I'm a social person, don't get me wrong. But sometimes, all I want is some delicious, no-frills food that sticks to my ribs in a place that no one will bother me and I can eat in peace. The Huddle is that place, a classic diner where I inhaled an excellent, perfectly crispy patty melt with grilled onions, and scratched my Twin Peaks itch with a cup of damn fine coffee and a slice of cherry pie baked this morning. All while I gazed at a map that said "PLEASE PIN YOUR HOMETOWN" at the top (you best believe I added a pin). Regulars chat with the cook and servers at the counter, and it's charming that you have to pass through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. Prices are insanely reasonable. Great Mom and pop place with the most amazing food. Went for breakfast and had a spinach and feta omelette and it was amazing! Nice to know that they even have Gluten free items like bread and Gluten free French toast. The atmosphere here is so friendly and down to earth you can't help but to feel at home. I ordered the Eggs Benedict w Crab and the hollandaise sauce was not real hollandaise sauce, it has a wierd sour taste, base tastes like it was mayonnaise and I would def not recommend or have this again. I did not feel welcomed, they look at you like you're an alien, and their niceness seems forced. Overall, I don't recommend and won't be returning. read more

My boyfriend and I sort of stumbled upon this place while looking for some time to kill before our cruise boarded. It's located in an adorable little neighborhood and is a super, family owned type of hole in the wall joint. When you walk in, it honestly feels like you're not in San Diego anymore. The set up is pretty small, only about 10 tables and a kitchen in the middle. We were easily able to grab a spot on a weekday morning. Their menu had a bunch of options. I decided to get an omelet & loved the option for refried beans and tortillas over the traditional potatoes or hash browns. The omelet was very good. The portion was huge and the ingredients were fresh. My all time favorite part of the meal though was the homemade salsa. OMG, that stuff was good! I highly recommend checking this place out for an outstanding breakfast if you're in the area. Also make sure to silence your phone out of respect for other diners. read more

Living only 2 blocks away from The Huddle for 8 years, today was the first time I finally made a visit and upon arrival, I immediately felt welcomed and felt like I was at home. I ordered the Wednesday special which was a Spanish omelette with choice of hashbrowns or country fries and side of toast all under $10! The Spanish omelette had an amazing cheese pull and the hashbrowns were crisped to perfection on the outside. I also had to try their homemade jams where they were offering 4+ different varieties. The server was kind enough to offer me both the strawberry + apple cinnamon jam, both of which were devine!! The Huddle is truly a local staple with its 'no frills' mom-and-pop vibe where they focus on creating a homey feel and delicious diner-type food with ridiculously reasonable prices for such large portions of food! I ended up talking to the server and a gentleman next to me about politics, holiday plans, etc and this restaurant just really fosters such a welcoming atmosphere where you feel like you're just catching up with old friends. This place is truly local magic, and my only regret is that I found this hidden gem 8 years too late. I hope to become a regular! A newbie to the huddle the history behind this small breakfast hidden hub has been feeding patrons for decades and is now a family run operation. This cozy restaurant has all the makings for what a great diner has to offer and more. The staff go over and beyond to get to know their customers and don't seem to forget any faces. Craving biscuits and gravy I was bummed they were sold out so I went simple with eggs, hash browns, sausage and toast. Although, I was sad I am so happy I got the chance to try their rhubarb jam and apple butter which they bottle up and sell in house. The apple butter was everything fall spread all over my toast. It brought a smile to my face and was the perfect sweetness to round off my all American breakfast. Since the pecan rolls are made in house I had to try it. Yumm this sweet treat was hot and scrumptious. I am sure this is a reason so many come in. I am not a huge sweets person so I definitely needed help licking the plate. My two friends split an omelet with hash browns and you can see how large and in charge these plates are. Due to inflation I think the prices have risen. 3.5 stars Came here early morning for breakfast to try their corned beef hash. I chose this place because other more well known places get really busy or require reservations. I liked that they open at 5:30 Mon - Sat, and 7:30 on sundays. So i got there at around 6 which was great because most places aren't even open at that time. There is only street parking but at that hour there is no problem. I ordered my usual, Corned beef hash, 2 over medium eggs, hash browns and english muffin. The hash browns and corned beef hash were cooked perfectly. They both had a very nice crust on them which gives it a nice textural element to it, which i think is the key to a good corned beef hash. I don't think they are home made but, still very good. Its a nice small old school diner, i think the counter holds about 12 people and when the weather permits, they bring out a few tables outside. Service is good, the guy seemed to be a bit gruff and stern at first but once you start talking he opens up and you realize thats just the way he talks. I mean you're not talking to a bright cheery hostess, they are the owners and seem to run the place by themselves, at least for breakfast. They seem to have many regulars, who they know by name and are friends with. The place seems a bit run down, and the ceiling could use replacing but you know you're in an old school diner so don't expect anything fancy, just good simple breakfast food done right. They are also open for lunch which i want to check out some time and try their chicken and waffle that i hear so much about; but most likely i'll be here for breakfast before work, when I'm too lazy too make anything, since they open at 5:30. read more

The Huddle had been at this location for over 40 years, or more. The ownership may have changed, but the food quality has always been good. They offer everything you would expect for a breakfast and lunch place. From eggs, to waffles and hamburgers. Everything here is flavorful and made with the best ingredients. Also, if you are a fan of the cinnamon rolls from the Del Mar fair, they have them here and they taste exactly the same. These are amazing cinnamon rolls. This place is so easy to miss. I was starving one day and in desperate need of hash browns and google led me here. It's teeny tiny but long! More seating than I expected. It's old fashioned in its decor, dishes, and service in a way that is impeccably charming. You can sit at their little bar and see the cooks whip up your meal and joke with each other. There are viewmasters at the tables! Remember those? Binoculars with pictures that you pull a lever to move between. It was a blast to my childhood and so fun to look through. The food is standard diner food but it feels like mama made it herself. I ordered scrambled eggs and hash browns and the waitress asked me a couple times if I wanted toast because although I said no apparently I seemed like I needed toast, and you know what? She was right. I did need toast. The toast came with an assortment of house made jams that are DELICIOUS and sold there by the jar. I came a second time and got an amazing vegetarian quiche and hash browns (for under ten dollars, thank you). I ordered a hot cocoa because I was quite in the mood and the waiter (who was the cook last time I came!) cracked lots of jokes and poked fun at me, but also brought me the most delicious looking cocoa I've seen in a while. Leaving after my first visit I was gifted two "huddle bucks" for two dollars off the next time I came, and a bunch card leading to a free entree. I've come several times and I've never been disappointed. The food is always better than I expected and the atmosphere is so warm and welcoming. It's absolutely the kind of place that lives on regulars and that's what I look for. If you're looking for a cozy meal for yourself, this is the spot. I have been here five times the past two months and each time the food and service is phenomenal . Very inexpensive and they have a reward system in the form of "Huddle Bucks" and a trusty hole-punch card that builds up to a free meal. The huddle is a very small diner, feels like something that belongs more in North Park area than this Mission Hills area. Food is very traditional comfort American breakfast food. My BF got the eggs, bacon, and hash browns. The bacon were fried to perfection, crispy, thick and tasty. I got the chicken and waffle, which the chicken had a great fried skin and flavor to it. My partner in crime and I were out looking for a breakfast spot and almost went to Brooklyn Girl Eatery, but they were closed (Monday morning). We almost went across the street to The Patio on Goldfinch, but we saw a guy walking out of The Huddle and he recommended we go in. He told us he eats there regularly and that both the food and service were great. To us that was a sign that we need to try the place. This place is a no frills, old school diner. It's a smaller place, so probably not good for a bigger group (of 6 or more). We were greeted, seated and menus were brought out. We ended up ordering: chicken and waffles (for me) and French toast, eggs, and bacon (which was the daily breakfast special); it was all pretty good. The place looks old school and could probably use a little renovation, but I feel it gives the place some character. Our server was nice, funny (cracked a few jokes), and attentive. He made sure our drinks were filled and that we were happy with our food. Overall, we had a good experience. I'd return again for breakfast. read more

Going here for breakfast was a spur of the moment decision. And one I have mostly regretted. Even for San Diego, it was muggy hot that day. And inside this restaurant, it was even hotter. Horrid. We started to walk out, and they stopped us. "There is a cooler dining room in the back." Ok. Yes, there are counter seats that view the open grill in the front dining room (hot), followed by a prep kitchen (cluttered and also hot) and then you will find a small, window-less, add-on room with several tables (much cooler). So we walked through the hot cluttered kitchen and grabbed a table. This is a predictable, greasy spoon menu. There were three of us and each ordered something different. One Chicken fried steak, one pork chop, and one hamburger patty (advertised as "fresh"). The 7 oz hamburger was grossly disfigured, the obvious result of hand molding. I could have been ok with that, except they grilled the bee-Jesus out of it, rendering it hard and dry, and shrunken to about a 4 oz size. The country fries were probably some of the blandest potatoes to ever cross my lips. The eggs, ok. There was a lot of salting and peppering going on to make this breakfast palatable. The pork chop, one center-cut, was thin, but not over cooked. Nothing special. The eggs were done right, but the hash browns, while creamy on the inside, had an artificial butter flavor throughout. Unforgiven. The chicken fried steak was the winner of the three. Meat and gravy were quite decent. The only other thing worthy of mentioning was the toast and jam. Good whole wheat toast, nicely buttered. And they brought out three small to-go containers of homemade jams. The apple butter was sadly over-spiced. Nice try, but let's work on the recipe. The strawberry was just ok. But the marmalade, that was a WOW. Really nicely done. And do not take this compliment lightly, because I rarely enjoy orange marmalade. Would I return here? No. Someone in their review mentioned the proximity to Hash House A Go Go. While I am not a fan of Hash House, I would pick that first over this breakfast. But there are so many nice SD places we have been to already, this will never happen. read more

GREAT place for breakfast if you like the Diner-ish feel. This place is small, but it's also long and narrow. There are seats at the counter and small tables along the wall of the restaurant. The food was excellent, and the prices were low. Not as low as a traditional diner, but not as expensive as one of those fancy breakfast places.
