Went here with my brother and his friend that just recently moved here. His friend's father is visiting from the Mainland. It was delicious and filling to me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]All of us enjoyed our share of beer and the atmosphere was electric.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Sunday, my brother thought it was closed but his buddy said it's open but not the kitchen. To our surprise, the customers there would bring in pupus for everyone to share, sort of like a pot luck. It was a wide variety of snacks, pork hash, manapua, baked salmon and several other foods, which I can't remember at the moment. Since it was all free, I'd like to thank everyone who brought in all the free food. Next time on Sunday, we'll remember to bring in our share! Walked in just after 1p. There was two people at one end of the bar and another several chairs down. The guy sitting alone turned out to be the bartender. I asked what was on tap an he replied they didn't have anything on tap and gestured to the back of the bar. I looked and there's the selection of beers. Which was kind of impressive. I ordered my beer and asked if the kitchen was open. Bartender responded yes and left it at that. Didn't ask of I wanted a menu or even if I knew what I wanted to order. I go to Nighthawk all the time and often describe it as the perfect blend between a neighborhood bar and a classic dive bar. The service is consistently great, the staff is always welcoming, and I love that the menu is simple without being boring -- everything that comes out of the kitchen is solid. I don't write many Yelp reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience after seeing a recent negative one that really didn't reflect what this place is like. When I walked in earlier today, several regulars were talking about a brief interaction with a group of three women who came in, sat at a table, and then asked the bartender -- Mia -- a quick question about whether to order at the bar or at the table. Mia, who is always cheerful and friendly, told them they could do either. Despite that, the group left almost immediately and later posted a one-star review claiming they received attitude. I wasn't involved, but I know the regulars who were there, and everyone agreed Mia was her usual kind and helpful self. She had even started pouring water for them when they sat down. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's worth noting that Nighthawk is a neighborhood bar. The hamburger steak plate was interesting ... a mound of rice, a hamburger patty, grilled onions and gravy ... So far, normal. Now, add a cut up hotdog and a container of pickles. Hmmm, what have we here? If I had ordered this, I would have asked for French fries in place of the rice. I was craving some tacos this evening and encore saloon was the first place that came to mind but sadly another (Italian/Asian fusion) restaurant/bar took over the space. So we went to nighthawk instead. It's nice to see that they're open until midnight this evening on a weekday. I do enjoy the ambiance-- it may get loud due to the surround sound system but i personally like it and i enjoy singing out loud to the music even though no one could hear me lol. Owner was cool, working the bar as usual. Although, i only came here for one crave which were tacos. I enjoyed the carne asada and carnitas tacos! Kind of wish they were bigger ':D for $3-4 each. The wait time just to order our food was unnecessarily longer than expected. I understand that uncle is working the bar but what happened to "I'll be right back?" Or where are the rest of your staff to help outside of the kitchen? If it's just him, then kudos but there's an opportunity to improve on time management. Waited about 15-20 minutes just to get him to come to the table and memorize what we verbally ordered. As we waited for another 15-20 minutes for the food to come out (it was only 4 small tacos and 1 burrito...), thankfully there was some tv entertainment that distracted us in the meantime. Despite all of the others times that I've visited nighthawk, I've never experienced this kind of service until today. I did not feel as valued as the customers who sat at the high top bar. He catered to them more than the customers who simply just wanted to order food. Even though i did not feel like ordering a drink tonight, I'm a customer too. I'm just here for the food. The tacos were overall simply good. I wish their spicy sauce was a little more spicier but that's ok. The tacos are the average price that you can pay anywhere else for tacos but there's no special wow factor to these ones. The drinks are strong and super reasonably priced. The bar is full of all types of booze, so there are plenty of options. We've never ordered anything fancy, but I have had the Marg and it was good. But I usually stick with tequila and soda with a lime and its never steered me wrong. Well, not all the time, haha. The food is surprisingly good. Many of the items are typical bar food items, but the Italian Beef sub is awesome. The meat has a good amount of salt and seasoning, the bread simply is there to hold the meat and there is beefy dip and fries. It all works well. The chicken wings with the Thai spicy sauce is so good. There are six pieces, but again, its not super expensive. The food quality is good and can rival many restaurants in the area. Lastly, the staff. Eddie is the owner operator. And he is a GENT. He always introduces himself, and is genuinely happy that you have walked into his establishment. Its not like many places where one is asked what they want, and there is no real connection. Eddie and his staff are always kind and respectful. Five star service from a friendly team. Felt like we were walking into cheers because the bartender knew my husband from a previous visit at least a month prior. We did not eat any food as we were waiting for a dinner reservation elsewhere but we did see some super fast service take place and good communication between the staff. The theme here is reminiscent of the night hawk painting as the block is very dark and lonely but the atmosphere is not. It felt like a chill place to have a drink and converse with new folks. I actually really like this place and if I lived closer, I'd probably frequent here more often. When we are already downtown, we tend to wander to this place for good food and drinks! Go right in and grab yourself a seat at the bar or any table. Order your drinks and food at the bar and if you have any questions, he'll be happy to answer them! If you haven't tried their Chicago dog, please do so! It's so good! It's my go to whenever I'm there. For drinks, they have a great selection of beers. Beers you don't normally see anywhere else. It's awesome! Food comes out right away and they bring it to your table. Very fun atmosphere with tvs at the bar if you need to watch a game or two.
