I went here last weekend, and I wish the food had been forgettable. Unfortunately, the overwhelming impression was dry. Not a lot of filling in the tacos or the enchiladas--more green than red sauce on the enchiladas, which isn't saying much aaaaand was a bummer because the red was much better. The sweet corn tamale was overcooked and dry. Beans lacked flavor and were dry. Don't worry--it's also very overpriced. Oh! And! Service was not good. Three rapid fire are you ready to order within five minutes of being seated after the yes it's our first time here server intro question. No refills on water or drinks--amplified the dry theme. One star for the music and lighted flower decor. One star for a passing staff member who asked to see if my mom needed help getting out of the booth. I had a really awesome dinner here. The decor is beautiful and Mexican themed with lots of fun, pop-y colors. Parking is available, although the lot was pretty full when I arrived for my reservation on Friday evening at 5pm. Definitely recommend reservations. We had a large group of 11, so they sat us outside. There were misters and shades which helped make it a little cooler. Our server was wonderful, very attentive, fun and friendly, especially with such a large group! I immediately ordered the build your own margarita in the souvenir piñata cup, this was such a fun experience. There were lots of sour, fruity candies to top off your drink. For food, I ordered the foot long quesadilla with chicken. It was yummy, and definitely enough for two meals! There were dancers that came out periodically too for some entertainment. First time here and friend had made a reservation for our small group (6 of us). We were seated out on the enclosed patio, which is nice. The music was very loud, which was a bit distracting but the overall decor was fun and festive. They have a pretty large menu with lots of choices and everything is a bit on the bouche side. Beautifully decorated dishes when served, for sure! Some in our group tried a couple of the cocktails...wife had the Mangonada and loved it. Found it well balanced and she loved the addition of the tajin. A couple of others also had the Saguaro Margarita and Margarita Rosa and both loved their drinks as well. They are served with flowers and just a beautiful presentation. Drinks were $14-$17 so a tad pricey. I ordered their signature 3' Machete Quesadilla, which was beyond words in terms of presentation. I asked for the birria to be added and it was the perfect addition. This thing is huge and obviously I shared it, eating about three pieces myself. It comes with three dipping sauces including a birria, which was tangy and just delicious. Wife had the Tour of Mexicano, which comes with a chicken enchilada, a cheese chili relleno, fried quesadilla, and a beef taco. Again, presentation was beautiful although she was "meh" on the flavors. She did like the relleno but found the other items just "ok". Didn't care for the rice and beans. I was really intrigued by the sweet corn cake mentioned several places on the menu so asked for a taste; got a side ($3) and I loved this! Reminds me of the dish they serve at a place in Tucson. I could make a meal of just this! We ordered the flan for dessert, which is interesting because it has roasted pineapple on top of it. It was good. Beautiful new restaurant in Chandler! It was exciting seeing them make their tortillas. It smells delicious! There is some confusion at the hostess station. I waited for a while before someone seated me. The decor is Mexican chic with all the neon. Complimentary chips and salsa. They have a Michelin star taco made with prime rib eye. Chips are served hot and the salsa is flavorful, not too spicy with layers. For those who say YES to mocktails, they have a few nice looking options. The Michelin star ribeye taco was pretty good. The ambiance was beautiful and definitely had that upscale, bougie vibe, but unfortunately the food missed the mark for us. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup and could barely eat it. As a big fan of Chef Joey's other restaurants (Hash Kitchen, The Italiano, The Sicilian Butcher), I was super excited to check out the Chandler location of The Mexicano -- and let me just say, it did not disappoint! I was so happy to see Afro Latina performers represented -- we love cultural inclusivity and representation! We just went here for mother's day. There was a line to get in (i assume they gave everyone an 11am reservation time and that's when they open). They have an outdoor area with misters but we were glad to sit inside- way too hot outside. The service was friendly, the food was good- good portion sizes. The frozen margaritas were delicious and definitely not "weak". The atmosphere was like any regular restaurant- not too loud or especially "party" like. They gave moms free plastic margarita cups to take home. Had a nice time! One remark: they use lard in their refried beans and in their flour tortillas, so non-pork eaters beware! Warm and friendly faces greeted us and Simone sat us right away during the dinner rush, granted we did have a reservation so i highly recommend booking on ope table ahead of time. I wish I could leave three and a half stars because I'm torn. I'd been to the PV location for lunch and enjoyed the low-key vibe. This time I brought the family on a Saturday night: loud music playing so we couldn't really hear each other and at one point two giant robots came out to dance-lol. That's not our family's vibe but I can definitely see the draw for a lot of people and the restaurant does a great job in setting a festive scene. Service was also glacially slow. We waited a long time for everything. I definitely recommend making a reservation if you want to come here - we heard it was a two hour wait without one. We tried a lot of different dishes: birria bao buns, a variety of tacos, and the one foot quesadilla. While we all enjoyed our food for the most part, prices are high and portions are small for the price point. I ordered one chicken tinga taco ($8) and it was compact. We also indulged in the churro cart for dessert. It comes with six churros and three dipping sauces: chocolate, tres leches and caramel. Very cute presentation and the churros tasted good but they would have been much better if they'd been warm. But overall we were satisfied with our dishes. Chuyito at The Mexicano Chandler is literally the best. From the second we sat down he was super friendly, helpful, and just had the best energy. You can tell he actually enjoys what he does -- he's personable, fun, and makes you feel like you're hanging out with a friend instead of just being served. He gave great recommendations and was on top of everything without being overbearing. The birria tacos were SO good -- crispy, flavorful, perfect. And the Mexican Candy shot?? The Mexicano is amazing. I am happy they have a location at the east end of the valley. I was a regular at their PV location. The restaurant and bar are perfectly laid out and decorated. The decor is bright and vibrant. They have a great menu and their Happy Hour menu doesn't disappoint. We decided to sit at the bar. Our two bartenders were awesome and very attentive. Very cute restaurant! When we walked in, there was a big crowd of different groups of people waiting to be seated or get their name on the waitlist and the hostess seemed very flustered. Once we got her attention and got on the list, we only had to wait a few minutes but there were tons of open tables so that was a little weird. The service was a little slow once we were seated as well but both the hostess and waitress were very nice. The food was pretty good. I really liked the tacos. I didn't care for the rice or the salsa that came with the chips. The prices were reasonable. I think if you want to go for the fun drinks, it's worth it. We came here for restaurant week and was able to try a variety of dishes! The food and service was outstanding! We sat at the bar and started with a spicy margarita, which was very flavorful and not too spicy. We then ordered the Caesar salad, served in a cold bowl with fresh ingredients. Next we enjoyed the shrimp cocktail, served as a delightful ceviche style cocktail with tons of shrimp and fresh avocado. Our entree options were three enchiladas served with beans and rice or three tacos served with beans and rice. We ordered one of each and they were delicious! To round out the meal we had the churros, served with three dipping sauces (chocolate, carmel and horchata milk). Shout out to our bartender Valentine, who was very attentive and friendly! I first tried this place about a month after it opened. I was excited because I really love Sicilian Butcher down the street and Chef Joey knows how to run a restaurant! I had some fish tacos and enjoyed them, but felt like the sides of beans and rice were far too small to complement the main entree. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the food and the chips and salsa that the bartender brought out were excellent. Flash forward another month or two and my wife and I finished wine tasting at Cooper's Hawk on a Saturday afternoon and wanted some food to line our tummies. I suggested we head over to The Mexicano, not knowing what was in store (cue the dramatic music!). The Mexicano offers happy hour deals in their bar area every day from 11AM-6PM. We ordered some Modelo drafts and some $6 Flautas and enjoyed the hell out of them, plus the house chips and salsa. And we were hooked. We kept returning after that initial HH trip to try other options. The Nachos with Birria were delicious. The Shrimp Ceviche was too! I noticed that the HH bar menu mentioned all you can eat Taco Tuesday. I had to make a mental note. This was too important! I brought my cousin, who was in town visiting, plus a longtime friend. Then I brought my wife. Then I came by myself a few times. The tacos are D-Licious! I prefer the pork and beef tacos, but the chicken ones are very tasty too. Plus the fantastic chips and house salsa. The corn tortillas are the best I have ever had. Taco Tuesday's at the Mexicano should be a right of passage. They're a revelation! The staff, including the bartenders are top notch. The restaurant is beautiful inside and out. Check Joey has done it again! I was excited to come try this place out when I saw that it opened. Came on a Friday at 11 am and got seated inside. The decor is amazing and the margarita bar looks fun! The food was not as good as the presentation. We ordered the ELOTE GUACAMOLE and it was ok. A little too sweet for me. For the main course, server recommended for the 3 tacos combo THE MICHELIN STAR TACO, chicken tinga and Al pastor. The other 3 tacos was Chicken Tinga, SINALOA VAMPIRO and COCHINITA PIBIL. It is sad to say the Michelin Star taco was just bad. They charge an extra $1 and there's barely any meat on it and put a giant green onion on top of it. All you can taste is the green onion. I removed it to find barely any meat on it. They also messed up on my order and gave me the carne asada taco instead of the al pastor but they brought me out the Al pastor later. Sadly to say, the carne asada taco tasted a lot better than the Al Pastor. Chicken Tinga is ok, too much stuff on top of it. I tried the Sinaloa VAMPIRO taco and it was good. That was worth an extra $1. The COCHINITA PIBIL was mediocre... lacking taste. The rice and beans are not good either.... They rice tasted stale and the beans are bland Overall it was disappointing. I had gone to the north Scottsdale location when they first opened and was highly disappointed in the enchiladas because the sauce taste like ketchup to me, my friends wanted to go to the Chandler location so I tried it again and was so pleasantly surprised! Food I didn't come here planning to judge the food, but it made itself hard to ignore. Flavorful, fun presentation, and surprisingly well put together for a place that feels like it's one margarita away from turning into a nightclub. It's not fine dining, but it's also not some chain restaurant pretending to be cultured. The sweet spot lands somewhere between "fun night out" and "why is there a guy in a robot suit?" Service Our drinks took so long to arrive I started to wonder if they were distilling the tequila in-house. Food came first, then the waiter reappeared after we'd practically licked the plates clean. Credit where it's due though, the guy had charm. His self-aware jokes about the wait were somehow enough to keep it from feeling like a disaster. Still, charisma doesn't make a cocktail show up faster. Ambience This place is chaos in a fun way. Bright lights, loud music, dancers, and yes... giant glowing robots that make you question your sobriety. It's not relaxing, but it's not trying to be. Hubby & I have wanted to try the restaurant since we heard it was opening in Chandler. We always give a new place a few weeks to work out the kinks & the newness wear off. We got to have dinner here last night. We got lucky because the newness of the restaurant has not worn off yet! We got there at 5:00 & it was packed. I tried to make a reservation, but there were no reservations available for months during the time we like to eat. The bar is open seating, but there weren't any open seats so we put our name in. They said it would be 20-25 minutes. I say we got lucky because shortly after we put in our name they stopped taking walk ins. We sat outside, but it was not bad since the misting system is great. Our server, Valerie, came to our table promptly. They bring water, chips & salsa. Hubby got his favorite beer on draft, Dos Equis. I got a sangria. The chips were good, but some of them were greasy. The salsa was excellent! There is a taste in it that we couldn't place, but really liked. Maybe roasted tomatoes? Hubby said his beer was good. I didn't love my sangria. It was pink in color & tasted like pineapple juice. It was a light pour. I had 2 & could have driven no problem. Normally that is not the case. I really wanted to try the potato tacos. I love potato tacos when they are mashed potatoes. They are only on the happy hour menu. The happy hour menu says it's only available in the bar. Valerie went above & beyond. After she took our order she came back & let me know I could get the potato tacos! You get 3 tacos with rice & beans. So I changed my order from chicken fajitas to the potato tacos. Hubby got the 3 taco plate that comes with rice & beans. He got the al pastor, Cochinita pibil, & the Baja fish taco. His favorite was the al pastor. A close second was the cochinita pibil. He said the fish taco was okay, but bland. I was majorly disappointed with the potato tacos. They looked great, but there was very little potatoes in them. It was only about half an inch strip a the bottom of the tacos. One side of each of our tacos was soggy. We both ordered sour cream. They charge $2 for a very small amount. I prefer my refried beans more mashed than whole beans. No biggie. I scooped some out & smashed them on my plate. It does take a little while to get your food. It's definitely a more upscale place. I was also disappointed that the womens restroom had 3 stalls & 1 was out of order. Come on, call a plumber so customers aren't waiting to use the restroom! We came in for drinks and ordered nachos at the bar. Unfortunately, the service experience was really disappointing. The bartender was busy making drinks, which I completely understand, but the server who initially took our order never came back to check on us. Our nachos came out with the white cheese not even melted, and we spent the entire time without silverware or napkins. Our drinks were empty for quite a while, and no one checked in. At one point, the bartender/server admitted she had been in the back cleaning and said she would get someone to remove the nachos but no one ever came back. We had to leave so we can eat dinner somewhere else I get in your cut, you wanna go home and honestly we were forgotten about. If your cut and don't want us give us up. The last time I was here I had something called the best fried beef f*cking quesadilla taco. And I thought it was tasty back then so I ordered the same thing now. And it was just blah, very lackluster. The chips and salsa were good because the salsa has a very distinctive smoky flavor to it. However, they do charge you two dollars if you wanna order habanero sauce to make it spicy. I also ordered a crispy beef taco that was on happy hour.I asked the bartender if the taco shell was store-bought or made in house and she promised me that it was made in house. I did not utilize it, but I did take a short video for everyone. I got the happy hour spicy margarita with to tajin. I know it's a happy hour margarita, which means that it is watered down. But jeez Louise it was really watered down. And the tajin was very skimpy. Once I finished that, I thought I would order a glass of Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. To my surprise, they only have Chardonnay or a Merlot. I must say I was disappointed in that. Back to the food. As you can see on the picture, the salsa was delivered with salsa on the side. I know I'm being picky, but I used to work in the restaurant business and you should always wipe your plates before you send them out for service. My taco arrived somewhat scattered so that was disappointing as well. It's attention to detail that makes the difference. The flavor Profile for the hardshell crispy beef taco was sweeter than I expected. I did not care for it much. The rice and beans were good though so that's a plus. Again, I really want to like this place but it really fell flat this time. If I go back, I will try something else. Maybe that's what the problem is. read more
