Delicious cheese board, soft inside, crusty and salty outside pretzel roll... Yum! Candied nuts, flavored popcorn... all snacky fun. Several people in our group had Momma Mango Moscato- delicious! Most important was the service - lovely bartender was quick and friendly and told us that the concrete bar was made by a friend from highschool. Gave a sample taste and suggestions (this seems like a no-brainer... but..) willing to visit & kept on working. Not sure why I had never heard about this gem of a restaurant until recently as we are always looking for new places to try. But I'm so glad we found it at last! This hip little restaurant was very busy when we got there on a Thursday evening to meet friends for dinner...we got the last table. While we waited for our friends, we enjoyed the paintings of Cass Oliver which adorned all the walls. Keith, our very attentive server, took very good care of us. My husband is a coffee drinker and was pleasantly surprised to see it served in a French press. I enjoyed a lovely Proletariat Cabernet Sauvignon with my Prime Rib Dip while hubby had the Mac-N-Cheese (I tasted it and it was amazing!). I meant to ask if they made their own ciabatta because it was the best I've ever tasted. My sandwich also came with a salad or soup...I chose a Caesar salad which had a bit too much lemon for my taste but was still very good. The sandwich was out of this world and The Local is my new "go to" place for French Dip! Our friends enjoyed their choices as well...the Turkey & Brie and Pepe's Famous Fish Tacos. For dessert we had the warm brownie with salted caramel and ice cream. O M G! We WILL be back! read more

Menu is limited so easy to enjoy but drink list is long and on tap beer selection is very good The place has a nice vibe for the neighborhood as the name implies. I have seen good posts about the Local so I figured it was time to give it a try. I stopped by for lunch on this visit. The restaurant is located in a strip mall holding the end unit of the strip sitting on State Street. The restaurant has a patio given its location on the end of the strip and was easy to find given its location. The restaurant was very clean and welcoming. The staff greeted us upon entrance and were super friendly, attentive, and nice during our stay. Awesome team!..we had Chris serve us. We started with the trio of tacos (sorry no pictures). The flavors of all three tacos were very good and their homemade Pico was very good as well. The only negative was that the corn tortillas were rather dry. My main course was the beef dip sandwich. The sandwich was filled with great tasting beef, generous portion of grilled onions, and cheese to top it off. The bread was a favorite of mine as the chef put a great "toast" on it which added a crunch and supported the meat, onions, cheese, and jus perfectly. Other chefs could learn a few things here..."toasting" helps!! The salad was good and fresh. For desert we ordered the brownie and ice cream. The brownie had a great crust that allowed the soft inside taste twice as good. The ice cream and caramel made a great pairing with the brownie. We were all getting cranky (ok, maybe it was just me) and we needed a place for a snack and a drink (a nosh!) so we pulled in here. We got glasses of wine, some popcorn, and some shrimp cakes and chilled out for awhile, which was perfect. Refreshed, we went on our way. Our first visit to The Local was a major surprise. Our party of four arrived during happy hour and while the outside dining was full, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience in the dining room. The atmosphere is causal and we all found the food to be very tasty. We started with drinks and a nosh of chips and salsa and followed that up with menu orders including flatbread pizza, a BLT, a prime rib dip sandwich and shrimp cakes. While there were no French fries available with the sandwiches, they weren't missed as salad or soup was included as a side. The service was also very good so all in all it was a very positive experience in what we all agreed was a hidden gem. read more

The Local has a new chef, Kristopher Ott, formerly of Fork and Alavita. Wow. The food. It's so good. My book club met there and we tried several different items. The standouts were the evening's specials, the stone fruit Caprese salad, and the sous-vide pork paté crostini. Both were beautiful, in appearance and flavor. We also loved the house-cured salmon bruschetta, the polenta with morels, the beet salad... I heard the following comments from around the table, "I don't feel like I am in Boise!" (the food being better than expected), "This is the best polenta I have ever tasted.", and "There is not one thing I don't like about this salad." To top it off, they have a well-curated wine list, the service was friendly and attentive, and the chef made a vegan dish for one of us that even this omnivore loved. I had a bite and my first thought was, "This tastes like a food poem." The menu has small and large options, and they are open for lunch and dinner. It's officially my new foodie favorite. This is one of those little gems that I don't really want to write a review for, but they deserve it; so here we are. I found this spot through previous Yelpers (thanks guys). I had it bookmarked to try. It's got a super indoor/outdoor feel which I love. I popped in on a Tuesday night and the place was basically empty. Def. grab a table outside! Our waitress was kind and patient as we looked over the menu. There is an awesome selection of wines, so I decided to go for the flight of reds instead of picking just one. The waitress was knowledgeable in the different wines and I appreciate the way she explained them. The beet and blue salad was a very beautiful plate. Very nicely done. Try this if you love tomatoes, beets, arugula and little crumbles of blue cheese! Hello! Check check & check! The nachos were "okay." The chips were good, but it had very little cheese sauce and like 5 huge chunks of chicken. Not my favorite nachos, but the salsa that was drizzled on was good. Stopped by for a quick beer while killing time. My server, Tiffany, was super kind and very attentive. She breathed life into the place with her bright spirit and positive energy! She was also very knowledgable about the beverage selection. They had a good beer selection with at least 11 different rotating taps. I went for one of my favorites - Lost Grove's Teddy Bear Picnic. The owner (I believe his names is Todd) is also very hands-on and kind! I've seen him working at the bar each time I have stopped by, and he is always cheerful and friendly. I've yet to try the food, but plan on returning to do so! They offer sandwiches with Gaston's bread, which is an awesome local bakery that I love. The clams smelled amazing from the table next to me. And I appreciate that they offer everything from small bites (soft pretzels and meat/cheese plates) to full on dinner (wine braised short ribs and fish tacos). This place truly can transform to fit your dining needs - whether you're looking for a good happy hour place for apps, or a full on dinner. They also have local art for sale on the wall, which adds to the cool vibe. Both indoor seating, and patio (with heaters!) available, depending on your mood. This is one of my very favorite places in Boise. It's got a great vibe. The people are awesome. I've tried nearly everything on the menu and not been disappointed. The steamed clams are the best ever, and I'm not even a big clam eater. The flatbread is always a hit, but the soups are lacking. I was super excited to try this place out, but then was a little disappointed. The food was bland, and mediocre. The flatbread we had was good in flavor, but I'm not sure what they use for the dough, because it was chewy. My friend, who has never sent food back in her life, had to send back the taco trio. She said the meat was like rubber, and was barely edible. We ended up being there for trivia night, which was fun! I'd go back again for some wine and trivia, but not for food unfortunately read more

First: some background for introduction. I'm not a connoisseur, but I like nice things. I've been to The Local 6-8 times over the past year or so, and have never been disappointed. I'd like them to be successful, so feel like it's time to leave a positive review. I'm not easily impressed, but hope this review helps you feel good about giving them a chance. The Setting: They're located at one end of a nice-enough strip mall on State Street. The interior is kind-of a mix of rustic and industrial chic - grey, knotty wood paneling, taupe-painted walls, and vaguely interesting light fixtures. They have art (paintings or photography) by local artists, which changes and tends to be interesting. The space is not large, but grows by maybe 50% when the large, overhead door is up and the patio is open. The music tends to be mellow and eclectic; you might not notice or care, but it has sometimes been Shazam-able and has added to my experience. I was there accidentally for pretty-good live music one night. It seemed like the duo were known to the audience, and the community feel was enjoyable. The Food and Drinks: The menu is limited - check it out online. Not everything interests me, but I have enjoyed *everything* I have ordered. The Taco Trio, Fish Tacos, and Southwest Chicken Salad were quite good - with a touch more heat than expected. The Beet and Blues Salad was simple, but excellent. The Mediterranean Salmon was pretty good, too. I happened to be here for Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, and their version of a grilled Caprese with balsamic was over-the-top good. Today, I had their Cabernet Braised Short Ribs, which also made it into the excellent column. The ribs were tender without being fatty and were well-seasoned. The Brussels sprouts and carrots were simply seasoned but cooked exactly right. The mashed potatoes came with plenty of blue cheese sprinkled on top. The whole thing was well-balanced, I guess. I have only had one dessert, but I've had it twice because it was perfect: blackberry cobbler a la mode. Tart, fresh berries, served hot with just a touch of cinnamon, with sweet creaminess provided by the melting ice cream. For drinks, they have a bar in the back, signature (or featured?) cocktails, local beers on tap, and a wine list which seems pretty legit. I may be forgetting something here, but I remember 3 wines: 2 of them being memorable and all what you would expect for the price - $8-$14 a glass generally, I think. The Service; After listing off entrees, it seems I may have been back closer to 10 times. I think I've had good-enough service twice, and above-average service otherwise.in general, I have experienced adequate attention and appropriate friendliness. Servers seem organized, and food comes out without a delay. (This level of coordination seems difficult for other venues. Some plates seem to take a little longer, but that seems like it's the way it should be.) Extra service points go to management, who have helped with getting me cashed out previously, and to the new owner, who stopped by, took my plate, and asked for feedback today. All in all, folks at this place seem to be putting in a solid effort, the resulting experience keeps me coming back. read more

I have been looking for a place that is along the State Street corridor that's both tasty and not over the top expensive. We live close to the Local and rode our bikes there last night. We were greeted immediately and the large garage door to the outside patio was open. The weather was gorgeous yesterday, so being open to the outside added a lot to the already attractive restaurant. We were greeted by a very friendly and upbeat server. She offered us the menus and something to drink. We tasted a couple wines, but she also brought us a drink that is sweet and served with a couple slices of fruit. Drinks were delicious (wish I remembered the name) We ordered the "popcorn of the day" which was sweet/salty and Asian. Super yummy way to start the meal. From there, we ordered our meals. I had the fish tacos (about $10) and my gal had the Salmon. Both were delicious. For dessert, we had Creme Brulee. The server was kind, happy, attentive, but not overbearing. The best French dip sandwich I've ever had, hands down (and I've had a lot). Made with perfectly cooked prime rib, accompanied by a perfect Caesar salad. We were a lunchtime group of six, including a vegan, and everyone was delighted with their meal. The room is lovely and airy (and open to the outdoors when the weather is nice), and they feature local art on the walls. The service was outstanding--something that is rare in those post-pandemic-ish times. Would absolutely return to The Local. read more
