Hotel restaurant where we were staying ( the Joinery). Two different experiences, one day apart. First breakfast our server was a bit scattered, had to retake our order. Served coffee in a styrofoam cup and water in plastic cups. These were not to go. Tastes crappy in styrofoam and plastic... I ordered the Millhouse omelet with chicken sausage instead of bacon. Lots of mushrooms, sausage and tomatoes and delicious. Home fries well seasoned and yummy. My husband got the chicken and waffles which were supposed to have a kick in them, but they were sweet and even a request for additional honey brought no changes... so hot sauce was added ( sarachi).. Yesterday, different server, drinks in glass/ ceramic, attentive and friendly. Both ordered the millhouse omelet , but less contents than the day before and not as good. Potatoes were highly salty and not seasoned otherwise. A skillet with improved ones were brought to the table after we asked for a new order ( they were the sides to this dish). Should be a 4 star review, but giving them a 3 due to inconsistency. Obviously a different cook? Regardless, maybe management will take notice and correct.

The Speckled Egg provided the upscale and elevated breakfast, that was a nice contrast to the rustic and local breakfast we had the next day. Our waitress was friendly and professional. After some deliberation, I went with a bowl that included eggs, chicken sausage, sweet potatoes and a nice garnish of dill. The dill surprisingly elevated the whole dish. My wife enjoyed an omelette. Coffee was also quite good! Nice start to a day of sightseeing! (The restaurant staff gave great advice about the nearby tourist attractions)

He was courteous, well spoken and friendly. We sat there for about 10-12 minutes. No one approached the table. We looked over to what appeared to be a bar area and we saw two servers standing there talking and showing each other their phones. My wife said, "With our luck, one of those two is our server." Sure enough, when they were finally done talking, one came over to our table....no smile and a big audible sigh. She asked what we wanted to drink, we gave our order and she returned with our beverages. After another 10 minute wait she came back to take our order. When asked about a certain dish, came another big sigh, eye roll and and a rote description of said dish. The food arrived and one of the orders was wrong. Another wait to get her attention. We asked for the item to be redone as we had ordered it. And she even asked how we wanted it! You got it...another eye roll and a big sigh. At least she was well oxygenated! The dish came back with the very same results. On that issue we gave up. Then came the wait for the check. Once again the two servers were chatting, no heads turned to check on their tables. My son went over to get the check. When the check arrived, it was attitude city. She accused us of picking on her because she was only a server. It's obviously how she saw herself. We then asked for the manager who was quick to side with the server. She said that nothing seemed to satisfy us and that we had a problem. IN SHARP CONTRAST. I have been to the Speckled Egg on the South Side many times. From the Host/Hostess to the servers to the bus staff, everyone had a smile, chatted with their customers, laughed and it was always a great experience. The manager came over since he recognized me from being there many times and we chatted for a minute. We are talking Night and Day. Completely two different experiences from server to management styles. To me there is only one Speckled Egg and one complete waste of time (Downtown).

Thank me later! ) What really made the experience even better than just having great waffles, was the people. General Manager Sharon and Assistant Manager Kelsey were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and genuinely seemed excited to help. The owner Len was EXTREMELY responsive to my email & text inquiries (which honestly is rare these days.) As a small business owner myself, I notice and appreciate that kind of effort immediately!! This place is absolutely underrated. Between the amazing staff, the aesthetic Instagram/TikTok worthy storefront, and food & drinks that are ACTUALLY delicious (because sometimes places only nail one or the other ), they've got the full package! Plenty of seating inside & out. clean bathrooms, self-service kiosks but they also have a register if you are lazy like me. Parking can be a little challenging, but there are several nearby garages that make it manageable. 10/10 experience. So grateful we got the chance to try smashed waffles. There was a friendly gal at the door taking names and numbers. I could hardly believe the wait time but decided to put down my name and do a little window shopping during the wait. We were eventually called and texted to let us know our table was ready. Our table was in the very back corner, next to a group of girls loudly talking about their drunken escapades the night before. It was entertaining to say the least. Our server was super friendly and accommodating to dietary restrictions/modifications. I ordered a Turkish Benedict on gluten free toast.... So. Good. Amazing flavors. My daughter got the croissant avocado toast which she loved. I also got a pistachio latte and was pleasantly surprised to see the used pistachio butter and not a syrup. It was lovely. I had to keep my child from drinking it all! While the wait was long, it was definitely worth it. The space is smaller than I imagined. The food came out fast for how packed it was. It's worth it!

Everything from the sandwiches to the scones to the sweets were tasty. They weren't the fanciest I've experienced at afternoon tea but they were good! That being said, they advertise it as high tea which is NOT correct. That's an entirely different thing (more of a supper) and is not interchangeable with "afternoon tea." What they have here is afternoon tea and I wish they would advertise it as such. Aside from that pet peeve of mine, using the wrong terminology, it's a nice spot and I would recommend it if you're in the area.

You get a perfect 19th century setting, which makes for the perfect ambiance. For the tea, I had green tea and hot cinnamon, and both were excellent! The cinnamon takes the cake for best tea with excellent flavor, especially with the hints or orange. Our food was delectable. The pimento cheese sandwich and crostini were fantastic. The chicken salad stuffed gouger was divine. The scones were the best I've had. Crunchy on the outside, while warm and fluffy in the middle. I could have eaten ten of the cinnamon scones. Excellent cheesecake and cream puff. The star of the show was chocolate mousse on a pecan crust. Just yum!!! Phenomenal service, tea, and food made for a wonderful afternoon high tea!! We will be back.

The cool vibe restaurant is tucked away up a short flight of stairs on Filbert Street. It gives the place a cozy, hideaway feel with brick walls and murals. It's pretty popular, so you might have to wait a few minutes for a table, but it moves pretty quick. The menu focuses heavily on crepes and French toast, and they do both very well. I went for a savory crepe that was loaded with eggs and topped with a rich sauce and diced vegetables. It came with a side of fresh fruit which was a nice touch. We also ordered a sweet crepe to share. It was beautifully presented with chocolate drizzle, berry sauce, and a massive pile of whipped cream. The coffee is solid too. Verdict: This is a consistent and reliable brunch spot. It was the perfect way to kick off my trip. I will definitely be back next time I am in town.

But the star of the show for me is the Shakshouka. I have gotten it the last 2 times I went. You also have to try their Dirty Chai. My only critique is the hostess at the front. She appeared overwhelmed by her role and was not warm. We were actually told by the waiters that "she is serious about her list". Which would be great if she managed it effectively. When I brought concerns that we had been pushed down the list 3 times for other parties. She responded "well, how do you know that" to which I responded "we watched you take their names down after ours and sit them before us". Her response was to shoo me off and tell me to go find a table myself; to which I did. But what a poor way to manage your stress, responsibility, and consumers. On the bright side my waiter/waitress was awesome per usual.
