Crescent City Crab Cakes were so-so per one guest, but the other three loved their selections, Eggplant 2.0, No- So Cajun Pasta, and Tomato Basil Soup. First, the eggplant was colorful, flavorful and fresh. Not too heavy and the perfect portion. The pasta was the best dish. The flavors were phenomenal and perfectly cooked, not too salty or spicy. Lastly, the soup hit the spot. I want feeling well, but didn't want to be a party pooper by not eating, so I really appreciated the flavorful soup. The Jazz Kitchen is another local gem that I have the pleasure of visiting fairly frequently. The facility itself is nice. The low lights, intimate seating, and vibrant musically themed art work helps create the perfect atmosphere. I appreciate the diversity in shows they offer spotlighting national and local artist as well as truly musically diverse events. Tonight I attended A Tribute to Love w/ Bashiri Asad and Joyce Licorish. Such a wonderful and soulful show! Indy has such incredible artist. Next week I will be there for Old Soul Entertainment's annual J. Dilla party, which is an AMAZING celebration honoring a legendary hip-hop producer. The week after that I hope to check out the Brazilian Carnivale or Mardi Gras celebration! So as you can see the Jazz Kitchen offers an array of events, so everyone is guaranteed to find something to enjoy or new to explore. The food is consistently good. Tonight, I had my favorite appetizer, the Taquitos. The staff is fairly friendly. My only complaint is inconsistency with service. I couldn't imagine how difficult it might be to wait on people during an actual performance, but sometimes the staff is on it or like tonight I guess they were slammed so it took close to 45 minutes just to get our appetizers. Geez Louise! Irregardless, I'm definitely a fan, and I will continue to go back and support this incredible establishment. Jazz in Indy? Yes....yes there is! And the Jazz Kitchen is one of the best places to hear and enjoy it LIVE! Growing up in a musical family in the metro-Detroit area, I'm all too familiar with names like George Duke, David Sanborn, and Jeff Lorber. But, when I moved to the Circle City, I was pleasantly surprised that there is quite the lively jazz community down here and some of those big names I knew actually visit and perform here in Indy. My folks came to town for the weekend and I wanted to take them somewhere local for a night on the town. Since my Dad is a jazz enthusiast, the Jazz Kitchen seemed like the perfect venue for a fun evening out. We ended up going to the Jazz Kitchen's anniversary party, which featured the Steve Allee Big Band. My folks just loved it! We were greeted at the door by Roz, the hostess, and then promptly seated at our table by Frank, the maître d'. I advise arriving at least 45 minutes prior to any show to get a decent table. It's general admission and first come first serve for the table seating. Make sure you come hungry too because the Jazz Kitchen is known not just for the performers they host, but also for their delicious food. The menu boasts Cajun and creole entrees, including etoufeé and a paella for two! I personally recommend the blacked salmon with the citrus vinaigrette. It ain't just ALL THAT JAZZ here. The Jazz Kitchen also hosts a raucous good time on Thursdays for their Latin Dance Party. I actually first discovered JK when I was on the hunt for a good place to learn how to salsa dance. $10 cover and if you arrive early, they usually have a local salsa group that teaches a free beginner lesson. The DJ spins salsa, bachata, merengue, and reggaetone hits. Make sure you nab a mojito to wet your whistle in between partners on the dance floor! read more

It doesn't take much to turn me off to a bar, but I like this one. While I'm not much of a jazz fan, I do have to say that good acts come through here. It's not entirely limited to jazz, either: I saw a fairly good local salsa band in here one time. The maroon-ish walls and bar gleaming from the back create a sultry ambiance, and there's room to dance up front by the stage. I only had dessert here, but what I had was really good--some of kind of poached-pear-and-ice-cream dish. Mmm. The staff is very friendly here as well. When I was moving over the summer, they let me come and pick up probably 30 empty beer boxes. Sweet! The Jazz Kitchen definitely does things right. Due to some bad experiences in my past, I don't really set foot in many jazz establishments in Indy, but I'll make an exception for this one due to their good food, nice waiters and pleasant atmosphere. read more

It is VERY expensive. Now days its a concert venue that offers food and drink service. Its not a place to drop in. 2 tickets are 50 or 130 bucks just to get in the door. Two drinks (watered down) were $17. We didn't stay, but we would have spent 225 to 250 for the evening. If your not worried about money, have fun. read more

This is a pretty happening place! Thanks to Brittany L. for inviting me out for Jazz Kitchen's latin night (back in April). The place was packed when I got there, and the dancing hadn't even started yet! I headed for the bar that's near the back of the area and got a standard vodka cranberry. Price was just right and the bartenders were very friendly. At 9:30 all the dancers gathered on the marvelous hardwood floor in the center of the dining room and we started a beginner salsa lesson. Afterwards, the DJ put on a great mix of latin music to dance to, as well as some standard club music. As the night wore on, I noticed more and more people coming in! If you like good music then the Jazz Kitchen is a great place to have on your spots of interest! They keep a really complete and diverse calendar of well known and not so well known local and non local talent but all very good! You purchase tickets for show but be mindful the place is large so you will be packed in if it's a good artist that many like. Also if you want a good spot make sure you call and make a reservation and arrive just before doors open. Then also be prepared for a house minimum of $15. The food is pretty good but over priced for what you get. You get more bang for your buck with the drinks... the Side Car is my favorite. The live music is great and the ambiance is beyond reproach. What is surprising is that the food is actually pretty good as well. I expected the food to be garbage because, for some/many events, there is a spending minimum. I came here tonight for a show. I've been here before for parties but this was my first show. The place was packed and the music was great! The service.....no so much. My party of 3 all ordered drinks. The drinks came and we then ordered dinner. The server brought out bread and my side salad. Before I could finish my side salad, my Crab cakes arrived without my side. The other 2 in my party still didn't have their food. By the time I finished my crab cakes, they still didn't have food. Their food and my side finally came out. Food was good thats probably why I gave this 3 stars. After that the server took my parties drink order for round 2 and left me high and dry. I guess she decided I wasn't thirsty. I was ready to question her but she went ghost. Maybe next time I'll BYOB.... read more

We came here to see Allison Adams perform and this venue seemed perfect for the small intimate nature of the concert. The service here is really good and the food looked great, but we only came for drinks and music. Most of the dinner entrees were in the $20 range, but appetizers started under $10. Thursday night is salsa night. And they often have Old Soul Entertainment's hip hop events. I applaud them for their eclectiveness. Last night my friend and I decided to go to Jazz Kitchen because they are one of the participating restaurants of Indy Burger Week and they use Kincaid's locally sorced beef. As we walked up, there was a really cool band playing outside with just a few people on the patio. We decided we would really enjoy sitting outside as this band was the definition of good vibes. (I wish I knew who they were or I would credit them) We walked in to the vestibule to be greeted by a server. We told her we wanted to sit outside and she told us they weren't seating people anymore and that they were at capacity. The inside was full for some sort of show but we wanted to sit outside on the patio that had many open tables. She went back to supposedly ask the manager and she still insisted that they were not seating anyone but we could order out. I have a few problems here: 1) that server was just standing around and not busy whatsoever 2) if we could order out, the kitchen had the capacity to take our order 3) though I do not know capacity laws, we wanted to be outside where maybe 10 people were sitting. I'm not sure that counts as capacity. If so, why the extra tables?? 4) why didn't they have a 'Closed for Event' sign or give a wait time, or time of the end of event? Another reason I am mad is the fact that this establishment is based around live music and the fact that we were turned away was a huge disservice to performers and what jazz kitchen should stand for. All in all I think this was handled poorly. read more

Went to a show a tonight at the jazz kitchen. VERY disappointed. Ordered food at 815 and never got it. Finally came out at 915. Was looking forward to our meal. Show was over at 930, So when it did finally come we returned it back to the kitchen. Never in 10 years of coming there had such bad kitchen service. read more

Great live jazz acts, great mixed drinks. There's decent food, too, which you'd do best to sample during their "8 before 8" promo on Mondays. Eight dishes for $8. I don't know how to describe their cuisine other than "ethnic"--hummus, Jamaican patties and taquitos de speed all rub shoulders on their appetizer menu. Some pretty good jazz acts pass through this dark, intimate venue. It can get a bit crowded, but it helps that the drinks are usually expertly mixed. I've never tried a better hurricane than the one I was served at The Jazz Kitchen's Mardi Gras party. read more

My sis and I like to get together every month or so as possible. Most of our family are elsewhere or gone. Due family health issues, then me breaking my leg back in November '18, it's not been possible to do that. We had not seen each other since November when she brought me "get well" flowers. This was my first outing since early November except to the surgeon's. We were especially looking forward to meeting up. We live in different counties. Sis picked out The Jazz Kitchen and I was pumped. Kudos to the chef for excellent entree`s and presentation. When entering upon opening, I was told to take any table. As far as service or even a smile .. let alone a "Welcome" or prompt service, neh. I told our waitress I was waiting for someone. I was brought a glass of water and one menu. A bit later she asked if I wanted to order. I reminded her I was waiting for my sister. After my sister arrived she ordered a soft drink and I handed her my menu. Sis said her soda tasted really watered down, when she told the waitress she did bring out another. About five minutes later I had to ask for another menu, once I could see anyone. (We were the only customers in the restaurant.) I wanted the eggplant and some grilled chicken, since the grilled chicken wasn't offered with the eggplant the chef refused to offer me the chicken .. under any circumstances with the eggplant, that's how it was told to me. No apology such as, "I'm sorry, but . . . " No warm interactions at all, at anytime from anyone. I ordered something else. The two waitresses were sitting by the kitchen on their cell phones. Our waitress came to the table once during our meal to ask if our food was ok. When my sister finished, the waitress took her dishes and did offer take my food back and put it in a container. I really appreciated that! We asked for the check and then waited about five minutes for her to get our payment. As we left we received No thanks for coming, did you enjoy your visit . . nothing. Though the food was good. We will not be going back. Please, a bit of hospitality and at least a smile and welcome. As a former food server, I tip well for good service and will even "overtip". We were both disappointed in our experience. P.S. We did say thank you anytime our waitress was at the table for any reason. (we always do) And, I asked for complements to be given to the chef upon leaving. We passed two staff as we left and nothing was said back other than, "OK". I'm sure many have enjoyed themself here, it's a lovely place. I do wish our experience would have been better. read more

The Jazz Kitchen is a local staple that has been entertaining Indy crowds in a variety of ways for years and years. I've seen local & national vocalists, hip hop live artists & dance nights, salsa dance nights, street fairs and most recently I saw a jazz trio that I'd never heard of, but it was my mother's birthday, and it was the Jazz Kitchen so I knew they'd be good. :) And they were! It's cool to see all of the ways that the space can be configured for all of the different types of events that they do. I'm also starting to see them more and more at different events around the city with their offsite catering, which is pretty cool. Great place with a great vibe. I went to a salsa dancing class on Thursday. I hadn't been for awhile and now I remember why. If you're a beginner dancer and feel uncomfortable on the floor without knowing the steps, you're going to love this event and place. Now, for any free spirits out there, no, no, no. You will not like this orderly version of dance. You will not appreciate the painfully slow teaching, or the desire to get the steps just so. The drinks are average price, average taste.
