I'm always nervous about going to new repair shops . . . usually feel like they try to sell me on things that I may not need. However, my experience with Import Doctors was much different. They were honest and suggested what I needed to fix, however gave me options on what was most important. These guys have huge car knowledge (German and Asian cars!) and it feels familial with good atmosphere when you interact with any staff member. They're located one big block away walking from Chinatown. Prior call to get an appointment is recommended, and if you do you even can ask for a estimated quotes if you know the fixes you need to the secretary responding the phone. If she has time like when I call she did it. I took my VW Touareg Hybrid for a 60k service to import doctors, these folks did an average job. It's a complex car to service mind you but Ken and Steve sounded super confident. For most part it was alright but like they say the quality is always in small details. This is where import doctors need to pay attention. Small relatively easy job like pollen filter replacement was done badly. AC outlet water pipes weren't aligned well after the job and water from Condensation was inside the car. Had to go back. They fixed it but lost half day. One of the screws on the pollen filter apparatus was omitted under the glove compartment and it l caused massive squeaking and very irritating constant noise. It took me while to identity where the noise was coming from. After months of trial and error when I ducked under the glove compartment with bright lights I found the problem. The entire assembly was loose. That was really sad, had to go the dealership and get the whole assembly re fixed. Again time and money spent. This could have been avoided. I will not go back. Sorry guys. You lost your stars and a customer. read more

I've been coming here for 4 years to service my 2002 Honda CRV. Steve and Ken are awesome dudes who always have my best interests and safety in mind. car: BMW 335i coupe. 1st visit: problem description: water pump and thermostat. BMW Seattle asked $2500 for this fix :) Steve and Import doctors fixed it promptly in 1 day time, with OEM parts, provided me with 2 years warranty for less than half the price. Awesome service and communication and great job done overall! They recommended a few more repairs for minor oil leaks, and doing so Steve was kind enough and very helpful showing me exactly where on the engine to look for signs for oil leak. 2nd visit: problem description: I took a car to D&H Automotive for a leaking oil hose, and here is what they did before Import Doctors fixed it. They (D&H Automotive) cut the hose (why? no idea. Maybe to check for leaks? :)) removed the entire air intake system, placed it in my trunk (!!!), removed the engine plastic bed, put it in plastic, and removed a few more hoses along the way! D&H Automotive said that the thermostat is the problem and towed it, MESSED UP LIKE THAT, to Steve and Import doctors. What just happened?!?! So I got a call from Steve, and went there the next day early morning. Import Docs had a video of everything, as they too were amazed and shocked as I was when they saw how this guy from D&H Automotive delivered the car to them, in a complete mess! Next day Steve called me with the good news. Not only that they had the leaking hose replaced (same one that was cut haha), they did the proper stress pressure testing, verified that indeed it was only the hose that was leaking, they documented everything, including the state the car was delivered to them, put everything back in place, and not charging me extra for fixing that mess D&H Auto did. I've been going to the Import Doctor's since the early 90s. They have cared for my VW, and our Nissan and Infinity. The first time I visited, when they told me how much my bill was, I said, "That's all?" They are the first honest and reasonable mechanics I've ever known and worked with, and we also call for their advice before purchasing new cars. I found them to be the first mechanics that didn't talk down to me as a woman. They always listen to what I say is happening with the car and consider my views. I took my Jetta TDI in to get a new alternator a couple of months ago and they got me in right away and did a great job. I was going to write a review at that time, but it fell to the bottom of my list. Then today, my car mysteriously would not start. I called and described the problem to Marco, complete with sound effects, and he told me exactly how to fix the problem myself! I compare that with the service I got from the dealership who told me that they couldn't really diagnose a problem like that from my description and I should have it towed to them. He did an oil change and an inspection on some warning lights on my BMW after this year's major snowstorm. Not only did he not try to gouge me on the synthetic, he also gave me hints on how to do the other repairs myself. In July 2013, I traveled 2400 miles from Houston, Texas to Seattle, Washington. Upon arrival my 1984 Vanagon was suffering an exhaust leak. Taking the Vanagon to the Import Doctors, they came up with an analysis that I needed some top end head machining work, and for them to guarantee their work, they were going to break down the engine, machine the heads, replace the rod bearing, rings, and perform any core work that needed to be done.. They gave me an estimated price of $5,000 dollars, and refused to assist me if they didn't perform all of the recommended work.. Realizing that the repair was going to cost more than the van was worth, I attained a 2nd opinion. The 2nd mechanic analyzed the problem and fixed the car for $160 dollars! The distributor had slipped and the timing needed to be adjusted. Additionally, he replaced the exhaust gasket and there was no need for any machining work of the heads, which only had 83,000 miles on the original engine. The Import Doctors, seeing that I had out of State plates, gouged me with inflated estimates of unnecessary work. This shop participated in unethical practices, realizing that I was from out of State and knowing that I was at the mercy of the shop. The difference between a $160 dollar repair bill and a $5,000 dollar repair bill is 31 times more! Think about it! Being from Houston, Texas, we call them like we see them and there is no way that I could ever recommend a shop that participates in unethical practices, gouges the customer, and is more interested in looking after there own self interest, rather than the customers. A transmission shop told me I need a new clutch. Another mechanic told me it was time for new brakes. I took my car to Import Doctors to get the work done, expecting to spend thousands. Import Doctors took a look at my brakes and told me they were actually in good condition and didn't need work. When the inspected the clutch, they found a fluid leak and a cylinder that needed replacing, but the clutch itself did not need replacing. Only $300 later, my car is running great! No more sticky clutch pedal and burning smell. The staff at Import Doctors are honest, knowledgeable, and friendly. They saved me a lot of money by doing only the work that was needed, and getting to the root of the problem. They made a loyal customer out of me. read more

My VW GTI (mk 6, 2012 manual PZEV) recently hit 100k miles. I looked in the area for a solid VW mechanic and found this shop based on great reviews. I am glad I did! I called explaining that I had done a poor job at keeping up on the maintenance schedule for the GTI and was experiencing a coolant leak. After discussing over the phone, I could tell immediately that they knew my car well. I took it in for an oil change and a complete inspection. Instead of the usual 12 point visual inspection most shops give, they texted me a 42-point inspection with photos throughout the underbody and full explanations of any problem my car was facing ranked from immediate repair to something to pay attention in the long term. I was blown away. Their prices were reasonable and fair for the work I requested and I scheduled with them the proper repairs and maintenance upkeep. I am very happy with the work completed and will definitely be coming back. Plus, it was fun to discuss the interesting mechanics of my car in the lobby while dropping off and picking up my car--great guys! read more

I've been taking my Acura to these guys since the manufacturer's warranty ended (about four years), and I've always come away feeling as though they had my best interest in mind. Great, honest service at a fair price and not afraid to refer my friends there as they do a fantastic job for any of my repair needs (timing belt, water pump, distributor cap and distributor replacment). I can do some of the repair work myself, but for stuff that would require more then 30 min to hours +, this is the only shop I go to in the Seattle area. I took my car here for an oil change, and they were great. The did the work in less time than they estimated, and sat down and told me what other issues would need to be addressed in the future (all normal wear and tear on my older car). I've been a customer for 20 years because 1) the prices are reasonable, 2) they don't try to sell services your car doesn't need (they monitored my Subaru's head gasket for several years and finally, at 202,000 miles, said it needed to be replaced); 3) like everybody, they are not perfect, but when they do make a mistake they fix it and make it right (they completely replaced a clutch they installed incorrectly the first time). 4) they are friendly, courteous, honest and accommodating. They've changed locations three times since I first started taking my cars to them. Their current location is not as convenient for me as their previous two locations but I continue to patronize them because they are so good. read more

I had some VERY negative experiences with Import Doctors. Basically, I give it 2 stars because they really are friendly, courteous, and the shuttle service is quick and convenient. However, the actual service done on my car was filled with costly and time consuming errors. Either they are extremely incompetent, or completely untrustworthy. Maybe my experience is not the norm, but here are 3 major issues I had in detail: Strike one: For my first visit, my wife brought in my Audi A4 for the Audi recommended 75k service, an oil change, and overall checkup. They told her it needed about $500 in "urgent" repairs and also suggested another $1000 repair item (engine mount?) that we declined. They also said the 75k service included the replacement of some hard-to-reach belt, which would cost around $2000 because of the extended labor. Before spending such a large amount on service, I did some fact checking: I called the Audi dealer about the 75k service, and they said that belt was not due for service until 100k. So I called back with this info, and they said that they had put in the wrong model # into the computer. Ok... so this is plausible mistake (Although that mistake nearly cost me $2000). They also said the 75k service was just an oil change basically (seemed much more hesitant to add things now that I knew what I was talking about). Because of the overwhelming positive reviews on yelp, I let this slide, had them do the $500 of urgent repairs (which I let them do completely on trust... the car was preforming fine and no lights were on). They also did the oil change, and one other thing which I'll explain next. Strike two: While I had the car in for the oil change/75k service, I mentioned we were also hearing a crunching noise when rolling up the driver side window. So they said they could take a look. I think they told me it was the window track, and the replacement price was reasonable, so I said go ahead. We get the car back and the window works well and without noise. 2 days later my wife tries the actual physical lock on the door for the first time (my key uses the remote, my wife's key doesn't have the remote), and the alarm goes off and doesn't open the door. So, since its the same door they had just worked on, I suspected they had broken something electronically inside the door when working on it. I brought it back in and explained (while trying not to be too accusatory), and they said the handle/lock mechanism needed to be replaced. I told them I thought they had likely broken it during the previous repair, and eventually they agreed to not charge me for labor (they acted like it was a big favor and that the door had broken on its own. I'm fairly convinced now that they broke it, but for the time being I thanked them and let it go). So they ordered the part (takes 3 days to get in), installed it, and I was in a hurry so I picked it up and brought it straight home. I tried my wife's key at home and IT STILL DIDN'T WORK. Alarm goes off, door doesn't unlock. Same exact issue. Now I'm pissed. Didn't they even try it after installing it? I call back, bring it back in AGAIN, and they tell me the new handle was a dud. Sometimes that happens... So they also happen to have access to another one (I think they said from a nearby partner shop), and they installed that one, which does work. Are you kidding me? I definitely felt lied to at that point. Why wouldn't they get the part from the neighboring shop in the first place? Why wait 3 days to order it? How did they get the "new" part so quickly? I'm starting to suspect they just put the old part back in and had the new part sitting in the box. Or literally just forgot to service it. At this point I decided never to use this shop again. Unfortunately, it's not over yet... Strike three: About six months later, we start to hear the window crunching again! Then, it will no longer roll up all the way. I bring the car to the Audi dealer, which is now my primary repair shop. They immediately explain the inter workings of the window mechanism in layman's terms, and based on the sound tells me its the window regulator that needs replacement. So all that trouble and money spent on the window, handle, window track, etc, was a total waste. What a nightmare! read more

Took my 2006 VW Passat to another shop to get an estimate on an emissions problem and was given a very high $$$. After checking Yelp I decided to check Import Doctors because of the positive reviews. Marco did the diagnostics and came back with a whole list of problems. I was prepared for it to be $$$$$ because of the estimate from the previous location on 1 issue and I now had 4 issues. Turns out he was more than $400 cheaper than the other place and doing more work! I expected maybe there would be workmanship issues but everything has been running great. This will be the shop for all my automotive needs as long as I have the VW. read more

I've been taking my 2011 Nissan 370Z to this place. From service intake with Ken Hahn to the technical talent of Antonio, there's nothing not to like about Import Doctors. Its location is convenient for anyone working in the downtown area--you have easy access to the transit tunnel to get back to the office and to return to pick up your car. If you are tired of the bureaucratic layers of the service departments of dealerships and their high-end costs of service and repair, you can do no better than this place. They are knowledgeable about all foreign cars from the luxury level to the ordinary wheels. (In fact, there is no longer a Nissan dealer in Seattle.) read more

The work that they have done recently has ben OK - nothing spectacular but I have been put off with the increased "slickness" of the operation. I had such a great experience today with the guys at the Import Doctors. I called this morning because my VW Passat's engine was making loud noises and they suggested I drop it off. In addition to having the problem fixed before the end of my workday for a reasonable price, they also replaced a brake light I didn't know was out for free. And fixed my front bumper, which had been popped out of place for a while. Also for free. I brought my 2006 Mini Cooper S JCW into the Import Doctor's for my 80K tune up a few months ago and also asked them to check out why one of the engine fans kept cycling on and off. The tune up went well and very happy with their work and the time Ken AND the mechanic took to go through the work done, findings, etc, but I still noticed the fan cycling. Ken was extremely gracious and asked me to come back so they could investigate further. When I came back, the mechanic was at a loss and recommended that I bring my car back so they could go into more detailed investigation. I was leaving for 2 weeks on vacation, so told them that might be the ideal time for them to have the car for a good length of time to figure out what was going wrong. Ken kept me up to date throughout the 2 weeks, let me know the findings, his recommendations and took complete ownership of fixing the issue and the mechanic went above and beyond by visiting mini online forums to find similar issues and resolution. Essentially when all was said and done, they did over $3K of work on the car due to the highly complex nature of the issue, but only charged me for the work that actually fixed the issue which came to about $300. Can't crow enough about the integrity of Import Doctors, their uncompromising commitment to quality and doing the right things by their customers. Went to the shop for diffuser removal and reflector installation, they gave me an estimation which will cost me around $100~, but after they got the job done, they charged me only for $40 wayyy better than expected. I've had a very good experience with the Import Doctors so far. On two different occasions I've taken my car by there to get some pretty major repair work done (around $1000 in total) and Marco has always been very helpful and upfront about everything. He checked my brakes for free after I noticed something funny the day after. Also he's been very understanding about the fact that I usually couldn't pick up the car the same day it was done (I'm not in Seattle during normal business hours). I'm not the type to give a place a 5 star rating unless they were absolutely exceptional, but I'd say the Import Doctors certainly deserve a 4.5. I will definitely be a regular customer. I brought my Audi Allroad in the other day to have some work done and was super impressed. I had a leak in one of my front air shocks which cost A LOT to have fixed by the dealer. They were willing to fix it using parts that I purchased, and had it done by the time I requested. Also, they didn't try and upsell me on other services that my car either did or didn't need, which was great. My car works great now and I will definitely be bringing it back for anything else it may need. read more
