Is it a convenience store? Is it a restaurant? It's definitely not a restaurant. OK, it's a convenience store that specializes in food, plus there are some things that they "make to order." There, are you happy? Midway is a pretty bad place to eat at the moment. The main food court after security (unhelpfully and confusingly called Central Market) is under major construction, so even if you do find decent food somewhere, there aren't many plain old tables to eat at. So even if you get your made-to-order--ha!--food from a place like The Market (which isn't located in the part of the airport known as Central Market, for those of you keeping score at home), where are you going to eat it? At your gate, or at another less-crowded gate. Why so few tables, Midway? But I promise these two stars apply only to The Market, which is overpriced in an airport-expected way but whose stickers nevertheless shock. Plus it's laid out strangely. I was super hungry in Midway and needed a quick bite so I went in and grabbed a bagel and cream cheese. I was the only customer in there at the time so I was helped very quickly. I ended up paying like $6 for a toasted freezer level bagel and a small container of cream cheese. The bagel tasted super stale and you could tell that it was definitely made in a factory and kept frozen for a while before it was served to me. Nothing about the meal was good, I ended up throwing out half the bagel. Later, as I was walking around the airport I saw some other food options selling bagels that looked fresher for way cheaper. The lady put together the breakfast bagels and toasted it for the customers. She was very friendly and efficient. WHAT I ORDERED Bacon egg cheese bagel $6.50 incl tax $5.99/breakfast bagel. Honestly not too expensive for a bagel. I've paid over $8 at Vegas airport and wasn't that good. This Chicago bagel ingredients are proportioned accurately. Decent amount of cheese, like 3-4slices of bacon, cooked egg in the middle. It was very toasty hot, fresh and delicious. A bit salty prob bc of the bacon, maybe drain more oil and salt in the bacon before putting on the bagels. It was a decent breakfast bagel at this southwest terminal. Menu describes "crispy bacon" on the egg cheese and bacon bagel. The very chipper blonde lady then puts raw uncooked bacon on top of the egg and bagel into an oven for 2 mins, ( I asked her if it was raw bacon and she said yes) I don't know at what temp, though I tried to look. The bacon came out crispy on the edges but not in the middle, the nice lady let me look at my bagel and the bacon was still very pink and white in coloration. I declined. I stopped by here earlier today while on a layover at Midway. Since I had eaten poorly a couple of days prior I was actually looking for a healthy-ish type place whenever I stumbled upon The Market. What initially drew me in was the salads but I eventually opted against them due to the lack of proteins on them. The Market is a grab and go type place without any seating. What makes it different than most similar places at the airport is that it has an has an inside with different counters where you can order hot sandwiches, coffee and more. On this day I decided to go with the Pesto chicken sandwich. The menu described it as grilled chicken, havarti and tomato with pesto on a ciabatta roll. I watched as the person working the counter went to a refrigerator behind her and grabbed my sandwich from a giant bin or similar pre made sandwiches. She proceeded to put it on a tray and then I waited while she took the orders of the 4 people after me and also put them on the same tray which she eventually put in the oven. So from order until I had the sandwich in my hand was a bit longer than expected but still wasn't horrible. After leaving The Market I quickly found an open gate to sit down and eat my sandwich. It was warm to the touch which was nice and looked good as well. Sadly it looked a lot better than it tasted. The bread was a little soggy from the sandwich being premade with the pesto on it. Meanwhile the pesto itself had very little basil taste which is a shame since that's why I bought it in the first place. At least the chicken and cheese tasted reasonable. Still, $8.19 for the ~6 inch sandwich left me wanting more. The bottom line for me is that I probably wouldn't stop by here again in the future. My sandwich didn't impress me much and there are better tasting places for your money at MDW. read more

I got the chicken bacon panini (because out of their 7-8 menu options they only had 3 available) and it was pretty dry and had maybe a 1/4tsp of honey mustard on it to bring any form of moisture. My experience here apparently was not as bad as others. They have an interesting model for serving sandwiches. Everything pre-made, when you order they stick the sandwich in the oven with several other orders, they all come out at once, and then they serve them to you once they are cut and wrapped. Very efficient for them but apparently problematic if they forget to get your sandwich on the tray. Woman had been waiting for 10 min, with others in line behind her getting their sandwiches before her, even though I heard her tell the "cooks" at least twice that they had not given her the sandwich yet. Ugh. Sandwich itself was ok. Decent sourdough bread, ok meat and cheese, but not exactly well put together and not nearly enough horseradish sauce on my roast beef sandwich. And as always at the airport, more expensive than it should have been. On balance, ok for a quick meal for me (but that woman I mentioned before). read more

I was hoping the sandwich would have been pressed like most paninis so the bread would not have been soggy. After scanning yelp and finding a wasteland of 1-2 star lunch spots, my goal went from "obtain yummy lunch" to "don't get giardia". I'm pleased to say that, as of now, the market did not give me giardia. The sandwiches are slightly cheaper than sit-down spots, and it was quick. The Cuban was bland and slightly soggy, I assume from being pre-made. If you are looking for great food, you should have eaten before you left for the airport, shame on you because Chicago has a brilliant food scene in general! I will make that mistake again especially here at Midway Airport. Like most airports you have to be careful where you go to eat. The sandwiches may look good sitting in behind the glass, but the only thing they do is get a pre-made sandwich, probably made sometime this morning throw it in a warmer and charge you $10 bucks. Overall from 1 to 5 the sandwich was about a one and a half - meaning it's edible (that means I ate about half of it) - needless to say it could've been a lot better. In fact if they were a Subway sandwich shop that would've been a lot better. Please save your money and go elsewhere. While this is definitely a quick place to grab food, it is not worth it. The sandwiches are pre-made, so they take them out of their fridge and essentially stick them in the microwave. It looks like an oven, but don't be fooled! The bread doesn't get toasted, just hot and soft. I had the chicken pesto sandwich: the chicken was so dry and the pesto wasn't very flavorful. Along with the sandwich, I bought a bag of chips and a bagel and cream cheese (again, the bagel was microwaved) that came out to almost $20. I wish I had read the reviews before stopping here to eat. The designer of The Market has an eye for style, but no common sense. They put absolutely no thought into customer experience. My bagel and coffee were subpar, which is to be expected at an airport, however it was the experience trying to order and pay... at 3 different counters... that was time consuming and confusing. I can't imagine how The Market found its way into an international airport. It lacks efficiency, convenience and practicality. Why would you ever price water over 5$ outside of a sports venue. The prices here are straight gouging the unsuspecting customer. I can't tell if it's to pocket the extra or if the store actually thinks to stay profitable at the prices being charged for a short walk over would be a dollar or two cheaper. Steered away from the food as it's a little over common prices but nothing as ridiculous as it's stapled good. 12 dollars for a Cuban and 9 for a cáprese. Whatever you can do to avoid the store do so because it seems to be a money trap. There are various options right nearby including a dunkin donut, big and little's and even the pizza place is cheaper on all fronts and the food quality seems to be better overall. We used to be huge fans of potbellies and were extremely disappointed to see that it was no longer there. And we decided to try this place. What a horrible experience. We ordered two sandwiches the turkey Panini and the chicken sandwich the turkey was dry slept together with two pieces of stale bread and the chicken with bacon sandwich was a greasy mess. There were three people standing around behind the counter one was cutting the sandwiches and the other two were watching. There was no system in place to decide who ordered what.
