We came here for the first time and tried an 8 lb seafood boil. Wow!!!! It was delicious. They have different sauces we did the combination with had the right amount of spice.. At first we thought there is no way we could eat the entire two pans butt we did. My daughter chose here for her birthday dinner. They came out and sang and gave her a complimentary piece of cheese cake. This will be her birthday go to place from no on. They have paper towel on the table and give you a bin. Next to the soda dispenser is a large sink which is nice and easy to access since is messy even with the gloves. If you want good seafood this I the place on the Westside. read more

I was in the mood for fish and thought it might be similar to another crab place I often visit, but it turned out to be different. Placed an online order and when I showed up the order was ready. Once I got it home, it was hot and as ordered. I did go inside to pick up my order and noticed they had several tables. This is not a fancy place. I think the place could use a little scrubbing. As some of the tables and things looked a little outdated. My friend and I are regulars at Ugly Crab and have been for a while. We usually order the Super Seafood Combo and it never disappoints--until this most recent visit. We noticed right away that something was different. The sauce, which is normally rich, buttery, and full of flavor, tasted noticeably off--it was more watery and lacked the usual punch. On top of that, the seafood didn't seem as fresh or high-quality as it normally is. It just didn't feel like the Ugly Crab experience we've come to love. We're loyal customers and will absolutely continue to support this place because we've had so many great meals here. But we were honestly shocked and disappointed by how far off this visit felt compared to what we're used to. Hoping it was just a fluke and things are back to normal next time. read more

The food was decent so that was at least worth the 1 star even though it still wasn't made properly. I called in a Togo order on the 20th around 7 pm and first of all it took about 10 minutes to place the order because from what I was told when arriving, he was the cook and didn't really know what he was doing. I gave him my number several times for my order and he kept asking if it was xxxx in which I would reply no again. I finally asked to speak to the female who pulled up my transaction history and I told her I wanted EXACTLY what I order everytime I come in which is pretty often. She said she could see what that was and told me how long it would be and the price. It was a couple of dollars more than normal but inflation seems to always be on the rise so it's whatever. I pick up my order to find out instead of my normal 3 piece corn (which i always pay extra for) wasn't in the bad and she only gave me 1. I called back and asked to get my missing pieces and she argued with me for what seemed like a total of 5 minutes over the corn trying to tell me I didn't ask for it when I specifically said I wanted all my extras as usual including the potatoes, corn and sausage. She said I didn't order the extra corn and it doesn't come with it which I then questioned how I've been able to get it each time then and why did my order come to more money for less food? She had no answer. As i stated previously, i have a specific order I continuously purchase so I know the quantity I should receive for what I pay. When I got home and started dishing out the food, the quantity seemed much less than normal so I decided to weigh it. Sure enough, I didn't get what I paid for and I got about 8 mini pieces of sausage for the ridiculous upcharge. Half of the black mussels either didn't have anything in them or they were so small you could barely get a taste. Not only that but my son hates spice so I get the garlic sauce which is an additional $5 which they charged me for yet it was still spicy. This was a HORRIBLE experience. I would definitely recommend watching out for this location if not all as they are scamming people out of the food which is probably saving them millions. My BFF recommended... We pulled up and the window was busted out of the front and boarded up. Not a good sign. We walk in and it's HOT! At first I thought maybe I just needed to cool down from coming outside but NO! They had a big fan in the back which didn't do much! We got crab, lobster tail, shrimp, corn, potatoes, sausage and eggs w/ the Ugly Crab sauce (all 3) The sauce was very watery and we had to ask for more as there wasn't even enough to dip. Appreciate this concept in Avon, and it's a good place. It was about $140 for 3 of us (including tip) for lunch. I really enjoyed one of the combos with 1 pound king crab, 2 lobster tails, 1 pound shrimp, 4 corn, half pound of sausage, and potatoes. Everything was well-cooked and well-seasoned. Extra sides included rice and steam broccoli. Steamed rice to soak up the sauce is a must! Pay at the counter service includes all the tools you need to break into the seafood in including: bib, set of gloves, We did the Boiling Sauce which had great flavor and didn't find it to be "spicy." I'll be definitely be doing the fire next time. I noticed another guest mentioned the shrimp was deveined. That was not our case at all. They were deveined and very peel-able. read more

Pro tip: wear old clothes here and get your napkins (from the roll of paper towels on the table) ready before you put your gloves on and start eating. Yes, you get a bib but it doesn't cover everything. Flavor and quality of food was good (we got snow crab legs and shrimp with garlic butter), but you will smell like butter and garlic for hours afterward. I left feeling like I needed a shower. As far as these seafood boiling places go, this is one of the better spots. Lots of choices here for sure. You order at the counter and you need to get your own drinks. You are given bibs and gloves to help with your feast. I highly recommend using both because this can get messy. I generally order the shrimp with the combination sauce, extra potatoes and/or corn and also add the sausage. This usually gives me another meal or two to take home with me. The taste is delicious, the portions are generous and the prices within reason. What sets this place apart is the speed with which your food arrives. Also the shrimp are deveined, leaving the back shell cut, which makes the peeling so much easier. The potatoes are properly cooked, other places it's a gamble and you may end up with under or overcooked potatoes and neither of those options is any good at all. The sausage add-on is a generous portion of thinly sliced smoked sausage, which adds another taste dimension to this. The corn is tasty juicy sweet corn, which I could eat all day. I don't really recommend the crab rangoon here, but that's my personal preference. Other's have liked it. read more

I'm not sure if they are made at the restaurant or frozen and fried. However they made their way to me, was the right way! This food was beyond bad. The crawfish down to the crab done had me gagging. I can eat rocks with salt and pepper, but I took a bite of the crawfish and damn near puked. The crab legs were BAD. Like not "oh this crab leg has no meat" or "this crab smells funny" but actually BAD. The crab leg was soft to the touch and was brown and yellow. First time coming and never coming back. As a certified big back myself and an Indy foodie this was a huge let down. Damn near strapped myself to a C4. Fountain drinks are self serve and they have the BEST ice along with FREE refills. It's a family friendly environment, my son was in heaven. Finally tried the ugly crab! I heard about this restaurant from #EatHereIndy and finally had the time to try it out. We walked in, was immediately greeted and was told the run down of how things operated there. The nice lady told us to order at the front check in and then find a seat to eat. My husband and I wanted shrimp, crab legs, sausage, corn, and potatoes and we got that! The food was so flavorful and delicious and came out fast. The food came out in a bag, and we were able to open the bag and put it on a tray! That was very convenient because it let us know how much food we actually received. Overall we were happy. Ugly crabs, pretty crabs ... I don't discriminate when it comes comes to a crab's outward appearance, as long as it tastes good and gets in mah belly. I have yearned for a good seafood boil place in Indiana. Seeing as this is a landlocked state, I didn't have much hope. That is, until I visited Ugly Crab. Ugly Crab is amazing! The seafood is fresh, the sauces are delicious, and the entire meal is simply finger-licking good. (Literally: You eat with your hands here, so you will be licking your fingers.) We usually go for mild spiciness with seafood boils, but we were feeling dangerous and opted for medium. This turned out to be an excellent decision! The spiciness is just enough to make the food interesting, but it doesn't overwhelm the taste of the food. Try washing down the spice with a beer -- they have several to choose from, including Corona and Sapporo. Beyond the seafood (we got shrimp and crab legs), the potatoes, corn and sausage that we added to our boil were amazing, as well. Especially the corn, which is as it should be in this corn-producing state. We visited Ugly Crab during the summer when corn is at its best, and the corn we got was top-notch. The service here is attentive and efficient, but not overly intrusive, which is just like I like it. After you're done and your hands and face are a mess, you can walk over to the hand-washing station that's located by the soda machine. read more

This place is such a surprise to me. It has been waiting to open for what seems like eternity and I happen to see pictures on the Facebook but very little announcement or publicity which was probably good bc everything was quick with no wait. So here's the scoop. You pay at the counter then they bring you your food. You have multiple combo options that come with corn and potatoes with some odd appetizer options (imo) and plenty of seafood selections. You choose your sauce type and spice level too. They give you gloves bibs and a cute little trash can at the table for shells. We got the shrimp and crab legs, with the combination sauce spicy. It was so good we got a order of crawfish (my first time trying) fire spicy. I couldn't believe how good the shrimp and crab legs were! Kind of expected it'd taste like a cheap Chinese buffet because the restaurant is so casual (plastic forks and styrofoam plates too) but that was absolutely not the case! Flavor was excellent and I couldn't get enough!! Cost is average for a seafood place. It was $40 after Tax for the lb of crab legs and lb of shrimp. We had a nice dinner here, but the entrance is pretty confusing. You order at the counter, take a number, then they bring the food to your table. They have a huge take-out business. We saw a ton of people popping in to carry out their food. Service was fine, but not particularly friendly or helpful. They seemed irritated that we didn't immediately understand their setup of how to order. The prices were comparable to other seafood boiling places, as was the quality of the food and taste of the sauces. The seating area was fine, but it felt really informal, with almost a fast food vibe. Definitely more of a friend hang out than date night spot. read more
