Wow. What can I say about a waiter with zero personality that basically ruined the night had it not been for old friends gathering to meet. I got there at 4:15 to meet a group of ladies from high school. He basically ignored me until I had to flag him down. He was rude to my friends. Closer to leaving ... About three hours later he attempted to be nice but it was too late. Food was good and the other servers were so sweet. This has been one of my family's favorite places for years. We went for a joint birthday dinner last night and I can say it remains one if the best. My ex had the bangers and mash. One of their specialties. And the mustards they set with it are delicious too. My daughter tried duck for the first time. She gobbled that dinner up. And I had the trout social. Amazing. Everything was perfectly seasoned too. Not too much. Not too little. And it melted on my fork. Then they surprised us with little birthday ice creams. So unexpected. Places do t do that much anymore. We additionally got the flourless chocolate cherry cake. Amazing. Don't believe anywhere that says the have the best because it's here. But the best part was my chocolate mandarin sorbet. I can't say in words how good this was. As always the service is also very good here. From the moment you arrive until you leave. They also had a very good jazz band placing in the bar area that we could hear while we are in the dining area. I've eaten here many times. I have also taken friends here. And they all thank me. We came here for lunch the second day of my visit to DC. The place is dark and woodsy but with windowed-natural light too. The cuisine is definitely authentic Irish and any Irishman or Irishwoman would appreciate it! We came at an odd time in the afternoon, so it wasn't very busy. Server was nice but she was a bit slow on returning to take our orders - maybe shift change or something. Anyway, even though the food is a bit heavy for my usual dining-out experience, it was certainly well prepared and delish! And don;t get me started on the Bloody Marys they make! OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! Ive been going to the Irish Inn for a very long time. We love that there is a nice place in the neighborhood that has a decent bar and fantastic outdoor seating. I have nothing but great things to say. I'd like to add a personal note. This past week our dog was in the hospital and we didn't feel much like cooking. We went to the bar to pick up carry out food and had a drink while we waited. While we were there, we got the very bad news that our dog basically had 24 hours to live. We were both crying heavily right there in the bar. Not exactly everyone's dream customer and not exactly what every dream customer wants to do. Not one but just about every staff member who passed by us asked us if we were ok. The bartender comped us our drinks and was genuinely sympathetic. None of them had to do that. None of them had to care. But it made all the difference. The Irish Inn will make you feel like family. They remember you when you return. Any place that hires staff/bartenders that are both compassionate and kind is a place I will frequent forever. read more

Ay dios mio!!! The food is slacking a little bit but thats okay because the service makes up for it 100%. This beauty of a brunette hostess turned my frown upside down, Pia I think her name was. Super welcoming, I needed some happiness in my life because my poor ferret, Ferret Bueller had just passed away:( the waiters didnt say much.... but I could sense positive auras all around. I've grown tired of paying high prices for food I could make at home that tastes just as good, and with service that's more reliable. Mediocre at best. On St. Patrick's Day you'd think they'd bring their best, but it just fell flat. The menu was fixed and uninspired (average food, nothing memorable). My cold salad was served on a hot plate so the greens wilted. My second plate had cooked mashed potatoes under the rim. Silverware wasn't replaced and empty plates littered the table like party confetti. My dessert tasted microwaved to make it hot (the cake had a dried tough exterior like it was microwaved vs. warmed in a convention oven). The server was absent and had to be flagged down multiple times. After we ate, the check was a hostage victim and I had to ask for it. Throughout, various bus staff tried to rush the meal by asking if they could take the plate-- someone holding a fork and food left is a pretty clear indicator that one is still eating. Oh...and a manager (my guess based on their attire) yelled at a staff member in the hallway loud enough for a few tables to hear and grimace). So, for a $45 fixed fee, the expense didn't match the expected experience. read more

Had a birthday lunch for two friends who share a birthday on a rainy Sat. afternoon at 12:30pm. There were eight of us and they seated us in a room upstairs which was perfect because this group of women golfers has a great time and can be loud at times. I hadn't eaten at the Irish Inn in years and the food was terrific. Some of us had cod which was cooked to perfection, others soup and sandwiches and two of us had crab quiche with salad. Everyone raved about their food. I hadn't remember them having great food so was please and will definitely go back. The service was also very good. The service was really good and the atmosphere very pretty. It's not a cheap place (but then again look at the neighborhood). We ate in the dining room, although the bar looked inviting. It's not a spacious place, but rather more intimate. The bread? Brown bread not so good here. Appetizer... we did calamari and the crab and artichoke (the latter being forgettable). Early Easter Sunday dinner at the bar. Jazz trio playing well and, blessedly, unamplified. Rockfish special was very good, as were the salmon and the charred Brussels sprouts. Three problems: bartender never removed the 2 glasses used by the previous patrons, so we stared at a dirty wine glass and a cocktail glass the whole time. Second, and a real downer, the menu showed Green Spot whiskey at $12 or $15 [can't recall] but later I noticed the tab for it was $18. Not a way to bring business back! Patrons: check the check before you pay! Finally, the pungent smell of the cleaning materials used in the restroom wafted across the room every time the bathroom door opened. I love the Irish Inn for live music on Monday nights where some people come to dance. They have special on Mondays $6 Guinness and inexpensive oysters. I love shepherd's pie but it's a little bit on the pricey side. The food is decent quality but I feel it's a little bit higher priced than average Irish Pub. I love the atmosphere, the owner is a real Irish gentleman and he's very kind and welcoming to all his guests. I love the waitress and the bartender, and it's just an overall authentic Irish feel to the wonderful location it feels like you're not in Washington DC but rather some place in rural Ireland where everybody knows everybody's business and it's a real community. Went there for St Patrick's Day and it was fun overall, but a few things that stood out. It was packed, which was great! They offered complimentary valet parking which was key because the location is off Clara Barton Pkwy near Glen Echo and tough to find parking - in the lot and side streets. The average age at this establishment was roughly 55+, which is fine if you are in that age range. Being in my late 30s with friends, we were reprimanded (upstairs) via a whistle and yelled at across the room for being too loud?!? WTF!! This was absurd bc the table next to us admitted they were louder... Those people were cowards bc when we confronted them they had already closed their tab and on their way out and left without answering our questions. As for the menu for St Patrick's Day, it was only $45, for a 3 course option. When comparing the menu today versus the normal menu, it was inflated for the occasion. The Caesar salad was tasty and the Reuben was very good but all 3 dessert options were ehhh. Nothing to write home about. Nice whisky selection and beer as well. If we were to have ordered separate on the normal menu, the salad would have been 9 and the sandwich 16. Dessert could not have been more than 8. But it was St. Patty's Day and it is what it is. I'd like to try this place another time outside of the special occasion to have a second opinion. read more

Went with a group -- almost before we sat down, we were aggressively asked for our credit cards by the waiter. One member who had just brought cash was told he needed to provide a credit card to be served (this was resolved only after some discussion). Waiter was rude to the group. I complained to the manager about the waiter and the up-front credit cards demands and was told the latter was Inn policy because the kayakers sometimes don't pay. It's a shame, because the restaurant is in a good location (near prime kayaking and running) and the food wasn't bad. But until they treat their customers better, I'd stay away. Addendum: I have spoken to the manager a month later, and was told the waiter we had who seemed rude is no longer with the Inn. They said they would be sensitive about demanding that people give a credit card before ordering. Yelpers who go there in the near future may want to report on how they handle this issue. read more

We love the ambience, the atmosphere, and the decor. Those are all good things. The food is ... generally good. I personally tend to stay with the Irish pub grub, like fish and chips, or the beef stew and they have been very good. The scones are amazing! Some of the more ambitious dishes have not worked quite so well. My wife tends to try those and ... they're typically decent, but nothing special. Take a walk around Glen Echo park when you're done here, though, there's the Spanish Ballroom and a carousel and other interesting sights. read more

On 11/8, my husband and I bailed on our commute (which was terrible) and stopped by the Irish Inn, hoping to salvage the day. Thankfully, we were seated without delay! Our waiter, Francois was fabulous. His impeccable manners, friendly demeanor and subtle French accent helped settle our nerves as we ordered another sumptuous Irish Inn meal. The grouper was deliciously prepared and my husband ate every bit of it. My ribeye steak was prepared perfectly and I was so glad they put creamed spinach back on their menu as an available side dish. Lovely, attentive waitstaff lady, charming Scottish accent. Otherwise totally underwhelming. Tepid (as in not warm) Irish coffee (had been looking forward to robust Irish coffee to warm me up post hike). Also tepid roasted cauliflower, undercooked, unappetizing presentation. Hint: heat oven to 425 degrees, mix generous amount of olive oil with cauliflower florets, place on baking sheet (covered with aluminum foil optional), roast 30 minutes, turning occasionally 'til tender. Sprinkle coarse kosher salt, spices, e.g. cumin, coriander over cauliflower towards end of roasting process (in lieu of spices, grated parmesan). Finish roasting. Et voilà! Tender, caramelized, roasted cauliflower. When check arrived, I paid. Begrudgingly. I do feel rather badly about this poor review, my apologies. I'd really like to continue to patronize The Irish Inn but not if food prep is sorely lacking. read more

I second Ron W., although he is wrong about one thing: Glen Echo is not a "ghost town". The Irish Inn has the distinction of being the only restaurant within walking distance of the historic park's ballroom (which enjoys significant patronage each week due to all the dances being held there). The Irish Inn is the only place to go if you, for example, wanted to drink away the jitters before stepping out on the dance floor with a thousand other sweaty human beings. That being said, this is a privilege that the restaurant does not deserve. Neither the drinks nor the food are cheap, though the latter is so poorly executed that it is nearly a joke. The service was atrocious. I showed up about 10 minutes before the rest of my party. I was sat anyways, and the waiter walked by and said "how are you doing", and clearly did not care to hear the response as he walked right on by to a neighboring table. I would've like a glass of wine to drink while I waited...no such luck. Once my party got there, we finally got water and about 15 minutes later (after multiple "I'll be right with you"s from our waiter), we got some service. To be fair, the guy was swamped; his section was the small backroom and he had maybe 7-8 tables of differing sizes who all needed his attention. He got my order wrong and brought me a caprese salad (asked for the "tomato and mozzerella flatbread"). He apologized, took it away, then thoughfully brought it back "on the house" for me to enjoy, as the rest of my party was digging into their meal, and, well, flatbread takes more than just a minute to cook (unless they microwaved it...which they might've). Thanks, but no thanks. The caprese salad consolation prize was a little offbeat, with watermelon and cucumber in lieu of the traditional tomatoes to complement the shiny, chewy, flavorless rounds of mozzerella on the plate. The whole thing was drenched in some kind of foul, semisweet vinaigrette (green in color), and sprinkled with mint. It was like a schoolboy put it together at a picnic in a lame attempt to impress a cute girl. No nuance, just gimmick, total yuck. I gave it to the rest of the table to eat. My advice: stick with the original, get better mozzarella. That dish is really hard to screw up, but they managed. Finally, my flatbread comes out. The "tomato compote"? Marinara sauce. It was tomato compote in the way that a milky way bar is nougat pate with a chocolate ganache (tip: call a spade a spade). More of the awful chewy flavorless mozzarella. I ate half and was uninspired to eat the rest. The restaurant seems to do well with the older sect. Besides our table, there was not a single group that had anyone who appeared to be sub-50. As a result, it was reminiscent of the supper clubs that grandparents take us out to to show off their families; mediocre food, dark, dated surroundings. So it is my impression that the Irish Inn lives on by the grace of its location and familiarity among the people who live in the area. I'll be going there to get a drink before dances and nothing else, if I can help it. read more

We stopped in Saturday for Dinner. Honestly, I have to say it was beneath their reputation and the few times we have been in we have had a similar experience. The brown bread was stale, my wife's shepherds pie wasn't browned. My Prime Rib was nothing to write home about. The server disappeared and took forever to collect our plates. The food is good (although a little pricey), and the servers are very hard working. However, the managers seem very condescending and thoughtless with their employees and customers. I got the impression that they really didn't care about their customers that much. I heard some of the managers insulting them behind their backs. It made me really uncomfortable to be there, and I was constantly wondering if they were insulting me too. It's not just about the quality of the food, it's also about the experience. I felt like I was under pressure the entire time. Give it a shot I guess, but be aware that they're running a business. They're not your friends. read more

Had a lovely spring day experience here with excellent food and a great outdoor porch. Enjoyed curried chicken wrap with Andalusian gazpacho. Surprise was the word for my experience at the Irish Inn at Glenn Echo. I expected typical Irish pub grub. What I got was interesting and inventive dining. Salmon with a pumpkin salad accented with pumpkin seeds and acorn squash. A portabella tart topped off with goat cheese and a lovely salad on the side. Oh, and the bangers and mash. Delicioso. Home-made ice cream and a molten chocolate sour cherry cake. Wow. Add to this an incredibly beautiful and idyllic setting, and unbelievable service and you've got an escape from DC that ain't too far away. The house is really pretty and the free valet service is convenient even though it's not necessary. The parking lot is like 100 ft. square. But the valet men were nice. The inside is pretty too. The pub part is all dark wood and ambiance and there are enough Irish beers on tap to make the bar very "authentic Irish". We went there in March for our anniversary and it was pretty good. We sat in the dining room downstairs and the tables were kind of close together. The food was pretty good, and our waiter was Irish. Hard to understand sometimes but he was nice and attentive. He was really good about making sure our waters got refilled and I think he paid more attention to how much wine was left in the bottle than WE did. LOL The desserts were amazing in March. There was this warm lava chocolate cake with cherries in it that was incredible. We didn't get charged for it and the waiter said he told them it was hubby's b-day because they do that for birthdays but not for anniversaries, I guess. It was pricey, but we enjoyed it. That was in March. My mother-in-law was in town for a week and a half (from Ireland) so Jamie and I decided to take her on a tour of the "Irish" places we've been to since we moved here. We thought she'd like the Irish Inn. She did. As soon as we walked in she was talking about how nice it looked. Then we got our table and she looked at the menu. We ordered. We had a waitress this time and she wasn't anywhere near as attentive as the Irish guy hubby and I had the last time. It took at least 10 minutes to get water refilled and we were told twice that they were out of the wine we ordered from the wine list. The soup was okay but needed salt. Our salads (mine and MIL's) were drenched in dressing. Jamie's pasta dish was good but MILs fish and chips was overcooked and greasy and my shepherd pie was sort of eh. Okay. The biggest disappointment of the whole evening was the desserts. I don't know what happened between March and October but I'll remember that chocolate cake from March in my dreams.
