This is a great spot with well done food. The real attraction is a lovely back room/patio with a tree growing in the center and plexiglass ceiling. Makes for a charming oasis in the city. This place is great. From the food, to the service to the seasonal offerings. You go here for the food and stay here for the outdoor section during the months where weather permits-it's larger than the inside. They have TVs to watch games, etc, couches, chairs, tables and booths all outdoors. Their backyard, as I'll call it, is definitely the reason to go (aside from the food), and if you're worried about that being hot, don't because it's got a tree cover. Also there's a nice amount of privacy because of the higher fence and the inability to enter the restaurant outdoors (or can only enter in the front). Spoiler: crowning The Hutton as an early 2019 favorite. Now that The Hutton has been open for over a year, it's time for a proper review. Plus, a new Chef is at the helm creating different, more elevated dishes than previously. It's definitely hipstery. Lots of copper, wood, saffron curtains around the entry way. Special pottery for different menu items. Service was sweet, considerate and gracious. Food - it's good. Really good. Chef Carlos is at the kitchen's helm and doing wonderful things with the new menu. Definitely order one of the specials, which change daily and frequently sell out. Jamaican jerk calamari was a dud. Coating was flaking off and calamari itself was chewy. Too salty and no jerk flavor. Pass. Warm olives were, on the other hand a great way to start the meal. Served with crispy zatar spiced fried pasta crackers. Freshly sliced prosciutto and burrata with grilled bread was phenomenal. My favorite of the night, hands down (and I thought I was over buratta). That triple mousse cake with luxardo cherries is worth the calories. Creamy, smooth, airy, decadent your taste buds will be thanking you over and over again. Chocolate crumble was the perfect complementary addition. Yum! Live music on Fridays is a great time. Come early for dinner as it was a bit hard to hear over the music (it's loud). Not a ton of dancing going on yet. Definitely add the Hutton to your JC dining repertoire. Might I say, worth a trip from far away. I have stopped by for several visits and have a good overall impression of the place. The remodel was nicely done, and I am really looking forward to taking advantage of the backyard in the warm weather. I also have not yet been to brunch, which I am looking forward to trying. Drink wise I have only had their cocktails and am a big fan of the Jersey City Donkey (Jameson Black and ginger beer). All of their signature cocktails are interesting and nicely priced at $8.00. I haven't had beer here, but seem to remember seeing some nice options on draft. On all of my visits the service has been great, especially the bartenders who are very amiable and attentive. In terms of food, I think a comparison of the Hutton and some other new arrivals to the area like Fox and Crow and PJ Ryans Squared is a good starting point. The menus at all three are at a higher price point than typical for the neighborhood, with the Hutton having the most ambitious menu of the pack. Burgers at all three are typically $14.00 -16.00, so while sometimes I feel like the Hutton can be a bit pricy, it seems to be in line with its peers and offers a few more formal dishes as well. Chef has been updating the menu frequently since opening and seems to be looking to strike a balance between moderately priced bar type food and a bistro menu. I recently came to this bar/restaurant on a late Saturday night, with my girlfriend and friends. This is a very nice spot. They had a very large bar area with tables, as well as a nice outside area. The weather was great, so we were mixing it up between hanging by the bar and outside area. We ordered a few appetizers with our drinks as well. I personally enjoyed the honey glazed wings. They were perfect. I tried their lemon fries and onion rings,and both of these were amazing as well. Someone ordered one of their burgers, and it looked delicious. I tried a bite of it and it was to die for. I will definitely be coming back here for a burger. I was drinking vodka and club, and they were made with the perfect amount of alcohol. We found easy parking, and sat down immediately. The Hutton is definitely one of my top three favourite spots in the Heights. I visited for the first time in 2019 and have never had a bad experience since- either with delivery or dining in. The food is consistently amazing and the drinks are always refreshing. I was initially drawn to this spot when I heard that they had an outdoor backyard that's open in the summer. The space is quaint, had great music and just a chill vibe.. I was also surprised to see that it was very family friendly despite it being a bar. Upon walking in, I'm always greeted almost immediately. All servers have been extremely friendly and attentive... they all frequently check in on you to get you more cocktails, water etc.. After all, who likes having to wait forever to get a new drink? Now for my favourite part.. the food. The chefs at The Hutton have perfected every single dish.. like wow, the food is seriously amazing. My all time favourite is definitely the marinated skirt steak. I've never had skirt steak so juicy and flavourful before... like ever.. no joke! They pair it with battered shishitos, succulent mushrooms and a tomato based sauce that make you want to lick the entire plate when you're done. Their Valentina chicken wings are also pretty damn good! A dish that actually surprised me was their apple guacamole that they paired with plantain chips.. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did, but the combinations of crisp apples, goat cheese and avocados just go surprisingly well together. By now, I've tried most of their non-seafood dishes and they're ALL delicious- yes, every single one. Summary: great place for outdoor food/drinks with TVs and a roof! Covid-19 has definitely reduced the number of reviews I've been able to write, as bars and restaurants have greatly reduced services. In general, outdoor space is the priority, and while I'm not a huge fan of sidewalk seating, it's been an effective way for bars to keep revenue flowing during the warmer months. The Hutton does this one step better - they have a huge outdoor patio with plenty of socially distanced tables. I actually grew up a few blocks from here and remember when this used to be a simple dive bar. Well, that's all in the past as the Hutton now more closely espouses the overall refresh that has engulfed the Heights over the past decade. Very modern decor that feels more "Downtown Jersey City" rather than "half block away from Mosquito Park". They have a few TVs scattered around the edges, so it's definitely a way to catch sports games (just in time for football season!). And fear not - for there is a massive roof that covers all the seating, so you won't get burnt to a crisp (or soaked if there's a little drizzle). Food is overall pretty good - I like their wings and I found the burger to be pretty good as well, although in general the food is a bit on the pricey side. I dont partake, so can't say much other than, they presented well. The food, on the other hand, was delicious. Highly recommend the cauliflower wings and guacamole with banana chips to start. We crushed those apps between the four of us. I ordered the lobster burrito. Definitely a fatkidfoodie's dream. Wifey ordered mussels. Huge plate. Our friends ordered the sriracha chicken sandwich and chicken bolognase. Everyone was really happy with their meal. We finished with 4 cappucinos and split the mini doughnuts. Do yourself a favor; come here hungry with a minimum of 4 people. Order apps, entrees, and dessert. We made a reservation at 8pm for outdoor seating since it's been a while since we dine out. And for that reason we decided still go even though it's projected to rain. We called ahead at 7pm to find out if they are still accommodating outdoor seating which we were told we could still go. Upon arrival, the host told us they don't have anything available for us until 8:45pm, that is an hour later. We saw 2 tables available but was told those were reserved ( for people who specified they want to sit on the patio) hello?!? We also made a reservation, and we called an hour prior to driving to the restaurant, was told we can still come even though it's raining. If we can't be accommodated I expect a call ahead of the reservation not to be turned away when we arrive. Not to mentioned we took the initiative to call. To me, it's a poor reservation management and bad hospitality. How good is the food, I may never find out, but the customer service is definitely not on par. You can tell off the bat that these people have passion for what they do. They have great reviews and as a professional reviewer it is my duty to try. The burger stuck out at me. It came with cheddar and a bacon jam. The bacon jam was very salty which made the balance of flavor a little off. The burger was cooked to my liking and other than the salty jam it was pretty good. The onion rings were the star of the show. They were delicious. Idk what kind of batter they made it with but they were AWESOME. The fries were also good. They were perfectly fried and just the right texture. They were also not greasy at all. Great side orders. The buffalo cauliflower was also pretty good. It has a great buffalo flavor and they have buffalo wing options as well but if you are trying save on the calories get the cauliflower. I can tell they really are trying in here. This is a nice neighborhood bar / restaurant. I liked the ambiance when I entered the building. They have an outdoor patio that looked lovely but we couldn't sit there due to the weather. Service was very good. Jackson checked in on us often and even took a special drink request for me. It wasn't busy when we went to dinner around 7:45pm. Menu - check their website! It was quite different than what is shown on Yelp. Some of the items I saw posted on Yelp are what brought me in only to discover that they were not available. Overall our food had flavor except it was not piping hot, just warm at best. That was a disappointment. The Onion Rings could have stayed in the fryer a bit longer because they were doughy and undercooked. The Lemon Fries were tasty except not hot. Our two favorites were Grandma's Meatballs (we got 5) and the Butter Lettuce Wedge. Aimee, the manager, did offer us another order however we wanted to try a dessert. The Donuts were very tasty. Since it's lent my husband and I gave up alcohol (I know we're insane lol) so we asked the waitress to ask the bartender to do a mocktail for me. Went to dinner w two other couples for birthday celebration. The Hutton has done a great job w creating heated outdoor dining during these covid times. Our server was very good. We ordered one of each of the apps. The meatballs were a big hit at the table as were the spicy onion rings and lemon fries. Everyone enjoyed their entrees too. The standout desserts were the apple dessert w graham cracker gelato and the fresh made donuts. If you are looking to eat out and want outdoor dining absolutely make a reservation here.
