I really wish I lived closer so I could come to this place more often. This place has some of the best shawarmas I've ever had. I had the chicken shawarma and look forward to sampling the rest of the varied menu items each time I travel over to Concord. The staff was very friendly and greeted us as we came in the door and quickly took our orders. Despite a little bit of a lunch rush, the food was prepared very quickly, fresh, and piping hot. The decor was definitely interesting and gave the patrons a bit of a conversation piece and scenery to look at. Not only was the food oustanding (by both of our opinions), but the prices were great too. Both of us left feeling full and satisfied for under $20. We went here today, just trying to find a quick bite and had a fabulous lunch. Nothing fancy but a much better choice than fast food. The service was great, with very nice people behind the counter. They worked hard to make it fast and did it with a smile. We saw a lot of people ordering takeout but some were eating in which we did. We both ordered the chicken shawarma wrap and it was excellent! Huge portions, two people definitely could have shared one order. Tasty and good quality ingredients for very reasonable prices. I grew up in Chicago where I could find great Gyros. Moved to Ca 40 yrs ago and have yet to find a gyro that is half as good as I am used to eating in Chicago. Found this place and gave it a try. Only had the gyros. These are the best I can find so far in East Bay. Spoke with Kaleem, the owner. Nice guy. He was polite and friendly and was delighted I found the gyros to be the best i have had after leaving Chicago. The meat was spiced just right, the pita bread (a critical component) was the fresh and the correct type. Everything on it was perfect and in the right proportions to make for a great experience. Ordered the lamb wrap late on a weeknight. I was worried they might not have everything on offer because it was pretty close to closing time but they were welcoming and said anything was available. The lamb wrap was different from what i expected (texture was like finely ground meat, not chunks or strips of meat) but the flavor was very good. I'd go back to try more. read more

I've been here twice, but the first time was just for baklava and to admire the artwork - the bathroom is a must see (I'm not being facetious! It's great in there). Today, however, we stopped by after a friend reminded us how delicious it was. We each had a dolma (I regret not having more dolmas), some baba gannouj (it came with good pita bread. Not the best I've ever had, but upper tier for sure), and half a shawarma). I loved putting the baba gannouj on the shawarma. It was like they were meant for each other. After, we were stuffed, but we decided to split a falafel ball since my husband had never had one, and that was the correct decision. I have never had falafel so delicious and warm and crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside... it was truly a texture and flavor delight (I am REALLY big on texture)! Will definitely be getting dolmas and falafel every visit from now on, no matter what. Combo wrap was pretty good. Very meaty! Maybe I should've went with the chicken or just the lamb first before the combo wrap; But I thought it was pretty good. Used to love this place. Went in to order a falafel. $8.25. Dude makes it, looks good - food quality not an issue here. He rings up the order and charges me an extra dollar. Prices are posted on the wall, but apparently there was a new $1 per item increase, bot posted or mentioned. I left. Had I not been watching the register or unable to basic math, I would have been ripped off. Just a dollar, but still a shady business practice. I hope they get this worked out. This place has been around for a while but I've never cared enough to try it out till yesterday. I ordered the gyro combo, with a Greek salad and hummus as my sides. The order came with a dolma and some pita bread. The total came out to about $14. I enjoyed the gyro meat - served in small chunks on top of some rice pilaf. However, the Greek salad and hummus was pretty ordinary. I didn't like the dolma, but that's due to just taste preference. It was a good experience overall and while the gyro was the best part of the meal, I feel that $14 was a bit too much for the entire lackluster combination. If I come back, I'd omit the sides and get a gyro and some fries instead. read more

Tried this place yesterday for the first time. I've been reconnoitering the outer East bay for a good schwerma spot for some time now. So I popped in on a lark. First I must say that my tummy is a little bit off today. I ordered a gyro wrap from them. No hot sauce just regular. The one thing I noticed was that the vertical Gyro rotisserie was not turning. Just cylinder slab of grey meat sitting there. Not being cooked nor refrigerated. But they were slicing off bits of it and cooking it thoroughly. My first inclination was to not go through with my order. I've had bad food poisoning and I never want to go there again. I do not have that. I'll continue. So I received my order since it seemed to be cooked thoroughly enough to kill any pathogens. However when I got back to my vehicle and started to consume my gyro wrap it started dripping oil. A lot of oil. Some even got on my seat. This should have been strained or dabbed before putting in the wrap. Also if the if the gyro rotisserie was being used properly and not just sitting there at room temperature the meat would be cooked, oil dripped off and ready to go. I'm not understanding why the aren't implementing this equipment the way it was intended. So in closing I think the excess oil is giving me trouble today. It was tasty. But too messy and the vegetables were not fresh. I'm going to return some time and see if the issue is resolved. Fingers crossed. read more

Three red flags that should have prevented me and a friend from eating here: #1. A nearly empty restaurant at 7pm on a Friday. #2. Paper plates and plastic forks contributing to landfill waste, but with prices that should dictate porcelain. #3. East Indian employees who say, "The owner is Greek but he ain't here." The salads tasted old and stale, and the cooked entree was not what I ordered. I asked for lamb kebab, but was given lamb shawarma with some overpowering funky sauce drizzled over some mystery meat fit for a canine. The pita bread served with it was broken in pieces. That was the worst excuse for Mediterranean food I've ever had in my life. I got about 3 bites into a chicken wrap and had to throw the whole thing out. It was completely unpalatable. The main flavor was the charcoal burn taste on the lavash. The chicken taste like dry, shredded cardboard without an ounce of seasoning. I could barely find cucumber, lettuce, tomato or any sauce in the entire thing. It was almost like space food. Burnt space food -- the kind that is dehydrated for 20 years until you need it for an emergency, just to survive. I tried to salvage a piece of tomato but it was pale and limp and taste like they had sourced it from the garbage bin behind Safeway. Really icky. Horrible place. Even the mango carrot juice tasted like orange tang - the stuff astronauts drink. Maybe they should just change their name to SPACE FOOD! read more

Wow! This place is so awesome. We came here for a quick dinner before seeing a movie, and I was pleasantly surprised. I got the supreme falafel wrap, which has potatoes and eggplant added, and it was amazing. I don't tend to like eggplant, but theirs was cooked perfectly. My dad ordered a beef and lamb gyro with French fries (which I stole a few of). He is a regular there, so he enjoyed everything he ordered. I can't believe how good the fries were! I needed a quick bite before my hour drive home from the Bart, and this looked like just the place to get some grub and head out. Inside its pretty quaint despite being in a strip mall. There are murals painted on the walls (even in the bathroom too!) and multiple small tables for dining. No one was there save for two other customers besides myself, so it was essentially empty during prime dinner hours - never a good sign. I ordered the falafel wrap with fries and a couple dolmas. The wrap was ok, the first 4 bites were mostly wrap and no falafel, and in general lacked any real memorable flavor. He asked me if I wanted hot sauce when they were preparing it, I did, but I couldn't taste it at all. The only flavor of note in the wrap was the hummus and the falafel was dry. Fries were a nice portion, not too many but not too few and were fine. Dolmas again were fine but had minimal flavor. Price was affordable, but there's just something missing from the food - nothing was bad, but nothing was very good. Mediterranean fare isn't known for being bland, but disappointingly, that's what I got. read more

This has to be the worst Mediterranean food spot I have been to. Wanted to try it out since it's in the area that I usually eat but I will never come back. Walking into the deli atmospheric vibe, the guy behind the counter looks like he's having the worst day and just doesn't want to serve anyone for the rest of the day. I asked for a Gyro with fries (one of the simplest things to make), he repeats "Gyro and fries." The funniest thing about it, he forgot to make my fries!!! I didn't want to wait for fries because I would be done with the gyro already. My gyro was over-cooked, the pita bread was burnt, and the meat tasted like char. The Mediterranean is a popular eatery in the Park and Shop strip mall in Concord (near Fry's). It's really more of a deli than a restaurant, with a very casual style to it like many Falafel stands. But besides the vertically roasted meat slabs for Falafels, they do offer a good variety of other dishes, mostly Greek. Salads and Dips: Tabbouleh, Bakdonsieh, Greek salad, Hummus with Pita, Baba Ghannouj with Pita. These are all about $4 for 1/2 pint and $6 for a full pint. The Shawermas are like Greek burritos, with slices of Lamb or Chicken, with tomatoes, onions, parsely, maybe some zucchini slices served with Tahini sauce all wrapped in a Lavash flat bread wrap. Lamb $7.95, Chicken $7.50. I make my own Shawerma of sorts at home with Trader Joes' fixins. I use whole wheat Lavash, spread Green Olive Tapenade on it, add onion slices, capers, sometimes add spicy Indian relish, and smoked salmon slices, then roll it all up and eat for a meal or a snack. About $2. Being surrounded by water and having a zillion islands, you would think there would be more popular seaffod dishes in Amreica at Greek or Mediterranean restaurants? Someone educated my on why ther isn't. (Besides the Moors a 1000 years ago with their goat herds). They also have Kebabs for $7 - $8., and combo platters for $11. The Dolmas are $0.50 each. Baklava and Turkish coffee are available for after, but somehow this place isn't conducive to lingering. The murals are painted all over every surface that isn't tiled, and they are great. And there is mediterannaen music spritely playing on the PA system. So this place should have a better feel to it. But some how, it is just another ho-hum Falafel place in feeling. Perhaps an energetic staff with personal attention would help make this place feel better. But what do I know? It is all Greek to me. read more

I am by no means an expert on the subject of Mediterranean food, but I know what I like and I likes this place. The lamb shawarma was juicy, tender, and packed with a flavor that seeped out of my pores for hours after I was done eating it. The hummus was wonderful as was the dolma, cucumber salad, and the spinach-feta pie. The mint yogurt drink was a bit much for me. If they had it in a much smaller container I could have finished it but not in the ginormous cup they gave me. They totally had the same song playing on a loop when I ate here. By the third loop my Concord buddy and myself were moving our heads to the beat and reciting the chorus while we chowed down. maybe a lot of fellow yelpers will disagree with me on this review. But truly, I don't see how this place can get more than two stars. I've eaten here several times over the past few years. The Dolmas are always mushy , with uncooked rice inside. the shawarma's is REALLY dry, hence their excessive use of sauces, and finally their falafel is very oily. sure they have what seems to be good prices, but for the kind of food they're serving, it's just ok. The place on the other hand is well put together, and the bathroom is clean. other than that, they're several mediterranean food joints in the concord/Walnut creek area that are a lot better read more

The Mediterranean is situated right by a Mexican, Korean, and Noodle house restaurants. The choices you have to make. I usually have the chicken schwarma when I visit. I thought the schwarma was stuffed in a pita bread but the Mediterranean wraps it similar to a burrito. Strange! The taste of the special tahini sauce with the chicken, cucumbers, tomato is very good. On this visit I also had a baklava dessert, which was very tasty. At the Mediterranean they offer falafels, schwarmas and combination plates. When you first walk in you see a standing roast of lamb on a vertical spit. Plus they have a large assortment of salads.
