I came to Frenchman for the spotted cat, but ended up here instead... and I'm so glad for it! There was no cover, just a one drink minimum. We ordered a Bloody Mary and a dirty gin martini, both of which were delicious. (The dirty gin martini was only $9 too!!) The space is spacious and had great natural lighting and a variety of seating. The live jazz band, Sunny Side, was wonderful and the lead singer was fantastic. I'm rating the location based off my experience at a mixology course we purchased via Groupon. Upon entering, we were asked to wait until the class started, so I went to the restroom. The restrooms downstairs were nasty and missing soap. I told the hostess, but I'm not sure if anything was done. It perturbs me for restaurants to have filthy restrooms when they are serving food. I mean how are your servers washing their hands? The vibe is nice...there was live music playing and the musicians were very talented. The place is also very huge!! The course was held upstairs, and was very informative and fun. However, they overbooked the class so the bartender was unable to allow us to make our own drinks - she made them. Best stop on Frenchmen's Street. After walking up and down the street, I'm so glad I came here. Great music, good food and drinks, and no cover or lines before 9. I had such a great time at Maison during my best friend's bachelorette party 5 years ago, and I loved it just as much when I took my husband here last month. Every time I come here, there's always a different band. All the bands are really good and I'm in awe as some of the members play multiple instruments. I stayed for over 2 hours and there were a couple of different bands that performed. I enjoyed the food, the Penne Primavera hit the spot! The fusilli pasta smothered in creamy alfredo creole sauce with a healthy dose of broccoli, thinly sliced onions, peppers tossed in was delicious. My husband enjoyed the red beans and rice. The drinks were fine, the Peach Vodka was kind of sweet and my husband liked the Sazerac. If you get here on the earlier side before 9, you don't have to wait in line and can get a table. Kermit and I ended up going here last Sunday to see Herlin Riley during Nickel-A-Dance. Once I arrived at the bar I wanted to purchase a drink; However, the barmaid acted as if she's not aware of an ID. I presented her w| my passport ID card and she would not allow me to purchase a drink. Clearly she doesn't own a passport or is just ignorant of different forms of ID's. We had a few drinks here one night while visiting New Orleans and checking out Frenchmen St. and we were impressed with the bartender and loved the jazz band that was playing. We came in as the dinner hour was coming to a close so we missed the last call for snacks unfortunately. The place was packed and the band was on point so we were lucky to find a couple seats at the bar. The bartender came right over and opened a tab for us. He told me they make their sweet and sour in house along with many other liquor infusions. Over the course of the night he made me two fantastic amaretto sours and my husband was pleased with his captain n cokes. The band played for about an hour longer and had a wonderful vocalist that kept us wiggling in our seats and tapping our toes. As we were leaving another band was setting up. This was a great hangout place and especially enjoyable spot for us to start our evening. The drinks were expertly prepared, delicious, and very reasonably priced. We stopped in here for a drink and quick bite to eat, plus the live music was a nice draw. I don't remember who was playing but it got me shimmying! My friend ordered a Bloody Mary, and while I haven't enjoyed any that I had tasted so far, this was so amazingly good and well balanced!! The drink on its own was so delicious, but the garnishes were pretty good. It came with bacon, tomato, olive, pickled green beans, and a cube of mozza (though the mozza didn't add anything for me). We also nibbled on crawfish bites, and the mac n cheese. The crawfish notes had a decent amount of crawfish in there, and was a nice snack. The Mac and cheese tasted more like a creamy white pasta, not much cheese flavour, no stringyness. I can't really vouch for the food, but I liked the music and the Bloody Mary! read more

We came here at the end of a nice walk down Royal Street and into Marigny thirsty and in need of a brief respite. We were lucky enough to walk into The Maison before it got too busy to find a seat at the bar or table close to the stage. As we were ordering drinks, the jazz band "Sunny Side" was setting up. We stayed for their entire performance and had a great time listening & watching the musicians pour their souls into it. Ended up walking into The Maison on a Saturday night out on Frenchmen St. It has multiple floors. The first floor featured a live band playing jazz. The second floor was basically a balcony, and had a view of the band from the opening in the middle. The Long Island iced tea i got from the bar on the first floor was fortunately quite strong, as it prepared me to dance to the Hispanic music being played by the DJ on the top level. I came back in November and had the gumbo and it was completely different. Instead of soupy and good, it was lukewarm and more goopy, more gelatin like. I'll try it once again, but if it's like the latter and not the former, I may not be back. I came back tonight, on January 3rd and was informed by the waitress that they have a whole new kitchen staff. I had a cup of gumbo, a cup of red beans and rice and a cup of New Orleans mac & cheese. The red beans and rice was hot and good, the gumbo was thick and gelatinous, like last time, what a shame. And the mac & cheese was mostly warm. Came in here because the place looked lit from the outside. Turns out there was a live performance in the house. Me and my friend stuck around for a little bit to watch the performance and then headed to the bars to get a couple of drinks. We then went upstairs to the third floor. And what do you know?! It was Latin night with a live band! WOOOOOO!! The band played salsa, bachata, and merengue. I personally thought that they played too many merengue, but from scoping the room, it didn't look like there were many people who knew how to dance salsa or bachata properly. Don't get me wrong, they were having fun, but they were more swaying to the music vs. dancing bachata/salsa. When we decided to leave, access to the 1st floor was already shut down - the stairs led directly to the exit. However, we still needed to close out our tab so we walked toward the front to get in. At this point the lady bouncer was being a dick and not allowing us to get in. My friend pointed out that we needed to close our tabs so she finally let us in, but as I was walking in with him, she put her hand on my chest to stop me from proceeding. I told her that I was with the other guy and she just said "no". Whatever lady. What did you think I was going to do? So I found out that Macy Gray was having a live free performance here so I gathered my squad and dressed up for a girls night out on a Tuesday night. We had so much fun. The place was packed like sardines downstairs so we made it upstairs where it was crowded but still moveable. After getting out drinks, we found a spot behind this older couple. It was a great spot looking right down the stage. Macy came out late so the older couple decided to leave so we end up closer to the rail so that made it so much better view of everything. There is two bars. Downstairs were packed so going upstairs is the best way to get faster service. read more

Listening & watching the NOLA Jitterbugs was a highlight of my trip. I had been anticipating this visit for a year+. We came off the ship & were able to check in our bags, which allowed us to be in the maison for when the band started to play. To get started my wife had a loaded bloody Mary & I had the corpse reviver #2. The drinks were pricey & just ok, but I was there for the live swing band & dancers which were free. Of course we tipped them. They performed their butts off. The group were a chill & happy bunch. In between songs the main guy would talk about each member, give you a brief background & as the morning progressed you kinda knew enough about everyone to feel as if you made new friends. Before each song they announced where the song might have been popular in its day & what dance went with it. They also gave a little history on the dance & prepared us for what we were about to see. Personally I enjoyed every moment & as lunch time came & passed I realized that I had to move on the quest to drink & eat my way through the FQ. On my last night in New Orleans, my friends and I found La Maison thanks to the phenomenal music that we could hear from across the street. Our mission that night was in fact to find a club with live jazz, not really so difficult to do in this town, obviously. What I really like about La Maison is that it's larger than the Spotted Cat down the street where you're really going to have to be OK with being on top of strangers that surround you (the music is so phenomenal there, though, you really don't care). We were able to grab a table, despite it being a pretty crowded night. Drinks were good and didn't seem overpriced considering that there was no cover to get in. But what we came for was the music and damn, did that band deliver. The stage set-up was good, afforded a decent view and the sound was pristine. Check out their calendar, however, for reoccurring events, as they seem to have a varied schedule. After the band was done, there was an open mic/jam thing that wasn't really what we were in the mood for (although if we didn't want to check out other places, I'm sure we would have stayed and enjoyed it). La Maison, you're on my list of NOLA favorites, for sure. read more

Great venue! We did a little NOLA style bar hopping which meant: GREAT MUSIC! This was certainly the biggest club of all. We were lucky to see the Brass-A-Holics while there. They had everyone going and were simply amazing! This club has a stage towards the back and one up in the front. The first night the Brass-A- holics played in the back and there was salsa in the 3rd floor. The second night there was another band in the smaller, front stage and a hip hop club upstairs. The 2nd floor is more of a lounge area. Stairs can be steep and tricky after a little drinking. Not that I would know anything about that. Drinks are very well priced and they have a nice selection. If you have to use the bathrooms use the ones on the 3rd floor. The ones on the 2nd floor are basically a urinal and bathroom stall right next to each other. Unisex. Awkward!!! The ones on the 3rd floor are tiny (how does that pass building code?) but a much better option. Forget using the sinks, take antibacterial spray instead. Trust me. read more

We were greated at the door by the most pleasant hostess of this trip who had our reservation, which we had just made that morning, right at hand. We had the pleasure of being entertained by Molly, Earl, Mitch and Niles of the New Orleans Jazz Vipers pouring out great hot jazz tunes and hot renditions of some big band tunes. Our server, Gwen, had an infectious smile and the perfect amount of attention... we never felt rushed nor ignored. She was spectacular all around. We both had the crawfish etoufee and it was out of this world. If you're looking for your first foray into Frenchmen Street, Maison is a great spot to start, touting fantastic live music, drinks, and food to boot. My boyfriend and I came here for a later dinner around 8pm on a Tuesday and really loved the vibes here! Lucky for us, we were able to snag a high table in perfect view of the band (Gregory Agid Quartet) after someone cancelled their dinner reservation. Didn't have to wait more than a few minutes. We ordered the crawfish and alligator bites combo and the burger sliders with cheese and bacon to share. The sliders really hit the spot. It's great if you're not looking to eat a big meal but still want something substantial. For drinks, we had Abita Purple Haze, which the waitress told me was a customer favorite after I asked for fruity beer recommendations, and a cocktail I don't remember the name of. Purple Haze was fantastic and is now one of our favorite beers! Maison was such a great place to hang out at night in NOLA, either with your bae or a small group of friends.
