Hands down our favorite place to eat in Boulder. Small restaurant, small menu, but everything is bursting with flavor. We've enjoyed dining both inside and outside (weather permitting), but it's the amazingly delicious food we keep coming back for. We are big breakfast people, so we've mostly eaten here during their brunch hours. The huevos rancheros are seasonal, but the BEST we've had anywhere. Steak and eggs are a close second when we can't get the huevos rancheros. If you're looking for a good cup of strong coffee, you won't be disappointed and their iced tea is great, too. The staff has always been friendly and the service top notch. Would highly recommend! read more

On a recent outing to Boulder for some window shopping and brunch, I was treated to a late brunch at The Kitchen. Since it was later in the day we were seated right away without reservations. We spent some time enjoying the atmosphere as well as the well rounded menu. Choices that included French Toast, a full English breakfast, Salads, tarts, sandwiches, and other brunch like options. I decided on a Mimosa and the Goat and Gouda Omelet (no not Goat Meat, Goat cheese). My companion decided on the Roasted Beet Salad with hazelnuts and chevre with a bowl of fruit to share. Our food arrived timely and our stomachs were screaming for some nourishment. The Goat and Gouda Omelet was cooked perfectly, fluffy eggs and cheesy. My Omelet came with a side of house potatoes and a side of lightly dressed greens. I don't know if others have the same complaints but I hate frozen cubed potatoes. If you can't do fresh potatoes or hash browns, don't offer them - I feel cheated. I did NOT feel cheated here, these were fresh, hand cut potatoes cooked with love and I inhaled each and every one in ecstasy. The fresh bowl of fruit was full of blueberries, pineapple, blackberries, and some melon - we took forkful after forkful until we found the bottom and that took some time. The salad was pronounced excellent and finished off with equal enjoyment. Our waiter was a wonderful young man who made wonderful recommendations and was just the right amount of chatty. One of the better Brunch places I've been to and boosts a sizable menu of which is enticing me to return for more food pleasures. read more

When you are waiting at the front of the restaurant for a table, they have these amazing looking pastries that seem to have their own heart beat as they stare at me. It doesn't matter how good the company is that I am with... I swear these amazing looking pastries are alive and giving me signals that they are interested in me too. It stresses me out. Tables are small and simple, but the tall ceilings don't make you feel crowded. If you come later in the day, you can enjoy the upstairs wine lounge, which at certain times I have found extremely crowded, so try to get their early. One of the best things about The Kitchen are their conscious eco practices... In fact, they are known throughout Colorado not only for their food (Yes, even chefs speak highly of this place!) but for their commitment to buying local and organic products, composting leftover foods, offering biodegradable paper products and supplement their used energy with wind power. The most "sustainable practice" is giving their staff leftover wine of bottles that were open that night but not finished off... Score! Have lived in Boulder 30 years and have been bored with the restaurants for awhile. But wow, had a really outstanding dinner here with my sister. We started with grilled oysters, the carrots and whipped feta(the best!),the cauliflower salad and the roast chicken. Cava, wine and dessert. It was all excellent. Kitchen is bitchin. (First thing that popped into my noggin.) Well it is. Went to Kitchen twice over the weekend. Once for snacks and a drink. The second was to simply eat.... Saturday night was crowded, as expected, but not overwhelming. As fate would have it, I bellied up to the bar and grabbed an open seat quickly. I had my perch. I ordered up a glass of Victory Hop Wallop, and as all things at Kitchen it was delivered with the care and imagination as they do everything else. My beer arrived in a wine glass - a close match to the typical beer glass you'd find in a bar in Montparnasse. It's these little details that have me coming back again...and again. Sunday, after a long hike, I returned to Kitchen. This time for a light lunch. I had the English Breakfast and it was superb. Everything is harvested locally, as is the mandate at Kitchen. I stopped by The Kitchen for lunch with my friends. From the moment we were seated till we got up and left, the lunch at the Kitchen Boulder was a lovely treat in the middle of a cold day. I absolutely loved the decor. I couldn't help myself and wandered around a little bit while waiting for our food to arrive. I love that they bring a bottle of water to your table. I drink water like there is no tomorrow, so I always welcome a whole bottle of water all to myself. I ordered Olive Oil Poached Bristol Bay Salmon Salad. The flavors of the salad complimented each other extremely well: sherry vinaigrette with chive aioli wasn't too overpowering, pleasantly light and balanced. Bristol Bay salmon was cooked nicely, still moist and flavorful (though in general wild-caught salmon tends to be a bit drier side than farm raised). I did not try what my companions ordered, but everyone was very pleased with the food served at The Kitchen. read more

I came as part of a bachelor party with 6 others, and overall we thought the food was very good, though the service was extremely weird. I say weird because I don't know how else to describe it. We obviously were going to rack up a big bill, since we were going all out, but the server acted basically annoyed that we were there....cool dude. The food really stood out as being quite awesome though, so I still want to give 3 stars for that. The charcuterie plate was fantastic, we absolutely loved the prosciutto. The fries were also huge and tasty. My entree was the trout which had a tangy vinaigrette that I loved. Other stand outs were the pork chop and chicken. Drinks were good (I was all about the rosé). I feel like this review should reflect the attitude of the restaurant, which if I can describe it succinctly, involves serving locally sourced food at reasonable prices without trying to do too much. What a cool place! This place is very nostalgic and it's hard to capture in words unless you've been there. I would say this is a staple of Boulder and you e not seen it all unless you've been here! Can't say I was too impressed. For almost $30 you get only a slice of fish (mackerel in this case, which isn't even a high end fish) and a few slices of green beans. Not impressive. Initially stepping into The Kitchen from an area that was starting to feel like we were surrounded by tourists & maybe a few chain restaurants, I felt an immediate sense of relief. We opted to sit at the bar. Somehow at that moment I had a deja vu feeling, as if I was actually at 715 in Lawrence. It was a weird but good feeling after the chaotic feeling of annoying touristy types taking over the sidewalks on our stroll from the vehicle to The Kitchen. Once seated, we were enthusiastically greeted by Michael (who regardless of how busy he might have been, still managed to promote the establishment, share his knowledge, assist me with my gluten free menu selections, make an AMAZING cocktail special for me, and even offer suggestions for our future food stops on our road trip). We were offered a taste of a few wines that we might order with dinner. The one we both loved was a French - Chateau St Jean De La Gineste I believe. If I hadn't been so set on the cocktail, & if we were not needing to get back on the road, we most definitely would have ordered per Michael's selection. Our meals were as follows: Colorado Lamb Sirloin Oven Roasted - white runner beans, sautéed greens & anchoyade AND the House Made Tagliatelle (with a combo lamb/pork meat sauce). Again, I found myself in a situation where the food was SO good that I cleaned my plate (which is rare for me. I always get a box & take part of my meal home). Oh & I almost forgot. My dining companion ordered the Pot au Chocolat. I had to try it. I took a bite sans the cream. I can't even describe how heavenly this bowl of chocolately goodness was. Just order it if they have it on the menu, and you like chocolate. It could satisfy a brownie craving for sure. Both the Pot au Chocolat and an almond polenta dessert of some kind were confirmed gluten free as well. The atmosphere at The Kitchen is great. I could definitely envision an intimate dinner, a casual brunch, or some drinks at the bar. It seems to serve as whatever the public might want it to be. What makes a community bistro? Is it a large communal table set smack dab in the center of the dining room where anyone can sit? Is it a predilection for locally sourced food? Hours that enable strolling in mid-afternoon for Campari and soda and people watching? Or is it the ineffable feel that a place gives you that says "hey, welcome. relax and be our guests." The Kitchen is the answer to all of the above questions. A 100% wind powered restaurant located on Pearl Street, the place is populated by servers who know their burratta from a beretta and can give you the story behind the farmer who made that slow roasted pork you're eating. I ate here today for lunch with some new friends. We started with a house-made burratta - buttery (literally: the word means buttered in Italian) and just the right sensation to start lunch. Black olives and crispy bread made the appetizer history within minutes of landing on our table. The tomato soup with drizzled olive oil was delicious and just right. Not too acidic, not too creamy. I think that's hard to do. I also had a chopped salad that was ho-hum. I really liked the flatbread pizza my lunch companions ordered. it had local Haystack cheese and just tasted like a picnic--hard to describe but that's how it felt. It also reminded me of something Pizzeria Bianco would have served. Other yums were in the form of the ultimate comfort food--sticky pudding and creme brulee with fresh strawberries. Obviously, the food is savory and comforting. Not too precious. Priced moderately. What impressed me most was how comfortable the place felt, its commitment to community, to sustainability, to buying local. I had heard the Kitchen was the place to eat in Boulder and all those recommendations were spot on. Loved this place! Definitely great date night spot if you head to their upstairs area - a great ambiance. Drinks are delicious and so is the food! I would highly recommend the gnochetti, burrata, and lobster rolls. Some of the best appetizers I have had, and super fresh. For entrees, both the black spaghetti and strip steak were delicious and cooked to perfection. To top it off, order their cheesecake, which somehow tastes better than any other cheesecake I have tried (and that's a lot)! Wait staff was super friendly and service was quick and attentive. Was in Boulder with my husband for a work trip and we decided to check out The Kitchen based on reviews and it's location. The restaurant is cozy and located within the busy downtown area. They have seating in the front along glass windows so you can look out, a small patio in the front, and good size main seating area. It has a very warm and intimate vibe and we appreciate the farm to table concept they offer. Our server was friendly and attentive. The hushpuppy appetizer was my favorite part of the meal, they were very delicious. I enjoyed the roasted chicken and roasted carrots, both tasted very fresh. My husband loved his pasta bolognese. We would absolutely come back next time we are visiting. read more

We came here for a midweek lunch with my wife and daughter. We had a lovely experience with good service (unlike our experience at Hapas, read my review). We had the amazing tomato soup, prosciutto and burata flatbread, roasted red pepper and burata flatbread, and my daughter had gnocci pesto. Wow! Great meal. I lived in Boulder for 4 years and would make special trips to The Kitchen for their tomato soup!! If you go there you have to get this. Everything on the menu is great, but trust me this cannot be missed. Some of my favorites also include: Tuna ceviche, oysters, fish tacos, grilled striped bass, and the french fries. The restaurant environment is great and very welcoming. You can find yourself sitting at the community table making friends with others. I had the pleasure of having a few drinks at the Kitchen in the "Upstairs" portion and was tickled pink at what a classy and well designed place this restaurant/bar is. It was a cool Saturday night and Kat and I went to meet up with some of her friends. I was pleasantly surprised at how elegant this place was without seeming pretentious. It was packed to the rafters with a slightly older crowd (meaning the undergrads shaking their thing down at Around Midnight didn't make an appearance here) ranging from the post day on the slopes group, to a fun wig party of 20. I took a peek at the downstairs and it seems to be a nice place for a date or a group dinner; it reminded me of some of the nicer places in SF. I perused the menu upstairs but didn't order any food, although the charcuterie and cheese plate did look tempting. Their wine list is limited for glasses, but they had a pretty extensive bottle and half bottle list. A full bar is available and they had local brews for those less inclined towards wine. Prices are a little high, but I think the quality of the service and the food served are what you pay for. Too bad I am not a local, they offer a communal dining experience upstairs on Monday nights with a Prix Fixe which I think sounds great! Make reservations as they cook for the number of people who are attending, so no walk-ins. They also have happy hours as well as wine and beer tasting classes! It seems like a multi purpose/tasking establishment with tones of a young hip person, and the influence of a well dressed older cousin. read more

I can't say that I was very impressed with this place. It is a typical farm to table restaurant in my opinion. We had the gulf shrimp hush puppies, and the green beans as an appetizer. I thought both were mediocre. For dinner I had the dry aged New York strip. For $40 I would expect a better cut, the steak was tough and difficult to cut. Maybe it was just a bad evening for the steak? Our waitress was very nice, and we had no issues with the service. My recommendation is to pick something other than the steak. read more

With so much expectation for a James Beard Award holder, I was not impressed at all. Don't get me wrong, I was really looking forward to coming here when we visited Boulder. Also, I appreciate the cool and laid-back vibe this place has with communal table setting, open bar area and friendly service. However, I came here for good foods and being from the Bay, the success rate of 1 out of 3 did not cut it for me. I came here for Sunday brunch and I orderred Green Curry Chicken Salad with Apple, Pork Pulled Sandwich with side of Potatoes salad. Only the Curry salad made it for me. I really appreciate the fusion of Asian flavors, green curry, with Western ingredients, salad, apple, bits of pecan & pine nuts... It was simple but with the right mixture of all of the above combined. But the sandwich was so blahh and did not have anything for me to remember it by..... But I was even sadder when the famous Sticky Toffee Pudding dessert came out... Gosh... and people raved about this dessert in particular..... what were people eating... puddle of gooey maple syrup??? I do not get it... this was tooo sweet that it numbed both my taste bud and my sweet tooth if there was any before coming here... It was not wat I expected it to be... That's why I said it's 1 out of 3... kinda sad in a way since I went all that way from San Jose, CA to Boulder, CO just to be disappointed. This place is OK for food and OK for service. We went for breakfast and the atmosphere was more pleasant than the food itself. The menu wasn't much of a looker and I found myself compromising my morning taste buds for something I found just OK. It was just OK that I even forgot what I ordered. I remembered bacon, scrambled eggs, some overly salted potatoes, and burnt toast. Then there was Angry Mike as I'd like to call him. I don't know his name but it was a younger guy trudging around leaving carafes of water for people and not saying a word. Like I mentioned before, the atmosphere is great and their hospitality is right on queue but other than that, this isn't a place where I would come back. I love the story behind the place and kudos for helping schools and most importantly the children. However, nothing sticks out about the food to make me want to come back anytime soon. read more

This place is cute off of pearl street. It reminds you of something that is in the movies but in a good way. We only went for dessert. My friend and port and I had chai tea. The chai tea was ok. I like a little more spice in my chai. For dessert was had the sticky toffee pudding and cheese plate. The cheese plate was great. The toffee pudding was similar to a small bowl of molasses, really sweet with nuts and ice cream. The service here is meh. It took the hostess a while to come back and we had to ask the manager to be seated. The place was even busy. Then we had to wait a whole for a server it was odd. So it was one of those times when you order everything really quickly because you don't know when your server will be back. All in all it was an ok place. read more

What we enjoyed: Cheese plate - 3 selections (chef's choice) 2oz each, with an accompanying pairing (chutney, olives, honey) and raisin bread. Pasta Bolognase - My friend loved it to the last bite. I thought it was way too rich. Pork Chop - Holy heavens. Melt in your mouth perfection, perfectly cooked with a great side of greens and slice of MOIST cornbread. Delightful. The first meal we had after arriving in Boulder was here at The Kitchen. I was thinking of coming here for dinner but we decided to just go in for lunch instead as there was not wait for seating. I ordered curry chicken salad with hazel nuts and apple, and it was very filling and tasteful. Chicken was a bit tough, but great flavor. My husband had char grilled lamb burger and it was delish. Lamb patty was huge and it was perfectly done. You could really taste the good lamb and charcoal. One of the best we had so far. Good, friendly service, and I liked the fact that there is a board with the list of local farms they buy their ingredients from. My wife and I always love going to The Kitchen. We try and visit it once a year since we don't live in Boulder and it never disappoints so last night we took my cousin and his wife, who are visiting from the East Coast. As always the service was perfect and the food wonderful but I have to mention something that I found thoughtful and somewhat extraordinary. I ordered the pork chop for dinner and our server asked me If I'd like a glass of wine with it. I asked him to pick something since we were chatting away and he obviously knew his way around the wine list. The only direction I gave him was I was thinking of something red and medium weight, like a granache. A couple of minutes later he came back with 2 half glasses, both varieties unfamiliar to me, one racy and fresh from Sicily and one softer and fruitier from Spain. He said he brought them both because he said he thought I would like to try something different and interesting and both would pair nicely with my food, but in very different ways. I LOVE wine and love trying new and unique wines and this level of thoughtfulness and attention took the whole experience dining at one of our favorite restaurants for me to a whole new level. When I woke up this morning, still happy from my visit with family and our amazing dining experience, I intended to grab my copy of the receipt and recognize this great server by name. Unfortunately, I must have left the receipt on the table last night. So, I hope someone from The Kitchen sees this and will recognize service above and beyond the norm, helping cement in place, for us, The Kitchen as one of the best dining experiences around. read more

We stopped in to celebrate my mom's birthday on our way back from Estes Park. We were excited to eat here after the limited options we had in Estes for the week. For the most part, the food was pretty good. The menu was small but there was something for everyone. So why the three stars you might ask? When they found out we were celebrating a birthday, they brought out a "birthday treat" which was nice. What's not nice is that they charged us for it, something we didn't ask for or order. We are in town the Wednesday before Labor Day and walk up without a reservation and were sat immediately! There are many spots to choose from in Boulder but after looking at Yelp, I can see how it has such great reviews. They offered bread to start which was fresh, airy and lighMy mom and I split the shrimp hush puppies, half chicken, and then a side of grits and side of green beans. Everything was cooked to perfection and the flavors of each dish were surprising and extremely on point. I couldn't stop eating. We finished with the sticky toffee dessert, which you cannot pass up if you are eating there! Highly recommend. They have an extensive list of wine and spirits. My mom had a Tito's and water and I had a diet coke. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Boulder and would stop back in when I am here next! read more

We are from out of town and looking for a great spot to treat our favorite college student and her roommates. The Kitchen went beyond just a treat. We shared in several dishes and each was prepared to perfection. We started with the carrots which were cooked to perfection soft inside with a nice crunch on the outside. The creamy whipped feta and Urfa chili were the perfect counterpoint to the sweetness of the carrot. The lamb was cooked to perfection and was melt in your mouth tender. The cauliflower dish was full of flavor and had so many texture profiles to delight with a bit of char on the garam masala dusted cauliflower, to the creamy and slightly tart blended base to the perfectly pickled red onion. The chocolat de pot was perfect. The chocolate was a beautiful dark richness with just a light dusting of Maldon salt. Altogether the flavors and textures in every dish were very well balanced, and the flavors hit all the right notes. Our server was was also fun and the team took great care of all of us. read more

Had a nice late lunch here with a friend. Colorado lamb burger! I had never had a lamb burger, and must say it exceeded my expectations. The fries were great, too! The most enjoyable thing about this restaurant is the "farm to table", as they call it, menu, and their community mindedness. They have a "community night" every Monday, which donates money to local schools to start "learning gardens". I envy those kids. I wish I had a learning garden. read more

I really appreciated the concept of "The Kitchen" and it had good reviews so I was eager to try it in Boulder. I was so disappointed by this restaurant I don't know what to say. The price was very high for the food. I don't mind paying more for locally sourced, fresh, organic, sustainable food, but it needs to be prepared well. The food supplied to The Kitchen was not prepared well, doing a disservice to the sustainable food movement this restaurant is trying to start. Our hushpuppies were the best, but not remarkable. The asparagus was served cold and overcooked. The Chinese broccoli was undercooked to the point that it was woody and crunchy. The french fries were cooked in oil that was too hot so the exterior was charred and the interior was undercooked. The main dishes were ok, but not special. Dessert was Sticky Toffee Pudding and was fine, but not really STP. The service was weird too. We ordered the fries, broccoli and asparagus as "sides" but they were brought as appetizers. I had so many better meals in the area for less money. I say skip this place and pick something better. read more
