    pan-seared scallops
    Nat P.

Came here for the first time and it did not disappoint! First all, I love how remote the location is. Right in the woods over by Skyline so it makes the drive quite fun. Just look at the restaurant inside. It just surrounded by trees which makes it so warm and cozy. Such an intimate vibe that feels like you are in another world. We got the three course prix fixe which was delicious! Started off with the pan seared scallops and the Texas quail. The scallops were perfection honestly. It was very light and buttery at the same time. I honestly was close to ordering another one of them because it really hit the spot. The texas quail was very interesting, but the salad that came with this dish was the star. It paired really well with the quail. For entree, we got the grilled venison loin and their off menu special which was the 16oz New York Steak. The venison was amazing. It was medium rare and it was just so smooth when you cut into it. It mixed so well with that vanilla parsnip puree that was included. The New York steak was also just so good I could not stop eating it. The best thing was also the mushrooms that they actually forage here in the area. It was just another added bonus to the dish! For dessert, I got the panna cotta and their off menu dessert, the German chocolate cake. Just devine! The panna cotta was the best way to end the course. I left wanting more! And that chocolate cake, WOW. Just so rich and decadent. Service was amazing and each staff was so friendly and attentive. Tip: Parking can be difficult. You may be able to park in their small parking lot or may have to park across the street right on Skyline.

When in the world did this place exist! I never even heard of it until my friend had her wedding there and I'm so glad she did! What a hidden gem. The best wedding food ever! Then my friend told me the chefs are ex Michelin chefs! What?! No wonder. The lobster roll and scallop blew my mind. Better than any I've ever had. And you can tell they know how to cook when the sourdough is made to perfection with the crunchy fall apart exterior and the soft chewy inside. Not to mention it's out in the wilderness so it's such a peaceful way to enjoy life. I will say getting there was a pain! I did not anticipate such a crazy windy drive. But I would suffer again because the whole experience was magical!

This review is long overdue but I am still thinking about how incredible our experience was at mountain house. The restaurant is beautiful, the food was presented beautifully and tasted even better, and the service was phenomenal. We were celebrating our anniversary and our host and waiters went above and beyond in making us feel special. I especially appreciated that not only were there vegetarian options for each course, but the vegetarian options were actually delicious and unique! I find so often at nicer establishments like this one, the vegetarian alternatives are underwhelming, if they exist at all. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to celebrate or just enjoy a lovely meal!

The view was amazing, I really liked the quail and how it went with the salad. It wasn't too heavy and not too light. I got medium rare (not a steak connoisseur but it was one of the top steaks I've had.) The portions were a good amount and I wasn't able to finish it all so I took some home. My boyfriend got the pistachio cake and I liked how it had a nice light nutty flavor.

    Always on point!!

The Mountain House is a restaurant that takes you back in time to a peaceful, tranquil setting in the forest among towering trees. It's a short 25 minute drive from Half Moon Bay to a place far different than the waves and sand below it. Set in the forest it makes its name with excellent service, a rustic environment, and food offerings of superior quality. We throughly enjoyed our cocktails, the bread with whipped butter that we absolutely loved, and a prefixed menu with options that we really found enjoyable. The quail - amazing as well as the heirloom tomato Burrata salad. The salmon, very nice and they kept the skin on at our request. The Venison, nicely done, great reduction sauce. The rib eye unfortunately was the only miss here as it didn't seem like a good cut or quality piece with far too much fat. The dessert was excellent, and we loved so many parts of this experience.

Truly a magical wilderness experience. I felt like I was in a cottage in the woods but so in a castle at the same time. The dinning room was beautiful. When i went it was foggy so it felt like a bob ross painting. Overall I really enjoyed it. The food was also good. I had the vegetarian pasta option. The stew was a bit too smoky for me. Definitely a great date spot. Parking lot was good. Easy to find parking

Having been here a few times, I can say the experience is consistently really good, mostly because the food is phenomenal when cooked correctly. Service can be hit or miss, its been a recurring theme usually a few things are forgotten and the servers need a gentle reminder that things are missing. Also some tables get checked on more frequently/often than where I have sat. Inside it can be loud the tables are close and some groups are louder than others, so it can be challenging to hold a conversation at times. The food is good, just seem to have difficulty doing a medium-well steak.

Destination restaurant great for special occasions. Beautiful setting, attentive service and lovely ambiance makes the food taste even better. Love the special extras such as the amuse bouche, extra birthday dessett and parting sweets. Sourdough bread was fresh and delicious. Scallops were excellent and loved the flavor combinations. The mains (we had pork chop, short rib and butternut mushroom pasta) were flavorful and generous. The dessets (chocolate bombe, pistachio cake and cheese course) were lovely endings to a great meal.

Ask the Community - The Mountain House

On Google, there is a statement that says this restaurant is permanently closed. Is that true or not?

It reopened with a new Chef

Are the trees lit up at night?

Yes they are! The food and surroundings are great there! I hope you enjoy

Is it a kids friendly restaurant ? We have a six months old baby in the stroller and we don't know if we can bring the baby with us.

Yes, it is family friendly restaurant. I would recommend to let them know ahead of time, so they can give you appropriate table to accommodate.

Did this use to be Bella Vista Restaurant?

No, different location. It's on the opposite side of Skyline.

    Does this restaurant serve venison?

When we went there about 2 months ago, I had Venison Medallions with a Cherry Compote. Was pretty good.

I understand people may be ok with that, but not for me. They said they can cook it but will be 35 to 40 minutes and we said that is perfectly fine and understood. But 20 minutes in, the Chef came in gracefully to share that he can't cook it, and he will bring it now, and if we slice it and don't like it, he can then cook the slices. Me and my son thought that we should be able to eat it, even if it was a bit on the rare side, and we did. It wasn't the perfect situation for us, which is the 3 stars, but it wasn't bad. Moral of the story, if you like your tomahawk cooked in one piece, this is not the place for you. For me if it is slices, then it is no longer tomahawk but rather sliced steaks and that's not why I am here. Will we go there again? Most probably, but 100% not for tomahawk.

I decided to go on a Thursday evening and sit at the Bar and Lounge instead of the dining room since the dining room has a set menu. I arrived at 5:30pm to find out that there was a 2 hour wait!! I was shocked, nothing special - father's day or anything. It turns out that since Chase has 2 $150 credits for dining at their selected restaurants and the first credit expires on June 30 and I went on June 26, everyone else had the same idea. We did not wait 2 hours and the hostess mentioned that if I came before they opened at 5pm, around 4:50pm, they may be able to either get me seated or the wait list would be shorter. The restaurant itself is on El Camino, between business but the front is beautiful and covered in ivy. They do not have parking, the building that they are in is shared by K&L Wine merchants and the parking is only for them not Selbys but they do offer complimentary valet, which is fast and efficient. I was going to go back on June 30, a Tuesday, but decided not to fight traffic on a weekday and ended up going on a Sunday instead, I arrived at 4:45 and there were already about 30 people in line, people showed to wait in line starting at 4:20pm. It was a hot day and not a pleasant wait but they open the doors promptly. It took time for the host to speak to each guest and discuss their options, this could have been faster. By the time I got to the front of the line, the wait list was 4 people deep and I was #5 and the wait was still an hour and a half. I decided to wait, there are 2 chairs in the lobby and fortunately I was able to snag one but they really should have more seating. They have a roof top but for reasons I did not understand and the hostess could not articulate properly, certain people were seated at the rooftop and others were not. I had been told over the phone that both bar and rooftop were available for walk ins. The wait ended up being an hour and I was seated at the bar with another person who was also dining by themselves, I had to tell the servers several times that were not together. You are immediatley greeted and the server pours you water and another brings out a small plate of truffle popcorn - delicious. They have an extensive wine list and serve cocktails as well. I ordered a glass of champagne. I took one star off for the lack of seating and for the pours, they were less than generous. When dining in the bar, you can order from the bar menu or the dining room menu. I decided to order from the bar menu. I got the plate of mussels and the black truffle burger. The mussels are $29 for a pound and that itself can be sufficient for a meal, it comes with a thick slice of toast to soak up the juices. I ended up not eating the burger but taking it to go. The burger was $55 and is served with fries. Both dishes were outstanding but a little salty. I also got the Pinot Noir Rose and it was better than the champagne. Service was great if not a bit delayed because they were very busy. Would I go back, probably if I did not have to fight the crowds to get in.

The hostess did, and we were pleased to see more options on their summer menu since the first time we tried RH Rooftop Restaurant previously was in the winter. My mom ordered the Peach Bellini, I ordered the Pomme Royal (non-alcoholic). In my opinion this menu does have a little something for everyone, even if you're looking for something more casual or budget-friendly. They have a gorgeous selection of salads - super hydrated and happy vegetables, beautiful presentation, very refreshing - plus familiar favorites like burgers and sandwiches - all the way to your lobster and overpriced oysters. We ended up sharing the Steak Frites (medium rare), the Lobster Roll (added caviar), as well as the Blue Fin Toro Carpaccio. The steak frites really impressed me and I could see why people all around us were ordering french fries alone - they're top tier and you can tell they're fresh cut potatoes vs. frozen. Steak was perfectly seasoned and the lump crab on top was also fresh, vs. canned. I wish there was more. Lobster roll was divine, although on the smaller side, and next time we probably won't add the caviar. The caviar alone added an extra $40 to a $36 sandwich so... yeah. The carpaccio is mouthwateringly thin and served with a lighter dusting of caviar - we wanted to order another one and flagged our server down for a second order, but it never came. Like other reviewers have mentioned, service can be slow and disjointed. We were served by 3-4 different faces and although I didn't mind that, I could see how things were lost in translation. Our cloth napkins also smelled gross (when you leave them in the washer too long) which was a huge turn-off so we asked for paper napkins to wipe our mouths. Other than that, it's a real treat to watch the sunset from the outdoor patio if you're around in time with the fireplaces turned on.

Upstairs, the restaurant sits beneath a soaring glass-and-steel atrium, surrounded by olive trees and centered around a fountain. It looks like something between a greenhouse and a designer showroom. They also have an outside area for drinks and snacks. The restaurant was packed and too loud, though, and the tables were too close together. Considering how expansive the gallery is, I wonder why a little more of that space was not given to the restaurant. Another major downside is that they do not accept walk-ins, so you need a reservation. I would choose dinner over lunch. In daylight, the sun pouring through the glass can be too much, with little protection. At night, the lights, trees, and fountain create a much more enchanting and beautiful atmosphere.

I don't think this is a must get. I liked the flavors otherwise. The octopus was one of my favorites. I loved the sauce for it and the jalapeños were a nice touch! The pork chop was one of my favorites as well!! I love how it was experimented with peaches; I'd never think to try those together but it works. The short rib steak was amazing! It's suuuper tender and I'm still thinking about it. Though I probably wouldn't eat it with the green beans; it didn't seem to go well together but it did with the mushrooms. The service is great here; they even took a napkin that was hung on my chair and folded it neatly onto the table again. I wish the portion sizes were bigger here overall, when you share with four people you're only getting like a bite each and for the prices even though it's a fancier place I'd expect to get a litttleee more (i've seen other fancy places have bigger sizes)
