Great service and a nice atmosphere. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, the first day Walton street was closed off to traffic. We decided to eat on the patio since there were no street level tables with umbrellas. Even on the patio, it was very sunny and there was no way we could keep out of the sun, Which was quite strong that day. During the time we ate our meal there appeared to be new umbrellas delivered, which were attached to tables in the street. We ordered vegetarian poutine which seemed to be just fries and gravy. We were up in Syracuse recently to check out the university with my son and while there we tried to find some good food, good beer, and places with a fun atmosphere. In fact, the Wil Wheaton Stout was so good I ordered a follow up glass. For our food we started with a hummus plate (homemade hummus, veggies and pita) and the classic Poutine (OMG the gravy was amazing). Wifey ordered the Classic burger, I had the Blue Ribbon Burger, and my son had the Buffalo chicken sandwich. We also finished up with the chocolate tart. THIRD try at ordering. THIRD FAILURE at being able to put together a basic, three item order. They are near me. I know I was stupid for thinking they would improve. Should never have wasted my time, appetite or money here. Three times I ordered just three items. Three times in a row they absolutely and utterly fail at being able to prepare three items from their menu. NO SPECIAL REQUESTS. Just three items from their menu. They decided what was on their menu. Did they really not train their staff to prepare it? Management is to blame. These kinds of repeat failures aren't usually just the fault of the staff. This place is literally the last remaining gastropub in armory. With empire and tusk gone, this is your spot. Was in town to watch Dino Baber's football team and after a long drive from NYC on a Thursday I was happy and surprised to see this place was still serving food at 9 pm. My wife and I ordered poutine and fried chicken sandwiches. The poutine was fine, nothing amazing, but the chicken sandwich was absolute fire. Delicious pretzel bun and great sauce. The Dirty Bird I think it was called. The service was good too, and they had a huge selection of craft beers, including a ton of sour Al's to try. The ambiance is fine, could use a bit more character to the walls etc but it gets the job done. Cool game room in back. Steer clear of the poutine. The so-called "Classique" is nothing more than fries and gravy. Authentic classic poutine has shaved beef plus plenty of cheese curd. For 13 bucks, you feel cheated. Their pierogie poutine was merely ok. Their burgers may be better, but I'm doubtful I'll return to find out. Acoustics are atrocious, with loud noise bouncing off the bare walls and floor. One of Armory Square's largest dining venues is now home to a 42-tap craft beer bar with a menu that highlights burgers and the Canadian pub favorite poutine. The Hops Spot, which had operated in Sackets Harbor on the shore of Lake Ontario until last fall, opened early August in the heart of Armory Square Owners Ryan and Cheryl Chaif hope to fill a niche in the popular Armory Square district with a focus on a variety of craft beers, including their own from Skewed Brewing. Skewed, which has a tap room in Watertown's Salmon Run Mall, will offer its beers and its own line of brewed kombucha (Bodhi) and craft sodas. I heard of the Hops Spot about a week before they did their soft open. The wife and I had plans with another couple for the weekend, so we suggested the Hops Spot after looking at their delicious sounding menu. We headed there about 7 PM on a Saturday after a rousing game of mini golf. Hops Spot is on Walton St, so there's plenty of on street parking around. We had to park behind the MOST, but that was still only about a 5 minute walk. We had about a 20 minute wait before we were sat, which wasn't too bad for a brand new restaurant downtown on a Saturday. My friends and wife all tried a couple different beers and really liked them. I don't drink, so I was there strictly for the food. The inside is huge and bright, very nicely and modernly decorated. We all looked over the menu and all decided on different poutines to try. One of my friends is vegetarian and went for the vegetarian poutine, while the other chose The Amarillo, which also happens to be vegetarian. My wife and I went for the Tikka Masala and Dirty Bird dishes and decided to eat half of each so we could try them both. Our food was delivered pretty quickly and we all dug in. Everyone really liked their dishes. The fries were great, fresh cut fries. The Tikka Masala was covered in a sweet curry sauce, but I much prefer the the Dirty Bird, covered in chicken tenders, Alabama white BBQ sauce, pickles and jalapenos. Absolutely delicious. Our server was very bubbly and friendly, and prices were comparable to other similar restaurants. We will definitely be back, especially cause we went during their soft opening and they'll be adding even more dishes for their official opening. Definite recommend. read more

The drinks were good, service was good, pierogis were good... but the one thing I went there for the "poutine" left much to be desired. I had the classic poutine and my friend had the Belgian frites. I have never had poutine where the cheese curds were completely cold. The poutine I've had the cheese is warm and melted from at a minimum the hot gravy, but a lot of restaurants put it in the salamander for a bit to get that ooooey gooeyyyy cheese going. I hope they upgrade their method a bit because this place has so much potential. I only got a pic of the Belgian frites but the classic didn't look much better. read more

A must try if you like fresh beer and a great burger! It was so good, I went back to back nights. Grass-fed beef, always preferred and much appreciated. You know they care about customers when they offer it. I tried the Sweet Heat one night, yes please, but they got a ton of options to please a crowd. Fries were yummy. Nice place. Very friendly staff. They easily and very willingly accommodated us with a big group and lots of babies. The food was great. I want to love it and give it 5 stars. But I have to give it 4 because of my kids experience, which I'll explain. A drawback: NO MIXED DRINKS. That was disappointing. Also a very limited wine list. There are TVs. But a good view really depends on where you sit. So if you are going to watch an SU game, you might need to ask to be sat near a TV. Giant PRO: The toddler area is amazing. I think all restaurants need a space like that!! It had little figurines, coloring pages, and a slide!! That was awesome! But another drawback: The back room had corn hole and a Nintendo, as well as some other fun things to do. But only for 21 and up! My 12 and 14 year olds were extremely disappointed that they were not allowed back there. It was also dead for most of the time we were there. I feel like kids should be allowed to use the space with their parents accompaniment, since there was something for everyone else but them. It kept us, the parents, from enjoying that back space because our kids had to sit at the table and weren't allowed to do anything. So they sat at the table bored while the little kids had a fun spot and the moms and dads COULD HAVE had fun in the back. That really ruined what could have been such a fun evening for all. So,... great place for toddlers, great for moms of toddlers. Ok for dads trying to watch a sports game. NOT ok for tweens and teens or their parents. read more

Walked in with my family and my baby in his stroller at (what looked like) the busiest time for dinner on a Saturday night. The man at the host booth said that there was a 30 minute wait but when he saw us with our little one he was able to fix up a quick table for us. We were okay with waiting because the food and drinks are so great, but as a new mom it meant a lot to me that he went out of his way to accommodate my family. This is the kind of service that you remember and return to a restaurant over. Even though the place was packed, our food and drinks came out very quickly and tasted great. Bathroom was clean. Recently had our post holiday party at The Hops Spot in downtown armory square! To say that the entire experience was amazing, would be an understatement! The owner was incredible and was beyond accommodating! The main room has an enormous bar which encompassed almost the entire center of the establishment. Super busy that night, but we were lucky to have our own room reserved! The back game room transformed from corn hole and bocci ball courts to a beautiful banquet room littered with cold and hot hors d'oeuvres and even came with OUR OWN BAR/BARTENDERS!! I mean helllloooo?!? How awesome is that!?! And those hors d'oeuvres.... Oooooo they were ON POINT! Humus platter, cheese/ fruit boards, chicken tendies with buttermilk ranch, corn meal fried pickles, spinach artichoke dip, 3 types of burger sliders, not one but two types of poutine and build your own taco bar (with Fritos just in case you feel like walking)! They were so amazing that they even had vegan poutine options available upon request! With 90's hits boppin for some background music, it really was the perfect way to ring in the new year! 10/10 recommend The Hops Spot for not only a night on the town, but also a work party! I popped in for lunch on a weekday while down the street at MOST. They have a wide selection of beers, including plenty of sours, although I'm not sure that the selection is particularly distinguished. I was happy with my 10oz pour of a sour. The bartender said that they had table service and to grab whatever table I wanted, but I was in enough of a hurry that I switched to the bar after a few minutes at a table without seeing any server. That was all good, as I got my beer and traditional poutine in short order. The fries were awesome, the curds looked and tasted like curds (without rocking my world), and the gravy was just okay. Next time, I'll probably try some of the other poutines, which seem less authentic, but might be tastier. (And what I had wasn't bad, it just wasn't amazing, either.) This seems like a fine place for a beer and some pub food. read more

So I wasn't expecting much with this spot based on the menu but was pleasantly surprised. First I loved that the drink menu had something for everyone from beer, to cider, and even hard seltzer which is what I had and it was amazing. I ended up with a Turkey burger and traditional poutine which I had never had before and it was okay. The Rutgers burger however was one of the best I have ever had. The restaurant itself is very cute and looks much different from its Dorsey's days however the women's bathroom has still managed not to change with an outside door that doesn't fully shut, not all stalls being able to be locked, and huge gaps in the stalls so people Can see in. This was creepy when it was Dorsey's and is creepy now. read more

Stopped in for lunch based on many previous reviews. Place was fairly crowded as several college basketball games were on the tvs surrounding the bar. We were seated right away and handed menus along with their extensive craft beer list. Their specialties appear to be focused around many burger and poutine choices. Decided upon the three degrees of Kevin Bacon burger which was very good. Service was a little slow as our server was also working the bar- and tended to forget about us from time to time (never asked how our meal was or if we needed anything else). We came for drinks before dinner next door and their mixed drinks and menu were quite creative. My mom and I both loved the Frankly My Dear, I Don't Give a Jam, which was made with House Strawberry and Thyme Vodka, St. Germain and a house made Strawberry Jam Lemonade. My dad got the Tequila Mockingbird, a concoction of house made Valencia Orange Tequila, Lime, Ginger, Simple Syrup and Grapefruit Soda, which he really liked, but was too heavy on the tequila for either my mom or me. My friend got the Winnie Palmer, made with House Sweet Tea Bourbon, Lemonade and  Grapefruit Bitters. She liked it enough, but said it too was a bit strong. First time visiting and I was impressed. It was a Saturday afternoon and fairly quiet. We had our 10 month old with us which wasn't a problem at all. They actually have a play area in the back but it's currently closed due to COVID so it's a pretty family friendly place. The service was good and the food was great. We had Le Bloc poutine and the combo of the bleu cheese with the maple syrup was really tasty. We also had the bleu cheese burger and the pickle Rick which were both pretty good. The only thing holding me back from giving 5 stars was the lack of variety of the beer selection. They have a great variety if you like IPAs but didn't have many other options. My wife was also a little disappointed because of the few non-IPA options the 2 she asked for were both out so she had to settle something else. All in all I would go back again. I'd just hope to find a few more options on the beer menu next time. read more

Was in town for a long weekend and met a local who recommended the Hops Spot for lunch. We went around lunchtime on a Sunday and the place was fairly empty. Our server promptly greeted us -- we ordered a strawberry mimosa and several types of beer. As the self-proclaimed poutinerie, we just had to get some poutine! At our server's recommendation, we order the "Dirty Plate" to split. The beers were super fun and generally good - highly recommend. They offer multiple sizes, so it's very easy to taste a bunch. The strawberry mimosa -- consisting of house made strawberry puree (from frozen strawberries), strawberry liquor, and champagne -- came out quickly. It was served in a stemless wine glass and filled roughly 1/4-1/3 the cup - VERY stingy for a $7.50 drink. Upon tasting it, it was luke-warm, did not smell good, and did NOT taste good. Ended up returning this drink - do NOT recommend this. The Dirty Plate Poutine was delicious. The chopped chicken tenders were perfectly bite size and dill pickles added a nice surprise. Highly Recommend these! There is street parking that is free on Sundays and after 6pm the rest of the week and there is a parking garage 1/2 a block away as well as a public lot on the back side of the building. Outdoor seating, a bible of beer options, and tons of burger choices. Tex Mex Burger: 4/5, with all these amazing options it was a tough choice. But "jalapeño bacon" cmon. Tough to continue reading after that. The burger was pretty damn good. A little bit on the smaller side, but fantastic flavor and cooked perfect.
