We decided to go there for our 25th wedding anniversary yesterday (07/12): This ended up being a truly disappointing experience for several reasons: -The cocktail glass was chipped which could have cut our lip. When we signaled this to our very inexperienced waiter, he did not replace the drink or offer compensation - The crab cocktail at $38 was pitiful: 6 tiny legs in a tiny sea of cocktail sauce - We did not get the amuse bouche that everyone else was getting. When we signaled this, we got a bowl with about 6 servings! -The grand marnier souffle is just for ONE contrary to what the website tells you. Imagine getting to the desert, and finding out there's only one desert! -No acknowledgement of our anniversary, even though the website asked if we were coming for a special occasion. -One waiter told us our waiter was very new. We reserved this French restaurant for our valentine's dinner. The restaurant reminds me of a classic old school establishment with wood furniture. We came here for NYE and there was quite the crowd. I liked the festive balloons and there was a lot of energy. I had never been here but it was fun to see that they were preparing a few dishes tableside. Looking at the menu, there was a variety of seafood and steak dishes. My husband opted for the salmon wellington (similar to a beef wellington) dish. We first shared the Iron Gate salad that came with bay shrimp, avocado and a delicious dressing. This was very generous! And it was very flavorful. The bacon and mushroom added flavor and texture that overall complemented the dish very well. I decided to try the steak flambe. YUM! This was super flavorful and it was perfectly cooked. The brandy sauce was made tableside as well. This all was just so perfect! I truly enjoyed the experience and our chef at the table. In my conclusion, this is a place for the long term Bay Area residence who are nostalgic about the glory days of Iron Gate. It's a pricey traditional French style restaurant, food is fine, but their casual but personal services is what most restaurants lack. The Iron Gate owner got this place in the 1930's and in 1940's, the Iron Gate was founded. It has its own parking lot, making it a bit safer than parking along El Camino. Most of the wait staff there worked for over 20 years, and the restaurant is famous for cooking flammable dish on carte tableside. If you see "flambe" on the menu, the dish will be cooked in front of you with high fire. There's a minimum $60 spend limit for each customer but the dishes are not cheap. So if you order an apertizer, an entree and a dessert, you will reach the limit and more. We ordered the La Maison Iron Gate salad for 2, which they mix the salad in front of us on a cart. It has feta, avocado, lettuce, bacon, mushroom and a chunk of tomato. I tried the Veal Jerusalem and it tasted good. The veal was pan fried and then added on a creamy sauce. Hubby tried their signature steak Diane. The meat cut was not thick and we asked for medium rare. The total cook time was about 3 minutes, they first seared the steak, then added all the sauces and brandy and let it cooked till thickened and then serve. After adding the brandy, a huge flame shot up and making it like a show. The store manager cooking for us said in a busy night they would be making 150 times of this dish. We were being served by 2 waiters. One of them was smart enough to ask if we wanted souffle for dessert so we don't have to wait long after entree. We ordered souffle for 2 of chocolate but was pleasantly surprised when it came as one chocolate and the other vanilla and that was decided by the sauce. the souffle came out very beautifully risen and jiggly. Each bite was soft and consistent and soaked in all the sauce. It was very well executed. After the entree, I was asked if we came for a special occasion and I told them I was one year wiser. The waiter then came out with a candle on top of my souffle and a happy birthday song. There was no free desserts but the nice conversations here and there carried the character of this restaurant. Waited for the host who took forever even though when we went, there were only 2 tables in this joint that looked like a shabby dining area where they try to sell you timeshares. Cold bread and meh butter. My steak was bland, and if it weren't for the compound butter, I would have asked for ketchup to get through this tough yet dull tasting piece of meat. It honestly reminded me of a Dennys' steak at triple the price. Don't even get me started on the horrible bland veggies and super salty mashed potatoes that tasted like they were squeezed out of a dollar store tube. My creme caramel tasted like it came from a cheap Safeway dessert pack, and my coworkers' fish was so small and thin that I thought they gave her a kids plate. A part of me was going to order their veal marsala for lunch, but at $42 dollars, I'm glad I didn't after I had their horrible steak. It's not worth the price. Definitely not good food. It's been quite a few years since we last visited The Iron Gate. Very lucky girl as I was gifted a gift certificate, so hubs and I decided to have a date night. Made reservations for a Friday at 6pm. We were greeted upon our arrival and immediately brought to a table. Hubs had been reviewing the menu and reviews prior to our visit, so he already knew what he wanted. We started with the fried zucchini blossom. For me, can't say there was much of a blossom, but it was stuffed with crab meat and i had to sop up all that yummy sauce with the bread. Next, the clam chowder - creamy and another good one for dipping the bread. Caesar salad made tableside - good flavor, but maybe could've used just a little less oil. We were then brought raspberry sorbet to clean the palate. As for the entrees, I went with the Veal Jerusalem. The veal was very tender, although alone it didn't really have much flavor. The veggies and rice had more flavor, especially with that sauce. Hubs ordered the bone-in ribeye - very flavorful and cooked perfectly medium rare. Night ended with coffee and the souffle with berries - fluffy souffle and the berries complemented it nicely. Service was very good. So it's Sunday night a week before Xmas week (need to get it done before we get busy following week when we need to fly over toy aunt's place for dinner) so it was the right time to-go there and try. I booked a reservation on OpenTable.com. There was a nice Solstice Santa Claus statue to greet us and make us feel Christmassy with typical American fare. The moment we stepped inside, the two front desk hosts greeted us and I gave them my reservation name - and not bad - I was impressed with the professionalism and accomodation. Had a nice warm feel and the bar area had good dim-lighting soft to the touch. Now the restaurant fireplace like design is something you gotta compliment as most modern American restaurants no longer retain that homely-fireplace feel and style but the Iron Gate definitely knows - and they know to retain that flare to accommodate its local San Carlos-Belmont demographic and community customers. The hosts were able to get me and my folks a seat at the dining area and we were also offered to wait at the bar area if we liked, but as we drove down from SF, yep - we opted to dine so we skipflight to the dining and were seated and accomodated by our waiter Miguel. Now where do I go with this next is rather unique and funny as for awhile me and my folks don't always find American style restaurants retaining the French and Italian flare as often anymore. Kudos to Miguel as our night was actually good so far. Miguel was very detailed with the menus and also the wine menu - presenting the customary wine menu of the restaurant alongside a seasonal wine menu (yes they do- believe it they got two wine menus, amazing) and then the service presentation was remarkably nice. We opted however to go with entrees and non-prix fix dinners because as Yelp showed it, the good stuff seems to be not on prix fix. So for wine, I ordered a bottle of Louis Jadot (Burgundian red wine) and for starters - We had Eacargot and Oyster Rockefeller-honestly I can't see how to go wrong with those (unless you got seafood allergy, might need to sign the disclaimer), the service so far - informative and you can tell the staff was dedicated and knew the restaurant, a super plus. Now escargot - it was good and rich in the butter and seasoning (that was piping hot on the metal plate) that was truly a delicious first and the garlic seasoning - gonna say went well when you want to dip the nice soft complimentary bread into something other than plain better - and the sauce was rich and flavorful. Nowww - did The Iron Gate follow up with consistency? - YEP- Mannn us three finished the entire five-six pieces of creamy cheese and spinach baked Oyster Rockerfeller and it was notch!! Lots of cheese (plus extra if you want to just spoonful it or bread it) and well enough spinach, yummm. As we looked around we definitely noticed that The Iron Gate was something not the same - namely-its clientele that was seated at tables around us were families, OGs, locals, mom and pops with their sons and daughters, and so you can tell when 2x+ tables of families were celebrating their birthday-The restaurant had consistency in order for customers to come back for years and years. This is a reliable place in Belmont-San Carlos and thus - I digress it earns that as a recommend. Now onto the Primetime Entrees - we ordered 3x dishes in time for holidays: the Sauteed Scallops and Prawns served with rice and vegetables. The Chicken Dijon served also with rice and vegetables, the remarkable one was the New Zealand rack-of-lamb served with mashed potato and vegetables. First off even my folks agree that the portions were decently sized and that's important as some folks want dinner filling and feeling well fed in winter a plus. The marinade sauce for the rack of lamb was rich and the meat we ordered at medium-well was right as we were gonna shar and my pops don't prefer the blood on the grilled meat (I don't mind) but I liked the rack of lamb was generous as they give seven pieces which is a decent helping. The chicken dijon was a decent size and well flavored and sauteed and so was the prawns and scallops. Overall - flavor level from umami 1.0-10.0 I would agree with a damn good 8.5 flavor rich. Good yet not overpowering. The steak diane we witnessed another table order - now that was unique as the dish is flame seared and cooled right in front of the guests - remarkable (not that many restaurants do that stuff anymore). So overall - good entrees and solid. Finally we move onto the dessert. Surprisingly we were also given small mini scoops of the lemon sorbet after our appetizer before our main course but really the souffle was solid way to end the meal. The chocolate souffle had a great liquer hint in the sauce and definitely yummm, and the berry souffle with gran-marniere sauce was nice and a hint of soft liquer. Nice way to end dinner - and a solid pallette. Overall, driving down to The Iron Gate for Xmas dinner did not disappoint. read more

We came here for our celebration dinner and picked this restaurant due to the mid-way location among our group. Really got a mixed feelings about this restaurant for the foods vs services. I love the services where the waiters greeted you and didn't rush us out until we felt like we wanted to go. They cooked the steak right in front of you and gave a little show which I enjoyed, but the smoke is also a bit too much. We ordered a variety of appetizers to share. Seared scallops, escargot, fried calamari and Caesar salad. Got to say that the scallop is a little disappointing and the escargot is not great neither. Too be fair, I didn't love escargot anyway but I am a scallop person but didn't quite like the scallop. Fried calamari is normal and I like the Caesar salad. I order the 10oz filet mignon and it came with garlic butter on the top, with mashed potato and a few mixed veggies. My steak is grilled right, medium rare, to my liking. The meat is very tender too. The only complain I have is really a bit dry, there should be some natural juice from the steak, but really none came out from slicing the steak. I also tried my friend's steak flambé (flambé is fire that they cooked the steak in front of you, brandy goes in to the cooking pan, throwing a fire), the sauce was pretty good to make a saucy steak. I had their pomegranate martini which is pretty good. Their coffees (everyone of us complained about the coffee at the end of the meal) taste and quality are just not there. The original soufflé is pretty good for dessert. They have three flavors (original, chocolate and mixed berry). My favorite is the original soufflé. You need to place your order at the beginning of your meal since it takes 30 min to bake it. Overall I enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and great services, but the foods could bring up a notch to better taste. We came here last night for my birthday. I had always heard many good things about this place & was blown away by the superb food, service, & ambiance. Our waiter was very attentive & did not rush us through our dinner. The bread is some of the best with a little butter. The appetizer of prawns in a white wine lemon garlic sauce is suculent & the toast crispy & flavorful. The perscuto with melon is some of the best with tender perscuto & fresh naturally sweet melon. My mother loved her asparigus salad with shrimp & hearts of palm; I had a little & will order it next time. For my entree, I had the steak Diane which they cook tableside; the wonderful aroma of olive oil, butter, meat, & all the accuterments (brandy, dejon mustard, werstashir sauce, & the flaming activity is a show & feast for the senses. It was all tender with potatos, coliflower, broccoli, & carrots. My mother enjoyed her filet of sul almondine 2with a lite cream sauce. For dessert, we had the gremlin & berry soufflee which was smooth, flavorful, & complimented well with fresh berries. The French martini was wonderful with vadca & chambord which made for a fruity & not too sweet number. The sorbet they gave us before our main courses was smooth & delicious; the perfect pallate cleanser. My mother enjoyed her glass of red wine. I capped off the night with an after dinner drink of a sweet white wine. This is an experience I will never forget & hope to make it back to try more. We hit this place up on New Year's and had a great time. We showed up and we hung out in the waiting area for about 15 minutes till we got our table while we were there we noticed the bar area, where people were having a great time. It's was an older crowd, a couple of young people sprinkled in and a DJ bumping some beats. I gotta admit, they were playing some good music! If you haven't been to a French restaurant, I would suggest this place, to break you in. It is not too fancy, but definitely fancy enough, so dress up. Like I said, expect an older crowd in the dining area as well. But at the end of the day, who the hell cares, as long as the food is good. The service here is phenomenal and there is also table service for certain things on the menu. That being the chicken flambé and be ready for the flames. Unfortunately, I don't remember the chicken plate. My girlfriend had but I knew she was happy as hell with it. I had the special, which was the ribeye steak. You better believe I enjoyed some of it the next day. Above all, the girlfriend and I welcomed in the New Year, having a good time with other restaurant goers and the staff. I'm so sure that they're not and usually I wouldn't order chicken at a restaurant because they usually come out dry. But I thought a well established, expensive, restaurant like this would have a decent chicken. It was... decent... it was okay but it was slightly dry - as expected. I was TOLD. INSISTED UPON by the members in my party to get a chocolate soufflé. I shared with another member of the party and thank god because I hated it. I am not a fan. I took my parents out for a Valentine's Day dinner here last night, and the food and service were simply outstanding! We had the caesar salad prepared table side, sole meuniere, chicken with jerusalem artichokes, and rib eye steak. All prepared beautifully. If you like old school fine dining with incredible service and white table clothes then this is the place for you on the peninsula! There are not too many of this fancy dining establishments on the peninsula and this one is my favorite. Came here with my wife to celebrate our wedding anniversary without the kids and it was a fantastic dining experience. We came for lunch (they have a great lunch special that most tables were ordering) but we were able to order from their regular dinner menu as well so we went with that since it was a special occasion for us. We were the center of attention in the dining room since we ordered their table side cooked dishes. What a show! But it was not just for show because the food itself was also very deelish! The service was also very friendly and impeccable. Very fine service without being stuffy. The first room you see when you enter the resaurant is dark wood decor bar room and next to it is a very elegant and brightly lit main dining room which is where we dined. This is what we ordered and everything is recommended: Asparagus fried appetizer (this was not on the menu but the waiter highly recommended it and glad we got it) Escargots (deelish and the juices were perfect to dip the yummy bread into) Steak Diane flambe (this is their signature dish and I can see why. it was very tender, flavorful and moist) Veal flambe (it was good but not as good as the steak Diane which was more tender) Banana foster (another flambe and need to eat this fast because the warm bananas melt the ice cream) We'll be back again even for the lunch special but for sure for another special occasion when we want to stay close to home. Five of my buddies and I had dinner on Saturday night to celebrate a birthday! What an amazing evening it turned out to be! Our waiter Amir had a wonderful personality! We listened to the specials that evening and decided on the bone in rib-eye medium rare for a couple us and the others decided on the steak Diane which turned out to be fantastic! The owner of the restaurant, Kevah, turned out to be our cook. He prepared the steak Diane at our table. It turned out to be quite a show with flames shooting up in the air because of the brandy! We chatted with him while he was preparing dinner. He told us there was 3 original partners of the Iron Gate, two had retired and was the last of the 3 for the past 36 years! All in all it turned into a memorable time! Thanks again to Kevah, Amir and the rest of the staff at Iron Gate for wonderful time! read more

The food was good. Service was good. Ambience was a little loud this restaurant. Been there a long time it's a little overpriced, but the quality is there. read more

Escargots were really good! Tender and delicious, cooked in herb butter and served in the shell with a lemon wedge on the side. My husband and I were not shy about dipping our bread into the buttery drippings. We both ordered medium-rare bone-in ribeye served with a generous pat of garlic butter on top and small side of veggies. The steaks were $65 each and enormous! The steaks came out perfectly seared on the outside, pink and warm on the inside. Even the veggies were delicious. Thick slices of potato looked roasted on the outside, and were buttery and tender when bitten. Enfin, we shared a soufflé Grand Marnier with berries. The soufflé was perfectly timed. Warm, fluffy, tall. For me, the liqueur taste was too strong, but for my husband he said it was maximum flavor without being overpowering. Everyone's palate is different. Our experience was not quite five stars. When we were first seated at the table, our server asked what we would like to drink before we had the chance to look at the menus. We said we would need to think about it. In that same moment, he unloaded the list of specials--appetizers, entrées and desserts. I was still placing my coat on my chair. We felt rushed because we had just sat down. After that, the evening got better. Plates were timed perfectly when they came out. The presentation of the butter served with the bread was weird--it looked like someone cut 1 tbs portions from a butter stick and placed the pats haphazardly on a plate. The butter was still cold and hard to spread. It was strange that the diners were packed in so tightly together in one area. There was a woman seated directly behind me, and the backs of our chairs bumped multiple times during the evening. There was a table for two seated so close beside us, it was virtually a table for four. I dropped my purse during the evening and had to take care not to bump into the gentleman beside me while retrieving it. Still, I would come back to try the other plates! Plates coming from the kitchen looked very beautiful and appetizing. I would say the food is worth the price. read more
