Let me start by saying that I wish I had such a place in my home town. I had their bacon cheeseburger, and yes, it is "only" a cheeseburger, but it was one of the best I've ever had, and it was more like having a burger to go with my bacon - it was loaded with bacon that was quite satisfying (and yes, I could taste the beef, too). It was messy and sloppy as a really good, loaded burger usually is. I only wish that I was staying longer in the area so that I could return to try some more of their down-home offerings. Just as impressive is the staff working there. Every single person I encountered was super-friendly and hospitable. A big food kind of place. I order grilled cheese with chips thinking I could do that kid thing and put my potato chips in the cheese sandwich...except they were fresh cooked potato chips! That's the kind of place this is. My colleague go the full side biscuits & gravy - it was indeed full size. Lots of people who come in to meet old friends, and workers grabbing a warm mid-day meal. There seems to be a lot of regular customers whom the workers connect with, making it a warm environment. They have good specials everyday they are open. We happened across this family diner by chance and after noticing the great Yelp reviews decided to try it for breakfast. Small place with an adjoining, wierdly sloping room. The staff was incredibly friendly and seemed to greet everyone by name. Seat yourself and within seconds the hostess was grabbing your coffee order. We ordered a Big D Breakfast platter and a breakfast sandwich with gluten free bread. (So happy they had gluten free options!). Our breakfast was delicious. At first I was a little disappointed that the sandwich didn't come with some sort of side for the price. However, I quickly realized this sandwich was built with 2 sausage patties and loads of eggs and cheese. I ended up not being able to eat the whole sandwich (too much food!) The only recommendation that my partner had was the hash browns weren't cooked well. There were a lot of them, but very lightly cooked (no brown crunchiness on them at all). As well, his breakfast was so big, he left part behind as well. One thing to note, the menu prices on yelp are definitely not correct and should be updated. Both of our meals were $13-$15 each, but you get a lot of food for the value. We definitely look forward to coming back and trying this location again very soon! read more

Found this diner in Mt. Vernon via Yelp, and it has incredible classic diner food. I got the insane patty melt, hubby got a tasty, homey cheeseburger, onion rings were yumbles bo bumbles, and they make delicious homemade Ranch and 1000 Island for dipping. I loved the hand-cut fries (Dick's-esque) and had to throw trash in the basket eventually so I wouldn't eat them all Hubby isn't big on "soft" fries - so keep that in mind if you're looking for golden-crispies. Patty melt was big enough to take half home, along with almost a whole side of onion rings between us! The diner has been here for decades, but new owners just took over a few years ago. Stopped in this little jewel for lunch after visiting the tulip fields. It's sandwich shop in the downtown area next to the courthouse that seemed to be full of locals. Both were huge and super tasty. Thick cuts of bacon and tomato with fresh lettuce made hers a perfect option. As for the Patty Melt, it came with not 1 but 2 juicy patties, Swiss cheese, grilled onions, and 1000 Island dressing (which I don't always find on Melts at other places). As good as the ingredients were, what impressed us the most about our sandwiches was the bread! It tasted like homemade artisan bread! Definitely not something one typically gets at a diner. I've lived in MV my whole life and I've never been to the Lunchbox Diner because I stereotyped it to be "just another Mount Vernon Cafe", which I wouldn't recommend to anyone (having worked there). I almost didn't come in because it was an hour before closing & as a chef, that last hour can be grueling with closing duties and end-of-shift orders. I'm glad I chose to go in. Walking in, the restaurant is packed. They have an open kitchen which means we can watch them cook and see how they handle business. The waitress was very busy, so a gentlemen who looks like he may be the owner (who was also assisting the cook) took my order and greeted me with a smile. I thought this place was designed for "Old Timers", but I was very much mistaken. It's a very wholesome all-American diner that hosts folks of all ages. What impressed me most? The cook! As someone who has hired cook upon cook upon cook upon cook in the Valley, it is rare to find someone who has a professional attitude. This guy hasn't muttered a single complaint when people walk in to the restaurant 10 minutes before closing. He has 5 tickets on the line and he's knocking them out like a champ. I don't even see him make a face even though the restaurant is scheduled to close soon and the place is packed. Bravo. I never thought this place would ever get such a low rating from me. It always has decent service and fresh and delicious food, hence the second star, and fair pricing. Except for today. My friend and I each ordered the same thing, the chicken salad sandwich. The only difference is I ordered it without bread and without onions. The server asked if I wanted a piece of lettuce under it, and I shrugged and said "sure," thinking it would be like a garnish, which is what it appeared. So I was surprised to learn my order cost more than my friend's. When I questioned the server, he said he was helping out his mom and didn't know why mine was more. So on our way out, I asked at the register and was told ordering a wrap was always an upcharge. Except I didn't, I merely asked for no bread and was offered a piece of lettuce. It makes no sense: hers was a beautiful, fully assembled sandwich with two pieces of bread, chicken salad expertly spread, with fresh tomato, onion ... and lettuce! Mine, a piece of lettuce, a tomato and a scoop of chicken salad. I received less in materials and labor but was charged more. Sure, only a buck, but the principal is just wrong. If I go back, I guess my lesson is to order the sandwich, scrape off the chicken salad and waste the bread. Doesn't sound like a good option to me. read more
