One of the few places in town that takes reservations, treats you as an adult (i.e., no stupid bar tables with tall stools), and provides a quiet social atmosphere centered around the food experience (not a TV). I just deleted my original review, but I am keeping the two star rating. The food was very mediocre. Evidently, my review hit a nerve, as I have now been contacted and insulted twice for it. I received a yelp private message that used profanity towards me on Sunday morning right after I posted it. I then received a long voicemail this afternoon from an employee of the restaurant that told me I was a "sad" person. Nope, I'm not sad - just a foodie who was not happy with her food and won't complain in a restaurant for quality issues that should be caught by the manager, chef, etc. Of the 6 items we ordered, one was good. We were then seated with a glass of water before a waitress came to get a drink order,waited another 15 minutes before drinks came. Fantastic food. Loved the beet salad and the chicken impressed me (not a seafood eater and try to eat on the lighter side when traveling mid-week). Would return in a heartbeat. Great outdoor seating in their courtyard for those of you in Bend during the fantastic summer months when evenings are warm (although they do have heaters evenly placed throughout for shoulder season/cooler evenigns). Patio also highlights all the planters with flowers and herbs that they use to finish the dishes- unique touch that I've never seen presented in this manner. My husband and I went to Jackalope based on the Yelp star rating and a couple of good reviews. After spending several days in bend we found it very welcoming as a bi-racial couple until this experience. Upon arrival we were given a chilly welcome by an employee who chose to leave us standing at the hostess station while she presumably went to find a hostess to seat us in the primarily empty indoor dining area (only 2 other people seated in this space). We were then promptly seated but left without a menu or anyone attending to our table for roughly 10 minutes. Another waiter asked if we had been taken care of, we told him no, he left to get help and in a few seconds the individual who gave is the chilly welcome stated to us that we had not been sitting that long. I responded by telling her we would like to see a menu. She corrected me stating that the waiter would bring it when he got to our table and again retreated to the back. My husband and I looked at each other, he said "let's go", I agreed and we got up and walked out. I can't speak on the quality of menu items or even the quality of the water because we were never provided any, nor can I be certain if it was just a horrible employee who has no idea how to provide even the basic minimum in good service or if it was racism. I'll leave that alone, however I will choose to stay away from this establishment at all costs. read more

The restaurant was recommended by some locals and we found it on Yelp with good reviews and a creative menu. Granted, if we had stuck to the more traditional fares we would probably would have had a different experience. The daily soup was rather salty and we had a special of monk fish wrapped in bacon and found it woefully disappointing. The combination of the two with the risotto struggled to present any kind of dominating flavor. The bacon slices were rather thick and just got "lost". The crab filled mushrooms were served hot but flooded with butter and once again any flavor got lost. The highlight of the evening was the chocolate pots de creme. It was flavorful and the chocolate had a distinct taste. The only down side to it was it appeared to be covered in canned whip cream indicated by the oily sheen to it. We had no wine with our meal which came to $90 and felt like we could have had a much better culinary experience for a whole lot less money at a different restaurant. read more

My wife and I were looking for a place downtown on a Sunday. And while they advertise they are open till 9:30 Sundays, we rang them up at 7:45 to tell them we were heading in. No answer. We arrived at 8, and while a few people were still at tables, they told us they were closed. Given the lousy reviews on service here, not a big surprise, but I wouldn't bother trying them. read more

The one star is not for food but service from the hostess. Well we had reservations for tonight but there is a really bad snow storm that we had driven in earlier and was scary dangerous so we decided to cancel our reservations for later tonight so I called to cancel and the lady who answered said, "oh the party of 7" and hung up on me before I had a chance to apologize and reschedule for another night. This was very rude and unprofessional on her part to cut me off while I was talking. We are visiting family from out of town and eat here whenever we are here and that won't change. This place is 70s upscale dinning at its best. Lots of butter and cream. It advertises as American (new). It is not new. It is 70s. So if you liked the 70s this is your kind of place. It looked like there were many happy diners there. Not our kind of place. They do make an effort though. It's just a matter of taste. As a place that appeared to be upscale the scotch list and wine list was a little on the low end, which is ok, but I would have expected a few upper end selections to round out the list for those so inclined. read more

We have been looking forward in trying this restaurant. It was a disappointing dinner. Starting with their Caesar Salad, the romaine lettuce was pale to white in color. Not the green crispy leaves they should have selected. Dressing was noted to be homemade, it was thick and squeezed on leaves. Toasted parmesan cracker was cold not warm as noted in menu. The vegetables had so much salt that they were not eatable. I love salt so this was a shocker. Their roasted herb chicken was great. Chicken was moist and herb flavors roasted through. For dessert, Creme Brûlée. It The consistency was thick institutional egg pudding. No vanilla flavor either. Our other entree was small piece of Salmon with soba noodles and mushroom was also too salty. Soba noodles did not compliment the salmon. Wine selection was not impressive. I was disappointed in both our meals. I will not be going back. Many other great quality restaurants to select from in the area. read more

We had terrible time even finding the restaurant due to the signage. We were greeted in a rather surley manner when stating our difficulties. The menu was limited. I ordered the prawns and chickpea fries appetizer. The prawns were over cooked and four fries was so very cheap. My husband ordered steak and fries. The mound of fries was overwhelming, no veggies, steak okay, not melt in your mouth. I think we will find another place to eat. read more

19 people, birthday celebration (reservations) first time at this restaurant and everything went ok (not great) until it came time to pay the bill. The actual Owner refused to separate the bill and would only take 3 credit/debit cards for 19 people, leaving it up to all 19 to separate the bill. This left the majority of the group scrambling for ATM's. Being the owner, she stated it's policy and refused to budge even though she's the owner! She was vulgar, rude and indignant to us. We were a diverse group, older, younger,life long Bend residents and had friends from Washington and Canada. The very vocal reply from the owner was she didn't care if we or anyone we knew ever came back. We were absolutely shocked. Well, guess what, we'll honor her wishes and none of us will come back. There's too many great places in Bend to waste time and money on the Jackalope grill. read more

This was our second choice. We tried to get in to Trattoria Spandati but they were booked. The service was not that great. The server barely smiled or conversed and it was not that busy. Perhaps the waitress was having an off night, but she was not very friendly. The food was okay, my wife had the spinach salad and my appetizer was the Warmed Sun-Gold Tomatoes on Grilled Bread, the best dish of the night. For diner my wife had the St. Moritz Schnitzel and I ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel. The Jaeger was too sweet and overcooked. The St Moritz was better but too was overcooked and nothing that made you want to get up and scream for joy or return and order it again. The food was NOT worth the price. They lose a star for the service and a star for the price and a star for the overall taste of the food. Not likely to return. read more

Saturday night we had the pleasure of, perhaps, our 6th visit to the Jackalope Grill. It is always a treat. The service is impeccable, the food was mouthwatering and there is always a great selection of wine. We enjoyed an appetizer, main dish and dessert and each was perfect! First visit to the new location last week. When we walked in there we two, two tops in the place and the hostess seemed bent out of shape that we didn't have reservations. Server very friendly but hopelessly slow on all fronts. Worst thing of all was the entree-A mushroom risotto with grilled sturgeon-So much lemon in the risotto that the creamy goodness that is risotto was destroyed. Fish tasted as if it was bathed in swamp water prior to cooking. Like the new location and look of it but won't ever go back. My wife was super excited about the filet, as in the past it has always been amazing-this time she guessed that she must have gotten a sirloin. Highly disappointed in the experience. read more

We decided to try the Brunch that Tim Garling is now offering. He has never disappointed us. This is not your usual brunch faire. We started with cocktails - Mary, Mary (spicy) and an Italian greyhound - well made. Next we had the Avocado Toast #1 (Whole grain toast with butter, olive oil & sea salt) as an appetizer. Very tasty. One had the Benedict - not too much sauce and just great roasted potatoes and the other of us had the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Arepa - bacon, egg,cheese all on an arepa (Arepa is made with ground maize) - a little bit of spice but just right. Already planning our next brunch to try some of the other tasty items. The service is simply wonderful - makes one feel at home. Great job everyone! read more

My wife and I just finished dinner at the Jackalope Grill on February 15, 2012 and it was excellent. From the moment we arrived the service was attentive, but not rushed. We started with a glass of Terminal Gravity served in a chilled Pilsner glass and a ceasar salad. The ceasar salad was excellent, one of the best we have had. The warm bread accompanying the salad was was out of this world. I aSteak I had was the best one I have had in a restuarant in the 2 1/2 years I have lived in Oregon and as good as any I can remember ever having in a restuarant anywhere. The meat was tender juicy and flavorful. I ordered it medium rare. My wife had the Seafood Pasta and she absolutely loved it. We both followed dinner with decaf coffee and it was full flavored and rich as full strength coffee. I had the creme brulee which I had heard was excellent and I was not disappointed. We both give the jackalope five stars on service and quality. We will definitely be returning to this restuarant. read more

Where do I start with this one. Ok, we're from out of town and visit Bend multiple times a year, each time we go to The Jackelope for a great dinner. So we booked reservations for 10, but only 8 could make it, the women who greeted us was very annoyed and rude by this because they had to remove one of the tables, I finally had to ask her sternly "is this a problem" cause we'll go somewhere else. Then I saw her walk into the kitchen area shaking her head and begin to talk shit, no doubt about us! Then the food came, my bolognese was dry and not as good as Pastini's by the river. My mothers pork osso was also dry and boring. The fish dish with risotto was flavorless and also dry. My wife ordered the hanger steak salad, it came rare when she ordered medium, they took it back and it returned still rare, it had NO flavor to the meat, we retuned it. We were all surprised at the lack of quality, another one bites the dust, and it used to be so so good. read more

My husband and I had not been to Jackalope Grill for about a year but last night decided to celebrate our anniversary there. What a wonderful meal we had! Rain unfortunately prevented us from being seated in the beautiful courtyard garden area, but we were given a prime table indoors next to the garden window. We had a warm, attentive and competent server--much better service than I remember from prior visits. And the food was magnificent. We started with the calamari, done in a light batter that tasted exquisite; I was tempted just to keep ordering calamari as my entire dinner. Next I had the buratta/beet salad, which is a "best of breed" in the world of salads, I think. The combination of the meltingly soft cheese with texture contrast from the beets, and the melding of their flavors on the palate, is really great. For our entree my husband and I both had the veal saltimbocca. It was a first time for us eating a dish we have heard about for years and we were really happy with it. The veal was tender and the sage was so fresh that we believe that must have been what we watched being harvested by a kitchen staff person about 10 minutes before the dish appeared before us! The accompanying polenta was tasty and the kitchen did a really nice job on the roast veggies, especially the carrots, that came with. We were pleasantly surprised by a complimentary and delicious chocolate pot de creme in celebration of our anniversary as a finale. Yes, this was overall an expensive meal but it could not have been a better meal. We will not wait so long before returning next time. We heartily recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion. read more

Thought I might try someplace new that I hadn't been before. The Jackalope Grill "seemed" nice enough until I sat down...I waited entirely too long for the less the polite waitress to offer me something to drink. The attitude was that of someone bothered by having to serve me. Still willing to write this off as a bad night for the staff I ordered my meal. The food was descent, but truly not for the price or the atmosphere. Still willing to write this off as a learning experience, and a place I probably would not return to any time in the near future, I was in total shock as I witnessed whom I believe to be the owner dealing with a patron who was obviously there for a party, event, gathering with friends or whatever. It appeared the gentleman in charge of his large group was discussing with the owner, separating the bill as some of his party were leaving, others were staying and visiting more. The servers would not separate the bill for the large group leaving them to figure out who ate what, and who owed what as the servers would anly take three credit cards as opposed to letting everyone pay for their own meals. this group had to have spent several hundred dollars and the gentleman was more than polite. The owner or manager, (whoever she was), showed a complete lack of customer service and people skills. She was not only rude, but stated something to the effect of not caring if he or his friends ever came back. If she is not the owner, the owner should be aware that this is theway his staff is treating paying customers. I was appauled and decided right then, I will never ge back or reccomend this place to anyone I know. We went here this past Friday evening for my birthday. We had reservations at 6, but arrived early to catch some happy hour drinks. Happy hour was good. The drinks and snacks were well made. We got to our table in the dining room and were very excited for the dinner to come. We usually go to Brickhouse across the street; however, they raised their steak prices to about $50 dollars and decided to give another highly rated Bend steakhouse a try. My partner ordered the swordfish. He liked it and the flavors on the plate were great, but said it was pretty dry. I ordered their ribeye medium rare. My family and I are very familiar with steak, and I have worked in the fine-dining restaurant industry for years (enough to know what medium or medium rare should look like). When I got my steak it was well-done. Hardly a touch of pink. I have never been one to send something back and complain (In fact this was my first time ever feeling the need to do so), but if I'm paying almost $40 dollars for a steak it should be spot on. The server blamed it on "the lighting" by our table and said it makes the steak look more done. I decided to taste it to see if I was seeing things wrong, and the steak tasted try and well done, too. She politely took it back and had them recook. When I got the second steak it was raw and completely cold in the middle. To make sure it wasn't "the lighting," I took a slice to show to the manager (who was our happy hour server earlier that evening) in a different part of the restaurant that wasn't affected by that lighting. Still raw. The manager went on to tell me that she looked at the first steak I had sent back and knew it was cooked perfectly. I continued to tell her that we were acquainted with steak and new what a pink center looked like. The attitude this manager carried was shocking. She handled it very poorly for the high quality restaurant they claim to be. Telling a customer who is paying 40 dollars for a steak that they were wrong and that it was actually cooked perfectly is bad customer service. If I wasn't as experienced with steak as I am, I would admit I could have made the error as the customer. However, this is not the case and the customer should always be right, especially when spending around 200 on dinner. They ended up taking the steak away and taking it off the bill. End result was a birthday dinner minus the dinner and poor customer service from the manager or whoever she was. I ended up going to another restaurant to get some food after that. I would highly recommend going to Brickhouse instead. I do want to say our server in the dining room was very professional and polite and handled everything very well. We had her as our server another time we went here as well and she was great! read more

Second time we have been here. First visit was distasteful, figured it was just a bad day. Second visit was exactly the same, terrible. The hype in Bend OR would lead you to believe this is the best place to eat a quiet romantic dinner filled with delectable entrees and dessert. However that is simply not the case. The price is fairly common for "higher end" restaurant, yet the food is sub par. The service here is an outrage, waiting to be seated at the entrance for about 10 minutes on both occasions. Followed by a 20 minute wait to be addressed by your host. The complimentary bread and butter at the beginning of your meal is cold, and flavor less. My rib eye steak was a joke, I have had better steak during a family cook out at the lake. The asparagus was limp, the garlic mashed potatoes were something akin to instant boxed product. The Gorgonzola butter and onion rings were the only thing worth eating. By far the worst steak i have ever eaten, TWICE. The Cioppino-Style Seafood Pasta again eaten twice to rule out any chance the kitchen was having a bad day, was also very disappointing. This dish is supposed to be a delectable carefully balanced mixture of seafood and pasta, not a jambalaya style dish. Did they simply buy a seafood mix and proceeded to dump it into the plate? Regardless, Anthony's and Gregs Grill supersede this establishment by far. We will never come here again. read more

Don't go to this restaurant for a beautiful evening because the hostess will ruin it even before you get seated. She was rude, cold, imperious, crabby, not welcoming, and not helpful AT ALL as she spread her negative energy. It was meant to be a birthday celebration dinner but since we were told there were no tables available in the elevator shaft, (I'm being cheeky but another review did say it was like an elevator shaft), we removed ourselves to the bar area after the hostess informed us she had no clue when a table would open up. We debated as we sat in the bar area, wondering what to do next, when she came in to inform us we did not request the elevator shaft in our reservation, nor did they take reservations for the elevator shaft. My husband and I are bi-racial and I see another bi-racial couple was treated so offensively they left without ordering. That's what we did too. DON'T GO TO THIS RESTAURANT as the hostess will ruin it for you. She needs to be stuck in the kitchen, doing the dishes but then she'd probably spit on them there too. We ended up at Dojo's and the service was so warm and welcoming. We had a wonderful night!!!! Guess Jackalope lost some more customers. read more

WILL NOT BE BACK. I am SO UNHAPPY with my experience there. Everything started off so great. My group of 9 were there celebrating my birthday and everyone was there for the first time. We drank average wines, expensive scotches, a few appetizers and of course everyone ordered dinner. Tab being around $400. Several people we not impressed with the pricing comparison to the actual meal itself. Lacking punch and flavor completely! The mushroom appetizer was straight out of a frozen carton. I ordered the pork and it was the worst decision of the table. It tasted like metal so badly. I tried to eat it and then pushed it away and a couple of friends tasted it thinking I was being dramatic and they couldn't even finish it for me. I gave half of my meal back to the waitress and said I wasn't looking for free givings however, my meal tasted like metal. No sorry, nothing. Just said okay and took the plate. Not to mention, she looked completely irritated to be serving us. She was the one with dark hair. The blonde, was the very sincere one and I appreciated her service. She took my name and number for the owner to contact me and I haven't heard anything. I am so sad I spent my birthday celebrations there, wasted my money on MEDIOCRE food, had well below average service and I embarrassed myself because I told my whole group to come there for me. read more
