Holy jeebus what a huge menu full of huge portioned items. My jetlagged self was a little overwhelmed with options at this first stop on my recent Vancouver adventure, but also oh-so grateful for a hearty veggie-ful meal post-flight. After much deliberation my partner and I settled on a buddha's feast for him and a Thai gado salad for me, plus a plate of sesame potato wedges with miso gravy. I was very satisfied with my huge plate of shredded raw beets, carrots, bean sprouts, pile of tofu, peanut sauce and a hard boiled egg. Might sound like a weird combo but it was very tasty and satisfying. Plus some starchy potato fries on the side really rounded things out. My partner was into his meal but had a little orderers regret when he saw my meal, and the next door table's enchiladas. The feast was good I think but also maybe not the "must order" on the menu. The whole Mexican portion of the menu seems pretty no-lose. The staff here were attentive and very relaxed, and the patio was quiet and calm - all good stuff. Decided to go try their breakfast menu and honestly it was just okay. It is more exciting and better tasting than their regular menu though. The vegan NAAM platter comes with two buckwheat pancakes, tofu scramble, potatoes and your choice of veggie sausage or seven star strips. The vegan croissantwich is an open-faced croissant with tofu scramble, vegan sausage and vegan cheese on top alongside some potatoes. The server was nice but the ambience isn't my favourite. I definitely preferred the croissantwich. The croissant was good, though you can't really tell that it's a croissant. The vegan sausage and seven star patty were both pretty good as well. The potatoes were just boiled potatoes and could use some seasoning, but they were fine after being dipped into the miso gravy. The tofu scramble was unfortunately a disappointment. It was very dry and the flavour was average. The pancakes also had banana in them (I hate bananas) and fell apart easily. What can I say - my Food Pervert has put our experience at the Naam in perfect sentence structure. Having read and hearing that it is overrated, and the service stinks... it is hard not to have a worry in your mind, especially when you're celebrating the birthday of a food expert. Surely enough, it took a while before the waiter actually came to take our order, but good company really makes time go by quicker. The orange strawberry juice was so fresh, and the food we ordered was just what I had imaged. Portions were large, and I felt like a big seeing how we finished everything on our table and everyone else seemed to have leftovers. I completely understand why everyone raves about the miso gravy - it's so odd but good at the same time, you know what i mean? You can identify it so clearly, but it is so surprising that miso can also be gravy.... or the joys of new cooking inventions. The chocolate carrot cake was moist, but dense, but sweet, and chocolately, yet still tasting carroty at the same time - so YUM. Surprisingly, our server ended up being super nice and really cool. We were his last table during his shift, and I can completely see someone wanting to get out asap and giving you bad service because they've had a long day at work, but he was attentive, friendly, and offered good suggestions. My first visit to the Naam one sunny, late- fall afternoon, was free from the infamous line-ups that plague this place most other times of the day and in particular, on the weekend. Instead, I was treated to a four place table to myself, enough room to keep the daily paper open to both pages while I ordered split pea soup with salad and Naam bread. The soup was wonderful, thick and tasty and perfect soaked up with the Naam seed bread. The salad was massive and was graced with sprouts, carrot and beet shavings and various types of lettuce with the popular Naam dressing of vinegar, green onion, parsley and sesame tahini. A perfect veggie lunch for under 10 bucks and I even took part of it home with me! When I mentioned this was my first visit, my server was eager and willing to give me suggestions and upon my indecision to choose a soup flavour, she brought me two spoons with each soup so I could take a try, very appreciated! The menu is varied and all vegetarian with vegan options always available. Mexican dishes pop up here and there as they are the perfect vegetarian foods, and the fries with miso gravy are famous, that's on my agenda the next time around, as is a seat on the patio should a sunny day show its face again! The Naam also features live music in the evenings from the talented locals of the area. I've realized it's a big mistake to get any of their Enchiladas. They are not enchiladas, they are just crap stuffed inside a tortilla and topped with cheese. The best thing I've had here is the The Naam bowl. I don't know if it says much, but the fresh veggies, sauce and brown rice taste good and it's nice to get when you don't want to do dishes. I recently got the Enchilada with chili in it after hating the (avocado cashew one) and it was like eating chili in a tortilla with cheese on top. It's just odd and not executed well and the chili is just beans, there's no veggies in it at all and it gets really much just eating beans by themselves. I like vegetables with my beans. I really like the potato wedges. The miso gravy is tasty, but don't kid yourself it's not healthy. Oil is the second ingredient in it. So this is disappointing. The salad dressing I never really like but I eat the salad anyways as it's nice to have. I think they could come up with a much better dressing. What a unique place! My visit to the Naam began with a long wait (well worth it for the food.) We went on a Wednesday night and waited about 40 minutes for a table for four. I don't know if they take reservations but if I could turn back time I would have tried to make them. Once we finally got into Naam there was loud music (not the musical taste of my table) and we were luckily seated at the outdoor patio where it was less distracting. The service was on the slower side. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgable though, which almost made up for that. I was there as a part of an eclectic group - one vegetarian, two foodies, and one staunch carnivore who waned nothing to do with the restaurant. Given that mix, I'd say the menu was great at giving us all what we were looking for (or keeping us from being totally unhappy, in the case of the carnivore.) We started with the guac and chips and an order of the seasame honey tofu. Both were good, but the guac has a poor guac to chip ratio. They needed to double the guac. I had the pad Thai and would recommend it. It's a huge portion and I only finished half. That was what our carnivorous friend SHOULD have eaten. Everyone else at the table had different burger platters. The fries were good, and all of the burgers seemed good to me. The brown rice patty (California burger) was the least exciting and tasty option. Nobody ate their side salads because there was so much food, but the Naam dressing was tasted and approved of. Despite the fact that I've seen and heard about this restaurant for years, I haven't been as many times as my friends. I've only been three times in a few years, but each time it has been memorable. With my last visit, I got the Thai Dragon Bowl along with the avocado enchiladas. I was kind of thrown off by how delicious and tasty the meal was. I don't know why, but I just didn't think it would be that good - a great positive is that the portion sizes are definitely large and sufficient for an adult. It was kind of busy every time, but somehow I never noticed a long wait time. My service was what you'd expect from a restaurant of this calibre, so it was good. Our experience at The Naam was a good one! Hubs and I were having the munchies last night at 10. We decided that we would have a night of fun out, a something that we hadn't done in a long time. The interior of the restaurant was very retro, but this makes sense as the place is very, very old. When we got there, there was a lineup but no worries, we had all night! Hubs and I chatted when we waited and finally they gave us a little table for two near the entrance. Didn't take as long as I thought, but maybe we should come later next time to avoid the lines. Hubs got the gold dragon bowl on my recommendation and I got the Thai variation. When the bowls came, they were filled to the brim with fresh vegetables. Delicious! The sauce in my Thai bowl was tasty as well; it went with the rice and toppings perfectly and I was literally shoving food in my mouth because I was starving haha. Had a taste of hub's bowl and I didn't like it as much. I thought the miso gravy was too vinegary and the "Naam fries" were soggy and reminded me more of roast potatoes. I preferred mine but he really enjoyed it. Ah, to each his own I suppose. The portions were really big though. We didn't even need desert. As for the service... What can I say. We had to wait and it was IMPOSSIBLE to flag someone down because they were too busy. In fact, our waiter said that he had 12 tables to deal with. Like what?! If you have that kind of business please hire more people! I didn't really like his tone but I figured, meh. He's being worked like a dog so it was forgivable. -1 for the service. Sure the service is slow, sure the wait is long, sure your meal occasionally comes to you luke-warm. But let us be honest with ourselves, there is a reason why The Naam is one of the most popular restaurants on the West Side. I suspect the reputation of this place hinges on two important features 1) it is open all night, every night (not Christmas but I went here at 4am on New Years once and service was pretty darn quick!) and 2) While the front-of-house staff are run of the mill Kits hipsters, the kitchen is chocker-block full of amazing little Indian women who work miracles with a bowl of mushroom broth. I am not kidding... the Naam broth is what brings me back time and time again. Also, nothing puts the kozy back in Sarkozy like a plate of vegan quesadillas and a piping hot (if you are lucky) dragon bowl. Finally, I really appreciate that this place makes every attempt to blend into its surrounds. Specifically, the Naam supports a lot of local artists and musicians and is a true staple in the community. Thus, while I often grumble over the wait to get in, the wait to place an order, the wait to get served, and the wait to pay... the Naam holds a special place in my heart and is one of the first places I take out of town visitors and in-town friends for a yummy meal and great people watching! read more

The soup definitely needed salt, but I never fault a restaurant for that kind of seasoning as they leave you a nice salt-shaker on the table for you to doctor to your own taste. Blah! I would not go back to the Naam... every time we drive by, the place looks packed with a line up out the door, so I thought it must be good, right? Well, the food is mediocre at best. I had an Asian curry that looked great, lots of colourful veggies etc, but it was practially tasteless. For a curry I expect FLAVOUR. This was not flavourful. Long on vegetables and short on flavour. It was also obviously put into the bowl in a slap dash manner. It could have been done with a little more care and the rim wiped off. My friend had the Dragon Bowl. This dish consisted of Naam fries, cheese, miso gravy, steamed veggies, sprouts, carrots, and deep fried tofu. Overall, she thought it was pretty good with nice flavour coming from the miso gravy. I thought it was OK, but again pretty bland. I'm not sure that I would go back to the Naam again. I like that it is open 24 hours, but the recipes fell flat for me. Once you've eaten here once that's probably all you will ever need to since it all starts to taste the same. Everything is hearty and sticks to your ribs vegetarian. So it was my first time to a vegetarian restaurant, and admittedly I went very reluctantly. You see, to pay for a meal (especially at a place where parking for free is difficult) without meat, is against my principles. (This was fun, as I very much enjoy surprises.) So the dish he chose for me: the cashew and avacado enchilada platter (picture posted). Naam salad: The salad was phenomenal. Very refreshing, very light, yet flavorful. But was I impressed? Well, I equate it to going to a steak house and finding the steak phenomenal. It should simply be the case. Sesame fries with miso gravy: high marks. Very good combination. Now the main. I would hardly call it an enchilada. Now I'm no expert on Mexican food, but it was more of an avocado dip casserole with a toritilla on top. It was sort of like warm baby food topped with tortilla and cheese (and I seriously don't mean this in a negative way). A friend and I split an order of nachos, which I began to use as a base for my enchilada. So basically I began to eat my main, as a dip. Overall, I am quite, quite full. It seems the money used for meat goes into portion size, which equals, pretty massive portions. The fries you get are probably about an entire potato and a half's worth. Unfortunately, I would have to say, the waiter was not successful in convincing me to turn vegan (or whatever specific kind of vegetarian class this restaurant fits under. I really don't care to study all the differences.) The platter with tax turned out to be about 20 dollars. So you ask me, "Would you pay $20 for a meal with no meat again?" No. I would not. All that aside, the atmosphere is cozy, the service is slow but friendly, and a ton of people seem to like it. The waiter suggested I come again and try the dragon bowl. Ordered a pita pizza, a Maui-Maui Burger, which is a Seven-Star burger served with mushrooms, pineapple, water chestnuts & teriyaki sauce and the seven star burger. Maui Maui was just broke apart in your hand. The pineapples were chunks so when you bit into it, half the burger fell out of the bun. The seven star burger was just bland. EDIT: Friend got food poison here last week! This place is said to be convenient because it is near campus and open 24h which is a plus when you are wanting some veggies late at night. But I can also see why it needs to be open 24h because it usually takes 1h+ for food to arrive. This seems to be a common experience a lot of people are having with this place from unhelpful staff to a very slow kitchen. Last time we tried to order food via phone at around 9pm and they said they wouldn't even accept phone orders at all because they had no one to take the order (keep in mind someone picked up the phone to tell me that no one could write the order down for the kitchen...). The main point being service was very prompt this outing..seems like they definitely hired more servers and have alot of new staff on. Second complaint in previous review from a year ago was the bread and potatoes from my naam burger were burnt/overcooked. This time around they were cooked/toasted less...great! Also, what else is different from a year ago is that they have a happy hour menu now...good prices on sleeves of beer. Not only is The Naam a vegetarian and vegan restaurant, but it's also a retro, lively, and picturesque locale. We went here for dinner after performing a concert and we were planning to bring our vegan friend with us, but they weren't able to go. So we stuck to our plans and came here. We were able to be seated quickly (there were only 3 of us) despite the place being quite busy. It's a small place with small tables, but the dishes that we ordered fit quite nicely. I ordered the Naam Steak Platter, and my friends got Thai noodles and Crying Tiger Thai Stir Fry. We were able to sort of talk, but the music was pretty loud. It took exactly 34 minutes for the food to arrive, but the wait was worth it. My steak platter was tender, meaty (it's not meat though), and the miso sauce paired really nicely with both the "steak" and the veggies. The Thai noodles were slightly spicy, but it was exactly like Pad Thai and it was delicious as well. The Stir Fry was also spicy and delicious--it reminds me of red curry if anything. My experience was unpleasant because of the poor service and mediocre food. We got the famous potatoes with gravy and although the gravy tasted great, potatoes were dry and cold. I got the Thai bowl which was extremely salty to the point that I only ate half of it. Also very little dressing for the size of the bowl. My boyfriend got a curry which was average in taste and a burger which tasted terrible. The only hit were the tacos: big, filling, flavourful and unique. Service was slow, ignorant and quite frustrating. We waited for our food for over an hour with no one giving us any updates, filling our water glasses or asking if we need anything. They were all sitting at the dessert area talking and socializing. Will not go back anytime soon. read more

Fabulous and exciting vegetarian good. Great service and interesting drinks. Three of us had a burrito, a Buddha feast and a type of pad Thai. Fresh and crispy all our meals were huge. A place to gladden every vegetarian's heart at value for money prices. read more

A little apprehensive as this is my first time at an all vegetarian restaurant. I'm relieved to see soy burgers and fries on the menu, but ordered the gold dragon bowl and a berry lassi. Everyone looks lean and healthy, so that's inspiring. I'm clearly a tourist here. Comfortable vibe, at 5:30pm on a Wednesday I was seated immediately. 20 minutes later there is a line up out the door. I like the miso gravy, it is more substantial than miso soup. Been here lots of times and it was great. Just been here today and had a horrible experience. Was about ordering the Teriyaki stir fry and wanted to ask if I can get fries instead of rice or noodles. The waitress asked me, if I wanted the brown rice, and I said that I actual don't really like rice and certainly don't want noodles. I wanted to ask to substitute it with fries but she just said rice is good with it and turned around and left.So I got the Teriyaki stir fry and ate like half of it and wanted to take the rest home, but after I ate the half of it, the rest was all too soggy and literally swimming in the teriyaki sauce and was overpowering the taste of the veggies. When the waitress came and asked me if I wanted to take it home, I told here that it was too soggy etc and she asked me if I wanted more rice with it. And I replied that I actually don't like rice for the second time. Then I asked to order fries and some salad for take out.When she came back with the machine and food to pay I also had to do all the transactions by myself. She just punched in the prize and I had to do everything myself. I noticed it, because the machine said at one point, now give to customer. awful service read more

Home to the original veggie burger. The Naam has been doing it way before anybody as Vancouver's oldest natural foods restaurant, open since 1968. In fact it was here that I had my very first restaurant veggie burger in 1994 and I thought I was accidentally served a meat patty! The Naam is still serving solid healthy-hippy vegetarian fare to this day. Open 24 hours too. The bottled Naam Miso Gravy is delicious and I always have one on hand - my favourite sauce on everything from Buddha Bowl to burger. read more

24 hour vegan and vegetarian food? Sign me up. The portions at the Naam are huge and the menu has plenty of options. Be prepared for a bit of a wait for a table, even if you're going fairly late at night. The highlight on the menu for me is always the sesame fries with miso gravy. I've never tasted anything like it! I would also highly recommend the Cali Burger. The platters come with the sesame fries and a side salad as well. This place has great food, good service, and a really cool vibe. Definitely a must-try if you are in the Vancouver area. read more
