Whenever I am in town we have to stop and eat here before we start our day. I usually have breakfast waffles or french toast that I love. Went in for some pancakes yesterday and realized how much I love this comfortable breakfast spot...have been going constantly for several decades it's a neighborhood staple. Great tasting pancakes and Belgian waffles. They get you seated right away and they have breakfast specials for around $5 that fill you up. Good coffee also. The waiters are friendly and will accommodate special orders with no problems. Good place to start your day. This place is a little bit hidden, but once you enter it is small and homey. It is quiet and nice to come here for breakfast when you want a peaceful and non crazy busy place. I love going to unique places that are not the usual or chain restaurant. The meals are pretty big and for the price it is worth it. I ordered the gourmet omelette and was satisfied. I found this place because of Yelp! And I wasn't disappointed. Bill definitely puts on a show with his sarcastic, funny personality. It's like everyone knew him except for us since it was our first time. But I guess now we are "part of the family". The food: my wife ordered the French toast special and she finished it all! She really enjoyed it! I had the Mañana tacos! Sooooo good! Bill told me to add the Cholula sauce to every bite and it just added to the flavor. It was a great choice! What a nice surprise . We took our car to Fairway Ford and was told this place was very good. It really was! I had the gourmet omelet( it was delicious) my wife had the eggs Benedict (eggs were cooked to perfection the ham was delicious but she was disappointed in the hollandaise sauce). I've been around the area for a while, decades, but it was my first time here this morning. I got the bacon and eggs. It came with choice of toast and either hash browns or O'Brian potatoes. I went with the former and tacked on coffee. $11.10 total. The eggs were good (scrambled) and there were four slices of bacon when most places give either three or two. Crisp enough, but not quite horizontal when held up, so not burnt or overly greasy. My sourdough toast had enough butter where at most places I have to ask for more or take some from those having pancakes. My coffee was getting checked on and refilled often. My only complaint was the hash browns were a bit burnt which made them kind of dry, but not enough of a complaint to bring up, though others rightfully could. The decor is cozy and baseball related due to ties with the Campanis family. The place is clean. It was about 0845 when I was there and about 1/3-1/2 full. It wasn't boisterous or noisy like the near-by Original Pancake House or Two Sisters can be, which I appreciated. They get the fourth star under the assumption the hash browns were a fluke. I'll go back to try other things. The place is of the old school variety, independent "greasy spoons" from a by-gone era, my meaning that in the best sense of the phrase. read more

Came here with my boyfriend and his mother, who had been coming to this place for years. They hadn't paid this place a visit in a long time, so we decided to all have brunch here. Not very good. I went here once, and then later when I lived right around the corner I never went again even though to get to anyplace comparable meant driving. They aren't even open for dinner (which frankly is a little bizarre for this kind of restaurant). The one time I went, I had about 45 minutes to kill before catching a bus at the bus stop across the street (I was just visiting at the time, with no car - haven't taken the bus since but that's another story). I ordered a chicken sandwich (should be simple right?) It took several minutes for the waiter to come by to take my order, and it took way too long to prepare it - which could have been a good sign, but it ended up being a chicken patty. The kind of thing you buy in bulk from the frozen section of the grocery store. And, it was on a cheap roll. Now, I don't mind eating that kind of cheap food - I'd typically buy higher-quality ingredients for myself at home, these days, but I ate a lot of that kind of stuff growing up. What I do mind is over-paying for it. I don't remember how much it cost, but it was enough to pay for a good quality, freshly made chicken sandwich someplace else. Maybe if the restaurant didn't have "gourmet" in the name I would feel differently. The waiter never came by to check on me, and then took forever with the check. I ended up missing the bus. We've been there four times and we see the same folks each time. The regulars who come here are loyal and seem to know each other. The service here is 5 stars. The staff is friendly, efficient, and genuinely happy to see you. The food is 3-4 stars as far as diner fare is concerned. Serving only breakfast and lunch (and dinner on Fridays), the food is always hot and prompt. It is just what you expect when you order. While the gravy isn't the best, the french toast is just right. It's creamy and crispy in just the right balance. The breakfast Manana tacos are a hit. For lunch, the tuna melt is a classic representation of what it should be, including being served on rye. This is tasty, honest, locally-owned diner fare. You feel welcome when you walk in, comfortable when you're there, and content when you leave. This is three star food with five star attitude. I wish that the food was as good as the service. Unfortunately, it's not. I had a pretty basic breakfast, ham and eggs. The ham looked and tasted like a piece of processed meat. It had a somewhat slick surface and did not look very appetizing. It didn't taste very appetizing either. The eggs were a little rubbery, but not bad. Instead of hash browns, I opted for fruit. It looked like it has been sitting out for a while. It didn't look very fresh. Rather than being crisp and cold, like fresh fruit should taste, the texture and taste were almost mushy. Again, like the ham, very unappetizing. I was full after finishing my breakfast, but not in a good way. It's the kind of full that makes you wish you wouldn't have eaten something, just to take away the feeling of being hungry. I had the Huevos Rancheros and my honey got the chorizo. Both entrees were flavorful, hot, filling, and priced accordingly. Always wanted to try this place and finally got the chance on a semi-holiday (hubby still had to work). It's hard to see the place and they're only open for breakfast and lunch. Decor was the baseball sports theme and it does look like it's been there for some time. What's more important though is the food. Kiddies had the kids pancake - came with eggs, 1 pancake (shaped like Mickey Mouse), 2 bacon strips (or sausage); price also came with milk or juice. I got the mañana tacos (chorizo and eggs with corn tortilla), which came with hash browns (perfectly crispy without having to request it;); it also came with refried beans and salsa. There are plenty of little breakfast places scattered throughout Orange County, this one just does not meet my standards for that local breakfast spot, or that go to place that everyone has, anymore. Let me explain. I have visited this place many times when I was young and being a fan of baseball I give them many points for their unique decor. But back when I was young and would come here the food was really good. It puzzles me that people are saying right now "You always get seated right away". In the food business that is not necessarily a good thing. About fifteen years ago you had to wait for a seat because they would be packed, because like I said the food used to be good. Recently I went in and there were two other people in the whole place...not good for business. I ordered the typical American breakfast, eggs, bacon, hash browns, and some kind of bread. I honestly could not eat it all, and not because it was delicious, no no no. The eggs were cold, the hash browns were burnt, and the bacon was charred, and not in the good way. I used to love this place, it used to be the local hang out with my family but I do not know why they have slipped up. The prices are still great which is redeeming, but the food needs to go back to the standard. The one reason that I am not giving this place a 2 star is because of what my girlfriend had. She is a big fan of corned beef hash and they had some of the best looking hash I have ever seen. Chunks of meat mixed right in with the potatoes and she loved it. I on the other hand was stuck with mostly an inedible breakfast. She had a good experience, I however did not. So to be fair I am sticking this place into the middle of the grading scale. Were they good at one time, yes they were. Are they now, hit and miss. That is the biggest issue with small places. You need a good standard and great consistency. The food does not have to be amazing, it just has to be good enough to be in that comfort zone so the people who come every other day or more know that there money is going to a safe bet. I would love to see them improve because I do like this place. They just need that consistency. read more

So a fan of this place. the staff is super friendly and the food id good (most of the time). I do enjoy the big biscuit breakfast here. and the manana tacos are good. The portions are big so you should be good at least until lunchtime. A few bummers are that they have funky hours and there are times that the food just falls way flat. They are usually a four star restaurant and when they may miss the mark the do try to fix it to the best of their ability. I would have to say that the staff makes this a four star place.
