Another master class by Jamie Aquino! I've been eyeing her Farm to Table class for a couple years and finally had the chance to attend with my dad. This class is great because you also get a trip to the Kendall Yards Farmers Market where Jamie breaks down what's in season and an ideas for how to use various ingredients. You shop along with her as she picks out the main ingredients for the class and have time to shop yourself before getting started with the actual class back at the Kitchen Engine. Her classes and dishes are vegetarian and plant-based so you leave with nutritious and delicious recipes. My only disclaimer is that this class (and really any class) will be challenging for those with mobility issues. The walking involved at the market with this class and the bar stool seating for the 3-hr class was difficult for my father, who has mobility issues. That said, he has a blast. Kitchen Engine I love you! I'd just arrived in Spokane and was wandering aimlessly with my man when we wandered into the old flour mill building. Lo and behold, there was one of the best kitchen gadget ships I've ever experienced combined with a cafe combined with a cooking school. This place is seriously the best of three worlds. I was able to buy some loose leaf tea for my daughter, the cortado was DELICIOUS, and they had some very specialized kitchen tools o haven't seen anywhere else (pizza scissors that double as servers!) if you're a foodie, a chef, or just someone who likes good espresso, this is the place to stop in. Plus, my honey forgot his water bottle when we ordered coffee and the baristas were so kind to have set it aside for us when we later returned. LOVE this place. read more

SOME cooking classes are amazing and others...not so much. I would never recommend the sourdough brownie class. Even though it's a 'teaser class', the was no content to entice me to come back and not worth $25 to throw ingredients in a bowl and mix. No cooking instruction, no jokes or entertaining presentation and no personalization. The recipe was straight from any online recipe website and had zero variations, frosting or any takaways unique to the instructor. The take-and-bake-at-home sample was a single size brownie - I'm not kidding its like 2"×4". I was sad we didn't even get to taste the brownies prepared in class. Zero brownie tasting or samples of other goodies this guy might make in other classes ...the take home and bake brownies were not that good. This turned me away from Kitchen Engine - it was a terrible 'teaser'. Take any class from Jamie! She is amazing! She actually teaches you cooking skills, is very entertaining and I could not have loved her class more! My family loved the sample dinner I brought home from her class. Thanks, Jamie! read more

Yesterday proved to me once again the importance of buying local. Purchased a coffee grinder a while back, while in the store we saw it was the exact same price on-line. Not wanting to wait, wanting to buy local we purchased in. The coffee grinder got jammed, tried, and tried to clear it, on-line videos, etc. Needing our AM coffee fix we brought it to the store. Ok I wish there were more places like this. Its small but has a ton of stuff from gourmet cookware to kitchen electronics. They also have a lot of boutique fresh DOMA coffee and an amazing tea selection. I LOVE the TEA! They do a lot of demos here as well, towards the back of the store (even classes if I remember right) They don't carry any junk products, anything I've bought here is holding up well unlike big box store cheap stuff. My husband talked to one gentleman for about 45 minutes and then bought a siphon to make his coffee. In the spirit of improved wellness, on our daughters' recommendation we invest in an air fryer, we headed straight to Kitchen Engine. Locally owned unique array of quality cooking tools and kitchen accessories. I love just walking in the door, a secret gardens of culinary possibilities. A month or so ago I discovered the ESPRO French press, one for my husband who needs to go half decaf and one for my love of dark roast. Every morning is a Zen experience and the coffee stays hot in the well crafted stainless steal press. Back to the air fryer, after deliberation, I selected the combo, a lid that sits on top of a pressure cooker/slow cooker, a that could transform our enjoyment of fresh veggies with enhanced delectable texture prepared in a lighter amount of cooking oils. Unfortunately, in spite of the instruction, recipes, video guidance I struck out 3 times. Undercooked or over cooked with burnt edges I was left frustrated and defeated. I decided I must return it along with the Multi-cooker. Understandably, this presented a dilemma somewhat unique to a small locally owned business. I had used the equipment. When I examined the lid, the unit appeared to be off center. They directed me to the company. After exchanged communications and some frustration, the issue was resolved. When we returned to finalize the transaction the staff was gracious, respectful and supportive. We appreciate the quality of their kitchen tools and equipment and the care they offer aspiring good cooks. read more

I'm not rating for prices... They are what they are...although once I bought wusthoff shears from them at a lower price because I showed them what a vendor in Amazon was selling them for... So maybe they do price Mach... Anyways great staff, they usually have coffee or tea to sample. Also they do fun culinary classes. Their back room is a kitchen where special guests come in and for a fee you can take a lesson in how to make a particular dish and many times get to make it there yourself! We have been to the kitchen engine multiple times and made purchases each time. We've spent hundreds of dollars here. The last two times we have gone the employees were very unpleasant about wanting to validate our parking. The previous time (beginning of April 2017) they did not validate and we had to pay. Yesterday, April 20th, they did not want to validate and we had to insist(!!) so they only gave us a half hour. We spent over $20 each time, which is twice the amount you have to spend here to get parking validation. On April 20th, we had five minutes left on our parking validation from another store and the employees told us that if we "hurried" to our vehicle, we wouldn't have to pay. We let them know we wanted to continue looking around and take our time. They kept pushing back trying to tell us that the "next" place we purchased something from could validate our parking before accusing us of planning on leaving The Flour Mill and going elsewhere. Two employees teamed up to try to get us to leave without getting our parking validated. Finally they gave us the minimum amount possible and were very surly about it. We purposely came to this store as a repeat customer to purchase items that we *could* have bought on Amazon, cheaper and with prime shipping, but we wanted to give our money to a local business. And now The Kitchen Engine is arguing with me on facebook and trying to Mansplain "why" -- and apparently has blocked me from their page so I can no longer respond. All very negative actions and have definitely firmed that we will no longer be spending our money here. Some tips for customer service - since whomever is the doing the social media obviously needs to have some remedial customer service training: You should LISTEN, APOLOGIZE, and FIX. Not mansplain or gaslight. What would have been so hard about acknowledging the issue, apologizing sincerely, and assuring us that a chat would be had with employees about being gracious about parking validation? You even said on Facebook that the minimum amount to spend there was $10. If I spend $20 there and ask for parking validation, I should get it with no questions asked, and cheerfully instead of the employees being all surly and argumentative. You should be jumping up and down with joy that a repeat long term customer took time out of their day to let your company know there has been a repeat issue with attitude from your employees. Most people will just not come back without saying anything - so you won't know you have a problem. I guess you don't want our business. read more

Sheesh. I rarely leave a shop in Spokane as encouraged as I left the Kitchen Engine today. For the past four months I've been trying to resolve an issue with my espresso machine directly through the manufacturer. The experience was beyond frustrating and disappointing. I spoke with Eric at the Kitchen Engine, and 10 minutes later I left with a tangible solution to a problem with a machine I didn't even purchase from him. This helpfulness was consistent w what my husband experiences when he visits the store, more frequently than I. I'm really happy I came into the kitchen engine. Nice looking store with a wide array of kitchen items, pans and gadgets that are fun just to look at. Very helpful staff. I was looking to replace older Calphalon pans and learned about Spokane's own Lloyd pans. They've been great. My wife loves how light they are. They conduct heat well, are non-stick and sell for a good price. Deals often abound. The other day I found they had a super special on a Wusthof classic 6" chef's knife, selling it for half the usual price. Now I've got to put this good cookware to use and take one of their many classes. A real Spokane gem. read more

The BEST customer service ever. I live in Seattle now, but my family still lives in Spokane so I frequent the shops there and my kitchen accessories for Christmas were purchased here. Unfortunately, the wrong attachment for my kitchen aid was purchased - turns out not my mom's fault, but the Kitchen Aid itself- through three swaps and finally a door delivery - my whisk fits perfectly! I used to live in Spokane and loved going to the Kitchen Engine for a number of kitchen necessities. First, if you thought that maybe somewhere in existence was a gadget to peel your garlic, hull your strawberries, chop your herbs (not a knife! that's old news), and you were just not sure where to find it - Kitchen Engine is the answer. With every gadget imaginable as well as the greatest selection (to my knowledge) of DOMA coffee and loose leaf teas you will leave happy. I love DOMA coffee and still order it in bulk, whole bean from the Kitchen Engine when I am in town or have a family member head my way from Spokane. Additionally, the staff is very knowledgeable and the return policy is completely hassle-free. My husband and I purchased a manual coffee grinder and it didn't get the grind quite right for our particular brewing method. No problem! We were able to bring it and select a grinder that fit our needs a little better. Another thing I love is the free samples! Coffee samples are always available when I have gone in. It's nice to grab a mini cup and sip on it as you browse the store. They also sample a great variety of olive oil and vinegar - of which I can't get enough. I could go on and on but rather than keeping your eyes glued to reviews all day just take my advice, read no more and head to the Kitchen Engine. Then you can make up your own mind. read more
