Wow, some reviews are really harsh! I don't think, in my limited experience, some of the reviews are warranted. I've gone a couple times now (just moved to the neighborhood) and feel compelled to provide my qualifications prior to continuing with my review. 1. I'm not a "fifty-something" - I'm in my early 30's. Who cares what the median age of the place is (unless you're trying to score and in that case, this probably helps you out. You're welcome.) 2. I wouldn't qualify myself as "working class", but so what if I was?? 3. I'm certainly not a "loud drunk" - wait, I'm going to amend that, I certainly AM a "loud drunk" but not at 2:00 PM. More like 12:00 AM. Given those three points, I think I can provide a realistic and balanced opinion of Next Page Cafe. It is certainly a "working class pub in a working class town" as someone else put it. No one has ever been rude or mean to me. Perhaps that's because I don't walk in and act disgusted or thumb my nose at the other patrons of the bar? Just a thought. Part of the major appeal for the place is the love for music. They get some great bands (I saw "The Dons" this past Saturday night...and me and my other "thirty-something friends" loved the band, loved the people-watching and loved how much fun everyone at the bar was having). Yeah, it gets loud - but it's a bar! When I first came here, I was astounded at the cleanliness. The floors aren't sticky - but if you are popping by after the second shift has started on a Saturday night...I'm pretty sure that the floors start to get messy. I spill on the regular...when I'm sober. So after a couple drinks, yeah...things get "sticky" but if you come here on an "off" night - the staff keeps the place pretty damn clean. Even the ladies room was cleaner than I had expected. I wouldn't say to come here for the food. It's actually not bad (the bar pizzas are really good), but you will be served on paper plates with plastic utensils. There are plenty of bars that just have a rack of chips covered in a layer of dust that grace the wall of their establishment. This is not one of those places. They serve decent food, the bartenders are friendly and quick to provide service and will often stop to chat for a few seconds before moving on to the next customer, and it's a fun place to listen to great live music. I feel like some folks, thought their opinions are completely valid, might need to get off their high horses and have some fun! Other notes: CASH ONLY. read more

I pretty much second Mindy L.'s review of The Next Page Cafe. Perhaps it's because my husband and I are among those "thirty-somethings" she mentioned in her review. I will preface this review by saying that I love live music (quality live music, that is) and I was very impressed by the group we saw here. The people watching was fantastic, of course, and I was amazed by the large group of people getting down on the dance floor. As she mentioned, the pizza is good... no frills good but I have no problem eating off a paper plate. It's nice and crispy with just the right amount of cheese and really hits the spot after a few brews. Speaking of the brews, again, no frills here. As self-professed beer geeks there was nothing here we were too excited about but I was happy grabbing a seasonal Sam Adams brew (Rebel IPA on this trip) and then for purposes of nostalgia (read: college), enjoying a Miller Lite. Bottom line, it was a good time and I was impressed by the cleanliness of the place and the friendliness of the staff. We will certainly be back soon! read more

Probably the best bar pizza anywhere. Great local bar that has some of the best local blues talent on Thurs night "open mike" hosted by Bob "satch" Romano. Friday and Saturdays there is always feature Bands. Blues mostly and some rock. The place has a good vibe. Most night the dance floor is full. Drinks are reasonable. Also a good pub menu. Never a cover for music. Well worth stopping in ,Guarantee you'll come back again! read more

Went there today with my family, 1:30PM or so. Nobody was there besides the staff. Sat down and ordered 2 pizza's. The pizza's took a little while, but the bartender (girl, maybe late 20's) treated my kids fine, indulging them with basic chit chat. The pizza was excellent, small bar pizza that filled all of us. $13.85 for the pizza's and small conversations go a long way. read more

I have been a "regular" Thursday night participant in the blues jam at this place for 7 years. There is no better jam anywhere in greater Boston. The regular crowd is friendly, well-behaved and diverse. Lawyers, stock brokers and money managers, construction supervisors, car salesmen, laborers, all having a good time. Most of the other reviews are spot on. Good place to go when you're already buzzed so you'll fit in and feel comfortable. I think most the people in here get off work around 2pm and start early. Cheap pizza on Tues and its very good bar pizza. A watered down version of Southie or Charlestown bar clientele. All good guys/gals just there to hoist a few. Sunday night,stopped in to watch the second half of pats game, 9 people at bar I sit chill, and wow. Talk about a crowd of drunks. I had to tape it. Unreal. After a few trying to get a beer was like pulling teeth bartender was too busy sitting on the cooler talking, I heard the drunks calling her name so I yelled for her by name she made her way over but wow. Service? If you want it on a Sunday night not happening here, ya put the juke box on while pats are on. Never again here. Then I get the bill and someone's else's glass of wine is on my tab. Not a fan. Went there after recently moving to town, we wanted to try every place in the area...ugh. Walked in on the Saturday night. There was a live band playing and the place is so small you can't have a conversation with anyone its so loud.. Feet stuck to the floor, entire place was filled with smoke from the kitchen, had to wait 10 minutes to get a drink and it wasn't even busy. We were also the only ones under 40. I don't usually write reviews, but myself and friends were treated so badly at The Next Page last Friday night. We went there about 7:00 on a Friday, I had a friend from out of town visiting, I thought I'd bring her here for a fun night out. There were 5 of us, and we had already spent over $30.00 in drinks, and tipped generously. Then some lady came up to us about 8:00 saying "you have to pay a $5.00 cover if you want to stay. I told her there was no sign posted and no one at the door. She said "well, I was late getting here, if you had gotten here at noon, you wouldn't have to pay." Whaaat? I've been to this establishment for many years, and there has never been a cover. I had $25.00 to pay for my friends, but it was the point. I said I wasn't going to leave because I had a beer in my hand. So she said "next time you will know there is a cover" and she left. About 15 minutes later the owner came over and started harassing my friend. He said "I'm the owner, and you have to pay" I asked if he was making us leave now that we all had drinks in our hands." Eddie Page, said "well don't ever come back here again" Whaaat? I've supported this establishment and the great bands there for years. I have money, and would gladly have paid at the door, but not when I've been there with my friends for over an hour. I never heard of anything like this in my life, he was rude and so was his wife (the woman that was collecting the money) They also picked and chose who to ask for money. It's not our fault, the woman showed up late, they didn't post the cover anywhere, then to be told never to come back! I don't plan to, and will spread the word about how rude they were to me and my friends. It's a great spot to listen to music, too bad the staff is so bad at communication, and treats the regular customers like this. Mr Page, you just lost 5 paying customers, and I'm sure you'll lose more. Also the place was empty, I guess he's thrown out more ppl than is just us 5. He owes us an apology. The drinks are already overpriced as it is, and I always tipped generously, and would have gladly paid. It was the point, they handled it all wrong, you don't talk to people like dirt who have been coming here for years, and have always gone just for fun, and never caused any trouble. I went to the Next Page Café and I ordered beer and went to pay for it with my debit card I was told that there was a $10 min charge because I was using a card. That's just outrageous and wrong but I just decided to just keep my mouth shut and enjoy the beer and the music. Once I finished my beer I decided to order another and asked to close my tab, the bar tender gave me the check and when I checked it I noticed the 1st beer was $4.75 and the 2nd (Same Beer) was $5:75 I asked the bar tender why is the 2nd beer a $1 more. She told me "Once The Bands Start There Is $1 extra charge...... Well that's not right and don't you think you should have this "Min Charge" and "price increase" policy posted at the bar.. I never write a review unless the place is really bad on the first visit or I have been there more than once. I wen to the next page twice The first time I went I ordered a mixed drink. The drink came out and it was half the size of a regular mix drink I order anywhere else and the price was the same as everywhere else I go. Someone over heard my friend and I talking about it, said something to the owner. The owner then came over to us. He told us his place has the best bands around the south shore and his place is the only place that does not charge a cover. He said instead of charging a cover he raises the drink prices by a 1.00 when the band starts. The band playing that night was horrible. I have seen much better bands at bars the other side of town. I also don't know any bars around the south shore that has a cover charge. He spent quite a bit of time trying to convince us how wonderful his place his, the great bands and the drink prices are really better than other places. While we were there we ordered 2 pizzas. The pizzas were great. One of the best bar pizzas I have had. Eddie the owner told us Tuesday nights is pizza night. A couple weeks later my friend and I went back for pizza night. The pizza was amazing but the drink price was the same price it was the first time we went and there was no band playing. The owner was not there but we said something to the bartender. She said as far as she knows drink prices are not raised a 1.00 when a band plays and the price she charged me for my drink is the regular price with or without a band. A GREAT Blues jam on Thursday nights, now run by a really good musician and total pro, Willie J Laws (check him out on youtube). It isn't a fancy place, but I honestly think their little personal size pizza is some of the best tasting pizza around. You get some of the best music around, and on Thursdays - FREE pizza is put out at around 9pm. The crowd is local and they sure do like to have a good time, but always friendly and never scary. read more
