Location is a definite improvement over their old one on SE Division. The downtown location is notably more upscale. the lounge area is awkward however. feels like more of an afterthought. If it's early, service can be inattentive. But I'm never in a hurry. Escargot are decent, but much better at Riverhouse. The madeira sauce gives them the edge over there. Calamari was oversalted for my taste. in general, older crowd here. if quieter dining is your thing, this might be your spot. read more

This is a 4-star experience, and that's still pretty darn good. We went on a Tuesday and found it quite busy. Our server, Doug, had an awful lot of tables but did a good job being attentive. Burrata salad was mildly disappointing, but the duck was exquisite. The pork osso bucco has great flavors despite being a bit drier than expected. My boyfriend and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary here last night. Hands down the best meal I have ever had and the best service either of us had ever experienced. We are young so we often feel out of place when we go out to a fancy dinner but we were treated so well by our server, Cheyenne, and the other diners who bought us glasses of champagne. We visited Bend for a week and were given a recommendation by a couple sitting next to us at a bar. We had dinner there the next night. The muscles were fabulous, the ceasar was great, the gnocchi appetizer was decent (not great), the lamb was undercooked, but good otherwise, and the andouille sausage pasta was fine (not great). The service was nice. The atmosphere was strange in a way but I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it was how the restaurant was set up. It had an awkward feel, but they just used the space to the highest and best use. Unfortunately, the patron sitting next to us had on so much perfume (in addition to the fact that the tables are so close to each other) that we had to box up our food and leave quickly. If we lived in the area, we would probably give it another try, but we live 6 hours away! read more

We went to dinner to celebrate a friends birthday. Our waitress was lovely and service was fantastic. The escargot was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed the duck. This is my go-to fine dining restaurant in Bend. When we want to take guests out or just recommend a place to friends, you are assured of quality, consistency and a hearty "thanks for recommending that place". Because it's chef owned, the food is always spot on. The service is friendly and knowledgeable. No small feat in this world of slow, sloppy and untrained servers. There's even a slick little bar in front of the house, that serves a great martini and I highly recommend the escargot appetizer as well. We showed up not knowing what to expect. Most restaurants in Bend have seasonal outside seating on the street in front of the restaurant. The exterior of this restaurant is very low key. When we entered I was surprised by the beautiful and tasteful formal interior space. White table cloths adorned the nicely separated tables. We chose to eat outside in the large rear of the restaurant. The space is nicely lighted and warmly filled with greenery. The wait service is attentive and knowledgeable. The food is delivers in taste and presentation. Frankly, I don't know why this place isn't sold out nightly. Until word gets out, I will simply enjoy. read more

I don't come here often preferring a more causal pub type atmosphere, but when I do I'm never disappointed. We have always made reservations and never have had to wait for our table. The food is beyond good. I ordered duck with a cherry sauce, mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. Our reservations were for seven and they were already out of schnitzel (October Fest). My husband had the cioppino; one of his favorites. The food presentation was eye pleasing without that hoity-toity over the top. I also enjoyed a field of greens salad with a pear vinaigrette dressing. Not my favorite dressing; I found it weak needing a stronger flavor. Have been here before with friends that frequent the place somewhat regularly and the food and service was good. However, can't say the same right now. Food was bland and service not so great (our waitress seemed like she felt way above us and pretty much ignored us for most of our meal). Love love love Jackalope Grill. Our favorite server, Chris, is drolly entertaining and super competent. (And how great is a restaurant when you actually have a favorite server?) The wine list is deep and has many yummy surprises at great prices. The yaeger schnitzel is the stuff of dreams. Husband had a salmon dish there a year ago that he still talks about. Dining room is comfortable with just enough elegance to make you feel very special and also very much at home. Oh, and just ask about the lengths they go to in order to serve what is by far the best bread in Central Oregon. Don't let the strip mall location throw you off... Absolutely divine! From service, food, to ambiance. Their menu is as sustainable and local as possible, always cooked to perfection. The specials menu will have treats like Elk, and veal, so check out their website to see the nightly specials. Even so, the lamb chop and osso bucco on the regular menu are the best I've ever had. There is not a better, more intimate or romantic spot in central oregon for date night. I think it's also safe to say it's one of the only true boutique restaurants Bend has to offer. If you really enjoy a medley of flavors when you dine, you will love what this husband and wife team serve. My wife is a gourmet chef in her own right and that makes it difficult to eat out where most restaurants tend to fall short. Jackalope Grill went way beyond our expectations. We met friends for retirement dinner here last evening. Started with moscow mules in the lounge which were fresh and tasty. The ambiance was great with the right amount of lighting and an eclectic arrangement of music setting the mood. Unfortunately there was only one other table with patrons the entire evening. Not sure it was because it was mid week, we were soon to learn as our celebration continued that this was a total loss to anyone whom has not tasted the food here. The grilled romaine was absolutely wonderful. The soup du jour, a creamy Potato soup was delicious and different twist of seasonings. Top notch filets, ribeyes and pork chops cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. Finished the night with best creme brulee I ever tasted. The wait staff were very friendly and helpful through our entire 3.5hr celebration. Thank you Jesse for letting us linger until almost closing time. We are so glad to have found this place. The Jackalope Grill - French Near Me - Bend, Oregon

I was initially turned off by the name Jackalope Grill. I've eaten at several mediocre Jackalope bars and grills throughout the West usually featuring a stuffed "Jackalope " over the bar. Good news! This restaurant redeems the maligned Jackalope. A near downtown location, the restaurant has an intimate "date night" atmosphere. Interior is enhanced by interesting art, well selected music and beautiful garden dining. Great selections of wine, beer, cider and mixed drinks. Our service, unlike notes in a few other reviews, was efficient and friendly. The prices were on point for a restaurant of this quality. Portions were large! Now the cuisine: The sensibility was French. The chef is American, trained in France, The menu was quite diverse, reflecting Continental/American tastes. The quality of the meals we had was superb! I had the Crisp Jager (Hunter's) Schnitzel, my favorite, with a rich mushroom sauce. Served with sides of sauerkraut (impeccably crunchy), red cabbage, and a potato pancake lost somewhere below the plate sized schnitzel. Polished off with a light chocolate pot au creme. My wife had the special lightly grilled salmon, fresh, juicy and not over cooked. Her sides were lightly steamed vegetables, carrots, broccolini, and fingerling potatoes - perfect! She opted for the delicious German Chocolate cake. This review sounds like a German menu, but remember Alsace Lorraine is the home of some of the best restaurants in France. We traveled all over Oregon and Washington for 2 months and this was the best dinner ever, ever anywhere. We stayed at the RV park down the street and picked up a menu flyer. It looked good, so we decided to go for dinner. It turned out they were closed on Mondays, so we extended our stay for another night just to try it. We sure were glad we did. The food was done to perfection. I had the Rack of Lamb. It was to die for. My wife had the Pork Tenderloin. And it was tender. We shared an appetizer of Oregon Elk Medallions. Superb. For desert, we split the Peach Bread Pudding. It came with what seemed like homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. We don't normally eat desert, but this was great, each bite a treat. we have eaten here many times. We started when we saw Tim win the Bites of Bend contest in 2011, and have been coming back regularly. At first we did not get it, and thought the service was slow and disinterested. Instead, we learned that they are intent on you really enjoying your table and they do not try to rush you out. I think that is good, and we go there when we have a special event, because we can indeed take the table for a while and enjoy. the wine selection is one of the best in town, and it is diverse and has many layers. you can get a great wine here and not have to pay an arm and a leg. I will say that I think they tend to overcook their red meats by one click. Knowing that, order one shade light. their crab stuffed mushroom appetizer is a delight. every time they have rack of lamb it comes to our table. Tim has a veal recipe that is his signature dish. we like it there. read more

I was in town for one night for business as I passed through. This place looked good from the reviews and was the closest from the double tree so I walked over to it. As I walked in 17 minutes before closure I expected to be maybe told they would be closing soon. To my surprise one of the owners was enjoying a glass of wine and bar staff were in the bar so I thought great quick bite and go. No such luck, I was told they were closed by a female bartender and had been since 8:00pm not the posted 9. I get slow nights but that was crazy early. I tried to call after I had to leave and was told that no management was available. As soon as I said I will be posting a review on yelp of my experience she quickly told the owner was available. He tried to make excuses but it was to late to save the day. I highly recommend not going there. I ended up at J-Dub. Had awesome service and great food. read more

We had a great dinner in a restaurant that I personally had in my list to visit. Great food, and nice ambience. Waiting for our food we really enjoyed watching the decor, it was our first time and to be honest our plan wasn't going to be this restaurant not at least for this weekend, but it was hard to find parking so we ended parking at the garage and it was very convenient just walking to this restaurant so we changed our plans instead of Thai food we decided to have French food even though I had Pisco sour which is a Peruvian national drink, Jaeger Schnitzel which is German however I know there are different versions in different other countries. My Pisco sours were good but then was great when I requested with Lime juice instead of lemon. Our waiter Jesse was attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu recommending the specials even when they were out, I guess I have to come back for the Duck confit. Very convenient as we were staying at the DoubleTree in Bend and it was less than 3 blocks away. We went their on a Saturday night our 6th wedding anniversary, and my husband mentioned it was our anniversary. The food was good but the service was slow. We had to initiate ordering everything. We were not asked if we'd like another cocktail or glass of wine, we had to ask for this. We ordered the summer kale salad, Caesar and gnocchi to start. The kale salad was really good and I liked the dressing a lot. Caesar was good-- a lot of cheese which we like :) Gnocchi was ok-- way too much marinara sauce. I had the filet mignon and ordered it rare. I told the waitress I like a nice sear on the outside then very rare. When I cut into it, it was cooked almost all the way through and my husband said something to a nearby server. She then questioned me on how I ordered it and if I cut it all the way through. I thought that was rude. If a customer says it's not cooked right, take them at their word. The new steak was ok and cooked right but swimming in too much beurre blanc. My husband got the tombo risotto which I wish I had ordered. I ate most of his dinner while waiting for my steak to be re-made and it was really good! I will say however that the cocktails were phenomenal. I got a Hibiscus Fizz and Pisco Sour and both were very tasty! I was surprised that our server said nothing to us about our wedding anniversary, even to say congratulations, but a table nearby celebrating a birthday got a happy birthday with a candle! I would come here for drinks only but not to eat and definitely not for an important dinner. Also, there was a typo on the menu. It was talking about how their fish is really eco-friendly because they are caught in "inefficient" fishing vessels. Clearly they mean efficient. Wanted to love this place. Really wanted to love this place! After hearing so many wonderful things about the Jackalope, we finally made a reservation for a special occasion and went in with pretty high expectations, which were sadly shattered. First, after were seated by the owner who was very nice, we sat at least 10 minutes without a greeting from our server, water, OR menus. Finally she stopped by, with water-but still no menus-those came about 5 minutes later. We were able to catch her and mention that we would like to start with drinks-she ran away instead to grab us bread? When she came back with the bread, we placed our drink and appetizer order- then she promptly whisked away our menus before we had a chance to realize what she was doing! Amused ourselves by trying to remember what we had seen during our quick glance-over-what went with the pork? Apple cider reduction? Or was it Balsamic? Our server returned to take our entree order-by the way, do you have any specials?( this is usually something mentioned when menus are dropped) She mentioned a couple appetizers we may have been interested before we placed our app order! soup of the day, and highly recommended the filet and the lamb on the menu(which we did not have in front of us). I ordered the seafood pasta, and my boyfriend ordered the lamb she recommended. " Oh yeah. We are out of lamb." Okay... we finally got a menu back and were able to make a suitable second choice. Then, wine arrived. Not sure where the confusion came from here, and perhaps this was my own fault-but I thought I had ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir, instead, we were served 2 glasses of white? We told her we had meant the red, our server says they don't have that currently but recommended another kind, and we go with it- again, she brought us glasses, though red this time. My thinking is that the same makers of the Noir must make a Gris which they serve by the glass there and she wasn't aware of the bottle- the wine list is pretty extensive and probably tough to memorize and maybe I wasn't specific enough, so we decided to not say anything else, it was beginning to feel pretty futile at this point. After we finished dinner, our wine glasses empty, plates pushed to the side, we waited a good 15-20 minutes for our server to check on us, even though she was standing 5 feet away making conversation with another table. We finally were able to pay, and left feeling like we had one of the strangest service experiences we have ever had here in Bend! I will disclose that I also work in the industry, and therefore I am pretty forgiving when it comes to s**t happening, but this was pretty bad! Maybe this was just a fluke since other people seem to love this place so much, but I can say with confidence we will likely not return. On a positive note- I will say that the food was very good. Dungeness crab stuffed mushrooms, grilled asparagus with pancetta and egg, Schnitzel with traditional German sides, and Seafood pasta, no complaints in this department! read more

I really hate the name Jackalope for a serious restaurant. So much so that I have resisted going to this restaurant for many years. But my wife prevailed upon me to attend one of their prix fiixe dinners for our anniversary. It didn't start out well when the Jackalope canceled the prix fixe dinner at the last moment. When we showed up for our reservation, they apologized for the last minute cancellation and seated us in an outdoor courtyard. It was surrounded by plants and flowers that provided a fantastic atmosphere. Our server promptly provided us with glasses of prosecco for our anniversary along with some really good freshly baked bread, a really nice touch. Another plus is that they have several of Bend's better microbrews available on tap, which is something that better restaurants are beginning to do. My wife described her roasted beets with burrata on a bed of arugula the best salad/appetizer she has ever had. My Caesar salad salad was presented in a unique way - a square structure built of dressed leaves and topped with a Parmesan crisp, all delicious. My wife's Osso Bucco was served atop polenta, all good to very good but not to die for. Meanwhile, I thought that the Jaeger Schnitzel was very good, but I was disappointed in the potato pancake, which was mushy and not obviously a pancake. It was served with a small amount (darn) of outstanding red cabbage and broccolini, also really good. To sum up, really nice atmosphere, good service, and mostly really good food. I am stingy with "Excellent" or "5 Star" ratings, but this one is close to that. But I still hate the name Jackalope for a restaurant as good as this. read more

Normally, I would give this restaurant five stars. But not tonight. The service was sketchy and I suspect that they were short staff. My wife had the Thai Skate dish off the special menu but unfortunately it came with garlic, mashed potatoes not the jasmine rice that was listed on the menu. The waiter didn't make it back around to check on the meal until we were finished. When he asked how it was she pointed to the pile of potatoes left in the center of the plate and asked about the missing Jasmine Rice. Embarrassed, he agreed that it should have been rice. For a mistake like this on a dish, it would have been appropriate to comp a desert or drink to leave the customer feeling a little better about dropping this kind of money on a dinner that was less than the best effort. read more
