bring back skilled customer service with a smile and a quick turn around. Thank you. Went there to buy appliances and ended up having some issues with the installation... I talked to Bill the next day and he said to me, "no prob, I can come over and fix that right now" and he literally came to my house right then and not only fixed my problem, but went out of his way to help me sort out other unrelated issue. As a first time home owner, I can't even express how grateful I was to have someone like Bill genuinely looking out for my best interests and going above and beyond to provide exceptional customer service. When I was choosing appliances, I talked to both Chuck and Ed on separate occasions and they were both extremely patient, professional, and knowledgeable. Don't ever buy a warranty through Home Depot. It is a total rip off. We have a whirlpool washer under warranty that has been broken now for 6 weeks and is still not fixed. We have had 2 different service providers sent to fix it through Home Depot as per the warranty and no one has fixed it but replaced parts that did not need replacing with re manufactured parts. Numerous calls to Home Depot have been to no avail. They just keep sending service people to troubleshoot and replace parts. These service people do not even wait to see if the machine is working before they leave. Then when I call back to report it is still not working they set an appointment for another service person to come another week down the road to trouble shoot. Then it takes another week to get what they think will be a part that will work. We have had three different diagnosis on what's wrong to no avail. Home Depot refuses to replace the machine. What a nightmare.I have previously worked for the HD in Portland Or,and we were always told to make eye contact and ask if we could help.Not in this store.The employees in Encinitas will avoid looking at you,move away if you ask for help ,or say that they will be right back and disappear.I watched four employees stand around having a conversation (Sun 11th) while I tried to get someones attention.One particularly nasty individual is a guy named Chad,from the garden dept ,I think.He should never be allowed near any customers,EVER. After about an hour I left and went to Lowe's where I was helped immediately by a young lady who was helping someone else at the same time(multitasker!).I was on my way home within 10 minutes with my purchase.I will probably not be using my $6,000.00 limit HD card anytime soon but I will be applying for a Lowe's card.I previously always shopped at the Home Depot and rarely visited Lowe's but that is about to change. read more

I just wanted to express my gratitude and appreciation for Laney Agliam, the Operations Manager, at the Encinitas Home Depot. This past Christmas season, one of the children at my son's school lost his mother. The school wanted to reach out to the family by writing notes of love and support for their son by attaching them to a living tree. When I got to Home Depot, I was having a hard time keeping it together explaining the situation to customer service to see if they might be able to help the school with some of the expense. After producing a note on the school letterhead, Laney made sure that the most beautiful tree, complete with lights and snowflake ornaments was put together for this family in the hardest time of their lives. It brought them comfort, and love to see not only how their school community was thinking of them, but also how a giant store like Home Depot made sure that they were taken care of. They've gone overboard with 2-3 rows of extra junk down the middle of the aisles. Each time someone slows or stops to look at something especially if they have a cart, no one else can get by. Aggravating like freeways at rush hour here, and totally unnecessary. Two other major hardware chains are so much better organized and easier to navigate & find what you need - though maybe fewer stores than HD, worth the drive to avert this kind of hassle and time wastage. read more

Garden/Nursery tip: I bought a flat of ground cover at Evergreen a couple of weeks ago and all was great. Then I needed a little more to fill in some empty spots, and Home Depot was much closer to home, so I bought a flat of the same stuff there. Well, for the same price as Evergreen, Home Depot sold me the same size flat with HALF AS MANY PLANTS in it, infested with slugs, and the plants were a little anemic looking. Evergreen Nursery, I will never doubt you again! Don't get me wrong: I could wander the isles of Home Depot for days in wonder and contentment, but sometimes I see why it pays to go for quality. read more

I've been very happy with the service I've received and the products I've purchased at Home Depot over the years. When my home was flooded 3 years ago, I chose a lovely porcelain tile they had in stock, and I've been very pleased with it. The other day, I accidentally spilled white wine on it, which dulled the finish a bit, even though I wiped up the spill and mopped the floor promptly. I came in hoping to get some advice on how best to clean the tile, and Catherine Larson -- a flooring specialist -- took the time to look up information on porcelain tile and printed out guidelines for my use. While the guidelines didn't address the exact problem, I was able to find a product in stock that helped me restore the sheen to my tile, thanks to Catherine's helpful suggestions. read more

I was at Home Depot today trying to purchase propane. I wasn't sure what kind of tank to fill. While I was deciding I told the clerk to take the next person. In the meantime 5 more people got in line. When the clerk finished with the person behind me I went to take my place to finalize my purchase and the clerk told me "I HAVE TO GO TO THE BACK OF THE LINE." I told her "no I was just letting the person go ahead of me." She insisted I had to go to back of line. I was so upset I left. I went home and wound up going to San Marcos for propane. Negative to positive... Many years ago (+/-15) I bought windows and doors for my entire house by Window Master through The Home Depot. The windows had a lifetime guarantee and recently the screen doors had corroded so much that they fell apart. I called Home Depot discovered that Window Master was now owned by Jeldwen and I was put in touch with Rosemary who said that Home Depot had to submit a service request to proceed. Well when I called Home Depot back, the person (who will remain nameless) was rude and curt, acting l like I was imposing additional work on him. Finally after much ado he agreed to submit the work order and the last thing I said was let me know if there is any problem. Two weeks passed and nothing happened so I called Home Depot and the rude person that I had spoken to was off, but a new quite pleasant person took all my information and said he would leave a note for him to get back to me. Two more weeks passed with no call from Home Depot so I called Rosemary at Jeldwen and she said there was never a service request submitted. Rosemary was very helpful and said that because I had waited so long she waved the requirement and put me in touch with Dawn at Home Depot who does special orders. Enter Dawn, the reason for 5 ***** stars! Dawn did everything she could to help me through my claim but ultimately the warranty only covered the sliding doors / windows and not the screen doors even though they were attached. When I called Dawn to let her know she referred me to their windows department and said I could get a 15% discount through special orders. I purposely avoided the rude employee and ordered two sets of screen doors with careful measurements of length, width and thickness of the doors from a very helpful employee. The windows arrived two days ago and they didn't work because of an adjustment bracket. I called Dawn and she said she would try to match the doors if I brought in the old door and although there is no refund for special orders Dawn made an exception in this case. Now that is what I call customer service!!! read more

"Oh what you need is over there and if you don't see it we can't help you" that was in hardware. With the aid of one of the service reps, we bought a whirlpool fridge and Maytag stove from Home Depot over a month ago. When the delivery arrived, the fridge had a huge dent in the freezer door. Two weeks later, over Memorial Day weekend, they delivered the new fridge to replace the defective one. 24 hours later, the fridge had not cooled down and all our food had spoiled. Home Depot delivered a small loner fridge that has been taking up space in our living room for the past two weeks. Yesterday, yet another replacement fridge arrived. The delivery men dented the plaster wall moving it in. Six hours later we knew we had a problem yet AGAIN. The fridge wasn't remotely cooler. Having enough of this fiasco, we called Home Depot and spoke to a manager who passed us off and told us his "expediter" would call us back. Half an hour later, we once again called Home Depot, after being transferred all over the store the "expediter" picked up the phone and told us she was just processing our order, that the manager had told us we were going to give the fridge another shot. Huh?! That's not the conversation that took place. The "expediter" than spent time basically blaming us for purchasing a fridge from a company that was declaring bankruptcy. Excuse me? Why are you selling crappy products Home Depot? We dropped almost two grand on a fridge and you're telling us that we should have done a better job buying a better fridge? Not only have we not received a follow up phone call regarding when the junk fridge is going to be picked up, when our money is going to be refunded or when we're going to receive reimbursement for over $300 worth of spoilt food, we're made to feel bad at purchasing an overpriced, crap product from rude salespeople? Don't purchase from Home Depot. Go to Costco where customers aren't treated like crap for the poor decisions of a multi billion dollar corporation. I noticed there's a few "cut and paste" pseudo sympathy "we appreciate your feedback because it makes us a better store" remarks from Home Depot's customer service Dept. on this Yelp page. Instead of posting insincere comments, how about actually doing the work to provide better customer service? How this could have been resolved professionally? Your manager could have asked for clarification (e.g., "So, you'd like to return the fridge?"), your follow up team could have called us back and said that they got in touch with Whirlpool delivery, they will call you on this day to schedule pick up, at which point we will call you to let you know that we refunded you the amount you paid for your fridge along with the extended warranty because we know how inconvenient it has been to spend two grand on a product, and spend over a month dealing with poor service and a crappy product. read more

I have shopped at Home Depot for over 20 years since I've been in California. I start projects and sometimes don't finish them for a year. It is very difficult to keep receipts but I put everything on my American Express credit cards. Unfortunately as they expire a new ones are issued, Home Depot is unable to find the purchases I have made. I recently attempted to return $350 worth of merchandise in new condition which was scanned in as theirs but I was And informed it was tonight and I would have to call a number. Upon calling the number I said because I didn't have the receipts I would not be able to return any of the merchandise for credit. They said I could dispute It but without receipts they would deny it. When I asked about why they couldn't find charges that I had made on my American Express account and they said that it just wasn't there. Went to this Home Depot and it was just as good as any Home Depot. However, what set this one apart from all the other Home Depots I've been to was the staff. There was a gentlemen (I didn't catch his name) that helped me pick out a cordless drill for a good 30 minutes. He was extremely knowledgeable, went over pros and cons of different brands, and took his time. Then I went to the checkout and Samantha helped me. Samantha was professional, courteous, had a huge smile, and most importantly, was extremely nice. I wish all cashiers were like Samantha. We're building a bathroom from studs & he gave me the most thorough education on what & what NOT to buy to save future headaches. I never felt like he was trying to rush me. You have the same chance of finding a competent employee there as you do finding a unicorn with wings on the Appalachian trail. There simply are none. the younger ones move very slow, don't seem motivated and some have boogers in their nose, etc. There are nicer but very old employees there but they are even slower and untrained. Very few people know what the hell they are talking about or how to do basic store things that you can't do yourself as a customer, and I suspect if there is anybody like that they are swamped and never available. There was people in the paint department standing around talking to each other but they were unwilling or unable to help with anything else. They screwed up my order and forgot some details that I told them about probably 5 times. The computers are also slow and/or inaccurate, they advertise things they don't have and then waste your time trying to get. Also the managers don't seem very much better from the few I have talked to. Home Depot I suspect is paying people very low wages like some other retail stores but its not fair to sell the things they do and be this clueless. This store is an absolute mess unless you are buying a light bulb and heading straight for the self check out. Avoid the store or come with an abundance of patience and low expectations. read more

Worst customer service from a Home Depot ever. I waited 45 minutes to get a person to help me. I asked for help from employees 4 times and waited with no response. I then called the store and the woman who answered was rude and no apology for my wait. When I finally asked one of the employees I had spoken to if he could help me he said he was very busy. The department I needed help in had one person. In the 45 minutes I had waited there was no one. This guy now was cutting wood and two more customers racing towards him. I finally got a person to load 3 of the items I needed. He checked for availability for the 4th and told me there were plenty but the one employee who could operate a lift was busy.
