Got here at 5:10pm and still customer in the place and door open but employee/kid said place closed. I told him well it's to go something quick. He said nah man we closed. Really I drove all the way out here. I mean not for this specific place but if it's tourism running your business you need to some how help out. I just wanted some breads and maybe a coffee or juice. Something for my 2 year old. Unprofessional and not caring staff. Definitely not a 2,3,4, or 5 star. If closed then have doors closed. I hate English muffins- but I can't get enough of theirs!! Their "late bake" bread is wonderful, the early bake is a bit hard in my opinion but other people enjoy it. They make good coffee drinks & breakfast items (like breakfast sandwiches). read more

Can't say I'm too impressed. They do have baked goods but it's more of a quick breakfast or lunch stop. The premade sandwiches are stuffed with lettuce to bulk them up. No soy milk on the counter for the coffee. The tables were dirty, and remained so for a while, even though the staff weren't busy. My girlfriend and I shared a pain au chocolat at Model, and took home a small loaf of the bacon bread. Both were OK - the pain au chocolat was average, and the bacon bread, which we took back to our hotel (and ate w/ some fresh cheese from Trader Joe's) was good at first, but the bacon taste quickly became overpowering and eventually was just kind of gross. I'd definitely try something different were I to go back again, but honestly there's not much reason to; Model didn't seem to offer much more than any other bakery or coffee shop out there. Addendum: The sourdough bread used by Taylor's Automatic Refresher for their Wisconsin Sourdough burger comes from Model, so that definitely gives them a bump - the deliciously toasted bread is part of what makes that burger so mouth-watering! read more

After a delightful visit to Main Street Books nearby, it was time for a cup of coffee and a treat. Nice to find sweet and cheery Model Bakery! The black and white checkered floors, the shelves of delicious smelling baked goods, and the eager staff had us sitting at a window table people watching before we knew it. Stopped in on a rainy Saturday for a pastry and coffee. The coffee was terrible but at least hot. The cranberry and buttermilk scone was dry and uninteresting The pan de chocolate was tasty but without the flakey/buttery components. We stopped in here mid-morning Friday the 14th for coffee and pasty. Nice little bakery. A good selection of bread and pastries. The staff were very friendly and patient (not rushing us to decide). I always stop for coffee and pasties when visiting the area. The coffee is perfect and the baked goods delicious. It is a nice beak from wine tasting. Try the chocolate rads, oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies. These are my favorites and always wonderful. They also serve an open faced smoked salmon sandwich that is rather tasty, and filling without being heavy. A nice light lunch on a hot day. The location is great. They are situated in a cute little shopping area of St. Helena, amongst several stores that are great for browsing and picking up a little souvenir. I'd expect a more hygienic surroundings for such a well publicized place but seriously handle your fly situation. And keep in mind when tourist rave about this place it's because it's the only ONLY bakery on Main Street. They are using Blue Bottle coffee and espresso and selling BB beans, so the coffee is the highlight here. The food is still so-so. We recently ordered breakfast and my husband's croque madam was the driest and blandest version he's ever had -- likely because they put nothing in the sandwich but prosciutto (which was not moist) and a scant amount of cheese -- no bechemel (I know they have the fixings for Béchamel back there -- milk, flour, and butter). Don't order this one. My huevos rancheros were better, but still not great. I asked for a bit of chorizo on top, which they did, but they forgot the black beans (which is an important component of the dish). Their english muffins are good, but overly pillowy for my liking. I like crispier muffins. The indoor seating is ridiculous because you have people waiting in line to order and waiting in line to pick up their food (the food and drink delivery is quite slow in my experience) and there is nowhere for those people to stand other than directly next to you sitting at your table. I don't really care to having several behinds in my face while eating. I'd skip Model and go down to Yountville and wait in the line (yes) to buy pastries, etc. at Bouchon Bakery. read more

Ok, so I am not rating this place on the actual bakery or their decor or anything like that. It is their English muffins that I have fell in love with. I know, people can't believe how excited I get when I talk about these English muffins, but this is not like no other. After a 24 hour eating and wine-drinking rampage, I really did have to snag some iced coffee on our stroll downtown. Before I knew it, my boyfriend had already ordered a carmelita bar, and I was fighting with him for the last bite. The cookie-esque bar was at least 1 1/2 inches thick, and covered in crumbs and surrounded by thick, chewy carmel. Not too too sweet, but just right to enjoy all of it (or in my case, half of it.) I also saw other customers endulging in chocolate mousse-looking deserts, and a strawberry tart or shortcake (I was trying to use my best spy tactics, so I apologize for any misinformation.) Model Bakery has been one of my favorite to go spots before I go to work, and the variety of bread and breakfast there is incredible! I would say I love the uniqueness of it and how incredible the food is, but I think they have been inspired by local stores nearby... don't get me wrong I still love Model Bakery, but I used to be a regular at Dean and Deluca and a wide variety of grab and go salads in Model seem to be the same as those in Dean. I love to see my favorite recipes back, but hate to see them take other ideas from older local businesses. The English muffins are perfect for a morning treat. They are soft inside with a crunchy, buttery, grainy/salty outside. Wonderful with their homemade raspberry jam! They are a bit pricy: $2.50/muffin. We also had some of their cookies... Also very good but expensive for a cookie-$1.50 for one chocolate chip cookie. We visited both the locations in St. Helena and also in Napa (Oxbow Market), and they are both nice. They are both really small and get very crowded during rush time. The baked goods and breads are delicious. The baking staff knocks the socks off everyone in the valley. It's really that good. It's my first stop on Saturday morning's when I'm in the valley and truly what I look forward to. Unfortunately they've expanded their selection outside of baked goods which is too bad because it takes away from the original premise and causes longer lines when one encounters those ditz-headed new money dingalings trying to decide if they want their non-fat latte with foam or not. I called ahead to reserve a bag of the yummy muffins and the person took down my name and phone number, and we discussed me coming in for certain before closing, and I confirmed I would. After finishing lunch and a short walk in Yountville, I called back to let them know I was on my way, and the (same) person said that they had already sold the bag they reserved for me. They said that "too many people" were asking for it, which doesn't make sense, because the last time I was in their store, someone walked in close to closing time and also took possession of a reserved bag of muffins. Another "reason" she gave was that I did not put down a credit card number to pre-pay, but when on the phone the first time, she mentioned I did not need to pre-pay, since I was committing to come in before closing. She also could have provided the courtesy of calling me back to ask whether I was coming in, since she had my cell phone number. Word to you Yelpers, put down your credit card number if you reserve via phone. Terrible experience for me, and I only get to go to Napa/Sonoma area once or twice per year, and they sold out the last time as well. Left the area for my day trip disappointed with the last muffin sold to the person in front of me in the Napa location and the last bag taken from me at the St Helena location. Come for the english mcmuffins! I always have to buy at least a bag of them when coming to St Helena! They have a limit of how many bags you can buy which is 4. One bag comes with 6 of them for $12 pretty pricey but worth it! Best english mcmuffins ive ever had. You can eat it with butter and jam or make a breakfast sandwich. On a recent gastronomic tour of this relatively small town, a friend and I stopped in to see what this bakery had to offer. We gazed in wonder at the plethora of baked goodies, freshly made salads, sandwiches, and more, finally settling upon a small peach galette. The crust was perfection and the peaches divine. I promptly went home and bought ingredients to try to replicate it and was not wholly successfully, but I will pursist until I am. I am VERY surprised at the less than enthusiastic rating for this place. We stopped in a Friday afternoon for a quick snack before tasting. After MUCH deliberation I decided on a slice of their homemade veggie pizza with goat cheese. They put it through a warmer and what came out on the other side was pure heaven. Seriously, no exaggeration. This was the best pizza slice I have ever had. I loved that the dough was just perfectly thick and chewy but not overly oily as a lot of bakeries tend to do. It has fresh peppers, tomatoes and onion and the goat cheese addition was really was put it over the top. I'm glad they don't have a whole pizza of this readily available because I probably wouldn't have mowed through it. The pizza was so great I got a fresh baked sourdough loaf to take home. The only disappointment is that they are so far away that I can't go there weekly to get these treats. The sourdough lasted me a couple days - making the best breakfast sandwiches ever. read more

After an afternoon of wine tasting, I needed some caffeine to perk me up. The place is located conveniently on the really cute strip of downtown St. Helena. Nothing in the display cases really enticed me, so I went for a medium iced vanilla latte. I know prices are higher in that area, but it wasn't worth $4 to me. It wasn't well blended, and it just tasted like ice coffee with a lot of milk in it. The set up for the counter was also a bit awkward. After seeing marketing on their new cookbook, we decided to stop by as we were driving through the downtown area to/from wineries. Toasted, the english muffins were very good with the butter. Was not a fan of the tart strawberry jam. Chewy and fluffy - they're larger, almost the size of donuts. No frills bakery..not sure how everything else is, but lots of food traffic going in and out even around 3-4pm.
