Wow! We were quite impressed with Plate. The food, the service - we can't wait for our next annual trip to VT to eat here again. We started with cocktails and zucchini fritters. The zucchini fritters tasted so close to my grandmother's that right there and then, they had my heart (and my stomach). We had to wait a while for our main courses and the restaurant started to clear out. We were getting worried about time as we wanted dessert too but didn't want to be those people keeping staff there. The waitress came over and apologized about the wait and said they'd be taking care of our entrees! That's the way you do it. Plate is hands down one of my favorite restaurants in the country. Any person I've heard is coming through Stowe I've said GO HERE and they do and then they thank me later. This place is a gem. We came once like 10 years ago and did their tasting menu which blew us away but this time we just opted for dinner and it still didn't disappoint. They really have a creative way to prepare and present food while using local ingredients and seasons ingredients. The vegan crab cakes stole the show for me. So much so we ordered two! Despite the mixed reviews, we decided to try Plate. Given the need for reservations and prices, we were expecting elevated dining. The restaurant is small with maybe a dozen tables and about equal amount of bar space. Everyone was dressed very casually favoring plaid shirts and blue jeans. The menu is limited. The fried oysters tasted like a hush puppies and none of us could see or taste an oyster. The sushi tuna salad - who cut this tuna? I'm quite sure a 5 year old with a dull knife could do a better job (see photo). The pasta tasted homemade and was served topped with large shaved pieces of parmesan - artsy but I would have preferred parmesan be freshly grated at the table. I enjoyed the pasta but my friend did not like it at all. The strip steak was tasty and cooked perfectly - as far as steaks go, it was good but definitely not one of those truly great steaks. The arepas just sat there on the plate looking completely out of place - it seemed like they were added to be able to claim it was fusion. We were really looking forward to the pan fried potatoes but they were mushy - nothing crispy about them. With only 4 stalks, grilled broccolini was a battle to grab and I lost but I was told they were amazing. We were very pleased that we were able to get ample water and drinks. Overall the service was good and attentive but not very friendly. But none of that matters if it's so noisy that you can't hear each other! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant! We went for dinner, one of the last nice weather weekends for the year, and they let us sit outside (with our dog). Only two tables outside, on both sides of the entrance, give you plenty of space and privacy. For dinner we ordered the fried zucchini, fettuccine (shiitake mushrooms, prosciutto, asparagus, white wine, and cream fraiche), grilled brined pork chop (with parsnip puree, grilled peaches, and herb butter). The zucchini dish was fantastic- the zucchini was shredded before it was fried, and it was still juicy when you bit into it. The batter was light, crunchy, and lightly salted with sea salt, and the aioli sauce paired well with it. The fettuccine was fresh, but was not the stand out dish; the pork chop is understandably their signature dish. The pork had a great sear on it, was a thick chop, and was very tender and juicy. The parsnip puree was rich and silky, and paired well the pork and peaches. The cocktails were all unique flavor combinations, and all very fresh. We tried 4 total and loved all 4. Service was great; our waiter was both helpful and friendly and made our night. read more

The staff is super friendly. The ambiance is incredible. There is so much potential. The food and cocktails though, now that's another story. The seasonal cocktail was a nightmare, you can't even really drink it because the coconut "foam" is more like a thick gel. We got the wings, which were okay. Wouldn't get them again. The burger was dry (and not to mention quite small for its price). Don't even think about ordering the ramen. The broth was flavorless and it was served with a burnt pork chop on top (which was arguably the only good thing about it). We were up in Stowe on a work night for a very special event. We thought that a 6:15 pm reservation would leave us enough time for the hour drive back. Little did we know it would take an hour and fifteen minutes to get our food and that it would be cold. There was not even one apology for the long wait from our server. We were so disappointed and I asked for a coffee to go but that was not acceptable. We were informed that they did not have to go containers but that we could get a coffee at the gas station nearby.... Eek. Also it was small, crowded, and very loud inside. read more

This is a critique on service more than food. The food was good - - very good pork chop and swordfish. Good ramen and portobello mushroom pot roast (though overpriced). Wine was fine. For reference, we eat at Michelin starred restaurants all over the world so I think we know food. The food wasn't the issue. We had an 8:00pm reservation. We had reservations for the chef counter (4 stools) which was fine except that there was a couple who were still seated there and were a party of 4. Fine. We ordered drinks at the bar and waited. After 20 minutes and absolutely no sense of movement on the part of the couple and no movement on the part of the manager, my partner mentioned to the couple that we had an 8:00 reservation just so they knew. The best approach? Maybe not but we were getting impatient. After another 10 minutes of waiting the couple got up and mentioned to us that they were going to order dessert but because of our complaining they were not. After that, the hostess became snippy and rude complaining that she would appreciate it if we would not interact with her guests as they were now likely to leave a bad review (I guess not considering that we might leave a negative review). We were finally seated and we ordered. The waitress was lovely, we ordered two bottles of wine, entrees, appetizers, and desserts and the rest of meal was fine. The waitress was lovely. Here is how I would have handled it: Party of 4 arrives on time. Seats aren't ready so suggest getting a drink at bar. So far so good. 20 minutes later something needs to be done. Either hostess apologizes and drinks on the house? Or, the hostess mentions something to the couple and perhaps moves them to a table or the bar? What shouldn't happen is a snippy hostess chastising us for communicating with her patrons. Well where should I begin. Plate is one of the very few restaurants actually located along the Main Street in Stowe. Reservations are Necessary as the dining area is small. The ambiance is upscale intimate with an open kitchen. The acoustics were poor making it difficult to have a conversation. Menu changes seasonally and offers an option irrespective of your dietary preferences. Admittedly I was very excited to dine at Plate but sadly found everything about the experience underwhelming. Service was atrocious and food was less than memorable. While the dishes sounded tasty everything we ordered was lacking flavor and/or not properly cooked. Our table ordered the soufflé, trout dip, and corn fritters with the trout being the highlight of the three. The sauces that were paired with the other two apps did not wed well and the corn fritters were oddly gummy in textured. For our mains we ordered the cod, fettuccine, mussels, pate, and pork. Cod was cooked well yet left me unsatisfied. Mussels were average and pork was undercooked. I would not recommend plate as the quality of food does not justify the cost. read more

We sat down at the table at 6:25 and food came to the table at 7:05. I had the veggie burger. Very tasty and the portion was huge. It wasn't a black bean burger like most restaurants throw together. This burger tasted intentional. Lots of flavor and texture. One of the best veggie burgers I've had and I've had a lot. The hubs had a beef hamburger that was so flavorful and fresh. We asked where they got their beef and the server told us it was from a local farmer and they grind it in house. I had a maple dark beer and the hubs had a glass of wine. Our bill was $70, $85 with tip. Worth it for the quality of the food and the good service. For a small town, Stowe had a lot of high quality restaurants. The only issue we found is they all fill up with reservations so if you're heading to Stowe and plan on eating dinner, make your reservation prior to coming. read more

The ambiance was amazing during our dinner tonight! The place was all booked up, but the patrons and staff found a space for us to cozy up to the bar. Another patron (a local) gave us so many good recommendations and told us engaging stories while we waited. Brian, the handsome bartender, made a cocktail for me that can only be described as laying on a picnic blanket amidst an apple orchard on a perfect fall day with the sunlight streaming across your face. Perfection. As if that was not enough, the herb soufflé was buttery and delectable, and the banana pudding in a jar was decadent and perfectly executed. Our server was all business, which I didn't mind for a busy place. Bottom line if you're looking for pricey food in a good spot with a casual vibe this is a decent choice. My family had a great dinner and great service at Plate. Between us we had the mussels, fried oysters, and two salad for starters, then the shrimp fettuccine and steak for entrees. Everything was fresh and well seasoned. Our requests for additions and slight modifications were handled with no issue and the one item I didn't move was taken off our bill, no questions asked. After a long drive from New Jersey, I had promised my wife a unique dinner experience in the village and Plate delivered an unforgettable evening -- only partially due to the food. We were seated at the bar and wound up having a lengthy conversation with local legend Tim the Wanderer, who provided a number of excellent recommendations for cocktails and restaurants to try over the remainder of our stay in Stowe in exchange for a round of drinks. Chef Aaron Martin has kept the menu deliberately simple, with a small number of California-inspired appetizers, salads, and entrees, made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, but the kitchen is happy to accommodate diners' food allergies upon request. I opted for the Asian-inspired Brined Pork Chop ($39), served with fried rice and bok choy in a sweet soy reduction, which was cooked perfectly medium and very tasty. My dining companion decided to order two appetizers and skip the entree -- Spicy Tuna Tartare ($17), served with grilled avocado and a quail egg yolk, and Baby Arugula Salad ($14), served with edamame, asparagus, and pistachios -- both of which were very fresh and very tasty. The fritter was delicious with its saltiness paired with crispy crunch. The grilled ribeye was good but not my favorite item. I think the plate used could have been bigger or a different shape plate as the steak barely fit in the plate. I had to turn my rectangular plate to cut my steak properly. The booking was done via a call. I left a voice message and they called me back to confirm. We had a 8-15pm reservation. We arrived right on time. We were seated promptly. We ordered drinks and the smoked trout dip. The drinks arrived in 5 min and the appetizer about 50 min later. And after the appetizer was cleared out, they took 30 more minutes for the main course. The dessert was very very underwhelming and the waitress looked like she was not expecting us to order dessert. My two cents: They need serious training in service. Service is excellent and the food is the New England version of the farm-to-table trend with a bit of hipster vibe. The food was amazing but the restaurant was extremely loud and the service was so so. I had the pork chop that was the best I've ever had.

Super disappointing dining experience. We had an early reservation so it wasn't busy, but it took around 30 minutes to get our drinks. We could see the server in the back hanging out and having a great time with the kitchen staff the entire time. Plates were chipped, mismatched, and dirty. The tuna tartare was literally just some cubed pieces of tuna sprinkled over a half an avocado with the shell still on, rolling around on a big plate. Because of the slow service we didn't order more and left still feeling hungry. Overall just a really lacking experience and I expected a lot more from this place. read more

Plate is a cute contemporary American spot on Stowe's main drag. I came here a couple months ago with my boyfriend on our fall foliage trip and reserved a week or two out for prime Saturday night seating. Starters are in the mid-teens and lean on seafood, with an effect that feels a little small town wine bar-- think tuna tartare, steamed mussels, and calamari. However, there are some unexpected dishes, like braised and fried leeks, or intriguing touches, like vanilla vinaigrette and lemon cashew aioli, that keep this updated. Case in point: our bone marrow arrived dripping with blueberry compote and ringed with creme fraiche, which made for constructing perfect meat-butter and jam toasts. The mains are more classic and pricier, with scallops and half chickens sharing space with burgers, both veggie and non. I went with the smoked burger ($15) which was sloppy, juicy and satisfying. My companion's steak ($30ish) was cooked as desired and was quite good. You pick your own sides-- nothing particularly inspired but reliably executed. They have an in-house cocktail list with updates on Moscow Mules and the like. The spicy tequila or mezcal drink was way too spicy, to the point I had to swap my boyfriend (thanks bae). His Malbec was well-priced and delicious. Prices are New York-style, making for a pricey date night-- a shared appetizer, drink, and main will set you back about $60 a person after tax and tip. Portions are big and pours are generous, though. Service was good. Vegetarians have many options and nut allergies were easily accommodated. Overall, atmosphere is nice. The open kitchen and low lighting keep it feeling cozy in winter, plates are thoughtfully kitschy, and bathrooms are clean. There are a handful of "live laugh love"-style wall decorations that prevent it from feeling more upscale. Only complaint is that we were seated by the door and it was pretty chilly out. If you're looking for a nice meal out in Stowe, this is a good choice, though if you're from a major dining city there won't be too many surprises on the menu for you. read more
