The food was amazing. The service was a different story. We had 7:30 pm reservations and didn't get seated until 8 pm. And once we got sat, our server didn't come to our table for a good 15 minutes. We never got her name. The only reason she came was because I got up and told the manager. The only employee that was attentive to our table was the busser/water guy with glasses. Our server never checked up on us, and she only came to our table to take our food and drink orders. We didn't end up leaving until 9:30 pm. While we were waiting for our check, other employees started stacking chairs and moving tables in the same dining room. We were going to talk to the manager after, but it looked like she left already.

Came here for the first time and it did not disappoint! First all, I love how remote the location is. Right in the woods over by Skyline so it makes the drive quite fun. Just look at the restaurant inside. It just surrounded by trees which makes it so warm and cozy. Such an intimate vibe that feels like you are in another world. We got the three course prix fixe which was delicious! Started off with the pan seared scallops and the Texas quail. The scallops were perfection honestly. It was very light and buttery at the same time. I honestly was close to ordering another one of them because it really hit the spot. The texas quail was very interesting, but the salad that came with this dish was the star. It paired really well with the quail. For entree, we got the grilled venison loin and their off menu special which was the 16oz New York Steak. The venison was amazing. It was medium rare and it was just so smooth when you cut into it. It mixed so well with that vanilla parsnip puree that was included. The New York steak was also just so good I could not stop eating it. The best thing was also the mushrooms that they actually forage here in the area. It was just another added bonus to the dish! For dessert, I got the panna cotta and their off menu dessert, the German chocolate cake. Just devine! The panna cotta was the best way to end the course. I left wanting more! And that chocolate cake, WOW. Just so rich and decadent. Service was amazing and each staff was so friendly and attentive. Tip: Parking can be difficult. You may be able to park in their small parking lot or may have to park across the street right on Skyline.

When in the world did this place exist! I never even heard of it until my friend had her wedding there and I'm so glad she did! What a hidden gem. The best wedding food ever! Then my friend told me the chefs are ex Michelin chefs! What?! No wonder. The lobster roll and scallop blew my mind. Better than any I've ever had. And you can tell they know how to cook when the sourdough is made to perfection with the crunchy fall apart exterior and the soft chewy inside. Not to mention it's out in the wilderness so it's such a peaceful way to enjoy life. I will say getting there was a pain! I did not anticipate such a crazy windy drive. But I would suffer again because the whole experience was magical!

This review is long overdue but I am still thinking about how incredible our experience was at mountain house. The restaurant is beautiful, the food was presented beautifully and tasted even better, and the service was phenomenal. We were celebrating our anniversary and our host and waiters went above and beyond in making us feel special. I especially appreciated that not only were there vegetarian options for each course, but the vegetarian options were actually delicious and unique! I find so often at nicer establishments like this one, the vegetarian alternatives are underwhelming, if they exist at all. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to celebrate or just enjoy a lovely meal!

The Mountain House is a restaurant that takes you back in time to a peaceful, tranquil setting in the forest among towering trees. It's a short 25 minute drive from Half Moon Bay to a place far different than the waves and sand below it. Set in the forest it makes its name with excellent service, a rustic environment, and food offerings of superior quality. We throughly enjoyed our cocktails, the bread with whipped butter that we absolutely loved, and a prefixed menu with options that we really found enjoyable. The quail - amazing as well as the heirloom tomato Burrata salad. The salmon, very nice and they kept the skin on at our request. The Venison, nicely done, great reduction sauce. The rib eye unfortunately was the only miss here as it didn't seem like a good cut or quality piece with far too much fat. The dessert was excellent, and we loved so many parts of this experience.

The view was amazing, I really liked the quail and how it went with the salad. It wasn't too heavy and not too light. I got medium rare (not a steak connoisseur but it was one of the top steaks I've had.) The portions were a good amount and I wasn't able to finish it all so I took some home. My boyfriend got the pistachio cake and I liked how it had a nice light nutty flavor.

Truly a magical wilderness experience. I felt like I was in a cottage in the woods but so in a castle at the same time. The dinning room was beautiful. When i went it was foggy so it felt like a bob ross painting. Overall I really enjoyed it. The food was also good. I had the vegetarian pasta option. The stew was a bit too smoky for me. Definitely a great date spot. Parking lot was good. Easy to find parking

Amazing food always hits right. cocktails mixed to perfection, staff friendlier than a Disney greeter and don't get me started on the views!!

Having been here a few times, I can say the experience is consistently really good, mostly because the food is phenomenal when cooked correctly. Service can be hit or miss, its been a recurring theme usually a few things are forgotten and the servers need a gentle reminder that things are missing. Also some tables get checked on more frequently/often than where I have sat. Inside it can be loud the tables are close and some groups are louder than others, so it can be challenging to hold a conversation at times. The food is good, just seem to have difficulty doing a medium-well steak.

Destination restaurant great for special occasions. Beautiful setting, attentive service and lovely ambiance makes the food taste even better. Love the special extras such as the amuse bouche, extra birthday dessett and parting sweets. Sourdough bread was fresh and delicious. Scallops were excellent and loved the flavor combinations. The mains (we had pork chop, short rib and butternut mushroom pasta) were flavorful and generous. The dessets (chocolate bombe, pistachio cake and cheese course) were lovely endings to a great meal.

On Google, there is a statement that says this restaurant is permanently closed. Is that true or not?

It reopened with a new Chef

Are the trees lit up at night?

Yes they are! The food and surroundings are great there! I hope you enjoy

Is it a kids friendly restaurant ? We have a six months old baby in the stroller and we don't know if we can bring the baby with us.

Yes, it is family friendly restaurant. I would recommend to let them know ahead of time, so they can give you appropriate table to accommodate.

Did this use to be Bella Vista Restaurant?

No, different location. It's on the opposite side of Skyline.

    Does this restaurant serve venison?

When we went there about 2 months ago, I had Venison Medallions with a Cherry Compote. Was pretty good.

The decor is of course top-tier as it's housed in an RH. Per the waitress' recommendation, we ordered the Crispy Artichokes and my partner got the Whole Grilled Branzino. I ordered the Sea Bass and a Pomme Royal non-alcoholic drink. The Crispy Artichokes were SO good. I'd come back for those alone. The Branzino was good, and the Pomme Royal tasted like an apple pie. While the Sea Bass was good, I found it too buttery. Is that possible? The potato puree that came with it was really good though. A salmon dish came out initially, but after telling them I'd ordered the sea bass, it was remedied at no cost to me. Definitely a family style dinner, order multiple things to try! Made a reservation couple weeks in advance for a week night dinner for 2. Celebrated our anniversary and couldn't be more happy we came to Ethel's Fancy. Service was great, everyone was friendly and explained the menu and process. Helped making some personal recommendations and the food came out quickly. The only dish that came out very slowly was the dessert, we did wait about 25 - 30 minutes just for the softserve, but all other dishes came out in a moderate time. Rouge de Bordeaux Milk Bread, comes with cultured amazake butter and some salt. Comes out super warm, puffy, and soft. Very nice pull and the butter is super decadent. Very great take on a japanese shokupan, we were hesitant at first, but it makes for a good appetizer 5:5 Warm Sesame Pancakes were like those mini sesame mochi pancakes at chinese dim sum, but the texture was slightly airy. The sauce to accompany it was unlike anything i've had, smoked trout, avocado and yuzu. The avocado was not over powering and the cream on top was whipped. Amazing pairing. 5/5 Sashimi of Kanpachi, japanese cucumber salad as the base and dressing with the kanpachi sashimi. I will say this was the weakest dish of the night. While still good, it was a bit too tart, it overpowered the other natural flavors. Fish was still very good, tender and not fishy, but again, over powered but all the tartness in the dish. 3/5 Yellowfin Tuna on sushi rice - this was a great shareable plate of upscale poke. The tuna was great, no fishy taste, perfectly seasoned and the smoked kira had an amazing pop of flavor. Very rich and decadent dish, absolutely loved the harmony of a slight smokey flavor to the nice rich, umami savoriness. 5/5 Crispy Caledonian Prawns - Absolute star of the night. We could not stop talking about these prawns. Big plump prawns, fried perfectly, where the prawn itself was not dry but the shell had a shatteringly crispy exterior definitely slightly coated with a starch to give it a nice crunch. The chili ramp sunomono was a great touch, not spicy at all but added a great touch of flavor that complimented the crispy prawns. Could devour plates of these! 6/5! Sword-Fish Katsu Style - A great take with sword fish, flakey but not overcooked, great thin crispy katsu. Accompanied by kumquat and cauliflower, helps cut down the greasiness. The sauce with it was a buttery tart sauce. This was a lot better where the tartness helped the fried fish. It was like eating a fried fish burger without the buns. I really enjoyed this one. 5/5 Lastly we ordered a softserve with peaches, shokupan croutons and a caramel dressing. We had to wait about 25 minutes just for the small softserve so we were a bit surprised as other dishes came out relatively quickly or in an orderly fashion. It still tasted great as a little small dessert but definitely was surprised by how long it took. 3/5 Overall, we were very happy with our experience at Ethel's and it definitely lives up to the standard it sets. I can't wait for other new dishes to try and come back in the future.

When we arrived, we debated on where to be sat to be able to view the World Cup final. We were just a party of 4 but the bar tables were for parties of 2. We were prepared to split into two separate tables. The manager took it upon himself to offer a larger table that had a perfect view of a TV. It was so nice of him! We did order split plates (an extra charge) but the kitchen did serve them on split plates, which was nice. The burgers were super juicy and delicious. The fries were served hot and crispy. We did other appetizers of candied bacon which was disappointing. It just tasted like regular bacon. Not especially thick or sweet. That was the only disappointment of the visit. We also ordered the wings which were super delicious! We really enjoyed them. Our server Tanya was so friendly and accommodating. She was amazing. Overall a great experience.

We are so happy we did - the experience was wonderful, and the staff made the evening truly special. From the welcoming hostess, to the bartender, and finally our server, Justin, everyone made us feel appreciated and taken care of. Justin was friendly, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable. We were surprised when he shared that he had only been working there for less than a month because he carried himself with the confidence, professionalism, and warmth of someone who had been there much longer. The food was fantastic, but the service is what truly made our anniversary celebration memorable. Justin went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect, and his genuine enthusiasm really stood out. We also felt especially welcomed when the manager, Sohiel, stopped by our table to greet us and spent some time chatting. He shared how proud he is to be part of the team, and his warmth, passion, and genuine energy were truly appreciated. We had such a wonderful evening and will definitely be returning to the Palo Alto location. Thank you

Nice ambiance and good sides but terrible value for money…read more Came here for a birthday dinner with a large party. I ordered the $85 prime dry aged ribeye. The server brought out what was obviously a New York strip but try to convince me it was what I ordered. He took it back to the kitchen and said the chef confirmed it. Aside from the obvious visual difference, I cut into it and it was clearly a New York. I asked a different server and he immediately confirmed it was a New York and took it back. (I'm not a fussy eater and I would've been fine eating the New York. But I'm not fine with being gaslit and overpaying for something I didn't order) Once I got the ribeye, everyone else was near done with their meals. The ribeye was underwhelming and over seasoned with way too much salt. I ordered medium rare and it was closer to medium well. Based on other dry aged cuts I've had, it did not taste or have the texture of a dry aged steak. Given the earlier New York experience, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't. On a separate note, my wife ordered a cocktail that took over half an hour to come out near the end of our meal. She had actually forgotten about it. Aside from those issues, the service was great. Everyone was friendly, attentive and accommodating. The sides and apps were also very good and probably the best part of the meal. We had brussel sprouts, loaded potato, corn, bread with lavender butter, onion rings, cheesy potatoes, and burrata.
